Abstract:The hydro-morphodynamic processes in the vicinity of a sediment mining pit in a channel are investigated through numerical and experimental modeling. The numerical model was developed using Flow-3D CFD software for the computation of flow and morphological characteristics around the sediment mining pit. The influence of sediment mining on river morphology and bedload budget was also quantified through numerical and experimental approaches. The bedload transport downstream of the pit was significant due to the depositing of the incoming sediment in the pit and the flow of relatively clear downstream, which caused significant erosion. The nested mesh was considered the most suitable for high-precision simulation of the hydro-morphodynamic characteristics near the pit. The maximum temporal sediment mining pit depth of deposition reached up to 78% and 53% of the initial pit depth within 25% of the computational time in the numerical simulation and experimental observation, respectively. The experimental findings reveal that the highest rate of deposition occurs in the initial stage of the experiment, then diminishes as a result of upstream nick detachment, and then steadily increases until equilibrium conditions prevail. The flow 3D simulation was found to produce the hydro-morphodynamic characteristics in the vicinity of the sediment mining pit with satisfactory agreements.
