Abstract:Decarbonisation of the economy has become a priority at the global level, and the resulting legislative pressure is pushing the chemical and energy industries away from fossil fuels. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) has emerged as a promising technology to promote this transition, which will further benefit from the decreasing cost of renewable energy. However, several technological challenges need to be addressed before the MES technology can reach its maturity. The aim of this review is to critically discuss the bottlenecks hampering the industrial adoption of MES, considering the whole production process (from the CO2 source to the marketable products), and indicate future directions. A flexible stack design, with flat or tubular MES modules and direct CO2 supply, is required for site-specific decentralised applications. The experience gained for scaling-up electrochemical cells (e.g. electrolysers) can serve as a guideline for realising pilot MES stacks to be technologically and economically evaluated in industrially relevant conditions. Maximising CO2 abatement rate by targeting high-rate production of acetate can promote adoption of MES technology in the short term. However, the development of a replicable and robust strategy for production and in-line extraction of higher-value products (e.g. caproic acid and hexanol) at the cathode, and meaningful exploitation of the currently overlooked anodic reactions, can further boost MES cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the use of energy storage and smart electronics can alleviate the fluctuations of renewable energy supply. Despite the unresolved challenges, the flexible MES technology can be applied to decarbonise flue gas from different sources, to upgrade industrial and wastewater treatment plants, and to produce a wide array of green and sustainable chemicals. The combination of these benefits can support the industrial adoption of MES over competing technologies.
Research on electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 by microorganisms with a graphene modified carbon felt

Abstract:At present, reduction of CO2 to organics with microbial electrosynthesis (MES) has been a popular research direction in environmental fields. One key factor that governs electron exchange is the electrode material. This study evaluated the effect of graphene as electrode modification materials on organics production from CO2 in microbial electrosynthesis with a mixed-culture biocathode. The Cathode potential was set to −0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl), When the cathode material changed from a non-modified carbon felt electrode to the graphene modified carbon felt, the density of current of MES was increased from 1.4 ± 0.1 A·m−2 to 2.6 ± 0.1 A·m−2, the density of current has increased by 85.7%, and acetate accumulation increased from 142 mg/L to 262 mg/L, butyrate accumulation increased from 45.8 mg/L to 84.8 mg/L. The total electron recovery of MES more than 90%. The results of SEM analysis showed that compared with non-modified carbon felt, the amorphous shape of graphene makes graphene-modified carbon felt exhibit a three-dimensional structure, which gave the electrode surface a larger specific surface area and enrich more microorganisms and a large number of graphene/bacteria composites shaped on the graphene modified electrode surface, which indicated that the graphene had good biocompatibility. The results of the cyclic voltammetry curve show that the MES of the graphene modified electrode has better electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Microbial electrocatalysis reckons on microbes as catalysts for reactions occurring at electrodes. Microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells are well-known in this context; both prefer the oxidation of organic and inorganic matter for producing electricity. Notably, the synthesis of high energy-density chemicals (fuels) or their precursors by microorganisms using bio-cathode to yield electrical energy is called Microbial Electrosynthesis (MES), giving an exceptionally appealing novel way for producing beneficial products from electricity and wastewater. This review accentuates the concept, importance and opportunities of MES, as an emerging discipline at the nexus of microbiology and electrochemistry. Production of organic compounds from MES is considered as an effective technique for the generation of various beneficial reduced end-products (like acetate and butyrate) as well as in reducing the load of CO2 from the atmosphere to mitigate the harmful effect of greenhouse gases in global warming. Although MES is still an emerging technology, this method is not thoroughly known. The authors have focused on MES, as it is the next transformative, viable alternative technology to decrease the repercussions of surplus carbon dioxide in the environment along with conserving energy.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging technology that enables the synthesis of value-added chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) or inorganic carbon compounds by coupling renewable electricity to microbial metabolism. However, MES still faces challenges in achieving high production of value-added chemicals due to the limited extracellular electron transfer efficiency at the biotic-abiotic interfaces. To overcome this bottleneck, it is crucial to develop novel cathodes and modified materials. This review systematically summarizes recent advancements in cathode materials in the field of electrocatalyst-assisted and photocatalyst-assisted MES. The effects of various material types are further investigated by comparing metal-free and metal materials and photocatalyst materials of different semiconductor types. Additionally, the review introduces the maximum production rate of value-added chemicals and conversion efficiency achieved by these cathode materials while highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of different material types. To the best of our knowledge, in electrocatalyst-assisted systems, the maximum CH4 yield on graphene aerogel/polypyrrole cathode achieved 1,672 mmol m-2 d-1, and the maximum Faraday efficiency (FE) of CH4 reached up to 97.5% on graphite plate. Meanwhile, the maximum acetate yield achieved 1,330 g m-2 d-1 with CO2 conversion efficiency into acetate close to 100% on carbon nanotube cathodes. In photocatalyst-assisted systems, the maximum acetate yield could reach 0.51 g L-1 d-1 with the coulombic efficiency of 96% on the MnFe2O4/g-C3N4 photocathode. Finally, prospects for future development and practical applications of MES are discussed, offering theoretical guidance for the fabrication of cathode materials that can improve production efficiency and reduce energy input.
Carbon dioxide reduction by mixed and pure cultures in microbial electrosynthesis using an assembly of graphite felt and stainless steel as a cathode

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to multi-carbon compounds at the cathode using chemolithoautotrophs is an emerging application of microbial electrosynthesis (MES). In this study, CO2 reduction in MES was investigated at hydrogen evolving potentials, separately by a mixed culture and Clostridium ljungdahlii, using a graphite felt and stainless steel assembly as cathode. The mixed culture reactor produced acetate at the maximum rate of 1.3 mM d(-1), along with methane and hydrogen at -1.1 V/Ag/AgCl. Over 160 days of run-time in four fed-batches, 26% of bicarbonate was converted to acetate between day 28 and 41, whereas in the late batches, methane production prevailed. Out of 45 days of run-time in the C. ljungdahlii reactor, 2.4 mM d(-1) acetate production was achieved at -0.9 V/Ag/AgCl in Batch 1. Simultaneous product degradation occurred when the mixed culture was not selectively enriched. Hydrogen evolution is potentially the rapid way of transferring electrons to the biocatalysts for higher bioproduction rates.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical processes are primary platforms for generating electricity or value-added products by relying on the interaction between electroactive microorganisms and electrodes by utilizing electron carriers like hydrogen and enzyme through the oxidation–reduction reactions. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES), initially introduced as electricity-driven bioproduction from CO2, offered a novel pathway to produce biochemicals that eventually contribute to the CO2 sequestration. While most of the previous reviews concentrate on these microbial electrochemical platforms jointly referred to as MXC, such as Microbial fuel cell and microbial electrolysis cell, MES has grown tremendously in recent years, requiring a severe update on the scientific information on this topic. In this mini-review, the significant achievements in MES, specifically towards the production of a wide array of specialty chemicals, have been addressed by summarizing the recent scientific breakthroughs of the MES technology. Furthermore, improving MES's performance through modification of electrodes and membranes and outlook section with the technical challenges and probable solutions have been discussed. The review summarizes the technological drawbacks of the MES's towards a sustainable commercial platform for industrial commodities production and proposes ways to overcome the existing technical challenges in a nutshell towards turning MES in a full-fledged industrial-scale production platform.

Abstract:The production of biofuels and biochemicals is highly electron intensive. To divert fermentative and respiratory pathways to the product of interest, additional electrons (i.e. reducing power) are often needed. Meanwhile, the past decade has seen the breakthrough of sustainable electricity sources such as solar and wind. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is at the nexus of both, as it uses electrical energy as source of reducing power for microorganisms. This review addresses the key opportunities and challenges for MES. While exciting as a concept, MES needs to overcome many biological, electrochemical, logistical and economic challenges. Particularly the latter is critical, as on a 'per electron basis' MES does not yet appear to deliver a substantial benefit relative to existing approaches.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is an emerging material for energy and environmental applications, but it has been primarily produced using chemical processes involving high energy consumption and hazardous chemicals. In this study, we reported a new bioelectrochemical method to produce GO from graphite under ambient conditions without chemical amendments, value-added organic compounds and high rate H2 were also produced. Compared with abiotic electrochemical electrolysis control, the microbial assisted graphite oxidation produced high rate of graphite oxide and graphene oxide (BEGO) sheets, CO2 and current at lower applied voltage. The resultant electrons are transferred to a biocathode, where H2 and organic compounds are produced by microbial reduction of protons and CO2, respectively, a process known as microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Pseudomonas is the dominant population on the anode, while abundant anaerobic solvent-producing bacteria Clostridium carboxidivorans is likely responsible for electrosynthesis on the cathode. Oxygen production through water electrolysis was not detected on the anode due to the presence of facultative and aerobic bacteria as O2 sinkers. This new method provides a sustainable route for producing graphene materials and renewable H2 at low cost and it may stimulate a new area of research in MES.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 can include renewable surplus electricity storage and CO2 utilisation. This review focuses on the microbial CO2 electrobiorefinery based on microbial electrosynthesis (MES) which merges electrochemical and microbial conversion to produce biofuels and higher-value chemicals. In this review, recent developments are discussed about bioelectrochemical conversion of CO2 into biofuels and chemicals in MES via microbial CO2-fixation and electricity utilisation reactions. In addition, this review examines technical approaches to overcome the current limitations of MES including the following: engineering of the biocathode, application of electron mediators, and reactor optimisation, among others. An in-depth discussion of strategies for the CO2 electrobiorefinery is presented, including the integration of the biocathode with inorganic catalysts, screening of novel electroactive microorganisms, and metabolic engineering to improve target productivity from CO2.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging electrochemical technology currently being researched as a CO2 sequestration method to address climate change. MES can convert CO2 from pollution or waste materials into various carbon compounds with low energy requirements using electrogenic microbes as biocatalysts. However, the critical component in this technology, the cathode, still needs to perform more effectively than other conventional CO2 reduction methods because of poor selectivity, complex metabolism pathways of microbes, and high material cost. These characteristics lead to the weak interactions of microbes and cathode electrocatalytic activities. These approaches range from cathode modification using conventional engineering approaches to new fabrication methods. Aside from cathode development, the operating procedure also plays a critical function and strategy to optimize electrosynthesis production in reducing operating costs, such as hybridization and integration of MES. If this technology could be realized, it would offer a new way to utilize excess CO2 from industries and generate profitable commodities in the future to replace fossil fuel-derived products. In recent years, several potential approaches have been tested and studied to boost the capabilities of CO2-reducing bio-cathodes regarding surface morphology, current density, and biocompatibility, which would be further elaborated. This compilation aims to showcase that the achievements of MES have significantly improved and the future direction this is going with some recommendations. Abstract:The present energy demand of the world is increasing but the fossil fuels are gradually depleting. As a result, the need for alternative fuels and energy sources is growing. Fuel cells could be one alternative to address the challenge. The fuel cell can convert CO 2 to value-added chemicals. The potential of bio-fuel cells, specifically enzymatic fuel cells and microbial fuel cells, and the importance of immobilization technology in bio-fuel cells are highlighted. The review paper also includes a detailed explanation of the microbial electrosynthesis system to reduce CO 2 and the value-added products during microbial electrosynthesis. Future research in bio-electrochemical synthesis for CO 2 conversion is expected to prioritize enhancing biocatalyst efficiency, refining reactor design, exploring novel electrode materials, understanding microbial interactions, integrating renewable energy sources, and investigating electrochemical processes for carbon capture and selective CO 2 reduction. The challenges and perspectives of bio-electrochemical systems in the application of CO 2 conversion are also discussed. Overall, this review paper provides valuable insights into the latest developments and criteria for effective research and implementation in bio-fuel cells, immobilization technology, and microbial electro-synthesis systems.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging and promising technology for converting CO 2 into valuable organic compounds (e.g., methane, acetate, and alcohols). Though several advancements have been achieved over the last decade, the productivity and energy efficiency of MES still need to be improved to enhance its commercialization prospect. The reactor design is one of the crucial factors determining the performance and the up-scaling potential of MES technology. Here, we first present a brief overview of the conventional and advanced reactor designs and configurations reported for MES. Then, we summarize five key strategies that can be implemented to enhance the performance of MES reactors. Finally, we provide some suggestions and perspectives on the future development of MES reactors. The performance of MES could be increased by improving the chemicals production rates and decreasing the electricity consumption with the advanced reactor configuration.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis for CO2 utilization (MESCU) producing valuable chemicals with high energy density has garnered attention due to its long-term stability and high coulombic efficiency. The data-driven approaches offer a promising avenue by leveraging existing data to uncover the underlying patterns. This comprehensive review firstly uncovered the potentials of utilizing data-driven approaches to enhance high-value conversion of CO2 via MESCU. Firstly, critical challenges of MESCU advancing have been identified, including reactor configuration, cathode design, and microbial analysis. Subsequently, the potential of data-driven approaches to tackle the corresponding challenges, encompassing the identification of pivotal parameters governing reactor setup and cathode design, alongside the decipheration of omics data derived from microbial communities, have been discussed. Correspondingly, the future direction of data-driven approaches in assisting the application of MESCU has been addressed. This review offers guidance and theoretical support for future data-driven applications to accelerate MESCU research and potential industrialization.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) employs microbial catalysts and electrochemistry to enhance CO2 bioconversion to organics with concurrent waste biorefining capability. The aim of this review is to comprehensively discuss the current state of the art and prospects of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production in MES from CO2 and waste organics. Fundamental mechanisms and development of MCFAs production via conventional fermentation are introduced as well. Studies on MCFAs production in MES are summarized, highlighting the strategy of multiple-electron donors (EDs). Challenges for MCFAs production in MES from CO2 are presented, and the primary discussions included methanogenesis inhibition, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) limitations of acetogens, and production of limited EDs via solventogenesis. Possible applications of electrochemical approaches to promote the bioconversion of actual waste materials with MCFAs production are analyzed. Finally, future directions are explored, including multi-stage reactions, substrate supply, product extraction, and microbial pathways.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is capable of converting CO2 to CH4 using microorganisms as biocatalysts, but its performance is significantly restrained by the inherent weakness of naturally-grown biofilms, especially the low biomass loading on biocathodes. Here, we report a top-down biosynthetic approach to fabricate hybridized biofilms on biocathodes, and significantly enhance the methane production. In particular, microbes are captured and artificially loaded on the biocathode with the presence of graphene oxide (GO) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The aggregate of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Fe3O4 and microbes brought in an initial high loading of microbes through magnetic assembling, resulting in a thick and dense biofilm on the rGO/Fe3O4 scaffold. The biocathode achieved an unprecedented CH4-producting rate of 605 ± 119 mmol/m2/d at −0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which increased by 14.5-fold compared to the carbon cloth biocathode. This approach provides new opportunities for the development of high-performance electrochemically-active biofilms for MES, as well as other bioelectrochemical systems.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising technology platform for the production of chemicals and fuels from CO2 and external conducting materials (i.e., electrodes). In this system, electroactive microorganisms, called electrotrophs, serve as biocatalysts for cathodic reaction. While several CO2-fixing microorganisms can reduce CO2 to a variety of organic compounds by utilizing electricity as reducing energy, direct extracellular electron uptake is indispensable to achieve highly energy-efficient reaction. In the work reported here, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a CO2-fixing chemoautotroph and a potential electroactive bacterium, was adopted to perform a cathodic CO2 reduction reaction via MES. To promote direct electron uptake, the graphite felt cathode was modified with a combination of chitosan and carbodiimide compound. Robust biofilm formation promoted by amide functionality between R. sphaeroides and a graphite felt cathode showed significantly higher faradaic efficiency (98.0%) for coulomb to biomass and succinic acid production than those of the bare (34%) and chitosan-modified graphite cathode (77.8%), respectively. The results suggest that cathode modification using a chitosan/carbodiimide composite may facilitate electron utilization by improving direct contact between an electrode and R. sphaeroides.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 and organic waste can combine renewable surplus electricity storage, CO2 utilization, and organic waste management. This review emphasizes the microbial electrochemical platform that merges electrochemical conversion and microbial conversion for the production of fuels and chemicals. In addition, this review examines methods to overcome limitations by the design of advanced reactor concepts, bioconversion with metabolic engineering, multiple-step catalysis, and anodic electro-oxidation reactions, among others. An in-depth discussion of trends is presented, including the interfacing of the classic carboxylate, syngas, and sugar platforms with microbial electrochemical technology. A critical assessment of microbial electrochemical biogas upgrading is also provided. Criticisms and perspectives related to electrobiorefineries and electro-fermentation for organic waste valorization are critically reviewed. The microbial electrochemical platform for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals is a recent application; thus, a number of concerns have yet to be resolved. Among the aspects to address are the increase in carbon fixation rate, production of highly valuable chemicals, response of physiological metabolism, and long-term assessment of scaled-up bioreactors. Insights into these factors may further increase the economic efficiency and sustainability of the technology.
Efficient production of medium chain fatty acids in microbial electrosynthesis with simultaneous bio-utilization of carbon dioxide and ethanol

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising technology for chemicals production driven by renewable energy. However, how the medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production in MES is affected by the method of chain elongation is not clear, and no direct evidence is provided yet for a simultaneous bio-utilization of CO2 and ethanol. In this study, different methods of chain elongation in MES reactors were investigated. During in-situ chain elongation, a maximum caproate concentration of 11.9 ± 0.6 g L−1 was achieved, while the C6 specificity (56.4% ± 0.5%) was much lower than that of ex-situ chain elongation (78.7% ± 1.5%). Carbon distribution and reduction degree balance indicated a simultaneous bio-utilization of CO2 and ethanol, and it was validated by the isotope tracer technique. MCFAs-forming microbes, acetogens, and electrochemically active microorganisms were enriched. This study provides fundamental insights relevant to the carbon and electron fluxes driven by electricity.

Abstract:Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of employing a fluidized electrode with CO2 and electricity as the energy source for generating microbial biomass and carboxylic acids. Planktonic cell biomass was produced under continuous culture at values as high as ca. 0.7 g L−1 dry weight. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) constitutes a bioelectrochemical process where bacteria uptake electrons extracellularly from a polarized electrode to incorporate them into their anabolic metabolism. However, the efficiency of current MES reactor designs can be lower than expected due to limitations regarding electron transfer and mass transport. One of the most promising bioreactor configurations to overcome these bottlenecks is the Microbial Electrochemical Fluidized Bed Reactor (ME‐FBR). In this study, microbial CO2 fixation is investigated for the first time in a ME‐FBR operated as a 3‐phase reactor (solid–liquid–gas). An electroconductive carbon bed, acting as a working electrode, was fluidized with gas and polarized at different potentials (−0.6, −0.8 and −1 V vs. Ag/AgCl) so it could act as an electron donor (biocathode). Under these potentials, CO2 fixation and electron transfer were evaluated. Autotrophic electroactive microorganisms from anaerobic wastewater were enriched in a ME‐FBR in the presence of 2‐bromoethanosulfonic acid (BES) to inhibit the growth of methanogens. Cyclic voltammetry analysis revealed interaction between the microorganisms and the cathode. Furthermore, volatile fatty acids like propionate, formate and acetate were detected in the culture supernatant. Acetate production had a maximum rate of ca. 1 g L−1 day−1. Planktonic cell biomass was produced under continuous culture at values as high as ca. 0.7 g L−1 dry weight. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of employing a fluidized electrode with gaseous substrates and electricity as the energy source for generating biomass and carboxylic acids.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) has gained great interest as an alternative green technology for bioenergy generation along with reduced sludge production, nutrient recovery, removal of COD and color, etc. during wastewater treatment. However, the MFC has several challenges for real-time applications due to less power output and high ohmic resistance and fabrication (electrode and membrane) cost. Several kinds of research have been carried out to increase energy production by reducing various losses associated with electrodes in the MFC. Though, carbonaceous electrodes (carbon and graphite) are the key materials for the anode and cathode side, since these have a higher surface area, good biocompatibility, low cost, and good mechanical strength. Graphene or graphene oxide-based nanocomposite can be an ideal substitute for electrode modifications and an alternative for an expensive anode and cathode catalyst in MFC. Graphene oxide synthesis from waste material such as waste biomass, agricultural, plastic waste, etc. is added advantages of minimizing the cost of the electrodes. But, the synthesis of graphene is quite expensive and has limitations in economic feasibility for bioelectricity production in MFC. Hence, the present review deals with the anode and cathode electrode modification with graphene-based nanocomposites, synthesis of graphene/graphene oxide from various raw materials, and its application in MFC. The current challenges and future outlook on graphene-based composites on MFC performance are also discussed.
