Abstract:Fluoride contamination in the groundwater of Pakistan is widespread with serious potential health consequences. We determine the groundwater of Isa Khel Tehsil upper Indus plain for drinking purposes and fluoride contamination by collecting 236 water samples from the water supply schemes supplied with groundwater. Results show that the majority of the parameters exceed the standard concentration of potable water. The concentration of fluoride ranges from 0.02 to 5.35 mg/L with an average of 1.8 mg/L, and about 58.5% of the collected samples have higher fluoride concentration than the allowed limit for drinking purposes. Fluoride pollution index results show that about 48.73% of samples have a high level of risk, 41.95% samples of the study area have medium level and only 9.32% of the water samples show low level of fluoride contamination. The health risk assessment due to fluoride contamination was computed based on chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ). For adult's variation in CDI and HQ ranges from 0.001–0.15 mg/kg/day and 0.001–2.55 respectively whereas in children it ranges from 0.001–0.29 mg/kg/day and 0.02–4.84. Health risk assessment parameters indicate that in the case of adults, about 40.25% of samples exceeded the maximum allowed value of hazard quotient i.e., HQ > 1, while for children, about 66.95% of samples have HQ > 1, which means that children are at higher risk than adults because of higher vulnerability to fluoride contamination in drinking water. Thus, there is a need for effective groundwater monitoring and management in the study region to safeguard residents from various illnesses associated with drinking water with varying fluoride concentrations.

Abstract:Consumption of high fluoride (F − ) and nitrate (NO 3 − ) containing water may pose serious health hazards. One hundred sixty-one groundwater samples were collected from drinking wells in Khushab district, Punjab Province, Pakistan, to determine the causes of elevated F − and NO 3 − concentrations, and to estimate the human health risks posed by groundwater contamination. The results showed pH of the groundwater samples ranged from slightly neutral to alkaline, and Na + and HCO 3 − ions dominated the groundwater. Piper diagram and bivariate plots indicated that the key factors regulating groundwater hydrochemistry were weathering of silicates, dissolution of evaporates, evaporation, cation exchange, and anthropogenic activities. The F − content of groundwater ranged from 0.06 to 7.9 mg/L, and 25.46% of groundwater samples contained high-level fluoride concentration (F − > 1.5 mg/L), which exceeds the (WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality: incorporating the first and second addenda, WHO, Geneva, 2022) guidelines of drinking-water quality. Inverse geochemical modeling indicates that weathering and dissolution of fluoride-rich minerals were the primary causes of F − in groundwater. High F − can be attributed to low concentration of calcium-containing minerals along the flow path. The concentrations of NO 3 − in groundwater varied from 0.1 to 70 mg/L; some samples are slightly exceeding the (WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality: incorporating the first and second addenda, WHO, Geneva, 2022) guidelines for drinking-water quality. Elevated NO 3 − content was attributed to the anthropogenic activities revealed by PCA analysis. The high levels of nitrates found in the study region are a result of various human-caused factors, including leaks from septic systems, the use of nitrogen-rich fertilizers, and waste from households, farming operations, and livestock. The hazard quotient (HQ) and total hazard index (THI) of F − and NO 3 − showed high non-carcinogenic risk (> 1) via groundwater consumption, demonstrating a high potential risk to the local population. This study is significant because it is the most comprehensive examination of water quality, groundwater hydrogeochemistry, and health risk assessment in the Khushab district to date, and it will serve as a baseline for future studies. Some sustainable measures are urgent to reduce the F − and NO 3 − content in the groundwater.

Abstract:Hydroxylations of pregnenolone (PREG) at the 7 alpha-and 7 beta-positions have been reported in numerous murine tissues and organs, including liver, and the responsible cytochrome P450 (P450) species await identification. Using thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and crystallization to constant specific activity, we report identification of 7 alpha-hydroxy-PREG and 7 beta-hydroxy-PREG metabolites produced in mouse liver microsomes and kinetic studies of their production with apparent KM values of 2.45 +/- 0.124 microM and 3.41 +/- 0.236 microM for 7 alpha- and 7 beta-hydroxylation, respectively. Investigation of P450 inhibitors and of steroid hormone effects on both 7 alpha- and 7 beta-hydroxylation of PREG showed that 1) different P450 were involved because metyrapone and antipyrine inhibited solely 7 alpha-and 7 beta-hydroxylation, respectively; 2) P450 1A2, 2D6, 2B1, and 2B11 were not responsible for 7 alpha and 7 beta-hydroxylation of PREG because respective specific inhibitors furafylline, quinidine, and chloramphenicol triggered no inhibition; 3) P450 1A1 was responsible for only part of the 7 beta-hydroxylation of PREG because alpha-naphthoflavone, which inhibits specifically P450 1A1, did not suppress entirely 7 beta-hydroxylation while ketoconazole, antipyrine, and metyrapone extensively decreased the 7 beta-hydroxylation; 4) comparison of these findings with those obtained with brain microsomes suggests that tissue-specific P450 species are responsible for the 7 alpha-and 7 beta-hydroxylation of PREG; and 5) 7 alpha-hydroxylation of PREG may be shared with other 3 beta-hydroxysteroids such as isoandrosterone, 5-androstene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol, and dehydroepiandrosterone, which acted in a competitive manner. Taken together, these findings will be of use for identification of the P450 species responsible for 7 alpha- and 7 beta-hydroxylation of PREG and for studies of their activities in liver and other organs.

Abstract:This study investigated the levels of fluoride (F) and nitrate (NO 3 ) and their associated potential health implications via the consumption of drinking water from different sources across various provinces of Pakistan. A dataset comprising mean values of F and NO 3 based over the past 20 years (2002−2022) published were collected from Willey, ResearchGate, Springer, Mendeley, Science Direct, Google Scholar, etc. The data was plotted on their locations using spatial distribution maps, which showed high variations in concentrations of F and NO 3 . Results revealed that the highest F contents were noted in the Sindh province and NO 3 levels in the Punjab province. These results indicated that excessive and inadequate F concentrations pose potential health risks. Similarly, elevated NO 3 levels in Punjab and Sindh provinces could pose health hazards like blue-baby syndrome and various diseases. The nitrate pollution index (NPI) revealed diverse patterns, signifying distinct pollution sources across Pakistan. According to NPI results, the Baluchistan and Punjab provinces exhibited very high NO 3 pollution (NPI > 3) compared to others. The non-carcinogenic hazard quotient (HQ) for F and NO 3 was higher than 1 for children in the Sindh and Punjab provinces, respectively. In contrast, the lowest of 0.1 was noted for adults in the Gilgit-Baltistan province due to F intake. The results revealed that children were considered more vulnerable to F and NO 3 than adults in the country. The current study recommended the proper mitigation strategies for each province, especially in the Punjab and Sindh provinces, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary studies to bridge knowledge gaps and ensure sustainable water management practices.

Water Contamination and Human Health Risks in Pakistan: A Review

Abstract:Water contamination is one of the most significant hazards to human health on the world scale. Drinking water quality in Pakistan is decreasing gradually due to alarming population growth, rapid industrialization, climate change and lack of efficient water quality management. In Pakistan, the majority of the population doesn't have access to safe and healthy drinking water sources, and people are forced to use unsafe drinking water. This review compiled data from multiple studies published in international and national journals from 2010 to 2022 and reports issued by the governments and non-governmental institutions to highlight Pakistan's drinking water quality status, and to emphasize major water pollutants, sources of contaminants, and significant health problems. The results revealed that bacteriological contamination such as coliforms (total coliform, fecal coliform, Escherichia coli ), toxic elements like arsenic (As), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), chloride (Cl − ), fluoride (F − ), mercury (Hg) and pesticides were found in both surface water and groundwater, and were the major causes of waterborne diseases. The majority of sampled water had bacteriological, physicochemical and toxic metals concentrations exceeding the National Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) and WHO drinking water quality standards. There is an immediate need to adopt water management strategies and protective measures to overcome the shortages and unhygienic conditions of the drinking water supply in Pakistan.

Abstract:Arsenic(As)-mediated contamination of groundwater resources in different parts of the world is a consequence of natural or anthropogenic sources, leading to adverse effects on the environment and human health. Millions of people from different countries are unfortunately consuming groundwater contaminated with alarming levels of As. Exposure to the high concentration of As for an extended period of time can cause devastating effects on human health such as skin lesions, cardiac disorders, discolouration and cancer. Until 2018, about 11 districts of Sindh and Punjab provinces in Pakistan had been found with As contamination in groundwater beyond the national defined permissible level, i.e. 50 µg/L. Tharparkar and Hyderabad (in Sindh province) along Indus river and Lahore and Kasur (in Punjab province) are well-known hotspots sites of natural geogenic As contamination in groundwater. Higher levels of Sulfates (SO42−), Chloride (Cl−) and Carbonate (CO32−) along with the elevated values of electrical conductivity and basic pH, as well as augmented presence of “As V” species, were all an indication of oxidizing condition in groundwater, and these oxidizing conditions are identified as the primary mechanism of As contamination into aquifers of Pakistan via oxidative dissolution. The main aim of this review is to summarize and discuss the current contamination status of As in groundwater water globally with a special focus on Pakistan scenario, isotopic evidence to track sources of groundwater recharge and its effects on As contamination in groundwater with various redox conditions prevailing in Pakistan. In addition, public health consequences of As contamination and mitigation strategies for As removal from water resources have been also highlighted. In this review, the data were extracted from various cutting edge studies published in national and international journals.

Abstract:Chronic exposure to high fluoride (F - ) levels in groundwater causes community fluorosis and non-carcinogenic health concerns in local people. This study described occurrence, dental fluorosis, and origin of high F-groundwater using δ 2 H and δ 18 O isotopes at semiarid Gilgit, Pakistan. Therefore, groundwater (n = 85) was collected and analyzed for F - concentrations using ion-chromatography. The lowest F - concentration was 0.4 mg/L and the highest 6.8 mg/L. F - enrichment is linked with higher pH, NaHCO 3 , NaCl, δ 18 O, Na + , HCO 3 - , and depleted Ca +2 aquifers. The depleted δ 2 H and δ 18 O values indicated precipitation and higher values represented the evaporation effect. Thermodynamic considerations of fluorite minerals showed undersaturation, revealing that other F-bearing minerals viz. biotite and muscovite were essential in F - enrichment in groundwater. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and principal component analysis multilinear regression (PCAMLR) models were used to determine four-factor solutions for groundwater contamination. The PMF model results were accurate and reliable compared with those of the PCAMLR model, which compiled the overlapping results. Therefore, 28.3% exceeded the WHO permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L F - . Photomicrographs of granite rocks showed enriched F-bearing minerals that trigger F - in groundwater. The community fluorosis index values were recorded at > 0.6, revealing community fluorosis and unsuitability of groundwater for drinking.

Abstract:Groundwater from alluvial fan plains is the prevailing water source, especially for arid/semiarid regions, but its contamination poses substantial risks to water supply and public health. The recent study aims to assess the hydro-geochemistry, distribution, and potential health risks of NO 3 − , NO 2 − , and F − concentrations in the groundwater of previously unexplored health facilities in District Vehari, Punjab, Pakistan. In total, 75 groundwater samples were evaluated for NO 3 − , NO 2 − , and F − levels as well as pH, EC, TDS, CO 3 2− , HCO 3 − , Cl − , Na + , Fe, K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , taste, odor, color, and turbidity. The Durav graph shows that the water type is Na-HCO 3 -Ca, with Na and HCO 3 dominant, weak acids > strong acids, and alkaline ions > alkalis. Results revealed that drinking water samples (21.73% and 20%) taken from Tehsil Mailsi, and the Basic Health Unit (BHU) exceeded the WHO standard (1.5 mg/L) for F − concentration, respectively. Moreover, the mean chronic daily intake (CDI) of F − was 0.044, 0.018, and 0.02 mg/kg/day in children, men, and women, respectively. Similarly, the average CDI of NO 3 − was 0.113, 0.046, and 0.050 in children, men, and women, respectively, and the respective values of NO 2 − were 0.004, 0.001, and 0.001. The NO 2 − shows a significant range of hazard quotient (HQ) (0.0–1.172) in children. The range of HQ for F − was 0.0–3.114, 0.0–1.290, and 0.0–1.389 in children, men, and women, respectively. Additionally, the health risks analysis revealed an HQ > 1.0 for children in groundwater, indicating a potential carcinogenic risk from the F − . Pearson correlation and PCA analysis found a significant positive correlation (0.8) between NO 3 − and NO 2 − and a negative correlation (0.3) between F − and HCO 3 − . These findings highlight the need for groundwater treatment in healthcare facilities prior to water consumption. Enforcing international and national drinking water standards in healthcare units is vital to strengthening services and providing equitable access to safe drinking water. Legislative and efficient water management measures must be taken for the protection of public health.

Abstract:Fluoride (F - ), and arsenic (As) in the groundwater cause health problems in developing countries, including Pakistan. We evaluated the occurrence, distribution, sources apportionment, and health hazards of F - , and As in the groundwater of Mardan, Pakistan. Therefore, groundwater samples (n = 130) were collected and then analyzed for F - , and As by ion-chromatography (IC) and Inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). The F - , and As concentrations in groundwater were 0.7–14.4 mg/L and 0.5–11.2 μg/L. Relatively elevated F - , and As coexists with higher pH, Na + , HCO 3 - , SO 4 −2 , and depleted Ca +2 due to fluoride, sulfide-bearing minerals, and anthropogenic inputs. Both F - , and/or As are transported in subsurface water through adsorption and desorption processes. Groundwater samples 45%, and 14.2% exceeded the WHO guidelines of 1.5 mg/L and 10 μg/L. Water quality indexing (WQI-model) declared that 35.7% samples are unfit for household purposes. Saturation and undersaturation of minerals showed precipitation and mineral dissolution. Groundwater contamination by PCA-MLR and PMF-model interpreted five factors. The fitting results and R 2 values of PMF (0.52–0.99)>PCA-MLR (0.50–0.95) showed high accuracy of PMF-model. Human health risk assessment (HHRA-model) revealed high non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for children than adults. The percentile recovery of F - and As was recorded 98%, and 95% with reproducibility ± 5% error.

Abstract:High arsenic (As), fluoride (F - ), and microbial pathogens coexist in semiarid conditions afflicting > 240 million people worldwide including Pakistan. Groundwater quality has declined due to geogenic and manmade activities providing suitable ground for ubiquity, bioavailability, and toxicity of contaminants. We tested the health hazard, distribution, and apportionment of As, F - , and microbes in groundwater around coal mines in Quetta, Pakistan. The range of As, and F - concentrations in groundwater were 0.2–16.6 μg/L, 0.4–18.5 mg/L. Both, As and F - correlate with high HCO 3 - , pH, Na + , SO 4 2- , Fe , and Mn, and negatively with Ca 2+ water. The coalfield showed many folds higher As 15.8–28.5 μg/L, and F - 10.8–34.5 mg/L compared to groundwater-wells. Geochemical phases revealed saturation of groundwater with calcite, dolomite, fluorite, gypsum, and undersaturation with halite-mirabilite, and arsenopyrite minerals. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model assessed five-factor solutions: geogenic, industrial, coal mining, sulfide & fluoride-bearing mineral-dissolution, and agriculture pollution delivered As, F - , and microbial contamination. About 24.6 % and 64.4 % of groundwater samples exceeded the WHO guidelines of As 10 μg/L, F - 1.5 mg/L. The carcinogenicity, and non-carcinogenicity of As, and F - were higher in children than adults. Therefore, health hazards in children are of great concern in achieving sustainable management goals.

Abstract:Accurate aminoacylation of a tRNA by Escherichia coli methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MTS) is specified by the CAU anticodon. A genetic screening procedure was designed to isolate MTS mutants able to aminoacylate a methionine amber tRNA (CUA anticodon). Selected suppressor MTS enzymes all possess one or several mutations in the vicinity of Trp-461, a residue that is the major contributor to the stability of complexes formed with tRNAs having the cognate CAU anticodon. Analysis of catalytic properties of purified suppressor enzymes shows that they have acquired an additional specificity toward the amber anticodon without complete disruption of the methionine anticodon site. It is concluded that both positive and negative discrimination toward the binding of tRNA anticodon sequences is restricted to a limited region of the synthetase, residues 451-467.
A Review of the Most Concerning Chemical Contaminants in Drinking Water for Human Health

Abstract:Chemical contaminants in drinking water, including arsenic, nitrate, and fluoride, pose significant health risks, particularly in low-income countries with inadequate water management infrastructure. This study aims to identify the most hazardous chemical contaminants, evaluate global drinking water quality, and assess health impacts based on a comprehensive literature review guided by the PRISMA method. The findings revealed that arsenic concentrations in Romania, Pakistan, and India exceed the WHO and USEPA safety thresholds, with maximum levels reaching 130.3 μg/L. Nitrate levels in India and Morocco were found to be as high as 844 mg/L and 270.1 mg/L, respectively, far surpassing safety standards. Fluoride contamination in Pakistan reached 30 mg/L, well above the recommended limits. These contaminants are primarily sourced from industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and improper waste disposal. The study highlights significant regional disparities, with 67% of reports from low-income countries and 88% of contamination cases linked to groundwater sources. The results underscore the urgent need for improved monitoring, stricter regulations, and effective management strategies to mitigate health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants and children. Governments and international bodies must prioritise addressing chemical contamination to protect public health.

Abstract:Fluoride (F ̄) contamination in groundwater in India has gained global attention due to human health hazards. India's hydrogeological heterogeneity, spatio-temporal variability of F ̄, and health hazards due to geogenic and geo-environmental control pose unique challenges. Addressing these with only a single region-specific study is not possible. Therefore, this study provides an in-depth, holistic analysis of pan India F ̄ contamination, controlling factors, and health hazards using a coupled advanced geostatistical and geospatial approach. Alarming F ̄ contaminations are identified in Rajasthan, Telangana, Western Andhra Pradesh, Eastern Karnataka, Parts of Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. Probabilistic health-risk evaluation using hot-spot, showed similar spatio-temporal distribution of F ̄ contamination. The hazard quotient (HQ) for high F ̄ shows more adversity to children than adults. Nationally, 8.65 % and 7.10 % of pre- and post-monsoon sites exceed the recommended safe limit of 1.50 mg/L. The highest average F ̄ concentration is in Rajasthan. Very high-risk skeletal fluorosis is possible at around ≤ 2 %, whereas dental caries due to deficiency in F ̄ concentration is approximately 40 %. A decisive hierarchy of lithology, geomorphology, soils, and lineaments control are identified on F ̄ contamination. Climatic conditions are pivotal in governing all these controlling variables. Thus, in arid/semi-arid dry western regions, F ̄ contamination is much higher than in the humid areas. Integration of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis with the results can aid policymakers and government authorities in achieving sustainable remedial measures for future adaptability.

Abstract:Water quality has been a major problem in Pakistan owing to a mix of factors such as population expansion, industrial units in urban areas, and agricultural activities. The purpose of this research is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of water quality monitoring and assessment in Pakistan. The article begins by examining the water sources of Pakistan (i.e., surface water, groundwater, and rainwater). The paper then discusses the methods used by researchers in Pakistan for water quality monitoring and assessment, including chemical, physical, and biological methods. It has been determined that in certain regions in Pakistan, the concentration of arsenic present in the groundwater exceeds the national and international prescribed maximum limits. The range of arsenic concentrations in the Punjab province can vary from 10 to 200 μg/L, while higher concentrations of up to 1400 μg/L have been recorded in Sindh. In the Punjab province, fluoride concentrations vary from 0.5 to 30 mg/L, while in Sindh, the levels can reach up to 18 mg/L. In addition, some of the research has talked about bacteria. A 2017 study found that the fecal coliform concentrations in certain water in different cities of Pakistan surpassed limits and were as high as 1100 CFU/100 mL. Additionally, natural factors such as geological formations and high salinity in some areas contribute to the contamination of water. The effect of water pollution on public health has the potential to cause harm. It is critical to investigate creative strategies for improving water quality, and it is necessary to make investments in research and development, which could include the implementation of sophisticated technologies and the conception of new treatment processes. The review performed in this paper facilitates an understanding of the current water quality in Pakistan, including the types and magnitudes of contaminants present in the water sources. Subsequently, the assessment emphasizes deficiencies and challenges in the existing water quality monitoring frameworks and provides suggestions for improving them. This review is also of significant benefit to all the stakeholders involved in ensuring clean and safe water for human consumption and other purposes in Pakistan, such as policymakers, water managers, researchers, and other stakeholders.

Abstract:Drinking water quality deteriorates rapidly due to anthropogenic activities and rapid population growth. These activities, in developing countries, will lead to water scarcity. In Pakistan, 70% of the population has no access to safe water, and people use canal water to drink. This study performed hydrochemical, hydrogeological, and cancer risk analyses on Tahsil Hasilpur, Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Thirteen tube wells were selected for groundwater and borehole log study. Twenty-two drinking water quality parameters were analyzed using standard methods and quality checks. The borehole data (2D and 3D) shows the abundance of sand (fine and coarse) with some uniformities, which changes the groundwater quality. The results of water quality parameters show that the concentration of TDS (2064–11,159 mg/L), Cl −1 (213–4917 mg/L), As +3 (0.048–0.158 mg/L), Pb +2 (1.294–1.673 mg/L), and Cd +2 (0.008–0.053 mg/L) were beyond guideline values. The statistical analysis showed that the parameters have a moderate to strong correlation (Pearson correlation), which may be due to the same origin (ANOVA). The principal component analysis and cluster analysis confirm the multiple sources of pollutants in the groundwater of the study area. The Piper, Durov, Stiff, and Scholler diagrams confirm that the groundwater system has an abundance of Ca +2 and Mg +2 with Cl −1 . The Gibbs diagram showed that the groundwater is not saturated and tends to dissolve more minerals. The hazard quotient values are above 1.0, which indicates noncancer risk severity. The HQ trend was As +3 > Pb +2 > Cd +2 > Ni +2 > Cu +2 > Cr +2 > Zn +2 > Fe +2 . The cancer risk values showed that 3–5 people/100 population were exposed to cancer risk. The trend of CR was As +3 > Cd +2 > Cr +2 > Pb +2 > Ni +2 . The GIP mapping of pollutants showed that the concentration of pollutants near the canals was high compared to the locations away from the canal. The overall groundwater quality is alarming and needs immediate government attention.

Abstract:Water-related impacts due to change in climatic conditions ranging from water scarcity to intense floods and storms are increasing in developing countries like Pakistan. Water quality and waterborne diseases like hepatitis, cholera, typhoid, malaria and dengue fever are increasing due to chaotic urbanization, industrialization, poor hygienic conditions, and inappropriate water management. The morbidity rate is high due to lack of health care facilities, especially in developing countries. Organizations linked to the Government of Pakistan (e.g., Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Climate Change, Planning and Development, Ministry of Forest, Irrigation and Public Health, Pakistan Meteorological Department, National Disaster Management, Pakistan Agricultural Research Centre, Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources, and Global Change Impact Study Centre), United Nation organizations, provincial government departments, non-governmental organizations (e.g., Global Facility and Disaster Reduction), research centers linked to universities, and international organizations (International Institute for Sustainable Development, Food and Agriculture, Global Climate Fund and World Bank) are trying to reduce the water-related impacts of climate change, but due to lack of public awareness and health care infrastructure, the death rate is steadily increasing. This paper critically reviews the scientific studies and reports both at national and at international level benefiting generalists concerned with environmental and public health challenges. The article underlines the urgent need for water conservation, risk management, and the development of mitigation measures to cope with the water-related impacts of climate change on agriculture and subsequently on public health. Novel solutions and bioremediation methods have been presented to control environmental pollution and to promote awareness among the scientific community. The focus is on diverse strategies to handle the forthcoming challenges associated with water resources management.

Abstract:Due to the increase in industrialization, climate change, and urbanization, the quality of drinking water is declining day by day. Fluoride levels in drinking water have seen a remarkable increase in several places across the world in the last decade. The accumulation of fluoride in an aqueous environment is caused by both natural as well as anthropogenic sources. The main concern regarding fluoride contamination is dental and bones related issues. According to WHO guidelines, the permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L. Fluoride contamination causes a detrimental effect on the health of the people. This article highlights the distribution of fluoride in India, as well as the many routes by which it enters the human body and probable fluoride metabolism inside the body. The numerous strategies used to remediate fluoride from water, like precipitation/coagulation, ion exchange, membrane separation, electro-separation, and adsorption are elaborated. Amongst these techniques, adsorption is one of the best-optimized techniques involving sustainable materials like biochars, which are cost-effective, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly adsorbents.
Assessing Potable Water Quality and Identifying Areas of Waterborne Diarrheal and Fluorosis Health Risks Using Spatial Interpolation in Peshawar, Pakistan

Abstract:Waterborne diseases have become one of the major public health concerns worldwide. This study is aimed to investigate and develop spatial distribution mapping of the potable water quality parameters in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan. A total of 108 water samples collected across the entire study area were subjected to physio-chemical and biological analyses. Tested parameters included pH, turbidity, temperature, fluoride concentration levels, and bacterial counts (faecal coliforms). Inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation in geographic information systems (GIS) was used for spatial analysis. Test results revealed that 48% of water samples had faecal coliforms count (per 100 mL) greater than World Health Organization (WHO) minimum limits, while 31% of samples had fluoride concentrations in excess of the WHO maximum guide values. Spatial distribution mapping was developed for faecal coliforms count and fluoride ion concentration using ArcGIS to highlight the high-risk settlements in the study area. Results showed that around 20% area under faecal coliforms and approximately 33% area based on fluoride concentrations fall under the need for treatment category. The pH and turbidity were found in compliance with WHO desirable limits. The sanitary inspection score significantly depicted that ineffective multi-barrier approaches consequently deteriorated the water quality at the consumer’s end. Findings from the present study shall be useful to policymakers for adopting necessary remedial measures before it severely affects public health.

Nalgonda procedure is one of the well-known strategies generally utilized for defluoridation of water as a part of developing nations, for example, India, Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania. Among different techniques utilized for defluoridation of water, the adsorption procedure is broadly utilized.
