Abstract:Since the easy-to-design and customization of structures, guest accessibility of cavities, and functional tunability, MOFs have evolved into a burgeoning type of proton conductors. The sulfonic acid groups in MOFs can not only be used as proton sources but also can be involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds within the frameworks, which is extremely conducive to the efficient transfer of protons. In this review, recent advances of proton conductive sulfonate-based MOFs are provided covering sulfonic acid coordinated MOFs, MOFs encapsulated sulfate groups and the composite membrane contained these MOFs and so on. In-depth discussion of the relationship of structures and proton conducting properties on such MOFs is presented. Perspectives on the opportunities and challenges are proposed and highlighted.

The proton conduction behavior of two 1D open-framework metal phosphates with similar crystal structures and different hydrogen bond networks

Abstract:Two open-framework zinc phosphates [C 3 N 2 H 12 ][Zn(HPO 4 ) 2 ] ( 1 ) and [C 6 N 4 H 22 ] 0.5 [Zn(HPO 4 ) 2 ] ( 2 ) were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Both compounds have a similar crystal structure and macroscopic morphology. However, the difference in equilibrium cations, in which the propylene diamine is for 1 and the triethylenetetramine is for 2 , results in a significant distinction in the dense hydrogen grid. The diprotonated propylene diamine molecule in 1 is more favorable for forming a hydrogen-bond network in three dimensions than in 2 , in which the twisted triethylenetetramine forms a hydrogen bond grid with the inorganic framework only in two dimensions owing to its large steric effect. This distinction further leads to a disparity in the proton conductivity of both compounds. The proton conductivity of 1 can reach 1.00 × 10 −3 S cm −1 under ambient conditions (303 K and 75% RH) and then increase to 1.11 × 10 −2 S cm −1 at 333 K and 99% RH, which is the highest value among the open-framework metal phosphate proton conductors operated in the same conduction. In contrast, the proton conductivity of 2 is four orders of magnitude smaller than 1 at 303 K and 75% RH and two orders smaller than 1 at 333 K and 99% RH.

Abstract:Attracted by the excellent structural stability and structural diversity of the metal–organic frameworks based on main group metals, we review the proton conductive properties of such MOFs herein, and hope to provide comprehensive and accurate guidance for related research. The properties of these MOFs are classified and reviewed according to the types of main group metal elements (s-block and p-block). We mainly focus on the following aspects: preparation strategy and synthesis techniques, influence of organic ligands on the final structures, structural stability including thermal, water and chemical stability, the proton conductivity under humidity or anhydrous conditions, the proton conducting mechanisms, and the structure–property relationship. In the end, the highlights and deficiencies of the previous research and the future challenges and trend of the research will be highlighted.

Water-Mediated Proton Conduction in Metal–Organic Frameworks with High Water Stability Constructed by a Terpyridine Tricarboxylate Ligand

Abstract:In this work, we design and synthesize one organic molecule solid-state material and three metal–organic frameworks, (H3tcpb·H2O) n (H3tcpb-H2O), [Mn2(Htcpb)(μ3-SO4)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (1), {[Co(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·0.5CH3CN·H2O} n (2), and {[Ni(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·H2O} n (3), based on 2-(6-phenyl-[2,3′-bipyridin]-4-yl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3tcpb) to study their proton transport pathways and conducting mechanisms. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the finest proton conductivity (σ) value of 1 modified by sulfate anions can reach as high as 5.83 × 10–3 S·cm–1 being approximately three times greater than that of H3tcpb-H2O (1.90 × 10–3 S·cm–1). Meanwhile, the finest σ values of two isomeric 2 and 3 being 3.14 × 10–3 and 3.08 × 10–3 S·cm–1, respectively, are also higher than the value of H3tcpb-H2O. This report demonstrates that the finest σ values of H3tcpb-H2O and 1–3 are all in line with the demand for high-protonic conductors, which sparks us to bring about better proton-conducting crystalline materials.

Bio‐Inspired Synthetic Hydrogen‐Bonded Organic Frameworks for Efficient Proton Conduction

Abstract:Hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a rising class of promising proton‐conducting materials. However, they always suffer from the inherent contradiction between chemical stability and proton conduction. Herein, inspired by the self‐assembly of lipid bilayer membranes, we successfully develop a series of aminomethylphosphonic acid‐derived single‐component HOFs with different substituents attached to the phosphonate oxygen group. They remain highly stable in strong acid or alkaline water solutions for one month owing to the presence of charge‐assisted hydrogen bonds. Interestingly, in the absence of external proton carriers, the methyl‐substituted phosphonate‐based HOF exhibits a very high proton conductivity of up to 4.2×10−3 S cm−1 under 80°C and 98% relative humidity (RH). This value is not only comparable to that of HOFs consisting of mixed ligands but also is the highest reported in single‐component HOFs. A combination of single‐crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculations (DFT) reveals that the high conductivity is attributed to the strengthened H‐bonding interactions between positively charged amines and negatively charged phosphonate groups in the channel of bio‐inspired HOFs. This finding demonstrates that the well‐defined molecular structure of proton conductors is of great importance in the precise understanding of the relationship between structure and property. Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks(HOFs) have been well recognizedfor constructing solid-state proton-conducting materials due to theirinherent well-defined H-bonded networks; however, the design and synthesisof stable HOFs showing ultrahigh superprotonic conductivity is stillchallenging. Herein, we reported a facile and effective syntheticstrategy to build high proton-conducting metalo hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganicframeworks (MHOFs) through charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons.The supramolecular self-assembly of simple metal salts and tetra-carboxylicacids gives rise to two hydrogen-bonded frameworks, [M(H2O)(6)][H(2)tcba] (M = Zn2+, Ni2+; H(4)tcba = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid). X-raycrystallography and gas adsorption confirmed the nonporous natureof the HOIFs. Variable-temperature single-crystal and powder X-raydiffraction experiments reveal the thermal and water stability ofthe supramolecular structures sustained by exclusively charge-assistedhydrogen bonds. The high density of carboxylic acid groups and coordinatedwater molecules provide ample protons and hydrophilic environmentsfor efficient proton transport; therefore, variable-temperature and-humidity electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that MHOFsare good supramolecular proton conductors with conductivities up to1.1 x 10(-2) and 2.1 x 10(-2) S center dot cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively, at 80 degrees C under 97% RH. Our study demonstratesgreat potential of charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthonsin the design and construction of proton-conducting HOIFs. Two supramolecular proton conductorssynthesized throughcharge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons were reported to showconductivity up to 10(-2) S cm(-1) level because of exclusively charge-assisted hydrogen bonding networks.

Abstract:Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with proton-conducting behavior have attracted great attention as promising materials for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we report the mechanochemical gram-scale synthesis of three new mixed-ligand phosphonate-based MOFs, {Co(H2PhDPA)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)·2H2O}n (BAM-1), {Fe(H2PhDPA)(4,4'-bipy) (H2O)·2H2O}n (BAM-2), and {Cu(H2PhDPA)(dpe)2(H2O)2·2H2O}n (BAM-3) [where H2PhDPA = phenylene diphosphonate, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, and dpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that BAM-1 and BAM-2 are isostructural and possess a three-dimensional (3D) network structure comprising one-dimensional (1D) channels filled with guest water molecules. Instead, BAM-3 displays a 1D network structure extended into a 3D supramolecular structure through hydrogen-bonding and π-π interactions. In all three structures, guest water molecules are interconnected with the uncoordinated acidic hydroxyl groups of the phosphonate moieties and coordinated water molecules by means of extended hydrogen-bonding interactions. BAM-1 and BAM-2 showed a gradual increase in proton conductivity with increasing temperature and reached 4.9 × 10-5 and 4.4 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH). The highest proton conductivity recorded for BAM-3 was 1.4 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 50 °C and 98% RH. Upon further heating, BAM-3 undergoes dehydration followed by a phase transition to another crystalline form which largely affects its performance. All compounds exhibited a proton hopping (Grotthuss model) mechanism, as suggested by their low activation energy.

Abstract:Understanding the molecular mechanism of proton conduction is crucial for the design of new materials with improved conductivity. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) has been used to probe the mechanism of proton diffusion within a new phosphonate-based metal–organic framework (MOF) material, MFM-500(Ni). QENS suggests that the proton conductivity (4.5 × 10–4 S/cm at 98% relative humidity and 25 °C) of MFM-500(Ni) is mediated by intrinsic “free diffusion inside a sphere”, representing the first example of such a mechanism observed in MOFs.

Abstract:Herein, the K+ ions were doped into the inorganic layer of two 2D layer metal phosphates (C2H10N2)[Mn2(PO4)2]2H2O (1) and (C2H10N2)[Mn2(HPO4)3](H2O) (2), respectively, via ion exchange method. The resultant compounds maintained the original structures of 1 and 2, but significantly improved their proton conductivity, for example, the proton conductivity of 1 increased from 1.14 × 10−5 Scm−1 to 3.39 × 10−2 Scm−1 at 99% RH and 293 K after doped 0.55 K+ ions; the proton conductivity of 2 is 0.70 × 10−2 Scm−1 at 99% RH and 293 K after doped 0.32 K+ ions, and is 4.3 times that of the orginal sample. Such a substantial increase in proton conductivity could be attributable to that the K+ ions in aqueous solutions create stronger electrostatic fields to accommodate water, and thus make a more dense and extensive hydrogen-bonding network to enhance the transport of protons.

Abstract:Owing to their inherent pore structure, porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) can undergo postsynthetic modification, such as loading extra-framework proton carriers. However, strategies for improving the proton conductivity for nonporous MOFs are largely lacking, although increasing numbers of nonporous MOFs exhibit promising proton conductivities. Often, high humidity is required for nonporous MOFs to achieve high conductivities, but to date no clear mechanisms have been experimentally identified. Here we describe the new materials MFM-550(M), [M(HL1)], (H4L1 = biphenyl-4,4'-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), MFM-550(Ba), [Ba(H2L1)], and MFM-555(M), [M(HL2)], (H4L2 = benzene-1,4-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), and report enhanced proton conductivities in these nonporous materials by (i) replacing the metal ion to one with a lower oxidation state, (ii) reducing the length of the organic ligand, and (iii) introducing additional acidic protons on the MOF surface. Increased framework proton density in these materials can lead to an enhancement in proton conductivity of up to 4 orders of magnitude. Additionally, we report a comprehensive investigation using in situ H-2 NMR and neutron spectroscopy, coupled with molecular dynamic modeling, to elucidate the role of humidity in assembling interconnected networks for proton hopping. This study constructs a relationship between framework proton density and the corresponding proton conductivity in nonporous MOFs, and directly explains the role of both surface protons and external water in assembling the proton conduction pathways.

Abstract:Although proton-conductive metal phosphonates with well-defined structure offer a favorable platform for exploring their structure-property relationship, investigating of the synergic effect of phosphonate groups and functional moieties on proton conduction is rare. In this work, we have synthesized two new copper phosphonates, [Cu(4-cppH)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)3] (FJU-80) and [Cu(4-cppH)(4,4'-bipy)]·H2O·DMF (FJU-81), by the method of solvent-assisted modification, giving a 1D metal coordination polymer and a 3D metal open framework, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that FJU-80 is full of hydrogen-bonding sites contributed from the improved synergic effect of phosphonate groups, carboxylate groups, and coordinated water molecules, thereby facilitating continuous hydrogen-bonding networks, whereas FJU-81 only has discrete hydrogen-bonding fragments. Powder X-ray diffraction and impedance analyses confirm that FJU-80 possesses higher water stability as well as improved proton conductivity, indicating that solvent-assisted modification is effective in increasing the hydrogen-bonding sites from phosphonate groups and functional moieties and then realizing facile proton transfer.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a type of proton conductive materials have gained much achievements. Here, an acylamide-functionalized 3D metal-organic framework [Ni3(TPBTC)2(stp)2(H2O)4]·2DMA·32H2O has been successfully constructed via combining Ni(NO3)2, TPBTC (TPBTC = Benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylic acid tris-pyridin-4-ylamide) and 2-H2stp (2-H2stp = 2-sulfoterephthalic acid monosodium salt) under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that there are uncoordinated guest DMA molecules in the pores of compound. On removal of guest DMA molecules, the proton conductivity of the compound increased to 2.25 × 10-3 S cm−1 under 80°C and 98% RH which is about 110 times of the original material. It is hoped that this work can provide the essential insight for designing and obtaining more excellent crystalline-state proton conducting materials by considering the influences of guest molecules on proton-conduction properties of porous materials.

Abstract:Through a stepwise functionalization strategy, LiCl@UiO-66-F 2 (SO 3 H) 2 manifests a superprotonic conductivity of 2.86 S cm–1 (at 90% RH and 90 °C), a record breaker so far. Supported by joint experimental–theoretical studies, the ultrahigh conductivity originates from conduction by protons rather than ions and is rationalized to result from the enhanced acidity of −SO3H by introduction of electronegative −F followed by the formation of double charged layers composed of Li+ and −SO3 – layers after encapsulation of LiCl. Importantly, the effect of charged layers has been verified, and charged-layer-mediated proton conduction is unprecedentedly proposed to fill in the missing pieces in existing proton conduction mechanisms, giving insight into the rational design of superprotonic conducting framework materials potentially applied as proton exchange membranes in fuel cells.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are promising proton conductive materials because of their inherent and abundant hydrogen-bonding sites. However, most superprotonic-conductive HOFs are constructed from multiple components to enable favorable framework architectures and structural integrity. In this contribution, layered HOF-TPB-A3 with a single component is synthesized and exfoliated. The exfoliated nanoplates exhibited anisotropic superprotonic conduction, with in-plane proton conductivities reaching 1.34 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 296 K and 98% relative humidity (RH). This outperforms the previously reported single-component HOFs and is comparable with the state-of-the-art multiple-component HOFs. The high and anisotropic proton conductive properties can be attributed to the efficient proton transport along multiple open channels parallel to their basal planes. Moreover, an all-solid-state (ASS) proton rectifier device is demonstrated by combining HOF-TPB-A3 and a hydroxide ion-conducting layered double hydroxide (LDH). This work suggests that single-component HOFs with multiple open channels offer more opportunities as versatile platforms for proton conductors, making them promising candidates for conducting media in protonic devices.
Metalo Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Constructed by Coordinated Chains for Magnetic and Proton-Conductive Bifunctionality

Abstract:Metalo hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) have received growing interest in designing crystalline functional materials. However, reports on bifunctional MHOFs showing magnetic and proton-conductive properties are extremely limited and their design is challenging. Herein, we investigated the magnetic and proton-conductive properties of two sulfonated CoHOF and MnHOF, {M(H2O)2(abs)2}n (M = Co2+ and Mn2+, Habs = 4-aminoazobenzene-4'-sulfonic anion), constructed by coordination chains. The supramolecular frameworks sustained by H bonds between -SO3- and coordinated water show directional ladder-type H bonds with hydrophilic nanochannels, leading to high proton conduction with exceptionally high conductivity around 10-2 S cm-1 at 100 °C under 97% relative humidity. In particular, the maximum σ value of CoHOF, 2.11 × 10-2 S cm-1, recorded the highest value among the reported proton-conducting materials showing slow magnetic relaxation. Meanwhile, the molecular structure of organosulfonate enables the magnetic isolation of high-spin Co2+ and Mn2+ centers in the frameworks. Magnetic measurements indicated that the MHOFs show field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) properties, making these compounds rare magnetic-proton-conductive MHOFs. The work provides not only two unique MHOFs with SIM behavior and high proton conduction performance but also avenues for designing stable bifunctional MHOFs via a coordination chain approach.
