Abstract:Socrates' death, as portrayed by Plato, and commonly accepted, is seen as the virtuous choice of a philosopher of death in preference to ignominiously evading an unjust verdict of the jury. Xenophon's portrayal, the only other contemporaneous account, shows Socrates as being tired of life, seeing nothing worthwhile in hanging on to a continuously declining life, and deliberately choosing death. In more recent years I. F. Stone has discussed in depth the political context surrounding the trial of Socrates. In this article I discuss the various personal factors, his awareness of aging, his vision of declining relationships with others, his marriage and family life, the political context of the times, and his disbelief in democracy, at a time when the Athenian democracy had only recently been restored, but was still under threat by the oligarchs; and the influence of his daimon, a personal spirit who spoke to him only when opposing an action he was considering. The sum of these various factors presents a fuller and more complete picture of Socrates' choice of death over life.

Abstract:The Death of Socrates is an important event in the history of Western political philosophy. Plato has written a dialogue called Socratic Apology. There is a puzzle that anyone who has read Apology might have had from time to time. Why did Socrates not take many opportunities to compromise and so to avoid his tragedyWhy did he often challenge Athens, almost intentionally brought his own death There are, however, two ways of interpreting this event.To use Berlin’s famous analogy, one may either think Socrates’ destiny as a hedgehog’s tragedy, or think it a fox’ one. The former interpretation believes that because Socrates is too confident in insisting on an absolutist, simple and transcendent idea of value, his beliefs will be inevitably in violent conflict with the secular values of Athens’ city-state. Because Socrates thought himself fighting for the Truth, the city had to shut up him by death penalty. On the other hand, a fox will have his own kind of tragedy. The stableness of the state is based on the moral seriousness. A fox sophist is someone who is pluralistic, negative, and deconstructive. Socrates is exactly this kind of fox. Fox may be a good characteristic of a scholar, but a society must fend off this ironic spirit if it is going to maintain social solidarity. ″Philosophy″ may have two different meanings. However, the two may all become threats to politics. First, philosophy is often understood as metaphysics.Metaphysics is transcendental, and hence may threat mundane political life.On the other hand, philosophy may be regarded as ″critical spirit″,which means the spirit of fox. Its rule of morality is skeptical of everything, including metaphysics.This philosophy may threat politics more, as moral life is based on faiths. After Delphi Event, Socrates devoted all his energy into this kind of philosophical cause, criticizing other people and himself. There is one point to be stressed. We think that Plato and Socrates are basically of one mind.Plato is, unlike some modern scholars have suggested, someone who has lost his teacher’s critical spirit.If the two are of opposite minds, as those scholars have thought, why did Plato elaborates Socratic philosophy in detail and in a persuasive wayThe arguments for the enemy would lead to the jeopardy of one’s own philosophy. Our study suggests another conclusion.Socrates cannot be confined into either of these patterns.A more plausible possibility is that Socrates is both a fox and a hedgehog. The two mentalities do not conflict in Socrates, but reinforce each other. This leads to his powerful intellectual and moral caliber, and, unfortunately, leads to his death. Fortunately, Plato has realized the significance in this event.His masterful representation of Socrates has made Socratic tragedy an important foundation for the Western history of politics.
The killer of Socrates: Coniine and Related Alkaloids in the Plant Kingdom

Abstract:Coniine, a polyketide-derived alkaloid, is poisonous to humans and animals. It is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, which leads to inhibition of the nervous system, eventually causing death by suffocation in mammals. Coniine's most famous victim is Socrates who was sentenced to death by poison chalice containing poison hemlock in 399 BC. In chemistry, coniine holds two historical records: It is the first alkaloid the chemical structure of which was established (in 1881), and that was chemically synthesized (in 1886). In plants, coniine and twelve closely related alkaloids are known from poison hemlock (Conium maculatum L.), and several Sarracenia and Aloe species. Recent work confirmed its biosynthetic polyketide origin. Biosynthesis commences by carbon backbone formation from butyryl-CoA and two malonyl-CoA building blocks catalyzed by polyketide synthase. A transamination reaction incorporates nitrogen from l-alanine and non-enzymatic cyclization leads to γ-coniceine, the first hemlock alkaloid in the pathway. Ultimately, reduction of γ-coniceine to coniine is facilitated by NADPH-dependent γ-coniceine reductase. Although coniine is notorious for its toxicity, there is no consensus on its ecological roles, especially in the carnivorous pitcher plants where it occurs. Lately there has been renewed interest in coniine's medical uses particularly for pain relief without an addictive side effect.

Abstract:The problem of Socrates is a sharp problem which puzzles Nietzsche all his life. In the center of The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche launches twofold attacks on Socrates, claiming that being the incarnation of "scientific spirit" and rationalism, he has not only murdered Greek tragedy and art, but also brought about great political disaster. Socrates sounds to be the spiritual originator of western "science" and "democracy." However, this image of Socrates differs from that in Plato who presents him as a mature philosopher after his turn to political philosophy. The mature Socrates has not casted art away, but merged poetry with philosophy in an appropriate way. And the knowledge claimed by Socrates is concerned with the most important human affairs, such as the order of the soul, the many and one of virtue, the best regime etc., and with a teleological color, different from what is called "science" or "knowledge" by Nietzsche. Indeed, Nietzsche's political accusation against Socrates is ironically drawing intellectuals' attention to the political and spiritual dilemma of their times. That he takes art superior over truth and proposes his construction of "great politics" is actually somewhat like Socrates to re-legislate for the value and existence of human beings.

Abstract:To examine the sophists and their legacy, it is necessary to reconsider the relation between Socrates and the sophists. The trial of Socrates in 399 BCE seems to have changed people’s attitudes towards and conceptions of the sophists drastically, because Socrates was the first and only “sophist” executed for being a sophist. In the fifth century BCE, people treated natural philosophy, sophistic rhetoric and Socratic dialogue without clear distinctions, often viewing them as dangerous, impious and damaging to society. After the trial of Socrates, however, Plato sharply dissociated Socrates from the sophists and treated his teacher as a model philosopher and the latter as fakes, despite many common features and shared interests between them. While Plato’s distinction was gradually accepted by his contemporaries and by subsequent thinkers through the fourth century BCE, some disciples of Socrates and the second generation of sophists continued to pride themselves on being sophists and philosophers at the same time. Thus, this paper argues that Socrates belonged to the sophistic movement before Plato dissociated him from the other sophists, although the trial of Socrates did not immediately eliminate confusion between the sophist and the philosopher. The reconstructed view of the contemporaries of Socrates and Plato will change our conception of the sophists, as well as of Socrates. Finally, the paper examines the relation of Socrates to Antiphon of Rhamnus. Plato deliberately ignored this Athenian sophist because he was a shadowy double of Socrates in democratic Athens.

Abstract:In this manuscript, I provide some insights into the novel Five Little Pigs (US title: Murder in Retrospect) by Agatha Christie, and overview the neurotoxin coniine that plays an essential role in that story. Coniine is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, and induces a slowly spreading effect of paralysis by acting directly on the peripheral nervous system. This agent has been used as a poison for thousands of years; indeed, the philosophical text Phaedo describes that coniine was used to put Socrates to death. Based on this background, Christie's views on human nature and her creative powers are also discussed.

Abstract:Strychnine-related death has been described since the 19th century. This alkaloid was discovered in 1818. Historically, strychnine was used by the South-East Asian autochthones on their arrows. However, its production was modified by legislation, which was used to protect people against accidental intoxications. Here, we present the case of a 69-year-old man who was found dead at home. During the autopsy, we found a blue substance in the stomach. Toxicological analysis measured strychnine at 0.29 μg/mL in the blood sample, which is a relatively low level in comparison with the results given in the literature. However, histologic examination and toxicological findings permitted the conclusion of strychnine poisoning.

Abstract:Cicero represents the efforts by the Roman philosophers who tried to create their own philosophy by means of re-reading Greek philosophy. The new Roman philosophy exhibits its own originality which differs from the Greek one and is more akin to modern philosophical thinking. Thus more attention should be directed to this much-neglected style of wisdom.In Hellenistic-Roman philosophies, one interesting phenomenon can be observed: many have passed over Plato and Aristotle and traced back to Socrates in order to re-find the ″orthodoxy″ of philosophy. Stoics did that, and so did the Academics. Cicero played his role in this line of Socratic-orthodoxy discovery. When Cicero claimed that Socrates was the first man who turned philosophy from heaven to the city, he was not just describing some ordinary ″philosophical turn″, rather, he was pointing out the real nature of philosophy: to be the reflection on politics and the moral good.The philosophy school that followed this orthodoxy, as Cicero believed, was the Academic philosophers who pursued ″probable truth″ rather than absolute truth.The former was attained through dialectic examination of opinions and thus belonged eventually in the domain of opinion, sufficient, however, to guide life, while the latter was not attainable and useless to life.Probable truth is the truth that has reasonable apology or justification. This wording reminds people of a forensic rhetoric. Actually, rhetoric politics is another part of the new feature of Roman philosophy founded by Cicero. Rhetoric aims at persuasion.Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato criticized rhetoric art fiercely because it did not resort to truth. Plato did have his own art of speaking, namely dialectics. But Cicero emphasized more on the public speech in the court and the senate, for it brought benefits for the commonwealth. Roman republican philosophers believed that philosophy must serve the real reforms in political life, rather than the mere theoretical perfection.The change of focus on probable truth and public rhetoric entails other profound changes in the philosophical thinking. For instance, Cicero re-ordered the Telos in favor of the life-form of practical statesmen, rather than that of speculative philosophers. Meanwhile, he stressed more on the internal relation between natural law and custom, avoiding the idealistic orientation in the justification of moral norms.Cicero’s contribution is significant, for since then both Greek idealistic philosophy and Roman rhetoric philosophy have constituted distinct and coexistent sub-traditions within the Western tradition of political philosophy.

Abstract:Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Angelo Poliziano were two of the most important humanists of the Italian Renaissance. They died suddenly in 1494 and their deaths have been for centuries a subject of debate. The exhumation of their remains offered the opportunity to study the cause of their death through a multidisciplinary research project. Anthropological analyses, together with documentary evidences, radiocarbon dating and ancient DNA analysis supported the identification of the remains attributed to Pico. Macroscopic examination did not reveal paleopathological lesions or signs related to syphilis. Heavy metals analysis, carried out on bones and mummified tissues, showed that in Pico's remains there were potentially lethal levels of arsenic, supporting the philosopher's poisoning theory reported by documentary sources. The arsenic concentrations obtained from analysis of Poliziano's remains, are probably more related to an As chronic exposure or diagenetic processes rather than poisoning.

Abstract:Agatha Christie's detective novel Murder is Easy has the title with the message that the perpetrator of a serial murder in the English countryside was actually an unimaginable individual, and that murder is easy unless it is imagined. In the novel, arsenic is used as a murder tool. Therefore, and this essay aims to educate the readers about the neurological symptoms of arsenic poisoning. In the future, criminal acts using arsenic may appear before us. For reliable diagnosis, it is a major premise to have the basic knowledge written here; simultaneously, this novel shows that flexible thinking that is not bound by common sense is also required.

Abstract:This paper examines Socrates’ theory of the arts in the Gorgias and in the Republic. It shows how that theory changes, as the discussion takes focus first in relation to moderation, then to justice, where it is tied to the idea of a techne of rule, to notions of virtuous work and civic health, and to five levels of ‘art’ represented in the cave. It argues that both Socrates’ vision of a scientific and benevolent political art and Thrasymachus’ sophistic theory of tyrannical rule are undercut in the dialogue, the former by doubts concerning the epistemic closure it seems based on, the latter by the tyrant’s character, which impels him toward self-destructive government.

Abstract:Aconitine is a natural toxic substance belonging to the family of aconitum alkaloids, which is used in small doses by Traditional Chinese practitioners. We present a case of accidental death due to acute aconitine poisoning. A 65-year-old Chinese man presented to a medical clinic with fever and shoulder pain. Soon after administration of intravenous ceftriaxone, a bottle of Chinese medicinal wine was administered. The man rapidly experienced headache, hearing loss and tinnitus, nausea, diarrhea, numbness of the lips, tongue, face, and the upper and lower extremities, cold sweat, fall of blood pressure, and discomfort of the entire body, and he died on the same day. Postmortem examination showed cyanosis of the nail beds, severe congestion in lungs and other organs, bilateral pleural effusions, and infiltration of basophils in the intestinal submucosa. No significant increase of IgE was found in the blood. Toxicological analysis detected aconitine in the medicinal wine, blood, and stomach contents by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS⁄MS). Aconitine was quantified in cardiac blood as 16.4 ng/ml, and in stomach contents (63.8 ng/ml) and wine sample (10.1 ug/ml). The cause of death was aconitine poisoning. This case report highlights the danger of aconitine. LC-MS⁄MS has the advantages of high analytic speed, sensitivity, and accuracy. It would be desirable for the government to control the use of aconitine-containing herbal extracts.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To analyze the characteristics of diphenidol poisoning cases and to provide clues and technical means for the identification of such cases.METHODS:Biological samples of 9 deaths caused by diphenidol poisoning were detected by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and the characteristics of these cases were analyzed retrospectively.RESULTS:Most of the deaths caused by diphenidol poisoning were young females. The dosage was between 60 and 300 tablets, and the mass concentration of diphenidol in the postmortem blood ranged from 0.87 to 99.00 μg/mL. There was no correlation between the dosage and the concentration of diphenidol in the blood.CONCLUSIONS:Diphenidol poisoning has the characteristics of high concealment and lethality. More attention should be paid to suicide cases, and diphenidol should be recommended as a routine detection item to avoid missing detection.

Abstract:Cyanide is notoriously known to the public for more than a century now as a weapon of mass destruction (Zyklon B gas - hydrogen cyanide used by Nazis), an agent for chemical warfare during World War I (hydrogen cyanide) and very infamous "Suicide Pill" used in the past by military and espionage organizations during World War II (potassium cyanide). During the modern industrial era, cyanide poisoning is commonly associated with the industrial exposure and domestic fires. But there is little awareness about potentially fatal consequences of cyanide poisoning from common food sources. Here, we present the case report of a 79-year-old female with acute cyanide poisoning from improperly prepared cassava leaves. Symptoms from ingested toxin may start a few hours after exposure, which include headache, confusion, ataxia, seizures, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flushing, and itching of the skin. Patients may develop hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, renal failure, hepatic necrosis, rhabdomyolysis, and metabolic acidosis; a multisystem manifestation of hypoxia at the cellular level. Multiple treatment strategies are available to treat cyanide poisoning, including sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydroxycobalamine. This is one of the scenarios where a thorough history, awareness of agents causing cyanide toxicity and knowledge of clinical manifestations can help avoid delays in prompt decision-making for appropriate treatment, thus reducing morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospital course.

Abstract:Chinese herbal medicines have been extensively used in China and other countries for centuries. Aconitine, a diterpenoid alkaloid extracted from Aconitum plants, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, but can also induce severe arrhythmia and neurotoxicity. Aconitine poisoning accidents caused by misuse, suicide, or homicide have been reported in recent years. In China, fatal aconitine poisoning can occasionally happen on account of accidental ingestion of some wild plants or consumption of herbal decoction made from the roots of Aconitum plants. However, it is rather difficult for forensic experts to find the specific results in present forensic autopsy of aconitine-induced death. To further clarify its potential risk following the widespread application of aconitine, toxicological characteristics and pharmacokinetics of aconitine are reviewed. Moreover, gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular symptoms were observed frequently in aconitine poisoning cases. In addition, the review also aims at providing some convincing evidences for forensic experts to identify unexplained death with postmortem examination.

Digitalis poisoning: historical and forensic aspects

Abstract:Since the introduction of digitalis into therapy approximately 200 years ago, there have been continuing admonitions concerning its toxicity. Over 400 years ago, herbalists listed the plant as being poisonous. In fiction, the homicidal use of digitalis has appeared in the writings of Mary Webb, Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie. Ten instances in real life of alleged homicide by digitalis and trials of the accused are listed. The drug has been used with suicidal intent rather infrequently, compared with other medications. Possibly, it is more commonly used for such a purpose in France than in England or the United States. The fraudulent use of digitalis in the support of claims for disability because of heart disease has occurred, and one large conspiracy of physicians and lawyers in the swindle of insurance companies during the 1930s is a shameful episode in the record of these professions. Although innocent, one professor of medicine who was involved committed suicide. Two pharmaceutical (manufacturing) blunders that occurred in Belgium and Holland with mislabeling are mentioned. These resulted in numerous deaths and the profession seemed rather slow to recognize the nature of these small epidemics of poisoning. Instances of psychiatric illness with digitalis seem well documented. The story of digitalis toxicity continues into the present and physicians should be vigilant regarding the drug's potential for poisoning that can result from prescribing digitalis with ignorance of proper dosage, pharmacodynamics or drug interactions, as well as from accidental overdose as in children and use with self-destructive or homicidal intent.
