Abstract:Flexible optical sensors have been an emerging paradigm for applications in robotics,healthcare,and human-machine interfaces due to their high sensitivity,fast response,and anti-electromagnetic interference.Recently,Marques reports a bioinspired multifunctional flexible optical sensor(BioMFOS),achieving a forces sensitivity of 13.28 μN,and a spatial res-olution of 0.02 mm.The BioMFOS has a small dimension(around 2 cm)and a light weight(0.8 g),making it suitable for wearable application and clothing integration.As proof-of-concept demonstrations,monitoring of finger position,trunk movements,and respiration rate are realized,implying their prominent applications in remote healthcare,intelligent ro-bots,assistance devices teleoperation,and human-machine interfaces.
A High‐Resolution Thin‐Film Fingerprint Sensor Using a Printed Organic Photodetector

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted much attention in recent years, due to their promise in large‐area light sensing applications. Here, high‐resolution slot‐die‐coated large‐area bulk heterojunction organic photodiode (OPD) arrays are reported. The OPD uses a novel electron transport layer, indium gallium zinc oxide in combination with a molybdenum oxide top‐electrode. Together, these effectively reduce dark current densities to very low levels of ≈10−7 mA cm−2 at −2 V. The OPDs show linear behavior in a wide range of light intensities and high detectivity values under reverse bias conditions. When coated on a 508 ppi TFT backplane, a high‐quality optical fingerprint scanner capable of imaging in reflection is realized. The optical and electrical properties of the fingerprint sensor are characterized and high‐resolution fingerprint images are obtained.

Abstract:Many applications tend to allow automated login by storing passwords/cookies on the smartphone. As an alternative, recently there have been efforts to fingerprint devices for identification and authentication [2]. Towards that end, we explore whether it is possible to fingerprint a smartphone using its built-in hardware sensors such as accelerometers. Smartphone accelerometers are based on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems whose structure introduces subtle idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing process. Moreover accelerometer chips use Quad Flat Non-leaded or Land Grid Array packaging, another source of imperfections [1]. We propose SensorPrint to leverage such imperfections of sensors.

Abstract:Traditional fingerprint recognition systems are vulnerable to attacks, such as the use of artificial fingerprints, and poor performance will be achieved if the captured surface fingerprints are of low-quality. Developing high-security and robust fingerprint recognition systems is of increasing concern in modern society. The introduction of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for fingerprint imaging opens up a new research domain for fingerprint recognition due to its ability to capture the depth information of skin layers. This paper proposes a fingerprint recognition system based on OCT. The research first establishes a database with normal, worn-out, artificial and degraded fingerprints imaged by our custom-built, in-house OCT device. Then, we propose to reconstruct three layers of subsurface fingerprints by considering diverse skin layer information. For each of the subsurface fingerprints divided according to the physical structure of the fingertip, we propose a simple yet effective projection-based reconstruction method. Finally, a pixel-level fusion strategy based on the local image quality is proposed to the fuse the three levels of subsurface fingerprints for robust fingerprint recognition. In our experiments, we show that as much diverse fingerprint information can be retained as possible by the proposed subsurface fingerprint reconstruction method. We also demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method by comparing it with existing state-of-the-art internal fingerprint reconstruction approaches. The robustness and high anti-spoofing ability of the proposed system is verified by comparing the matching performance evaluated on the established OCT-based database and another database with the same fingerprints imaged by a commercial optical sensor. The best EER and FMR100 evaluated on OCT-based fingerprints are 0.42% and 0.36%, respectively. The best EER and FMR100 evaluated on traditional 2D surface fingerprints are 8.05% and 18.18%, respectively, which shows the vast potential of the proposed system in current automated fingerprint recognition systems (AFRSs).

Abstract:Fingerprints are the best form of personal identification for criminal investigation purposes. We present a line-scanning Raman imaging system and use it to detect fingerprints composed of β-carotene and fish oil on different substrates. Although the line-scanning Raman system has been used to map the distribution of materials such as polystyrene spheres and minerals within geological samples, this is the first time to our knowledge that the method is used in imaging fingerprints. Two Raman peaks of β-carotene (501.2, 510.3 nm) are detected and the results demonstrate that both peaks can generate excellent images with little difference between them. The system operates at a spectra resolution of about 0.4 nm and can detect β-carotene signals in petroleum ether solution with the limit of detection of 3.4×10(-9) mol/L. The results show that the line-scanning Raman imaging spectroscopy we have built has a high accuracy and can be used in the detection of latent fingerprints in the future.

Abstract:We show a thin, flexible and large 500 dpi fingerprint sensor for security applications providing better usability than existing sensors with a similar performance. A new process flow, using PVDF-TrFE pyroelectric capacitors on top of an IGZO TFT backplane on a flexible polyimide (PI) foil is implemented to create an active thermal fingerprint sensor. The system measurements fit well with the simulation of the thermal operation.

Abstract:An in‐screen ultra‐thin optical waveguide fingerprint sensing technology was demonstrated as an example of glass photonics (vs silicon photonics). It can be seamlessly integrated with OLED displays of phone devices or any other transparent surfaces for large area (or even full screen) in‐screen fingerprint sensing. Due to its unique optical designs with sensors facing the opposite side of the cover glasses, the fingerprint sensors can measure undistorted images with very high resistance to ambient light. The theory of optical designs and the system architecture of sensors are explained. A 1.1 inch sensor arrays were fabricated and integrated to OLED displays and transparent surfaces to verify the performances of the new fingerprint sensing technologies. It shows that the proposed system can successfully acquire the fingerprint images under 100,000Lux ambient light intensity.

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution imaging technology probing the internal structure of multilayered tissues. Since it provides subsurface fingerprint information that is identical to the surface texture but unaffected by any surface defects, OCT-based fingerprints open up a new domain for establishing robust and high-security automatic fingerprint identification systems (AFISs). However, the development of OCT-based fingerprint recognition is hindered by the lack of public OCT-based fingerprint database for algorithm analysis and testing. This article, for the first time, established an OCT-based fingerprint database with thousands of fingers using our custom-built acquisition device. The website of this data set is https://github.com/CV-SZU/. Moreover, the images included in the database were selected after quality evaluation based on image resolution, image size, effective measured area, and the number of extractable features. Finally, case studies, including antispoofing, multiple subsurface fingerprint reconstruction, and fingerprint verification, were discussed based on the developed database. The database can serve as a benchmark for developing effective antispoofing, live detection, and high-accurate fingerprint recognition algorithms. It will significantly promote the research in the area of fingerprint biometric and will also advance the development of commercial products.

Abstract:This paper theoretically and experimentally analyzes the influence of different sensor array schemes and optical collimation structures on fingerprint recognition. Considering the process yield, cost and the quality of fingerprint image, we find the appropriate size ranges of microlenses and sensors are 20~30 μm and 35~50 μm respectively, and the bonding process between the optical collimating film and the sensor substrate has little damage to the sensor, which is conducive to mass production.

Abstract:Images recorded below the surface of a finger can have more details and be of higher quality than the conventional surface fingerprint images. This is particularly true when the quality of the surface fingerprints is compromised by, for example, moisture or surface damage. However, there is an unmet need for an inexpensive fingerprint sensor that is able to acquire high-quality images deep below the surface in short time. To this end, we report on a cost-effective full-field optical coherent tomography system comprised of a silicon camera and a powerful near-infrared LED light source. The system, for example, is able to record 1.7 cm×1.7 cmen face images in 0.12 s with the spatial sampling rate of 2116 dots per inch and the sensitivity of 93 dB. We show that the system can be used to image internal fingerprints and sweat ducts with good contrast. Finally, to demonstrate its biometric performance, we acquired subsurface fingerprint images from 240 individual fingers and estimated the equal-error-rate to be ∼0.8%. The developed instrument could also be used in other en face deep-tissue imaging applications because of its high sensitivity, such as in vivo skin imaging.

Abstract:We developed a large area and low cost optical fingerprint recognition product based on LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) process. A high efficient a‐Si pin sensor is introduced, the quantum efficiency under white light is 70% and the dark state current density is E‐10 A / mm2. The “one‐to‐one” and “one to multiple” structures of sensor and micro lens are compared, and the “one‐to‐one” optical path structure is systematically analyzed and evaluated. The optical path focal length is about 100 μm. The fingerprint recognition effect is significantly improved by adding a BM shading layer, and this scheme can effectively avoid the screen burning problem caused by the high luminous intensity of pixels in the fingerprint unlocking area.

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT), as a non-destructive and high-resolution in vivo imaging technology, has been adapted in fingertip biometric acquisition. It measures on and beneath skin fingertip information as 3D volume data, containing the internal fingerprint, sweat pores and glands, which are robust against poor external skin conditions and resistant to forgery attacks. After introducing the basic principle and system representatives of OCT technology, recent progresses over past decades in the field of fingertip biometrics, especially in biometric identification and deception attack detection, are reviewed and summarized in this paper. Technical limitations and prospects are discussed subsequently. This paper intends to provide systematic references for the design and improvement of OCT system and support the researchers for their works on fingertip biometrics.

Abstract:Fingerprint recognition is a widely used biometric authentication method in LED-backlight smartphones. Due to the increasing demand for full-screen smartphones, under-display fingerprint recognition has become a popular trend. In this paper, we propose a design of an optical fingerprint recognition lens for under-display smartphones. The lens is composed of three plastic aspheric lenses, with an effective focal length (EFL) of 0.61 mm, a field of view (FOV) of 126°, and a total track length (TTL) of 2.54 mm. The image quality of the lens meets the target specifications, with MTF over 80% in the center FOV and over 70% in the 0.7 FOV, distortion less than 8% at an image height of 1.0 mm, and relative illumination (RI) greater than 25% at an image height of 1.0 mm. The lens also meets the current industry standards in terms of tolerance sensitivity and Monte Carlo analysis.

Abstract:We present the design and manufacturing of high-fidelity universal 3D fingerprint targets, which can be imaged on a variety of fingerprint sensing technologies, namely, capacitive, contact optical, and contactless optical. Universal 3D fingerprint targets enable, for the first time, not only a repeatable and controlled evaluation of fingerprint readers but also the ability to conduct fingerprint reader interoperability studies. Fingerprint reader interoperability refers to how robust fingerprint recognition systems are to variations in the images acquired by different types of fingerprint readers. To build universal 3D fingerprint targets, we adopt a molding and casting framework consisting of: 1) digital mapping of fingerprint images to a negative mold; 2) CAD modeling a scaffolding system to hold the negative mold; 3) fabricating the mold and scaffolding system with a high resolution 3D printer; 4) producing or mixing a material with similar electrical, optical, and mechanical properties to that of the human finger; and 5) fabricating a 3D fingerprint target using controlled casting. Our experiments conducted with personal identity verification and Appendix F certified optical (contact and contactless) and capacitive fingerprint readers demonstrate the usefulness of universal 3D fingerprint targets for controlled and repeatable fingerprint reader evaluations and also fingerprint reader interoperability studies.

Abstract:We open source fingerprint Match in Box, a complete end-to-end fingerprint recognition system embedded within a 4 inch cube. Match in Box stands in contrast to a typical bulky and expensive proprietary fingerprint recognition system which requires sending a fingerprint image to an external host for processing and subsequent spoof detection and matching. In particular, Match in Box is a first of a kind, portable, low-cost, and easy-to-assemble fingerprint reader with an enrollment database embedded within the reader’s memory and fingerprint spoof detector, feature extractor, and matcher all running on the reader’s internal vision processing unit (VPU). An onboard touch screen and rechargeable battery pack make this device extremely portable and ideal for applying both fingerprint authentication (1:1 comparison) and fingerprint identification (1:N search) to applications (vaccination tracking, food and benefit distribution programs, human trafficking prevention) in rural communities, especially in developing countries. We also show that Match in Box is suited for capturing neonate fingerprints due to its high resolution (1900 ppi) cameras.

Abstract:The finger skin of human plays a key role in amplifying and transferring tactile signals to sensory receptors, and it provides design guidelines for next‐generation flexible tactile sensors. To enable robotic applications such as dexterous manipulation and tactile feedback, the functions of force sensing and slip detection are crucial for flexible tactile sensors. Here, a finger‐skin inspired flexible optical (FIFO) sensor based on optical microfiber is reported, and this sensor has fingerprint‐like surface with parallel ridges and resin/polydimethylsiloxane multilayer structure with different stiffness, mimicking the structural characteristics of human finger skin. With these design features, the sensor is capable of measuring force with high durability and detecting slip with high sensitivity and short response time. Time‐resolved response curve and its wavelet transform provide useful information related to grasping and slipping when the sensor is in contact with objects with different shapes and materials. As a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, the sensor directly attached onto a robotic gripper is capable of measuring grasping force and monitoring object slippage during manipulation tasks, indicating its potential applications in advanced robotics.

Abstract:Multimodal biometric sensing and processing systems can significantly improve the success rate of identification and authentication compared to traditional unimodal biometric authentication techniques. We propose a flexible micro-nano fiber (MNF) multimodal sensor for fingerprint recognition. We used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the sensor substrate and placed the MNF in s-shape on the PDMS. The surface of the PDMS is covered with a film with a thickness of only 2 to package the MNF. A ridge-shaped sensing area is formed on the sensor surface. Such structure protects the MNF from damage at the same time. It also greatly preserves the sensitivity of the MNF. This method realizes the simultaneous measurement of the fingerprint signal and the touch dynamics signal. We tested the stability of the sensors when measuring friction and pressure as well as temperature changes. We performed the recognition of 400 sets of fingerprint signals with an accuracy of 95.75%. Such method has great potential for applications in communication, computing, commercial purposes, and financial transactions.

Abstract:The detection of latent fingerprints plays a crucial role in criminal investigations andbiometrics. However, conventional techniques are limited by their lack of depth-resolved imaging,extensive area coverage, and autonomous fingerprint detection capabilities. This study introducesan object-driven optical coherence tomography (OD-OCT) to achieve rapid, autonomous andultra-large-area detection of latent fingerprints. First, by utilizing sparse sampling with therobotic arm along the slow axis, we continuously acquire B-scans across large, variably shapedareas (similar to 400 cm2), achieving a scanning speed up to 100 times faster. In parallel, a deep learningmodel autonomously processes the real-time stream of B-scans, detecting fingerprints and theirlocations. The system then performs high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of these detectedareas, exclusively visualizing the latent fingerprints. This approach significantly enhances theimaging efficiency while balancing the traditional OCT system's trade-offs between scanningrange, speed, and lateral resolution, thus offering a breakthrough in rapid, large-area objectdetection.

Abstract:Six novel conjugated polymers based on benzo[1,2‐d:4,5‐d']bis(oxazole) were synthesized through alkyl chain engineering. Among them, POTB1 exhibited the most promising static and dynamic properties in organic photodetectors (OPDs). These OPDs were successfully integrated into active electrode‐patterned organic thin‐film transistors (OTFTs), resulting in the acquisition of a clear fingerprint image as a digital signal. Various novel conjugated polymers (CPs) have been developed for organic photodetectors (OPDs), but their application to practical image sensors such as X‐ray, R/G/B, and fingerprint sensors is rare. In this article, we report the entire process from the synthesis and molecular engineering of novel CPs to the development of OPDs and fingerprint image sensors. We synthesized six benzo[1,2‐d:4,5‐d']bis(oxazole) (BBO)‐based CPs by modifying the alkyl side chains of the CPs. Several relationships between the molecular structure and the OPD performance were revealed, and increasing the number of linear octyl side chains on the conjugated backbone was the best way to improve Jph and reduce Jd in the OPDs. The optimized CP demonstrated promising OPD performance with a responsivity (R) of 0.22 A/W, specific detectivity (D*) of 1.05 × 1013 Jones at a bias of −1 V, rising/falling response time of 2.9/6.9 μs, and cut‐off frequency (f‐3dB) of 134 kHz under collimated 530 nm LED irradiation. Finally, a fingerprint image sensor was fabricated by stacking the POTB1‐based OPD layer on the organic thin‐film transistors (318 ppi). The image contrast caused by the valleys and ridges in the fingerprints was obtained as a digital signal.
