Abstract:Groundwater pollution by fluoride is one of the prime concerns of the world population due to its toxicity, which results in adverse health impacts. In this paper, we review the current scenario of the fluoride contamination of groundwater in various countries across the globe and its impact on human health. During the last decade, several newly affected regions have been reported all over the world, with more than 100 countries affected by fluoride contamination in groundwater (concentration exceeding the acceptable limit of 1.5 mg/L defined by the World Health Organization). Fluoride poisoning is mainly due to the unsupervised ingestion of products for dental and oral hygiene and over-fluoridated drinking water. It is estimated that more than 200 million people from different countries are affected by fluoride-related groundwater issues and health problems. The highest among these are from the countries in Africa (38), Asia (28), and Europe (24), followed by countries like South America (5), North America (3), and Australia (2). The source of fluoride in drinking water is primarily geogenic, together with forage, grasses and grains, tea, and anthropogenic sources. These countries affected were correlated with climatic zones and geological factors to gain insights into geospatial relations. Our analyses show that most of the fluoride pollution-prone zones are located in high-grade metamorphic terranes with granitoid or alkaline intrusions, geothermal hot springs, and volcanic regions with arid or semi-arid climatic conditions. This study also finds that children across the globe are more vulnerable than adults to fluoride contamination. The review finds that, although there are efficient fluoride removal techniques, including filters with next-generation nanomaterials, to date, there has not been a single technique developed that can claim to be a practically robust solution for fluoride removal from drinking water. Therefore, we suggest developing next-generation filters that can retain essential minerals in water and remove only harmful ones and selecting purification technologies according to need, climate, geology, and geographic location. The findings from our review would help policymakers take effective and sustainable measures for safe water supply in the affected areas. Within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), this study emphasizes the critical role of fluoride as a key indicator. It underscores the imperative of addressing elevated fluoride levels in drinking water, particularly in African and Asian countries, to achieve the overarching objective of universal and equitable access to safe, affordable, and uncontaminated drinking water for global society by the targeted year of 2030.

Nalgonda procedure is one of the well-known strategies generally utilized for defluoridation of water as a part of developing nations, for example, India, Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania. Among different techniques utilized for defluoridation of water, the adsorption procedure is broadly utilized.

Abstract:Several million people are exposed to fluoride (F-) via drinking water in the world. Current review emphasized the elevated level of fluoride concentrations in the groundwater and associated potential health risk globally with a special focus on Pakistan. Millions of people are deeply dependent on groundwater from different countries of the world encompassing with an elevated level of fluoride. The latest estimates suggest that around 200 million people, from among 25 nations the world over, are under the dreadful fate of fluorosis. India and China, the two most populous countries of the world, are the worst affected. In Pakistan, fluoride data of 29 major cities are reviewed and 34% of the cities show fluoride levels with a mean value greater than 1.5 mg/L where Lahore, Quetta and Tehsil Mailsi are having the maximum values of 23.60, 24.48, > 5.5 mg/L, respectively. In recent years, however, other countries have minimized, even eliminated its use due to health issues. High concentration of fluoride for extended time period causes adverse effects of health such as skin lesions, discoloration, cardiovascular disorders, dental fluorosis and crippling skeletal fluorosis. This review deliberates comprehensive strategy of drinking water quality in the global scenario of fluoride contamination, especially in Pakistan with prominence on major pollutants, mitigation technologies, sources of pollution and ensuing health problems. Considering these verities, health authorities urgently need to establish alternative means of water decontamination in order to prevent associated health problems.

Abstract:Due to the increase in industrialization, climate change, and urbanization, the quality of drinking water is declining day by day. Fluoride levels in drinking water have seen a remarkable increase in several places across the world in the last decade. The accumulation of fluoride in an aqueous environment is caused by both natural as well as anthropogenic sources. The main concern regarding fluoride contamination is dental and bones related issues. According to WHO guidelines, the permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L. Fluoride contamination causes a detrimental effect on the health of the people. This article highlights the distribution of fluoride in India, as well as the many routes by which it enters the human body and probable fluoride metabolism inside the body. The numerous strategies used to remediate fluoride from water, like precipitation/coagulation, ion exchange, membrane separation, electro-separation, and adsorption are elaborated. Amongst these techniques, adsorption is one of the best-optimized techniques involving sustainable materials like biochars, which are cost-effective, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly adsorbents.

Abstract:Fluoride ions are commonly found in minerals like mica, fluorapatite, muscovite, topaz, biotite, sellaite, cryolite, muscovite, and fluorspar. However, the presence of fluoride in groundwater has become a concern due to its contamination by wastewater from coal thermal power stations, aluminium smelters, electroplating-based industries, and glass and ceramic manufacturing facilities. While low fluoride consumption has some health benefits, excessive intake can lead to serious health issues such as crippling skeletal fluorosis, Alzheimer's syndrome, carcinogenic effects, infertility, and thyroid disorders. To address these chronic health impacts, there has been significant research to find out sustainable and highly efficient methods for fluoride removal. This review paper overviews various defluorination techniques, such as precipitation and coagulation, ion exchange, electrodialysis or reverse osmosis (RO), nano-filtration, adsorption, with their various advantages and drawbacks. The present review aims to provide insight knowledge of importance of fluoride, its toxicity issues and their available removal strategies and their limitations. This will help the researchers in developing cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and convenient techniques for defluorination in different matrices. The paper encourages scientists to work towards achieving reliable and eco-friendly defluorination methods for future application.

Abstract:With the constant rising demand for pure water to meet the needs of the growing population particularly in developing countries, fluoride remediation from drinking water has emerged as an increasingly important matter of public concern. In the past decade, significant efforts and advances have been made for developing efficient adsorbents for fluoride removal from water. This review summarizes recent advances (2012–2016) in defluoridation techniques and highlights the challenges and opportunities for future research in the important field of fluoride removal. The spectroscopic techniques, used to develop adsorbents/adsorption mechanism, discussed in this review are X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The defluoridation techniques have been discussed in four categories: precipitation, membrane, ion-exchange, and adsorption techniques. Then recent research on fluoride removal using various adsorbents with their spectroscopic studies are summarized and discussed with regard to their synthetic chemistry, properties, and applications. The advantages and disadvantages of defluoridation techniques and adsorbents have been presented. Finally, the future needs and perspectives of fluoride removal are addressed.

Abstract:Fluoride contamination in drinking water due to natural and anthropogenic activities has been recognized as one of the major problems worldwide imposing a serious threat to human health. Among several treatment technologies applied for fluoride removal, adsorption process has been explored widely and offers satisfactory results especially with mineral-based and/or surface modified adsorbents. In this review, an extensive list of various adsorbents from literature has been compiled and their adsorption capacities under various conditions (pH, initial fluoride concentration, temperature, contact time, adsorbent surface charge, etc.) for fluoride removal as available in the literature are presented along with highlighting and discussing the key advancement on the preparation of novel adsorbents tested so far for fluoride removal. It is evident from the literature survey that various adsorbents have shown good potential for the removal of fluoride. However, still there is a need to find out the practical utility of such developed adsorbents on a commercial scale, leading to the improvement of pollution control.

Abstract:Ground water has always been an important and most dependable source of water since prehistoric ages, but with rapid industrialization to meet the needs of growing population has stressed the ground water reservoir. Stress to ground water reservoir is just one problem; industrial waste has also introduced lots of new chemical substances in water bodies. Fluorides are one such pollutant that undermines living life forms especially human beings .There are primarily two sources of fluoride contamination in ground water. Geogenic sources and anthropogenic sources. Talking about the status of fluoride contamination it can be seen in more than 25 countries worldwide. In India itself 19 states and at least 132 districts have witnessed the problem of water contamination, Fluoride contamination is also impacting the health of people adversely. Diseases like skeletal fluorosis, non –skeletal fluorosis, and dental fluorosis are the most common health problem from fluoride contamination .Due to fluoride contamination diseases in plants like Chlorosis, Necrosis is impacting plant body. Thus, to remove fluorine contamination from water we can use bioremediation process. Bioremediation strategies can be classified mainly in two categories in – situ techniques and ex –situ techniques. Its mode of action primarily includes use of microbes in processing the fluoride contamination. This shows that bioremediation has lots of advantages like it’s a natural process, cost effective etc. But it too have some disadvantages like they are highly specific and it takes longer time etc. Considering all the merits and demerits of bioremediation, it is the most effective technological tool that holds great value for the future as scientists learn more about its capabilities and the curiosity to find more appropriate methods are still going on. Abstract:Groundwater has traditionally been recognized as a reliable, safe, and essential source of drinking water. Rapid population growth increases groundwater demand, resulting in overexploitation. The quality of groundwater is deteriorating day by day due to geogenic forces and pollutants. Fluoride is one of the biggest worries about groundwater contamination, which can have serious consequences for human health mainly as fluorosis. WHO has set a global rejection limit of 1.5 mg/l for fluoride; however, it is exceeded in many places of the world. Where no other source of safe drinking water is available, removing fluoride from drinking water is the only option for obtaining safe drinking water. This review discusses various removal options, based on a number of laboratory experiments and recognized literature. The findings show that the majority of removal methods are based on adsorption processes and suit well in bench scale conditions, but hybrid and real-world application-oriented economic strategies are still being developed. The ineffective removal of fluoride from water by a single treatment has led researchers to look for hybrid approaches. Bioremediation, a usually disregarded approach, is also offered for temporarily relieving fluoride levels due to a lack of wastewater treatment facilities that need large construction costs and phytoremediation is gaining popularity owing to its advantages.

Abstract:Contamination of groundwater with fluoride represents a significant global issue, with high concentrations posing serious public health threats. While fluoride is a critical element in water, excessive levels can be detrimental to human health and potentially life-threatening. Addressing the challenge of removing fluoride from underground water sources via nanotechnological approaches is a pressing concern in environmental science. To collate relevant information, extensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. VOS Viewer software version 1.6.20 was employed for a systematic review. This article delivers an exhaustive evaluation of various groundwater fluoride removal techniques, such as adsorption, membrane filtration, electrocoagulation, photocatalysis, and ion exchange. Among these, the application of nanoparticles emerges as a notable method. The article delves into nano-compounds, optimizing conditions for the fluoride removal process and benchmarking their efficacy against other techniques. Studies demonstrate that advanced nanotechnologies—owing to their rapid reaction times and potent oxidation capabilities—can remove fluoride effectively. The implementation of nanotechnologies in fluoride removal not only enhances water quality but also contributes to the safeguarding of human health.

Abstract:Fluorosis is one of the global problems that have persisted for a very long time now without any specific treatment and cure. Fluoride is known for its influence on the tooth structures like enamel and dentin, but little information exists on its effect on the surrounding periodontal structures and bone. With this background, we conducted multiple studies assessing etiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical criteria in subjects with and without dental fluorosis in a single group of the population residing in high fluoride water areas (1.5-3.0 ppm) of Davangere District, Karnataka, India. These preliminary studies conducted are hereby elaborately presented and discussed in this comprehensive review article along with their important conclusions.

Abstract:The polluted water sources pose a serious issue concerning the various health hazards they bring along. Due to various uncontrolled anthropogenic and industrial activities, a great number of pollutants have gained entry into the water systems. Among all the emerging contaminants, anionic species such as fluoride cause a major role in polluting the water bodies because of its high reactivity with other elements. The need for water remediation has led the research community to come up with several physicochemical and electrochemical methods to remove fluoride contamination. Among the existing methods, biosorption using bio and modified biomaterials has been extensively studied for defluoridation, as they are cheap, easily available and effectively recyclable when compared to other methods for defluoridation. Adding on, these materials are non-toxic and are safe to use compared to many other synthetic materials that are toxic and require high-cost design requirements. This review focuses on the recent developments made in the defluoridation techniques by biosorption using bio and modified biomaterials and defines the current perspectives of fluoride removal specifically using biomaterials.

Abstract:Fluorine is a highly reactive electronegative element and naturally found in a combined form with other elements. In water, it remains as fluoride. It can be present in soil and air also. Beside the natural abundance, anthropogenic activities e.g. use of pesticides, fertilizers, sewage, coal burning etc. can increase the fluoride concentration in the environment. According to the World Health Organization, Permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 ppm (mg/L). When presence of fluoride in drinking water is within the permissible limit, it exerts beneficial effects on teeth, preventing dental caries; while, chronic exposure of fluoride beyond the permissible limit causes mild to severe form of dental and skeletal fluorosis. Apart from these hard tissues, chronic fluoride exposure beyond the permissible limit causes detrimental effect on soft tissues e.g. liver, kidney, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive organ etc. Studies also indicate that fluoride induces significantly genotoxic effect both in vivo and in vitro. Although various techniques have been developed for defluoridation of water but each one has limitations. Unfortunately, till date, there is no effective strategy of fluorosis treatment. In order to develop an effective therapeutic strategy, thorough understandings on the molecular mechanism of fluoride induced toxicity should be unravelled. This review enlightens both beneficial and toxic effects of fluoride emphasizing its molecular mechanism of action.

Abstract:Abstract: Water is the most critical component of the earth's ecosystem because it is fundamental to the survival of plants and animals. However, our water supply is continuously polluting. Removing contaminants from water is a crucial part of addressing water scarcity and maintaining a healthy ecosystem for all. This review focuses on adsorption and the CNTs/AC family nano adsorbents and their contribution to the removal of fluoride and other contaminants. Many types of wastewater treatment methods have been employed, including precipitation, ion-exchange, adsorption, membrane filtration, etc. A water technology with great efficiency and low cost, without requiring costly infrastructure, is the most preferred option due to adsorption. Recently, the application of carbon family nanomaterials as adsorbents has been prevalent due to their phenomenal surface properties, simple customization, immense specific surface area, numerous variations in structural type, chemical stability, porosity, low density, ease of regeneration, and the ability to be reused. Hazardous contaminants, such as fluoride, generate major public health risks. Water contamination by heavy metals provides a significant health concern, including an increased chance of getting diseases like cancer, anaemia, carcinogenic effects, and acute effects in children. The increased presence of fluoride in water could cause fluorosis, joint pain, severe anaemia, and other problems. The following review focuses on current findings regarding the utilisation of CNTs and AC nanoparticles in the elimination of harmful contaminants and fluoride.

Abstract:High levels of fluoride, though, naturally occurring (which can reach as high as 2,800 mg F−/L) in the environment can be toxic to various living organisms. Moreover, it can be transported by water and by its confluences and exacerbated by anthropogenic activities making it an environmental and public health concern. World Health Organization has set the standard for drinking water at 1.5 mg F−/L while the average national effluent standard is 15 mg F−/L. Hence, different defluoridation techniques of aqueous solutions were developed in the past years. This study provides an overview of the popular methods in defluoridation (i.e. adsorption, ion-exchangers, precipitation, membrane, electrocoagulation, and electro-dialysis). The mechanisms, critical operational conditions, and research progress are presented. The results further reveal that adsorption, regarded as the primary technique for defluoridation, still needs further development and mostly on its bench-scale and is only proven effective at low initial concentrations. In this study, sorption techniques are also estimated to be 10 to 20 times more expensive in operational costs relative to the other treatments. Furthermore, the majority of the examined literature demonstrated defluoridation at limited initial concentration <100 mg F−/L. In contrast, industrial effluents may reach 250–1,000 mg F−/L (up to ∼10,000 mg F−/L at extreme cases). Inadequate removal of fluoride in water by single treatment also compels researchers to explore hybrid treatments. In addition, due to the lack of wastewater treatment facilities requiring high capital cost, bioremediation, a commonly overlooked alternative, is presented for temporarily alleviating fluoride levels. Finally, challenges such as limited literature for disposal of secondary pollution and cost evaluation along with other potential research perspectives are further discussed.

A Review of the Most Concerning Chemical Contaminants in Drinking Water for Human Health

Abstract:Chemical contaminants in drinking water, including arsenic, nitrate, and fluoride, pose significant health risks, particularly in low-income countries with inadequate water management infrastructure. This study aims to identify the most hazardous chemical contaminants, evaluate global drinking water quality, and assess health impacts based on a comprehensive literature review guided by the PRISMA method. The findings revealed that arsenic concentrations in Romania, Pakistan, and India exceed the WHO and USEPA safety thresholds, with maximum levels reaching 130.3 μg/L. Nitrate levels in India and Morocco were found to be as high as 844 mg/L and 270.1 mg/L, respectively, far surpassing safety standards. Fluoride contamination in Pakistan reached 30 mg/L, well above the recommended limits. These contaminants are primarily sourced from industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and improper waste disposal. The study highlights significant regional disparities, with 67% of reports from low-income countries and 88% of contamination cases linked to groundwater sources. The results underscore the urgent need for improved monitoring, stricter regulations, and effective management strategies to mitigate health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants and children. Governments and international bodies must prioritise addressing chemical contamination to protect public health.

It is of utmost importance to assimilate the details of different physico-chemical parameters viz. color, temperature, acidity, hardness, pH, sulphar and chloride content, DO, BOD, COD, alkalinity used for testing of water quality. Few metals viz. fluoride, lead and arsenic in their ionic form are of are major source of water contamination affecting the aquatic ecosystem and terrestrial life forms. The paper addresses the effect of different adsorbents used for removal of fluoride, arsenic and lead.
Fluoride in drinking water: a scientific review of EPA's standards

Abstract:Most people associate fluoride with the practice of intentionally adding fluoride to public drinking water supplies for the prevention of tooth decay. However, fluoride can also enter public water systems from natural sources, including runoff from the weathering of fluoride-containing rocks and soils and leaching from soil into groundwater. Fluoride pollution from various industrial emissions can also contaminate water supplies. In a few areas of the United States fluoride concentrations in water are much higher than normal, mostly from natural sources. Fluoride is one of the drinking water contaminants regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because it can occur at these toxic levels. In 1986, the EPA established a maximum allowable concentration for fluoride in drinking water of 4 milligrams per liter, a guideline designed to prevent the public from being exposed to harmful levels of fluoride. Fluoride in Drinking Water reviews research on various health effects from exposure to fluoride, including studies conducted in the last 10 years.

Abstract:Fluoride (F ̄) contamination in groundwater in India has gained global attention due to human health hazards. India's hydrogeological heterogeneity, spatio-temporal variability of F ̄, and health hazards due to geogenic and geo-environmental control pose unique challenges. Addressing these with only a single region-specific study is not possible. Therefore, this study provides an in-depth, holistic analysis of pan India F ̄ contamination, controlling factors, and health hazards using a coupled advanced geostatistical and geospatial approach. Alarming F ̄ contaminations are identified in Rajasthan, Telangana, Western Andhra Pradesh, Eastern Karnataka, Parts of Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. Probabilistic health-risk evaluation using hot-spot, showed similar spatio-temporal distribution of F ̄ contamination. The hazard quotient (HQ) for high F ̄ shows more adversity to children than adults. Nationally, 8.65 % and 7.10 % of pre- and post-monsoon sites exceed the recommended safe limit of 1.50 mg/L. The highest average F ̄ concentration is in Rajasthan. Very high-risk skeletal fluorosis is possible at around ≤ 2 %, whereas dental caries due to deficiency in F ̄ concentration is approximately 40 %. A decisive hierarchy of lithology, geomorphology, soils, and lineaments control are identified on F ̄ contamination. Climatic conditions are pivotal in governing all these controlling variables. Thus, in arid/semi-arid dry western regions, F ̄ contamination is much higher than in the humid areas. Integration of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis with the results can aid policymakers and government authorities in achieving sustainable remedial measures for future adaptability.
