Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern,Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties are known as the middle ancient ages in the history of Chinese literature.The newly unearthed documents will contribute to a reexamination of literary background,literary evolution,literary ontology and stylistic form of these dynasties to correct the traditional heavy reliance in literary history on longitudinal combing.First,unearthed documents play an important role for the research on regional literary history to regain the initiative.Second,the research on unearthed documents is helpful to probe into the literary phenomena buried by history.Third,unearthed documents are significant for the research of essay,especially for the further study on stylistic forms dominated by practical writing.Because unearthed documents are excavated in odds and ends by accident,they should be compared with historical recordation in study.A comprehensive perspective of social-cultural science,based on the restoration of unearthed texts,will thus shed light on the natural process of birth and growth of literature.

Abstract:Since the 1970s,a lot of bamboo slips and silks for writing and missing ancient books have been unearthed for us to rethink,re-understand and re-evaluate ancient Chinese academic history,whose significance can be reflected in the five aspects.First,creditability of ancient books can be recognized;second,writing time can be confirmed roughly;third,academic value can be understood further;fourth,new judgment can be made to the academic origins;fifth,the academic history of some vassal state of the Warring States period can be redefined.On the basis of these discoveries,ancient Chinese academic history may be re-written,which will promote ancient Chinese cultural researches.

Abstract:The text Xi Nian,on the bamboo slips collected by Qinghua University,is a historical record divided into 23 chapters,and similar in structure to the Zhu Shu Ji Nian(Annals on Bamboo Slips).The earliest historical events recorded in Xi Nian occurred in the early Zhou Dynasty,and the latest events occurred in the early Warring States.So Xi Nian must have been written during the reign of King Su of Chu.Compared with history books transmitted from the past,Xi Nian contains much which is new and very important.Some of them confirm the accounts of bronze inscriptions,such as that of the Da Bao Gui,which records that Lu Zi Geng(Geng,the son of Lu)was set up as king when a Shang city revolted after the death of King Wu of Zhou.Some of them can be cross-referenced with the philosophers' books,such as the record of King Cheng of Zhou killing Fei Lian,which accords with the Mengzi but differs from the Shi Ji.Others are related to the Bamboo slips of the Chu State,such as Yang Wei's battle with the army of the Jin State at the Great Wall,an event also recorded on the slips of the Chu State unearthed from Geling.

Abstract:The ascendancy of the Western Zhou in Bronze Age China, 1045–771 BC, was a critical period in the development of Chinese civilisation and culture. This book addresses the complex relationship between geography and political power in the context of the crisis and fall of the Western Zhou state. Abstract:In the flow of history, ancient writing mediums are akin to precious relics, carrying the legacy of millennia of wisdom and culture. A book titled "Script on Bamboo and Silk - Ancient Chinese Textual Records," published by Century Library in 2004, serves as a window through time, guiding us on a marvelous journey into the world of ancient Chinese writing mediums. The author of this book, Qian Cunxun, with his profound research and insightful perspectives, presents to us the historical trajectory of ancient writing mediums such as bamboo slips and silk fabric, exploring their significance and influence in the transmission of ancient culture. Abstract:After the book Bamboo Slips of the Warring States Period Collected by Qinghua University vol.I and vol.II was published,the Institute for Excavated Text Research and Preservation of Qinghua University has restored an additional 6 slips,including portions of 8 texts.Two of the texts are lost poems of the Western Zhou period,one is Zhou Gong Zhi Qin Wu(Dance to Qin Music in Zhou Gong's Reign) of the early Zhou dynasty,and the other is the late Western Zhou Rui Liang Fu Bi(Rui Liangfu's Words).One of the texts is the authentic early Chinese text of Shang Shu —3 sections of Shuo Ming.One is Chi Hu Zhi Ji Tang Zhi Wu(Red Swans Gathered on Tang's House),which records the legend of Tang and Yi Yin.One is Yin Gao Zong Wen Yu San Shou(Emperor Gaozong of Yin Asking San Shou),which purports to be written by Wu Ding and Peng Zu.There is also a text recording virtuous officials from the time of the Yellow Emperor to the Spring and Autunm period.It can be called Liang Chen(Excellent Officials).

Its significance on the study of historical documents is as follows. 1 .They have reflected the ups and downs of the ancient books before the Qin dynasty; 2. Abstract:The prosperous cultural milieu in the early period of the Tang Dynasty has helped Liu Zhiji have a good scholarly culti- vation.He then became an official through the entrance examination.But he got famous during Wu Zetian period due to his advice to the empress,whose commands availed him of an opportunity to compile historical books.It is until Emperor Zhong Zong period that Liu Zhiji ’s masterpiece Shitong came into being in spite of troubles found in the process of compilation.In the survey of Liu Zhiji ’s life,it is easy to see that Wu Zetian period is a crucial one for Liu Zhiji ’s career of historiography.Without this period,it would be impossible for him to compose such an important work Shitong.

Abstract:The conquest of the Shang Dynasty at Anyang around 1046 BCE by the Zhou is one of the major events for not only Chinese Bronze Age but also early interaction between the pastoralist groups from the Eurasian Steppes and agriculture ones in the Central Plains of China. It is well-known from historical texts that the pre-Zhou people lived in the ancient Bin region (豳), the exact location of which is unclear, but most likely in the Jing River valley. At some point the leader Gugong Danfu (古公亶父) moved from Bin to the capital Qi (Zhouyuan), which preceded the Zhou invasion of Anyang. We have produced a new high resolution radiocarbon chronology for Zaolinhetan, a small settlement in the pre-Zhou heartland. This shows not only an exceptionally long chronological span for the site, but also a different phasing compared to the traditional pottery typology, which raises new questions regarding the regional variation of pottery typologies. Intriguingly, the analysis also reveals a rapid abandonment of Zaolinhetan around 1100 BCE, at the same time many larger sites, such as Zhouyuan, which later became the capital of the Western Zhou dynasty, were significantly expanding. We argue that the drastic decline of Zaolinhetan as revealed by the substantial number of radiocarbon dates and probably also the movement of pre-Zhou political center from Bin to Qin, was part of bigger picture that involved a range of social and environmental factors.

Abstract:Anyone who orders the book under review expecting a work which opens up the study of bronze inscriptions in the manner in which David Keightley's Sources of Shang history opened up oracle bone studies will be disappointed. Keightley's book has mistakes and biases. The field has also been radically altered in recent years by a plethora of new publications, discoveries and schemes of periodization, so that, fifteen years on, it is outdated, but it remains a meticulous and invaluable work of reference. Sources of Western Zhou history, on the other hand, makes no serious attempt to present a comprehensive, systematic or unbiased account of the inscriptions or their study.

Abstract:The present chapter deals with the early history and archaeology of the Zhou dynasty (mid-eleventh to third centuries bce ), beginning with the legendary period of early ancestors, traditionally traced back several centuries earlier. Up-to-date efforts of Chinese archaeologists to systematize and to interpret manifold cultural remains from circa the thirteenth to eleventh centuries bce in the present-day Shaanxi province are reviewed with the goal of identifying “proto-Zhou” in the material record. In addition, data are reviewed pertaining to contacts between Zhou and the contemporary political hegemon, Shang, before and during their final collision, after which the Zhou started claiming hegemony for itself. The outline of the “Western Zhou period” ending with the death of King You 幽 (r. 780–771 bce ) is then introduced, touching upon the problems of periodization and of chronologic reconstructions proposed for the date of the conquest of Shang and for early Zhou reigns. Finally, political organization and integrative factors of the Western Zhou period are addressed.
