Abstract:We have succeeded in constructing a metalorganic framework (MOF), [Cu(bpdc)(H2O)2]n (H2bpdc=2,2'-bipyridyl-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid, 1), and two poly-POMMOFs (POM=polyoxometalate), {H[Cu(Hbpdc)(H2O)2]2[PM12O40]center dot n-H2O}n (M=Mo for 2, W for 3), by the controllable self-assembly of H2bpdc, Keggin-anions, and Cu2+ ions based on electrostatic and coordination interactions. Notably, these three compounds all crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n, and the Hbpdc- and bpdc2- ions have the same coordination mode. Interestingly, in compounds 2 and 3, Hbpdc- and the Keggin-anion are covalently linked to the transition metal copper at the same time as polydentate organic ligand and as polydentate inorganic ligand, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 represent new and rare examples of introducing the metal N-heterocyclic multi-carboxylic acid frameworks into POMs, thereby, opening a pathway for the design and the synthesis of multifunctional hybrid materials based on two building units. The Keggin-anions being immobilized as part of the metal N-heterocyclic multi-carboxylic acid frameworks not only enhance the thermal stability of compounds 2 and 3, but also introduce functionality inside their structures, thereby, realizing four approaches in the 1D hydrophilic channel used to engender proton conductivity in MOFs for the first time. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit good proton conductivity (10-4 to ca. 10-3 Scm-1) at 100 degrees C in the relative humidity range 35 to about 98%.

Abstract:Proton conduction controlled by light is important for advanced applications in sensors and information processing devices. We herein report a metal-organic framework (MOF) thin film by introducing indocyanine green dye into HSB-W5 (HSB = hydrogenated Schiff base) matrix (ICG@HSB-W5) to construct a series of basic logic gates (NOT, NAND, and NOR) on account of its good photothermal conversion ability and photo-controlled proton conductivity. The proton conductivity of ICG@HSB-W5 thin film is 25 times higher than that of the pristine HSB-W5 thin film and responses efficiently to lasers. In addition, the change of proton conductivity is very large with an ON/OFF ratio above 1000 and enough to be distinguished to build logic gates. In this logic gate system, 808- and 405-nm lasers are used as inputs and the proton conductivity is used as output signal with different thresholds. The electrical output signal is convenient and available to be received and detected. It offers a new route for the design of molecular logic gates based on MOF and facilitates the construction of proton-based logic gate or more complicated logic devices.

Abstract:Mimicking biological proton pumps to achieve stimuli-responsive protonic solids has long been of great interest for their diverse applications in fuel cells, chemical sensors, and bio-electronic devices. Now, dynamic light-responsive metal-organic framework hybrid membranes can be obtained by in situ encapsulation of photoactive molecules (sulfonated spiropyran, SSP), as the molecular valve, into the cavities of the host ZIF-8. The configuration of SSP can be changed and switched reversibly in response to light, generating different mobile acidic protons and thus high on/off photoswitchable proton conductivity in the hybrid membranes and device. This device exhibits a high proton conductivity, fast response time, and extremely large on/off ratio upon visible-light irradiation. This approach might provide a platform for creating emerging smart protonic solids with potential applications in the remote-controllable chemical sensors or proton-conducting field-effect transistors.

Abstract:A highly stable and porous MOF [Zr2(H4TPPP)(OH/F)2]·xH2O (1) containing a metal-free porphyrin-phosphonate ligand is reported. It shows high proton conductivity of 1.2 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 25 °C and 95% RH, a photothermal effect over a wide spectral range from UV-vis to NIR, and photo-enhanced and switchable proton conductivity.

Abstract:Attracted by the excellent structural stability and structural diversity of the metal–organic frameworks based on main group metals, we review the proton conductive properties of such MOFs herein, and hope to provide comprehensive and accurate guidance for related research. The properties of these MOFs are classified and reviewed according to the types of main group metal elements (s-block and p-block). We mainly focus on the following aspects: preparation strategy and synthesis techniques, influence of organic ligands on the final structures, structural stability including thermal, water and chemical stability, the proton conductivity under humidity or anhydrous conditions, the proton conducting mechanisms, and the structure–property relationship. In the end, the highlights and deficiencies of the previous research and the future challenges and trend of the research will be highlighted.

Abstract:Nowadays, the synthesis of crystalline solid materials with high proton conductivity, and excellent stability has become an important research topic. Bearing this in mind, we select a multifunctional organic ligand, 4-(2,4,6-tricarboxyphenyl)-2,2′,6,2″-terpyridine (H3tcp) that holds three carboxylate and three pyridine units to solvothermal prepare two one-dimensional MOFs, {[Cu(H1.5tcp)Cl0.5(H2O)0.5]·0.2H2O}n (1) and {[Cu(H2tcp) (H2O)]·1/2SO4·2H2O}n (2). Note that both the two MOFs contain a large amount of free carboxylate units and complicated H-bonded systems benefiting the proton transmission. AC impedance analyses demonstrated that their highest H2O-assisted proton conductivities (σ) could be 4.45 × 10−4 and 4.23 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 90 °C and 98% RH, respectively. Apparently, the high σ values are due to the efficient proton hopping across the H-bonding network built by the adsorbed H2O molecules and chemical composition such as, free –COOH and crystalline solvent units inside the frameworks. Furthermore, the lower E a values of 1 (0.22 eV) and 2 (0.13 eV) under 98% RH confirm that the protons can effectively hop along the H-bonded networks. This research offers a new inspiration for the preparation of high proton conducting MOFs with free carboxylic groups.

Abstract:Since the easy-to-design and customization of structures, guest accessibility of cavities, and functional tunability, MOFs have evolved into a burgeoning type of proton conductors. The sulfonic acid groups in MOFs can not only be used as proton sources but also can be involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds within the frameworks, which is extremely conducive to the efficient transfer of protons. In this review, recent advances of proton conductive sulfonate-based MOFs are provided covering sulfonic acid coordinated MOFs, MOFs encapsulated sulfate groups and the composite membrane contained these MOFs and so on. In-depth discussion of the relationship of structures and proton conducting properties on such MOFs is presented. Perspectives on the opportunities and challenges are proposed and highlighted.

Abstract:Applying different strategies, nanocomposite membranes formation from functionalized polymer(s) and compatible nanofillers is the most renowned way to make the membrane proton conductive without compromising their mechanical strength. Among different types of nanofillers, incorporating photothermal-responsive metal organic frameworks (MOFs) into the ion exchange polymer is the prominent strategy and has achieved advanced attention in smart protonic solids with versatile potential applications. In this work, ultrathin, highly ordered porous photothermal-responsive copper tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) nanosheets are incorporated into sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) membranes as novel nanofillers. High loading and well dispersed Cu-TCPP nanosheets incorporated nanocomposite membranes are achieved and demonstrate photo-switchable protonic conductivity due to photothermal response of MOFs nanosheets to visible light. The nanocomposite membrane with highest MOFs content shows a high proton conductivity of 1.42 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 95 degrees C at 95% RH. The altered photo-switch proton conductivity of nanocomposite membranes is attributed to the formation and breakage of H-bonding networks with water molecules in the channels of proton transport pathways by the local photothermal heated Cu-TCPP nanosheets. Furthermore, after incorporation of the Cu-TCPP nanosheets into SPS, not only the thermal stability is increased but also almost zero swelling is achieved in water, which reflects the nice durability of nanocomposite membranes. This photo-switchable proton conductivity of polymer proton conducting nanocomposite membranes with nice thermal stability and negligible swelling serves as a new gate for photo-switching proton conductive membranes, photosensors, photoswitches etc.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remain at the forefront of porous materials research due to their sensitive response to various stimuli. Thereinto, the excitation-wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) emission in MOFs has attracted great attention for the fast and noninvasive manipulation features, yet still suffers from the fixed energy-level structures with retained emission modulation, limiting applications in high-level anti-counterfeiting. Herein, we propose a strategy to achieve the switching of Ex-De emission behavior in mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (ML-MOFs) based on the proton-controlled energy transfer (ET) process. The designed ML-MOFs exhibit the competition between the ET emission and the intrinsic ligand emission, which permits the modulation on relative intensities of these two emissions by adjusting the excitation wavelength, leading to the Ex-De emission behavior. The introduction of amino groups on the acceptor ligand can affect the luminescence efficiency of the acceptor via the protonation/deprotonation effect, which reversibly manipulates the ET process. On this basis, the proton-switched Ex-De emission behavior in ML-MOFs was achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate the high-level anti-counterfeiting applications based on ML-MOFs via dynamic control of Ex-De emission behavior. The results will provide guidance for the design of novel Ex-De emission devices with smart responsiveness.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks and supramolecular metal–organic frameworks (SMOFs) exhibit great potential for a broad range of applications taking advantage of the high surface area and pore sizes and tunable chemistry. In particular, metalloporphyrin-based MOFs and SMOFs are becoming of great importance in many fields due to the bioessential functions of these macrocycles that are being mimicked. On the other hand, during the last years, proton-conducting materials have aroused much interest, and those presenting high conductivity values are potential candidates to play a key role in some solid-state electrochemical devices such as batteries and fuel cells. In this way, using metalloporphyrins as building units we have obtained a new crystalline material with formula [H(bipy)]2[(MnTPPS)(H2O)2]·2bipy·14H2O, where bipy is 4,4′-bipyidine and TPPS4− is the meso-tetra(4-sulfonatephenyl) porphyrin. The crystal structure shows a zig-zag water chain along the [100] direction located between the sulfonate groups of the porphyrin. Taking into account those structural features, the compound was tested for proton conduction by complex electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The as-obtained conductivity is 1 × 10−2 S·cm−1 at 40 °C and 98% relative humidity, which is a remarkably high value.

Abstract:Using multifunctional organic ligands with multiple acidic groups (carboxylate and sulfonate groups) to synthesize metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing effective H-bond networks is a promising strategy to obtain highly proton conductive materials. In this work, a highly stable two-dimensional MOF, [CuII5CuI2(μ3-OH)4(H2O)6(L)2(H2L)2]·3H2O (denoted as YCu161; H3L = 6-sulfonaphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid) containing mixed-valence [CuII5CuI2(μ3-OH)4]8+ subunits, was successfully prepared. It exhibited excellent stability and temperature- and humidity-dependent proton conduction properties. Its optimal proton conductivity reached 1.84 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity. On the basis of a crystal structure analysis, water vapor adsorption test results, and activation energy calculations, we deduced the proton conduction pathway and mechanism. Apparently, uncoordinated sulfonic and carboxyl groups and a network of abundant H-bonds inside the framework were responsible for the efficient proton transfer. Abstract:Taking advantage of a basic ligand (BPCH=2,6-bis(4-pyridyl methylidene)cyclohexanone) and three acid ligands (H2TP=terephthalic acid, H2IP=isophthalic acid, H(3)TMA=1, 3, 5 - benzenetricarboxylic acid), seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-7 have been achieved by using this acid-base mixed-ligand synthetic strategy. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Diverse 3D structural characters of MOFs 1-3 or 2D structural characters of MOFs 4-7 have been observed. The fluorescence properties of these complexes have been explored, indicating that they had selectivity towards Fe3+ ions. Several complexes had shown certain performance for adsorbing dye molecules.

Abstract:Four new metal-organic frameworks [Zn3(HL)2(btc)2(H2O)2]·H2O (1), [Mn(H2L)(btc)(H2O)] (2), [Zn2(L)(HL)(SIP)(H2O)]·4H2O (3) and [Cd(H2L)(SIP)(H2O)]·3H2O (4) were obtained by reactions of the different metal(II) salts with mixed ligands including 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc), sodium 5-sulfoisophthalate (NaH2SIP) and 1-(4-(1H-imidazole-5-yl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (HL), respectively. All compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The study shows that the natures of organic ligands as well as metal ions play key roles in modulating the resulting frameworks of 1–4. The complex 1 is a (3, 4, 4)-connected three-dimensional (3D) net with the point (Schläfli) symbol of (42·63·8)4(64·8·10), while 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) layer structure referred as fes net with a Point (Schläfli) symbol of (4·82). Complex 3 has 2-nodal (3, 3, 4)-connected rare tfc net with a Point (Schlafli) symbol of (83)2(85·10), while 4 is a supramolecular polymer constructed from infinite one-dimensional (1D) chains by the interaction of rich hydrogen bonds and π - π stacking. The luminescent properties have been investigated for the compounds 1, 3, and 4 containing metal d10 Zn(II) and Cd(II) atoms.

Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have established themselves as a promising proton-conducting material among all types of porous coordination polymers and covalent organic frameworks. The structural diversity of LMOFs and high oxophilicity with a high coordination number of lanthanide ions make the LMOFs a standout material for proton conductivity. Ample research effort has been devoted for the last few years to designing and developing proton-conducting lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (PCLMOFs). Some of the PCLMOFs have shown great potential with proton conductivity comparable to commercially used perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) polymers for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) in fuel cells. Now it is also apparent that PCLMOFs are becoming a potential platform to explore other functional properties (e.g. fluorescence sensing, gas adsorption, molecular magnetism, impedance sensing, ferroelectricity, and nonlinear optics). The intrinsic structural features of PCLMOFs inevitably bring the opportunity to introduce the multifunctional character of such materials. So, any scope for additional functional property must be investigated for this class of material. In this article, we have concisely discussed the design strategy and structural features of some multifunctional PCLMOFs. The multifunctional properties of some excellent PCLMOFs are reviewed. In addition, the prospect of PCLMOFs is briefly discussed in the context of real-world material applications.

Abstract:Through a stepwise functionalization strategy, LiCl@UiO-66-F 2 (SO 3 H) 2 manifests a superprotonic conductivity of 2.86 S cm–1 (at 90% RH and 90 °C), a record breaker so far. Supported by joint experimental–theoretical studies, the ultrahigh conductivity originates from conduction by protons rather than ions and is rationalized to result from the enhanced acidity of −SO3H by introduction of electronegative −F followed by the formation of double charged layers composed of Li+ and −SO3 – layers after encapsulation of LiCl. Importantly, the effect of charged layers has been verified, and charged-layer-mediated proton conduction is unprecedentedly proposed to fill in the missing pieces in existing proton conduction mechanisms, giving insight into the rational design of superprotonic conducting framework materials potentially applied as proton exchange membranes in fuel cells.

Abstract:In this work, we design and synthesize one organic molecule solid-state material and three metal–organic frameworks, (H3tcpb·H2O) n (H3tcpb-H2O), [Mn2(Htcpb)(μ3-SO4)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (1), {[Co(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·0.5CH3CN·H2O} n (2), and {[Ni(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·H2O} n (3), based on 2-(6-phenyl-[2,3′-bipyridin]-4-yl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3tcpb) to study their proton transport pathways and conducting mechanisms. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the finest proton conductivity (σ) value of 1 modified by sulfate anions can reach as high as 5.83 × 10–3 S·cm–1 being approximately three times greater than that of H3tcpb-H2O (1.90 × 10–3 S·cm–1). Meanwhile, the finest σ values of two isomeric 2 and 3 being 3.14 × 10–3 and 3.08 × 10–3 S·cm–1, respectively, are also higher than the value of H3tcpb-H2O. This report demonstrates that the finest σ values of H3tcpb-H2O and 1–3 are all in line with the demand for high-protonic conductors, which sparks us to bring about better proton-conducting crystalline materials.

Abstract:Cooperative binding plays essential roles in many biochemical processes and has important implications for the development of sensory materials. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be designed to possess multiple binding sites on pore surfaces, but binding cooperativity within the confined space is rarely recognized. Here, we present a systematic study on cooperative protonation in MOFs in order to gain structural insights into the phenomenon. Three microporous Zr(IV) MOFs were studied for comparison, two furnished with sterically hindered but proton-accessible sites (Zr-PTB and Zr-PPTB) and one free of pyridyl sites (Zr-BTB, isostructural to Zr-PTB). Zr-PTB and Zr-PPTB show two opposite and simultaneous fluorescence transitions in narrow pH changes, which has the appeal for ultrasensitive pH probing. The dual-emission response is ascribable to pyridyl protonation, which turns off the (n, π*) emission and, meanwhile, turns on the (π, π*) emission. The abrupt fluorescence transitions arise from positive cooperativity of multisite protonation. Zr-PPTB shows stronger cooperativity (Hill coefficient h = 1.6) than Zr-PTB (h = 1.2). Structural inspection suggests that the arrangement of the pyridyl sites in Zr-PPTB is conducive to the interplay between pyridyl sites. Moreover, we demonstrate abrupt enhancement (up to 500 times) in proton conduction for Zr-PTB below the pH of cooperative protonation, with a maximum conductivity of 1.2 × 10–2 S cm–1 at 347 K and 98% RH. Zr-PPTB also shows abrupt conductivity enhancement upon cooperative protonation, but the enhancement is smaller. We ascribe the difference to the biased allocation of pyridyl sites between different channels of Zr-PPTB.
