Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 and organic waste can combine renewable surplus electricity storage, CO2 utilization, and organic waste management. This review emphasizes the microbial electrochemical platform that merges electrochemical conversion and microbial conversion for the production of fuels and chemicals. In addition, this review examines methods to overcome limitations by the design of advanced reactor concepts, bioconversion with metabolic engineering, multiple-step catalysis, and anodic electro-oxidation reactions, among others. An in-depth discussion of trends is presented, including the interfacing of the classic carboxylate, syngas, and sugar platforms with microbial electrochemical technology. A critical assessment of microbial electrochemical biogas upgrading is also provided. Criticisms and perspectives related to electrobiorefineries and electro-fermentation for organic waste valorization are critically reviewed. The microbial electrochemical platform for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals is a recent application; thus, a number of concerns have yet to be resolved. Among the aspects to address are the increase in carbon fixation rate, production of highly valuable chemicals, response of physiological metabolism, and long-term assessment of scaled-up bioreactors. Insights into these factors may further increase the economic efficiency and sustainability of the technology.

Abstract:The sensitivity of Scenedesmus subspicatus against potassium dichromate is positively correlated to the photon flux density during the algal growth inhibition test. Low photon flux densities led to significantly reduced maximum effects and higher EC50 levels. To improve the testing of colored substances, we distinguished between the toxic effect (chemical part, represented by potassium dichromate) and the shading effect (physical part, simulated by reduced light intensities during the test) of a hypothetical light absorbing substance. The contribution of these single effects to the total inhibition varied greatly. At high concentrations of potassium dichromate (1.6 and 3.2 mg L(-1)) the physical part never exceeded 25% of the total inhibition, not even at strongest light reduction, while at low concentrations (0.2 and 0.4 mg L(-1)) the physical effect became more prominent when halving the amount of available light. Further, the combination effect of the chemical and the physical effect could be calculated well only by using the concept of independent action. Thus, if chemical and physical effects are measured in combination, as is the case in tests with dye-stuffs, the current test protocol for the algal growth inhibition test may lead to incorrect estimations of the toxic potential.

Abstract:The present energy demand of the world is increasing but the fossil fuels are gradually depleting. As a result, the need for alternative fuels and energy sources is growing. Fuel cells could be one alternative to address the challenge. The fuel cell can convert CO 2 to value-added chemicals. The potential of bio-fuel cells, specifically enzymatic fuel cells and microbial fuel cells, and the importance of immobilization technology in bio-fuel cells are highlighted. The review paper also includes a detailed explanation of the microbial electrosynthesis system to reduce CO 2 and the value-added products during microbial electrosynthesis. Future research in bio-electrochemical synthesis for CO 2 conversion is expected to prioritize enhancing biocatalyst efficiency, refining reactor design, exploring novel electrode materials, understanding microbial interactions, integrating renewable energy sources, and investigating electrochemical processes for carbon capture and selective CO 2 reduction. The challenges and perspectives of bio-electrochemical systems in the application of CO 2 conversion are also discussed. Overall, this review paper provides valuable insights into the latest developments and criteria for effective research and implementation in bio-fuel cells, immobilization technology, and microbial electro-synthesis systems.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical processes are primary platforms for generating electricity or value-added products by relying on the interaction between electroactive microorganisms and electrodes by utilizing electron carriers like hydrogen and enzyme through the oxidation–reduction reactions. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES), initially introduced as electricity-driven bioproduction from CO2, offered a novel pathway to produce biochemicals that eventually contribute to the CO2 sequestration. While most of the previous reviews concentrate on these microbial electrochemical platforms jointly referred to as MXC, such as Microbial fuel cell and microbial electrolysis cell, MES has grown tremendously in recent years, requiring a severe update on the scientific information on this topic. In this mini-review, the significant achievements in MES, specifically towards the production of a wide array of specialty chemicals, have been addressed by summarizing the recent scientific breakthroughs of the MES technology. Furthermore, improving MES's performance through modification of electrodes and membranes and outlook section with the technical challenges and probable solutions have been discussed. The review summarizes the technological drawbacks of the MES's towards a sustainable commercial platform for industrial commodities production and proposes ways to overcome the existing technical challenges in a nutshell towards turning MES in a full-fledged industrial-scale production platform.

Abstract:Microbial electrocatalysis reckons on microbes as catalysts for reactions occurring at electrodes. Microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells are well-known in this context; both prefer the oxidation of organic and inorganic matter for producing electricity. Notably, the synthesis of high energy-density chemicals (fuels) or their precursors by microorganisms using bio-cathode to yield electrical energy is called Microbial Electrosynthesis (MES), giving an exceptionally appealing novel way for producing beneficial products from electricity and wastewater. This review accentuates the concept, importance and opportunities of MES, as an emerging discipline at the nexus of microbiology and electrochemistry. Production of organic compounds from MES is considered as an effective technique for the generation of various beneficial reduced end-products (like acetate and butyrate) as well as in reducing the load of CO2 from the atmosphere to mitigate the harmful effect of greenhouse gases in global warming. Although MES is still an emerging technology, this method is not thoroughly known. The authors have focused on MES, as it is the next transformative, viable alternative technology to decrease the repercussions of surplus carbon dioxide in the environment along with conserving energy.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging electrochemical technology currently being researched as a CO2 sequestration method to address climate change. MES can convert CO2 from pollution or waste materials into various carbon compounds with low energy requirements using electrogenic microbes as biocatalysts. However, the critical component in this technology, the cathode, still needs to perform more effectively than other conventional CO2 reduction methods because of poor selectivity, complex metabolism pathways of microbes, and high material cost. These characteristics lead to the weak interactions of microbes and cathode electrocatalytic activities. These approaches range from cathode modification using conventional engineering approaches to new fabrication methods. Aside from cathode development, the operating procedure also plays a critical function and strategy to optimize electrosynthesis production in reducing operating costs, such as hybridization and integration of MES. If this technology could be realized, it would offer a new way to utilize excess CO2 from industries and generate profitable commodities in the future to replace fossil fuel-derived products. In recent years, several potential approaches have been tested and studied to boost the capabilities of CO2-reducing bio-cathodes regarding surface morphology, current density, and biocompatibility, which would be further elaborated. This compilation aims to showcase that the achievements of MES have significantly improved and the future direction this is going with some recommendations. Abstract:The presence of hyaluronate in the capsular space of the cat muscle spindle was demonstrated using alcian blue staining at various pHs, the critical electrolyte concentration technique and hyaluronidase treatment. In spindles with intact capsules an extracellular marker, the dye Ruthenium Red, gained access to the capsular space through the gap in the sleeve region, but for a limited distance. In muscle spindles with the capsule nicked, the marker diffused into the capsular space in the equatorial region, revealing a dense network in this space which consisted of globular structures interconnected by thin filaments. Based on their thickness, these filaments were inferred to be hyaluronic acid, and the globular structures were inferred to be protein molecules. Longitudinal diffusion of the dye into the capsular space through the nicked site was limited. The limited diffusion is probably due to electrostatic binding of the dye, which is a hexavalent cation, to negatively charged glycosaminoglycan hyaluronate that is present in the space. The transcapsular potential was measured by use of glass micropipettes filled with 3 M‐KCl. The value was 15 mV +/‐ 4 (average +/‐ S.D., n = 12; range, 10‐20 mV) inside negative. The input resistance and capacitance of the capsule, measured with two independent electrodes, varied widely (1.3‐8.0 M omega and 0.5‐1.3 nF, n = 4) and the capsule showed marked delayed rectification to outward current pulses. [K+] in the space measured with K+‐sensitive resin‐filled glass micropipettes was a few millimolar higher than that in the bathing solution. The effects of [K+] and [Ca2+] on impulse activities were examined in spindles with intact capsules or with partially resected capsules. In spindles with intact capsules the effects of [K+] and [Ca2+] were significantly less or negligible compared with those in spindles with the capsule opened. Hyaluronidase (approximately 10(‐4) g/ml) added to the bathing solution around nicked capsules significantly reduced both resting and stretch‐induced impulse activities in 40‐50 min. By this time the capsular space was completely collapsed. An increase in [K+] of the bathing solution from 3.5 to 6 or 8 mM restored these impulse activities. A similar restoring effect was also observed when [Ca2+] in the bathing solution was reduced.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:In the last decade, poor intestinal absorption of candidate drugs intended for oral administration has been identified as a major bottleneck in drug development. Poor intestinal absorption can often be related to poor aqueous solubility and/or poor permeability across the intestinal wall. Other factors, such as poor stability and the metabolism of the compounds, can also decrease the amount of compound absorbed. In an effort to design compounds with enhanced absorption profile, theoretical predictions of solubility and permeability, among other factors, have gained increased interest, and a large number of papers have been published. In this review, the databases and techniques used for the development of in silico absorption models will be discussed. The focus is on aqueous drug solubility, which has become a major problem in drug development.

Abstract:Carbon-rich waste materials (solid, liquid, or gaseous) are largely considered to be a burden on society due to the large capital and energy costs for their treatment and disposal. However, solid and liquid organic wastes have inherent energy and value, and similar as waste CO2 gas they can be reused to produce value-added chemicals and materials. There has been a paradigm shift towards developing a closed loop, biorefinery approach for the valorization of these wastes into value-added products, and such an approach enables a more carbon-efficient and circular economy. This review quantitatively analyzes the state-of-the-art of the emerging microbial electrochemical technology (MET) platform and provides critical perspectives on research advancement and technology development. The review offers side-by-side comparison between microbial electrosynthesis (MES) and electro-fermentation (EF) processes in terms of principles, key performance metrics, data analysis, and microorganisms. The study also summarizes all the processes and products that have been developed using MES and EF to date for organic waste and CO2 valorization. It finally identifies the technological and economic potentials and challenges on future system development.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) employs microbial catalysts and electrochemistry to enhance CO2 bioconversion to organics with concurrent waste biorefining capability. The aim of this review is to comprehensively discuss the current state of the art and prospects of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production in MES from CO2 and waste organics. Fundamental mechanisms and development of MCFAs production via conventional fermentation are introduced as well. Studies on MCFAs production in MES are summarized, highlighting the strategy of multiple-electron donors (EDs). Challenges for MCFAs production in MES from CO2 are presented, and the primary discussions included methanogenesis inhibition, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) limitations of acetogens, and production of limited EDs via solventogenesis. Possible applications of electrochemical approaches to promote the bioconversion of actual waste materials with MCFAs production are analyzed. Finally, future directions are explored, including multi-stage reactions, substrate supply, product extraction, and microbial pathways.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, which are further exacerbated by the environmental impact of external chemical additions. In response, microbial electrochemical wastewater refining has gained prominence at the interdisciplinary frontier of wastewater resource recovery and green bio-manufacturing. Significant progress has been made in utilizing active electrodes to stimulate CO2 fixation rates, applying “binary electron donors” to produce high-value-added chemicals, and developing novel processes and equipment. This review explores various aspects of microbial electrochemical wastewater refining, including microbial electrochemical monitoring of water quality, chemical synthesis from diverse carbon sources, and the deployment of pilot-scale systems for generating electricity, hydrogen, and methane, as well as for in-situ remediation. Additionally, it discusses the challenges and future directions, highlighting the importance of understanding mechanisms, advancing electrocatalyst and microbial engineering, and innovating hybrid processes. In conclusion, the widespread adoption of microbial electrochemical wastewater refining is emphasized for resource recovery and sustainable chemical production, ultimately reducing environmental impact.
Microbial Electrosynthesis from CO reaches Productivity of Syngas and Chain Elongation Fermentations

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis allows the electrochemical upgrading of CO . However, higher productivities and energy efficiencies are needed to reach a viability that can make the technology transformative. Here we show how a biofilm-based microbial porous cathode in a directed flow-through electrochemical system can continuously reduce CO to even-chain C2-C6 carboxylic acids during 248 days. We demonstrate a 3-fold higher biofilm concentration, volumetric current density, and productivity than the state of the art, up to a new record of -35 kA m and 69 kg m day , at 60-97% and 30-35% faradaic and energy efficiencies, respectively. Most notably, the volumetric productivity resembles those achieved in lab-scale and industrial syngas (CO-H -CO ) fermentation and chain elongation fermentation. This work highlights key design parameters for efficient electricity-driven microbial CO reduction. There is need and room to improve the rates of electrode colonization and microbe-specific kinetics to scale-up the technology.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging and promising technology for converting CO 2 into valuable organic compounds (e.g., methane, acetate, and alcohols). Though several advancements have been achieved over the last decade, the productivity and energy efficiency of MES still need to be improved to enhance its commercialization prospect. The reactor design is one of the crucial factors determining the performance and the up-scaling potential of MES technology. Here, we first present a brief overview of the conventional and advanced reactor designs and configurations reported for MES. Then, we summarize five key strategies that can be implemented to enhance the performance of MES reactors. Finally, we provide some suggestions and perspectives on the future development of MES reactors. The performance of MES could be increased by improving the chemicals production rates and decreasing the electricity consumption with the advanced reactor configuration.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are an important environmental issue that causes greenhouse and climate change effects on the earth. Nowadays, CO2 has various conversion methods to be a potential carbon resource, such as photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photo-electrocatalytic. CO2 conversion into value-added products has many advantages, including facile control of the reaction rate by adjusting the applied voltage and minimal environmental pollution. The development of efficient electrocatalysts and improving their viability with appropriate reactor designs is essential for the commercialization of this environmentally friendly method. In addition, microbial electrosynthesis which utilizes an electroactive bio-film electrode as a catalyst can be considered as another option to reduce CO2. This review highlights the methods which can contribute to the increase in efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) processes through electrode structure with the introduction of various electrolytes such as ionic liquid, sulfate, and bicarbonate electrolytes, with the control of pH and with the control of the operating pressure and temperature of the electrolyzer. It also presents the research status, a fundamental understanding of carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanisms, the development of electrochemical CO2R technologies, and challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical approach is an emerging technology for biogas upgrading through carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction and biomethane (or value-added products) production. There is limited literature critically reviewing the latest scientific developments on the bioelectrochemical system (BES) based biogas upgrading technologies, including CO2 reduction efficiency, methane (CH4) yields, reactor operating conditions, and electrode materials tested in the BES reactor. This review analyzes the reported performance and identifies crucial parameters considered for future optimization, which is currently missing. Further, the performances of BES approach of biogas upgrading under various operating settings in particular fed-batch, continuous mode in connection to the microbial dynamics and cathode materials have been thoroughly scrutinized and discussed. Additionally, other versatile application options associated with BES based biogas upgrading, such as resource recovery, are presented. Three-dimensional electrode materials have shown superior performance in supplying the electrons for the reduction of CO2 to CH4. Most of the studies on the biogas upgrading process conclude hydrogen (H2) mediated electron transfer mechanism in BES biogas upgrading.

This rapidly evolving field has seen great improvements both technically and biologically, but this interdisciplinarity sometimes hampers overseeing strategies to increase process efficiency. In this review, we summarize and discuss research on improvements at the biofilm‐electrode interface distinguishing between biotic and abiotic approaches. Microbial electrochemical systems (MESs) are a highly versatile platform technology with a particular focus on power or energy production. Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an emerging technology that enables the synthesis of value-added chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) or inorganic carbon compounds by coupling renewable electricity to microbial metabolism. However, MES still faces challenges in achieving high production of value-added chemicals due to the limited extracellular electron transfer efficiency at the biotic-abiotic interfaces. To overcome this bottleneck, it is crucial to develop novel cathodes and modified materials. This review systematically summarizes recent advancements in cathode materials in the field of electrocatalyst-assisted and photocatalyst-assisted MES. The effects of various material types are further investigated by comparing metal-free and metal materials and photocatalyst materials of different semiconductor types. Additionally, the review introduces the maximum production rate of value-added chemicals and conversion efficiency achieved by these cathode materials while highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of different material types. To the best of our knowledge, in electrocatalyst-assisted systems, the maximum CH4 yield on graphene aerogel/polypyrrole cathode achieved 1,672 mmol m-2 d-1, and the maximum Faraday efficiency (FE) of CH4 reached up to 97.5% on graphite plate. Meanwhile, the maximum acetate yield achieved 1,330 g m-2 d-1 with CO2 conversion efficiency into acetate close to 100% on carbon nanotube cathodes. In photocatalyst-assisted systems, the maximum acetate yield could reach 0.51 g L-1 d-1 with the coulombic efficiency of 96% on the MnFe2O4/g-C3N4 photocathode. Finally, prospects for future development and practical applications of MES are discussed, offering theoretical guidance for the fabrication of cathode materials that can improve production efficiency and reduce energy input.
Enhancing microbial CO2 electrocatalysis for multicarbon reduction in a wet amine‐based catholyte

Abstract:Microbial CO2 electroreduction (mCO2ER) offers a promising approach for producing high‐value multicarbon reductants from CO2 by combining CO2 fixing microorganisms with conducting materials (i.e., cathodes). However, the solubility and availability of CO2 in an aqueous electrolyte pose significant limitations in this system. This study demonstrates the efficient production of long‐chain multicarbon reductants, specifically carotenoids (~C40), within a wet amine‐based catholyte medium during mCO2ER. Optimizing the concentration of the biocompatible CO2 absorbent, monoethanolamine (MEA), led to enhanced CO2 fixation in the electroautotroph bacteria. Molecular biological analyses revealed that MEA in the catholyte medium redirected the carbon flux towards carotenoid biosynthesis during mCO2ER. The faradaic efficiency of mCO2ER with MEA for carotenoid production was 4.5‐fold higher than that of the control condition. These results suggest the mass transport bottleneck in bioelectrochemical systems could be effectively addressed by MEA‐assissted mCO2ER, enabling highly efficient production of valuable products from CO2.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis for CO2 utilization (MESCU) producing valuable chemicals with high energy density has garnered attention due to its long-term stability and high coulombic efficiency. The data-driven approaches offer a promising avenue by leveraging existing data to uncover the underlying patterns. This comprehensive review firstly uncovered the potentials of utilizing data-driven approaches to enhance high-value conversion of CO2 via MESCU. Firstly, critical challenges of MESCU advancing have been identified, including reactor configuration, cathode design, and microbial analysis. Subsequently, the potential of data-driven approaches to tackle the corresponding challenges, encompassing the identification of pivotal parameters governing reactor setup and cathode design, alongside the decipheration of omics data derived from microbial communities, have been discussed. Correspondingly, the future direction of data-driven approaches in assisting the application of MESCU has been addressed. This review offers guidance and theoretical support for future data-driven applications to accelerate MESCU research and potential industrialization.
