Abstract:Solecki has shown that a broad natural class of $G_{\delta}$ ideals of compact sets can be represented through the ideal of nowhere dense subsets of a closed subset of the hyperspace of compact sets. In this note we show that the closed subset in this representation can be taken to be closed upwards.

Abstract:In this article we continue the investigation of generalized version of Arbault sets, that was initiated in \cite{DGT} but look at the picture from the most general point of view where ideals come into play. While Arbault sets can be naturally associated with the Frechet ideal $Fin$, in \cite{DGT} it was observed that when $Fin$ is replaced by the natural density ideal $\mathcal{I}_d$ one can obtain a strictly larger class of trigonometric thin sets containing Arbault sets. From the set theoretic point of view a natural question arises as whether one can broaden the picture and specify a class of ideals (instead of a single ideal) each of which would have the similar effect. As a natural candidate, we focus on a special class of ideals, namely, non-$snt$ ideals ($snt$ stands for ``strongly non translation invariant") which properly contains the class of translation invariant ideals ($\varsupsetneq Fin$) and happens to contain ideals generated by simple density functions as also certain non-negative regular summability matrices (but not all) which can be seen from \cite{DG6}. We consider the resulting class of $\mathcal{I}$-Arbault sets and it is observed that for each such ideal, the class of $\mathcal{I}$-Arbault sets not only properly contains the class of classical Arbault sets \cite{Ar} but also a large subfamily of $\mathbf{N}$-sets (also called ``sets of absolute convergence") \cite{Ft} while being contained in the class of weak Dirichlet sets. %In particular it properly contains the family of $\mathbf{N}_0$-sets which have been extensively used in the literature (see \cite{Ar, Ka, Ko}). Though distinct from the class of $\mathbf{N}$-sets, this happens to be a new class strictly lying between the class of Arbault sets and the class of weak Dirichlet sets.

Abstract:We investigate a coarse version of a $2(n+1)$-point inequality characterizing metric spaces of combinatorial dimension at most $n$ due to Dress. This condition, experimentally called $(n,\delta)$-hyperbolicity, reduces to Gromov's quadruple definition of $\delta$-hyperbolicity in case $n = 1$. The $l_\infty$-product of $n$ $\delta$-hyperbolic spaces is $(n,\delta)$-hyperbolic. Every $(n,\delta)$-hyperbolic metric space, without any further assumptions, possesses a slim $(n+1)$-simplex property analogous to the slimness of quasi-geodesic triangles in Gromov hyperbolic spaces. In connection with recent work in geometric group theory, we show that every Helly group and every hierarchically hyperbolic group of (asymptotic) rank $n$ acts geometrically on some $(n,\delta)$-hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the large-scale geometry of topological groups, we investigate particular families of subsets of topological groups named group ideals. We compare different group ideals in the realm of locally compact groups. In particular, we show that a subset of a locally compact abelian group is relatively compact if and only if it is coarsely bounded. Using this result, we prove that an infinite-dimensional Banach space cannot be embedded into any product of locally compact groups.

Abstract:Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers into the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. At the open problem session of the Workshop ``Densities and their application'', held at St. Étienne in July 2013, G. Grekos asked a question whether there is a ``nice'' abstract upper density, whose the family of null sets is precisely a given ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, where ``nice'' would mean the properties of the familiar densities consider in number theory. In 2018, M. Di Nasso and R. Jin (Acta Arith. 185 (2018), no. 4) showed that the answer is positive for the summable ideals (for instance, the family of finite sets and the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge) when ``nice'' density means translation invariant and rich density (i.e. density which is onto the unit interval). In this paper we extend their result to all ideals with the Baire property.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a notion of universal sets for ideals. We show that there exist universal sets of minimal Borel complexity for classic ideals like null subsets of $2^\omega$ and meager subsets of any Polish space, and demonstrate that the existence of such sets is helpful in establishing some facts about the real line in generic extensions. We also construct universal sets for $\mathcal{E}$ - the $\sigma$-ideal generated by closed null subsets of $2^\omega$, and for some ideals connected with forcing notions: $\mathcal{K}_\sigma$ subsets of $\omega^{\omega}$ and the Laver ideal. We also consider Fubini products of ideals and show that there are $\Sigma^0_3$ universal sets for $\mathcal{N}\otimes\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{M}\otimes\mathcal{N}$.

Abstract:We consider the ideal of nowhere dense sets in the common division topology (Szyszkowska's ideal), and examine some of its basic properties. We also explore the possible inclusions between the studied ideal and Furstenberg's and Rizza's ideals, thus answering open questions posed in a recent article by A. Nowik and P. Szyszkowska [17]. Moreover, we discuss the relationships of the Szyszkowska's ideal with selected well-known ideals playing an important role in number theory and combinatorics.

Abstract:One of the main obstacle to study compactness in topological spaces via ideals was the definition of ideal convergence of subsequences as in the existing literature according to which subsequence of an ideal convergent sequence may fail to be ideal convergent with respect to same ideal. This obstacle has been get removed in this article and notions of I compactness as well as I star compactness of topological spaces have been introduced and studied to some extent. Involvement of I nonthin subsequences in the definition of I and I star compactness make them different from compactness even in metric spaces.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an uncountable Polish space and let $\mathcal{I}$ be an ideal on $\omega$. A point $\eta \in X$ is an $\mathcal{I}$-limit point of a sequence $(x_n)$ taking values in $X$ if there exists a subsequence $(x_{k_n})$ convergent to $\eta$ such that the set of indexes $\{k_n: n \in \omega\}\notin \mathcal{I}$. Denote by $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ the family of subsets $S\subseteq X$ such that $S$ is the set of $\mathcal{I}$-limit points of some sequence taking values in $X$ or $S$ is empty. In this paper, we study the relationships between the topological complexity of ideals $\mathcal{I}$, their combinatorial properties, and the families of sets $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ which can be attained. On the positive side, we provide several purely combinatorial (not dependind on the space $X$) characterizations of ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for the inclusions and the equalities between $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ and the Borel classes $\Pi^0_1$, $\Sigma^0_2$, and $\Pi^0_3$. As a consequence, we prove that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a $\Pi^0_4$ ideal then exactly one of the following cases holds: $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Pi^0_1$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$ (however we do not have an example of a $\Pi^0_4$ ideal with $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$). In addition, we provide an explicit example of a coanalytic ideal $\mathcal{I}$ for which $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$. On the negative side, we show that there are no ideals $\mathcal{I}$ such that $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Pi^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^0_3$. We conclude with several open questions.

Abstract:W * is the category of the title. For G ∈ W * , we have the canonical compact space YG , and Yosida representation G ≤ C ( YG ), thus, for g ∈ G , one has the cozero-set coz( g ) in YG . The ideals at issue in G include the principal ideals and polars, G ( g ) and g ⊥⊥ , respectively, and the W * -kernels of W * -morphisms from G . The "coincidences of types" include these properties of G : (M) Each G ( g ) = g ⊥⊥ ; (Y) Each G ( g ) is a W * -kernel; (CR) Each g ⊥⊥ is a W * -kernel (iff each coz( g ) is regular open). For each of these, we give numerous "rephrasings" and examples, and note that (M) = (Y) ∩ (CR). This paper is a companion to a paper in preparation by the present authors, which includes the present thrust in contexts less restrictive and more algebraic. Here, the focus on W * brings topology to bear, and sharpens the view.

Abstract:A natural class of ideals, almost isometric ideals, of Banach spaces is defined and studied. The motivation for working with this class of subspaces is our observation that they inherit diameter 2 properties and the Daugavet property. Lindenstrauss spaces are known to be the class of Banach spaces that are ideals in every superspace; we show that being an almost isometric ideal in every superspace characterizes the class of Gurariy spaces.

Abstract:We study Egorov ideals, that is ideals on $\omega$ for which the Egorov's theorem for ideal versions of pointwise and uniform convergences holds. We show that a non-pathological $\bf{\Sigma^0_2}$ ideal is Egorov if and only if it is countably generated. In particular, up to isomorphism, there are only three non-pathological $\bf{\Sigma^0_2}$ Egorov ideals. On the other hand, we construct $2^\omega$ pairwise non-isomorphic Borel Egorov ideals. Moreover, we characterize when a product of ideals is Egorov.

Abstract:This article intends to initiate an investigation into the structure of $M$-ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$, where $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ denotes the Banach algebra of all bounded analytic functions on the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$. We introduce the notion of analytic primes and prove that $M$-ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ are analytic primes. From Hilbert function space perspective, we additionally prove that $M$-ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ are dense in the Hardy space. We show that outer functions play a key role in representing singly generated closed ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ that are $M$-ideals. This is also relevant to $M$-ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ that are finitely generated closed ideals in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$. We analyze $p$-sets of $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ and their connection to the Šilov boundary of the maximal ideal space of $H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$. Some of our results apply to the polydisc. In addition to addressing questions regarding $M$-ideals, the results presented in this paper offer some new perspectives on bounded analytic functions.

Notes in the isometric deformations problem in codimension 2

Abstract:We present a discussion about the local isometric rigidity problem in codimension 2 with a concrete example. We show the necessity of extending the notions of genuine and honest rigidity in order to have the transitivity property. In order to do so, we show the necessity of studying the isometric immersions in semi-Euclidean spaces. We show that this extension comes with a natural type of singularity in the inner product.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative version of the classical Tits' alternative for discrete groups acting on packed Gromov-hyperbolic spaces supporting a convex geodesic bicombing. Some geometric consequences, as uniform estimates on systole, diastole, algebraic entropy and critical exponent of the groups, will be presented. Finally we will study the behaviour of these group actions under limits, providing new examples of compact classes of metric spaces.

Was Ulam right? II: Small width and general ideals

Abstract:We continue our study of Sierpinski-type colourings. In contrast to the prequel paper, we focus here on colourings for ideals stratified by their completeness degree. In particular, improving upon Ulam's theorem and its extension by Hajnal, it is proved that if $\kappa$ is a regular uncountable cardinal that is not weakly compact in L, then there is a universal witness for non-weak-saturation of $\kappa$-complete ideals. Specifically, there are $\kappa$-many decompositions of $\kappa$ such that, for every $\kappa$-complete ideal $J$ over $\kappa$, and every $B\in J^+$, one of the decompositions shatters $B$ into $\kappa$-many $J^+$-sets. A second focus here is the feature of narrowness of colourings, one already present in the theorem of Sierpinski. This feature ensures that a colouring suitable for an ideal is also suitable for all superideals possessing the requisite completeness degree. It is proved that unlike successors of regulars, every successor of a singular cardinal admits such a narrow colouring.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

On non-Zariski density of $(D,S)$-integral points in forward orbits and the Subspace Theorem

Abstract:Working over a base number field $\KK$, we study the attractive question of Zariski non-density for $(D,S)$-integral points in $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$ the forward $f$-orbit of a rational point $x \in X(\KK)$. Here, $f \colon X \rightarrow X$ is a regular surjective self-map for $X$ a geometrically irreducible projective variety over $\KK$. Given a non-zero and effective $f$-quasi-polarizable Cartier divisor $D$ on $X$ and defined over $\KK$, our main result gives a sufficient condition, that is formulated in terms of the $f$-dynamics of $D$, for non-Zariski density of certain dynamically defined subsets of $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$. For the case of $(D,S)$-integral points, this result gives a sufficient condition for non-Zariski density of integral points in $\mathrm{O}_f(x)$. Our approach expands on that of Yasufuku, \cite{Yasufuku:2015}, building on earlier work of Silverman \cite{Silverman:1993}. Our main result gives an unconditional form of the main results of loc.~cit.; the key arithmetic input to our main theorem is the Subspace Theorem of Schmidt in the generalized form that has been given by Ru and Vojta in \cite{Ru:Vojta:2016} and expanded upon in \cite{Grieve:points:bounded:degree} and \cite{Grieve:qualitative:subspace}.

Abstract:We generalize Gaeta's Theorem to the family of determinantal schemes. In other words, we show that the schemes defined by minors of a fixed size of a matrix with polynomial entries belong to the same G-biliaison class of a complete intersection whenever they have maximal possible codimension, given the size of the matrix and of the minors that define them.
