Abstract:This review presents an overview on the application of latent fingerprint development techniques in forensic sciences. At present, traditional developing methods such as powder dusting, cyanoacrylate fuming, chemical method, and small particle reagent method, have all been gradually compromised given their emerging drawbacks such as low contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity, as well as high toxicity. Recently, much attention has been paid to the use of fluorescent nanomaterials including quantum dots (QDs) and rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials (UCNMs) due to their unique optical and chemical properties. Thus, this review lays emphasis on latent fingerprint development based on QDs and UCNMs. Compared to latent fingerprint development by traditional methods, the new methods using fluorescent nanomaterials can achieve high contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity while showing reduced toxicity. Overall, this review provides a systematic overview on such methods.

Abstract:Due to the aggregation-caused quenching effects resulted from π-π interactions or resonance energy transfer, obtaining luminescent carbon dots (CDs) in solid states still remain as a huge challenge. Herein, a facile one-step strategy for the preparation of solid-state carbon dots phosphors with high yield (around 80%) has been developed via microwave-assistant reaction between malic acid and levofloxacin. Thus, solid-state carbon dots with fluorine and nitrogen as heteratomic dopants were successfully synthesized with bright blue fluorescence under UV light, with a quantum yield of 18.9%. Through the optical analysis, the fluorescence of obtained fluorine, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (FNCDs) in both solution and solid state were observed as excitation-independent. In order to investigate the solid state emission mechanism, additional structural analysis was conducted. The skeleton of levofloxacin was retained in solid state CDs together with the carbon-containing and oxygen-containing functional groups, which have suppressed the π-π interactions, thus resulting in self-quenching resistant carbon dots powder. Moreover, the phosphors were further used for fingerprint identification and anti-counterfeiting, approving their potential applications in practical areas.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.

Abstract:The emergence and fast development of carbon dots (CDs) provide an unprecedented opportunity for applications in the field of photoelectricity, but their practicability still suffers from complicated synthesis procedures and the substrate dependence of solid-state fluorescence. In this study, we design a unique microwave-assisted solid-phase synthesis route for preparing tunable fluorescent CD powders with yellow, orange, and red fluorescence (Y-CDs, O-CDs, R-CDs) by simply adjusting the mass ratio of reactants, a method which is suitable for the large-scale synthesis of CDs. The Y-/O-/R-CDs were systematically characterized using physics and spectroscopy techniques. Based on the perfect solid-state fluorescence performance of the proposed fluorescent CD powders, the Y-/O-/R-CDs were successfully applied for the construction of multi-color and white light-emitting diode devices at low cost. Furthermore, the Y-CDs displayed much higher yield and luminous efficiency than the O-CDs and R-CDs and were further used for fingerprint identification on the surfaces of glass sheets and tinfoil. In addition, the R-CD aqueous solution fluorescence is sensitive to pH, suggesting its use as a pH indicator for monitoring intracellular pH fluctuations. The proposed series of fluorescent powders composed of CDs may herald a new era in the application of optical components and criminal investigation fields.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon quantum dots (CDs), as one of the most potential fluorescent sensing materials, have attracted lots of attention in recent years. However, the low quantum yields, complicated separation and purification procedures have limited its application and large-scale production. In this paper, a facile and universal method was successfully developed to synthesize CDs-silica (SiO 2 ) spheres composites (CS composites), which not only demonstrates 10-fold fluorescence enhancement compared with single CDs but also enables the purification with a simple centrifugation step. Meanwhile, fabricated composites also presented superior photoluminescence (PL) stability and high PL intensity, even in some tough environments such as acid/alkali aqueous solution, high/low temperature, and high ion concentration aqueous solution. This simple, fast, low-cost, and efficient synthesis method would potentially expand the application of CDs for clinical analysis, optical sensing (ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) and pyrophosphate), bioimaging and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Abstract:In this study, homogeneous carbon dots with yellow fluorescence and high absolute fluorescence quantum yields (78.6%) were firstly prepared through a one-step solvothermal method without complicated process of separation, in which sodium citrate, carbamide, and anhydrous calcium chloride were adopted as precursors, while toluene was selected as solvent. The as-prepared carbon dots with an average size of 5.9 nm have a high degree of crystallinity. According to the discussion of the formation mechanism carbon dots, it is found that the toluene guarantee the formation of crystalline core and Ca2+ promotes the formation of carbonaceous core with high crystallinity, which is responsible for the ultrahigh quantum yield. Furthermore, the fluorescent properties of carbon dots are excellent in organic solvents and could be quenched by water, making them a promising material used without any modification in the detection of water in organic solvents, which has a great influence on organic chemical reaction, and may even determine the resultant, yield, and selectivity of organic reaction.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate visual identification of latent fingerprints is crucial in areas such as criminal investigation and information security. Aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) fluorescent materials are widely used in this field because of their strong fluorescence and easy functionalization. They have attracted significant interest and emerged as a promising area since the introduction of the AIE concept. Here a new water-soluble fluorescent nanoparticle, flu-p-DITPA, through amphiphilic self-assembly with amphiphilic polymers macro-CTA-mPEG2000 (P1) and exhibits typical AIE properties. The core molecule, indo-DITPA, derived from the triphenylamine backbone, was obtained through rational molecular design and theoretical calculations, and the calculated results were confirmed with experimental results. The photophysical properties of indo-DITPA and flu-p-DITPA have been meticulously studied, revealing their remarkable characteristics. Taking advantage of their favorable photophysical properties, good water solubility, and biocompatibility, the researchers have devised a simple yet effective method for visualizing latent fingerprints (LFPs) with high resolution under UV light. This method enables the easy decoding of latent fingerprint information at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Importantly, this technique is simple, rapid, and user-friendly, marking a significant step forward in the field of forensic science and fingerprint analysis.

Abstract:Brightly red fluorescent carbon dots are synthesized hydrothermally and dissolved in diluted hydrochloric acid solution. Such carbon dots exhibit excitation-independent emission at about 620 nm with quantum yield over 10%, which is visible in daylight. After the carbon dots solution is sprayed to the fingerprints on various solid substrates and dried in air, clear fingerprints can be seen under an ultraviolet lamp and stay stable for 1 day. Detailed characterizations suggest that during the drying process, the coffee-ring effect and the electrostatic interactions between the carbon dots and the fingerprint residues prevent the typical aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching of carbon dots.

Abstract:The aggregation-induced quenching (AIQ) properties of the solid-state carbon dots (CDs) limit their wide-scale actual applications. Herein, a novel corrosion resistant solid-state () composite was synthesized via in situ embedding CDs into the S-1 matrix. Owing to the confinement effect, CDs are immobilized into the interrupted defects of the three-dimensional S-1 matrix. The as-prepared composite possesses high photoluminescence quantum yield (63%) and extra-high stability in common organic solvents and various pH solutions (pH=2–14). Moreover, the feasibility of the composite as a fluorescent label on various substrates was investigated. The results demonstrate the images with well-defined papillary ridges under ultraviolet (UV) light and show great potential for latent fingerprints detection in forensic science.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots are fabricated by hydrothermal carbonization from heparin sodium. The morphology, structure, emission properties are characterized by using TEM, FTIR, XPS and fluorescent spectra. The results suggest that the carbon nanodots have a relatively uniform size and strong fluorescence; meanwhile they retain the abundant functional groups from the carbon source. As-prepared carbon nanodots can be applied to the detection of Cu2+, and show its potential application value as ion sensor material.

Abstract:Carbon dots represent a kind of fluorescent nanomaterial and have broad application prospects in the field of biosensing and optoelectronics. Here, we explored carbon dots with a high-fluorescence quantum yield rate synthesized from L-cysteine and citric acid by the microwave-assisted method. The characteristics of the carbon dots were studied using a transmission electron microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectra, a UV-Vis absorption spectrometer, a FTIR spectrometer, and a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The obtained carbon dots exhibited a high-fluorescence quantum yield (up to 85%), which is due to the combination of amidogens and sulfydryl with carbon dots, and hence bring the improved fluorescence property. We used carbon dots for in vitro imaging of CRL-5822 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells, which showed the low inhibitory rate (0.8%) of cells for 48 h with good biocompatibility demonstrated by the cell viability assay. The image of cells can be observed clearly under UV light. The Stern-Volmer equation was introduced to describe the quenching effect between the fluorescence intensity of carbon dots and the concentration of aqueous dopamine (DA).

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (FCNs) have gradually become the most promising alternative candidates to other traditional fluorescent nanomaterials for biological applications on account of their excellent fluorescence property and remarkable biocompatibility. Although many methods have reported on the preparation of FCNs, to date, no studies have reported the preparation of polymers of functionalized FCNs. A high-efficiency method was developed in this work to synthesize high-quality poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG)-functionalized FCNs from cigarette ash and thiol group-containing PEG via a facile one-pot ultrasonic irradiation treatment. A series of characterization techniques demonstrated the uniform nanoscale size, good fluorescence stability, high water dispersibility and remarkable biocompatibility of the generated FCNs. Furthermore, cell imaging was easily achieved at high resolution using the synthetic FCNs as probes, which validates their potential for bioimaging applications. In summary, an efficient one-pot strategy is reported for the first time on the preparation of PEG-functionalized FCNs with the assistance of ultrasonic irradiation. This method should be of great research interest for the fabrication of other polymer-functionalized FCNs with designable properties and functions.
