Abstract:Seawater and sea sand are widely used in marine concrete to overcome the shortage of freshwater and river sand. However, the effect of the various salts contained in seawater and sea sand on the performance of anti-washout underwater concrete (AWC) is unclear. In this study, the influence of seawater and sea sand, as well as the aggressive ions in seawater, on the anti-washout ability and mechanical performance of AWC mortar is studied systematically, and its microscopic properties are revealed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compressive strength of AWC mortar molded in seawater was significantly lower than that in freshwater even though the indicators of anti-washout ability (turbidity, pH, and suspension content) of AWC mortar molded in seawater were lower than that in freshwater. This indicates that the anti-washout ability indicators and current test methods are not applicable for AWC in seawater. Both the decrease in compressive strength and the misleading indicators of anti-washout ability are caused by the chemical reaction of Mg2+ in seawater and OH- in cement to form Mg(OH)2 film absorbed by anti-washout admixture (AWA). This study lays the foundation for promoting the application of seawater and sea sand AWC in marine engineering.
