Abstract:The oracle inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty on tortoiseshells unearthed at the relics of Zhougong Temple in Qishan, Shaanxi Province, which are related with the feature of the relics and the probing of its age, have been widely noticed by the academia and the public. According to the examination on the four published pieces of oracle inscriptions, we may know that some of them surely belong to the early period of the Western Zhou Dynasty and have something to do with Zhougongdan; the others regarded Zhougong Emperor as the main body of divination. Although these pieces can not be proved to be Zhougongdan, they also belong to the early phase of the Western Zhou Dynasty. In a word, all the characteristics of the oracle inscriptions on tortoiseshells are similar to those of the oracle inscriptions unearthed at Fengchu, Qishen, which definitely belong to the early stage of the western Zhou Dynasty.

Abstract:ABSTRACTOracle bone script developed into a sophisticated writing system in Shang Dynasty of China more than 3000 years ago. The systematic scientific dating of oracle bones had not been previously reported. Here we present radiocarbon (14C) dates measured from the sequential samples of oracle bones that pertain to the Shang kings. The results indicate that King Wu Ding (who is called Wu Ting in some literature) reigned during 1254 BC to 1197 BC, and the Shang Dynasty terminated around 1041 BC. It also points that the Li group in the sequence of oracle bones is most probably related to the time of King Wu Ding and Zu Geng.

Abstract:<span>It has been 120 years since the discovery of the oracle bones in 1899, which not only confirmed the existence of the Shang dynasty, but also provided first-hand materials for the study of history of the Shang. In this article, the author divides the 120 years of Shang history into three stages by looking at important discoveries in oracle-bone materials and their compilation. In the first phase, from 1899 to 1927, the oracle bones used were all non-scientific excavated materials, represented by Sun Yirang, Wang Guowei, and Luo Zhenyu. In the second stage, from 1928 to 1977, the oracle bone material entered the scientific discovery stage, represented by Dong Zuobin, Hu Houxuan, and Guo Moruo. In the third stage, from 1978 to the present, the study of the history of the Shang dynasty made considerable progress with the publication of the oracle bones collection and the improvement of recording methods, represented by the works of Qiu Xigui and Li Xueqin.</span>

Abstract:Ban and Rongzhong Quadripod Dings,engraved with precious inscriptions,were collected by Poly Art Museum.Ban Ding was inscribed with38words in two places,they record that Zhou,the last emperor of Shang Dynasty,offered sacrifices to his father Diyi.They also bear that the event happened in yiwei day,May of the twenty-second si(year),which coincides with the date concluded from inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of Shang Dynasty.The description shows that Zhou resided at Lan,where perhaps was located around the Yin Ruins.Rongzhong Ding which includes48words was manufactured at the early stage of Western Zhou,the inscription is relevant to educational system.The date“Shengpoji”,along with the“Zhaisipo”which was discovered in a tortoise s back shell of Zhougong temple,has never been seen before.

Abstract:The conquest of the Shang Dynasty at Anyang around 1046 BCE by the Zhou is one of the major events for not only Chinese Bronze Age but also early interaction between the pastoralist groups from the Eurasian Steppes and agriculture ones in the Central Plains of China. It is well-known from historical texts that the pre-Zhou people lived in the ancient Bin region (豳), the exact location of which is unclear, but most likely in the Jing River valley. At some point the leader Gugong Danfu (古公亶父) moved from Bin to the capital Qi (Zhouyuan), which preceded the Zhou invasion of Anyang. We have produced a new high resolution radiocarbon chronology for Zaolinhetan, a small settlement in the pre-Zhou heartland. This shows not only an exceptionally long chronological span for the site, but also a different phasing compared to the traditional pottery typology, which raises new questions regarding the regional variation of pottery typologies. Intriguingly, the analysis also reveals a rapid abandonment of Zaolinhetan around 1100 BCE, at the same time many larger sites, such as Zhouyuan, which later became the capital of the Western Zhou dynasty, were significantly expanding. We argue that the drastic decline of Zaolinhetan as revealed by the substantial number of radiocarbon dates and probably also the movement of pre-Zhou political center from Bin to Qin, was part of bigger picture that involved a range of social and environmental factors.

Abstract:Supported by systematic description on late archaeological remains,this article re-examines the dates of early tomb robber's pits in the royal tombs at Yinxu and believes that these pits date to the mid-Western Zhou to the Han Dynasty and are later than the "heaps","pits",and graves of the "Xiaotun culture".The author also gives further evidence to the hypothesis that "certain remains from the last phase of the fourth stage of Yinxu culture - though they may still belong to the Shang culture-date to the early Western Zhou period".Some relics from human activities left after Zhou Gong's second eastern expedition in these royal tombs are similar to artifacts from the fourth stage of Yinxu culture, but they should date to the Western Zhou.

Abstract:It is commonly agreed in the academia that almost all the oracle bone inscriptions of Lizu group unearthed from the Yin Ruins were made on the Bovine Scapula.In spite of a few cases given by someone trying to prove the inscriptions of Lizu group to have ever been made on oracle bones,yet none of them are reasonably and academically agreed on.They are judged as the fake products,or mistaken for oracle bones or incorrectly sorted by character style.This thesis studies 'He' 20994 as the only piece of identified tortoise shell inscription of Lizu group by far.This case is of great significance for general research of the uses of oracle bones with inscriptions of Lizu group and the usual practice as well.

Abstract:27 bronze objects of the Western Zhou were unearthed in early 2003 in Mei County, Shaanxi. Each object was cast with epigraphic characters, recording Chan Lai and familial history. Both the characters and the topics covered were rare in years. The Lai-tripods of the years of 42 and 43 are complete with chronological records by the year and by the month, " lunar phases" , and the chronological records of the Ten Celestial Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches. Thus the Lai-ware constitutes one of the most significant discoveries since the Xia-Shang-Zhou Division Project was initiated, and can serve as a test for or a challenge to the initial findings of the Project. The complete lineage of Western Zhou kings as recorded on the Lai-plates has never been seen in other Western Zhou relics. Lai-ware will play an important role in Xia-Shang-Zhou studies.

Abstract:Abstract From June to August 2008, a joint archaeological team excavated a mural tomb at Shuiquanliang Village in Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province. The tomb is situated about 1.5km west of the village. In the tomb, grave goods such as pottery figurines, pottery models and glazed ceramic vessels as well as many well-preserved murals were found. The tomb structure, murals, and tomb furnishings suggest that the tomb was built in the late Northern Qi Dynasty; the occupant of the tomb may have been the military commander of Shuozhou City. This excavation is very important for the study of the history and culture of Shuozhou area in the Northern Qi Dynasty.

Abstract:The expression‘bing-ji'appears often in oracle bone inscriptions,and the author's research leads him to conclude that it means‘holding ji',the term for twigs of the sour date plant, and that it refers to the practice of shamans holding branches of this plant to ward off malign ghosts.The term thus has long continuity,and inscriptions containing the term provide us with insight into Yin Dynasty shamanic culture.

Abstract:Although the lid of the newly unearthed bronze article known as Qin Zi gui is partly missing, most of the inscription inside it is preserved and this forms the final section of a longer passage. We know from the inscription that its owner was named Qin Zi. The decoration on the handle of the lid is very similar to that on a lacquer casket unearthed from tomb number M2 at the cemetery of the Qin state’s ruling nobility at Dapuzishan in Lixian county, Gansu province. Setting this inscription in the context of those on other contemporary pieces such as the Qin Zi zhong (bell) and the Qin Zi ge (dagger-axe), we can see that Qin Zi was active in the early period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, and it is very possible that Qin Zi was Duke Jing, the heir apparent or son of Duke Wen of Qin, amd that he died two years before his father. This interpretation would provide previously unavailable information regarding the identity of the occupant of the large tomb at Dapuzishan.

Abstract:This review considers the book of the American sinologist A. Schwartz “The Oracle Bone Inscriptions from Huayuanzhuang East. Translated with an Introduction and Commentary” was published in 2019. The book is a commented translation and study of inscriptions on divination bones (turtle shields and bull shoulder blades) from the eastern sector of Huayuanzhuang in Yinxu (Anyang, Henan). This epigraphic monument dates back to the turn of the 13th–12th centuries BC and currently represents the most complete and interesting corpus of divinatory inscriptions. Despite the fact that the inscriptions under consideration cover a relatively short period of time, they contain many details, which, as if piece by piece, form the general picture of Shan reality. It is noteworthy that the customer of these divinations was not the Shang ruler, but a figure from his inner circle — Zi, who was presumably the son of the wang. After a thorough analysis of the inscriptions, A. Schwartz offers a reconstruction of various aspects of the daily activities, rituals, and life of the elite of the Shan society — the wang, his reigning wife, the prince, and the persons who are in their subordination. The basis of A. Schwartz’s research is a complete translation of divinatory inscriptions into English, so this review focuses on the problems of interpreting the most important terms found in divinatory inscriptions from the Eastern Huayuanzhuang Sector.

Abstract:This chapter presents an evaluation of Zhou ritual from the standpoint of modern archaeological evidence and excavated texts. While there is some continuity with the definition of Zhou ritual in transmitted texts, the differences with and gaps in the transmitted records are striking. The chapter explores rites and mortuary practices in detail, and it presents several examples of Western Zhou bronze inscriptions related to ancient rituals and practices for conferring political power and for ancestor worship. The chapter analyzes several inscriptions providing examples of early ceremonies and also discusses the sixty-day ritual calendar that governed ritual life during this period. The use of ritual to preserve the past led to the rise of literature and history in ancient China.

Abstract:Based on reviewing the discovery of Early Qin Culture , this article discusses some recent re-search ,espcially from the view of archeology ,focusing on three subects :the origin of Qin clan ,the Tomb features of Early Qin Culture and the relationship between the Early Qin Culture and others .In conclu-sion ,as far as the unique burial rites and the combination of burial accessories reflect ,the Early Qin cul-ture has formed and developed by constantly absorbing and merging culture of Shang in the east ,Dongyi , Zhou in the west and Xirong ,which reveals the culture evolution is characterized by the interaction be-tween east and west in the Guangzhong Area and Center Plain since the Three Ancient Chinese Dynasties-Xia ,Shang and Zhou .

Abstract:The bodies and glazes of 27 early Western Zhou proto‐porcelain samples from Yejiashan cemetery, Hubei Province, were analysed using LA‐ICP–AES, SEM, XRD, a thermal expansion instrument and other analytical methods. The results indicated that the bodies of all samples were characterized by high silicon and low aluminium, and were made with porcelain stone raw materials found in the south of China. The glazes are typical of high‐temperature calcium glazes of the CaO (MgO) – K2O (Na2O) – Al2O3 – SiO2 series, with relatively high Mn and P content, which was probably caused by the addition of plant ashes. The physical properties and phase compositions of Yejiashan proto‐porcelain show that firing processes were still in the early stages of development in ancient China. Multivariate statistical analyses indicated that Yejiashan proto‐porcelain might have come from the Deqing area, in Zhejiang Province. These results provide new archaeological evidence for research on issues related to material flow in the Western Zhou dynasty.
