Abstract:The construction of lunar stations for research and habitation requires high-performance building materials that can adapt to the harsh lunar environment. One of the feasible building materials is fiber-reinforced composites, for which the composition of glass fibers can be designed like lunar soils, i.e., terrestrial basalt, and in turn the “lunar glass” can be drawn into fibers. Because of a wide variation of TiO2 in lunar soils, our study focused on a series investigation on the effect of TiO2 (0.55 wt%-6.14 wt%) on fiber spinnability and strength of the simulated “lunar glass and glass fibers”. The baseline glass composition was derived from a simulated TiO2-lean lunar soil and other glasses were made at different TiO2 doping levels. The addition of TiO2 was found to reduce the thermal stability of the melt, there appears a TiO2 threshold (6.14 wt%), at which fibers cannot be drawn without breakage because of melt devitrification. The fiber tensile strength exhibits a nonlinear characteristic with an apparent maximum at 1.52 wt% TiO2. FTIR and Raman spectroscopic studies were carried out to investigate the glass network structure responses to TiO2 modifications and show TiO2 functions as a network modifier, depolymerizing the silicate network. Statistical structure (FTIR & Raman based)–property modeling was attempted to further elucidate the effect of TiO2-induced structure change on Tg and fiber tensile strength. Good agreements were found between the model predictions and the measured values.

Abstract:Thermoelectric and infrared radiation effects are extensively applied in the energy and aerospace sectors; however, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. While numerous studies have been conducted on these effects individually, few have explored their commonalities and intrinsic connections. Thus, investigating the relationship between infrared radiation and thermoelectric performance presents an opportunity for innovative interdisciplinary research. This study focuses on how heat and light influence electrons by examining the relationship between the thermoelectric performance and the infrared radiation properties of rutile Ti1-xNbxO2 (x = 0.01, 0.05, 0.14, 0.20) materials synthesized using a solid-state method. First-principles calculations and doping optimization effectively controlled the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Consequently, the Ti0.8Nb0.2O2 sample exhibited a high power factor and low thermal conductivity, resulting in a ZT value of 0.23. The sample absorbs infrared light in the 8-14 μm range, demonstrating a negative correlation between the ZT value and infrared emissivity. This finding offers a novel perspective on the interrelationship between infrared radiation and thermoelectric properties, providing theoretical guidance for the development of multifunctional materials.

Abstract:The present work explores a magnetron sputtering route to deposit titanium oxide on MgO-ZrO2 plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating at different substrate temperatures for purpose of exploring crystallographic orientation and thermo-optical performance. By employing a Ti target as a sputtering cathode, the effects of the substrate temperature on the composition, lattice orientation, solar absorptance and infrared emittance of the prepared coatings were investigated. The XRD results indicated that the coating was composed of srilankite(S)-TiO2, Mg-Ti-O and Zr-Ti-O composite oxides, as well as Magnéli TinO2n-1 phases belonging to substoichiometric oxides of titanium. Furthermore, lattice and crystal preferable orientation were seen to be influenced by the substrate temperature. The reduction of the solar absorptance after the sputtering process was attributed to the high refractive index of titanium oxides. The infrared emittance was increased first and then decreased with the increase of the substrate temperature. This variation can be theoretically deduced from the lattice vibration theory. This method presents a promising application prospect in satisfying different thermo-optical design requirements of the spacecraft.

Abstract:In the pursuit of developing broadband high emissivity coatings for metallic radiation thermal protection, conventional approaches often involve complex photonic structures or the incorporation of transition metals and rare earth additives, which pose significant technological challenges and environmental concerns. Here, we present a straightforward and eco-friendly surface structuring strategy for creating a high emissivity TiO2 coating on titanium, eliminating the need for environmentally hazardous additives. By controlling surface micropore diameter to similar to 6 um through soft-sparking discharge, we successfully engineered a textured surface that effectively mitigates the intrinsic emissivity dip of planar TiO2 at wavelengths with weak polarization extinction (3-8 mu m) and strong polarization resonance (>12 mu m). Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations highlighted the crucial role of micropores in confining the incident electric field, maximizing the absorption potential of surface phonon polaritons. This improvement yields an impressive emissivity of 0.83 across the thermal infrared spectrum. The coating also demonstrated robust resistance to oxidation and retained its high emissivity at elevated temperatures, presenting a promising solution for sustainability in spacecraft and electronic applications.

Abstract:TiO2 films on the FTO (SnO2:F) coated glass substrates were prepared through spin coating via a sol-gel method. The FTO/TiO2 double-layer composite films were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, and FTIR. The results demonstrate that the best photocatalytic activity of FTO/TiO2 composite films is achieved when TiO2 film thickness is about 210 nm. The water contact angle values of FTO/TiO2 composite films decrease with the increase of the UV irradiation exposure time of the films. FTO/TiO2 composite films have better hydrophilic after UV irradiation. The FTO substrates are protected by TiO2 layer and the composite films still retain a certain low-emission property after heat treatment. When the thickness of TiO2 film is about 210 nm, the composite films have both self-cleaning property and low-emission property.
Effect of TiO2 on the crystallization of mica glass-ceramics

Abstract:The effect of TiO2 on crystallization of mica-containing glass-ceramics was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Only surface crystallization was observed in the TiO2-free glass and no mica crystals formed in its crystallization process. Two distinct crystallization exotherm peaks in DTA curves of the TiO2-containing samples were observed and resolved corresponding to the initial precipitation of MgTi2O5, followed by the formation of KMg3AlSi3O10F2 and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Two glass transition temperatures also appear on the DTA curves of the TiO2-containing glasses and phase separation takes place in these glasses when they are heat-treated at their nucleation temperatures. By using the Kissinger equation, the activation energies for precipitation of MgTi2O5 and KMg3AlSi3O10F2 crystals were evaluated. Their values decreased with the increase of content of TiO2.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to analyze the thermal control performance of the coatings prepared on Ti6Al4V alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) under different electric parameters in zirconate electrolytes. The composition and structure of the coatings were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thickness measurement gauge and roughness measuring instrument, respectively. The infrared emissivity and solar absorptance of the ceramic coatings were evaluated by the UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer and infrared reflectometer. The results show that the coatings have typical porous structure and the main phase composition is KZr2(PO4)3 phase. With the increase of current density, extension of duty ratios and decrease of working frequency, the absorptance (αs) decreases and the emissivity (ε) increases, due to the increase of the real surface area for radiating energy of coating and the thicker coating composed of nonmetallic inhibiting the absorptance of solar energy. Besides, the thermal shock tests and repeated experiments show outstanding thermal stability of coatings and satisfactory reusability of the electrolyte. In general, the coatings have better thermal control performance than the other coatings in the previous reports, and the above results indicate that the coatings prepared in this work have significantly promising industrialization potential in spacecraft field.

Abstract:Single layer, waterborne, transparent heat insulation coatings for use in energy efficient glazing products were prepared, and their optical, thermal, electrical and artificial accelerated weathering properties were systematically investigated. The coatings combine a high transmittance in the visible region, a low transmittance (a high absorptance) in the near infrared region, a low emittance in the far infrared region, low haze and a high transmission of radio waves. While the coatings' spectral and overall transmittances and reflectances decrease with increasing weight content of antimony doped tin oxides (ATO), their near infrared absorption, and consequently their thermal insulation, increases with increasing ATO concentration. The transparent thermal insulation coatings are electrical insulators and thus have a high transmission of radio waves. The transparent thermal insulation coatings possess good artificial accelerated weathering resistance. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of TiO2 on the crystallization of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system glass has been studied by the means of DTA, XRD and SEM. The results have shown that the initial crystalline phase was mu-cordierite without TiO2 in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system glass. When a certain amount of TiO2 was added to the glass, phase separation was found during the heat treatment of the glass. The droplets were enriched with Ti ions and enhanced the formation of initial magnesium aluminotitanite (MAT), which plays as heterogenous nuclei for the primary crystalline phase of alpha-cordierite.

Abstract:This study was designed to evaluate the thermal performance and mechanical properties of coatings with different gradations of TiO2 pigments. The solar reflectance, cooling performance, wash resistance, and film adhesion strength of the coatings were investigated. The influence of TiO2 powder gradation on the final properties of the coatings was studed. The solar reflectance and the thermal insulation were observed to increase with increasing content of nanosized TiO2. The mechanical properties of the coatings, such as their wash resistance and film adhesion strength, were observed to increase with increased incorporation of nanosized TiO2. Such improvements in the properties of the coatings were attributed to the greater specific surface area and lower thermal conductivity of nanosized TiO2 particles compared to normal TiO2 particles.

Abstract:The distortion caused by temperature change in optical materials seriously impacts the accuracy and stability of optical systems, and it is vital to develop a transmission and reflection optical material with ultra-high optical stability. Doping TiO2 in silica glass can greatly reduce the thermal expansion coefficient of silica glass, improve the thermal stability of silica glass, and improve its optical stability. We used SiCl4 and TiCl4 as precursors to prepare glass materials with different titanium contents by CVD process in this work. After the precursors are thoroughly mixed, they enter the high-temperature furnace with a hydrogen-oxygen flame for chemical reactions. The granular SiO2 and TiO2 mixture generated by the reaction is deposited on the bottom of the furnace under gravity and sintered layer by layer to form a transparent glass body. The spectral transmittance and structural characteristics of glasses with different titanium contents were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrophotometer to analyze the spectral transmittance and microstructure characteristics of the materials. The test results show that silica glass doped with 7.5- 10wt% TiO2 has good optical stability, and the transmittance of visible light and near-infrared light is greater than 90%. The doping of TiO2 makes the silica glass network show a specific ‘deaggregation’ phenomenon, but the tetrahedral framework of the silica glass is maintained. In addition to the tetrahedral form of Ti ions in the silica glass network, there is also the six-coordinated octahedral form.

Abstract:As deep space exploration moves farther and farther away, thermal control coating of the in-orbit spacecraft will suffer a serious vacuum-ultraviolet radiation environment, which seriously threatens the reliability of the spacecraft in orbit. Therefore, it is important to improve the vacuum-ultraviolet resistance performance of the thermal control coating. In this work, the inorganic Al2O3–ZnO–Y2O3 thermal control coating was in situ fabricated on a 6061 aluminum alloy surface by PEO technology, and its vacuum-ultraviolet resistance performance was investigated. The results show that the Al2O3–ZnO–Y2O3 thermal control coating has a good resistance performance to vacuum-ultraviolet radiation, which is mainly because the large extinction coefficients of the ZnO and Y2O3 materials in the ultraviolet band are conducive to improving the ultraviolet resistance performance. Furthermore, the life prediction model of the Al2O3–ZnO–Y2O3 thermal control coating shows that its Δαs value first slightly increases and then tends to be stable with the increase of ultraviolet irradiation time from 0 ESH to 25 000 ESH, and the maximum variation of Δαs is about 0.0536. This work provides a material basis and technical support for the thermal control system of spacecraft with long life and high reliability.

Abstract:The cold spray TiO2 thin films were deposited on 5mm-thick float glass substrates using the sol containing nano-anatase TiO2. The effects of different heat treatment temperatures on optical properties were discussed. The properties of xerogel powder were analyzed using TG-DSC, the morphology and structure of TiO2 thin films were characterized by FESEM and XRD, the transmittance and absorption of TiO2 coated glass were investigated by UV-vis spectrophotometer. The results reveal that TiO2 in the film is still anatase phase after heat treatment at 350 degrees C and 500 degrees C. With the annealing temperatures increasing from 20 degrees C to 500 degrees C, the average crystal size increases just from 21.4 nm to 23.9nm, UV absorption of TiO2 coated glass increases from 2.2 to 2.7, visible light transmittance is high to about 80%.

Abstract:TianQin is a proposed space-based gravitational wave detection mission featuring high geocentric orbits. The strain sensitivity goal imposes stringent requirements on thermal control of the key science payloads, which relies heavily on the support of the satellite platforms. A main challenge for TianQin is the yearly varying sunlight directions with respect to the constellation plane. It leads to significant variations in the external heat flow, which is unfavorable for maintaining stable working temperatures inside the satellites over the long term. Based on a flattop sunshield design for the satellites and following passive thermal control guidelines, we propose a combined usage of multiple insulation materials, including polyimide foams and aerogel, at the sunshield and top plate of the satellite to enhance the thermal decoupling. The simulation shows that the temperature variation at the key payload bay can be suppressed within ±0.7 K over three months, which is partly due to the lowered sunshield temperature by employing large areas of optical solar reflectors. Additionally, the design is also effective in damping down the thermal noise from the solar constant fluctuations in the mHz frequency band. Abstract:In order to reduce the effects of solar energy on the instruments and the apparatus in the outer space, two different kinds of ceramic coatings were prepared on Ti6Al4V alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) in zirconate electrolytes. The phase composition, microstructure, thickness, and roughness of coatings were examined by XRD, SEM, EDS, thickness measurement gauge, and roughness measuring instrument, respectively. The infrared emissivity and solar absorbance of the ceramic coatings were studied with the UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer and infrared reflectometer. The results show that ZrO2 coatings are dense and deep gray–green, and mainly composed of m-ZrO2, t-ZrO2. In addition, a small amount of TiO2, ZrTiO4, and the amorphous compound containing P exists in the coating. The intrinsic solar absorbance and emissivity of ZrO2 coatings are 0.92 and 0.76, respectively. The KZr2(PO4)3 coating is rough, thick, and white with the main crystalline of KZr2(PO4)3. The intrinsic solar absorbance and emissivity of the KZr2(PO4)3 coating are 0.62 and 0.91, respectively. For both coatings, the absorbance decreases while the emissivity increases due to an increase in the real surface area of the coatings by increasing thickness and roughness of the coatings as the PEO time progresses. The porous structure of the KZr2(PO4)3 is proved to be ideal for high emissivity and low absorbance materials with the lowest solar absorbance (0.239), the highest infrared emissivity (0.99), and a corresponding balance temperature of the coating of 276K.

Abstract:As space exploration moves further and further into deep space, it is a big challenge to develop antistatic inorganic thermal control coating with lightweight and strong adhesion to substrates. Herein, this work reported an inorganic antistatic AZO/Al2O3-ZnO-Y2O3 composite coating fabricated by PEO combined with ALD methods. The results show that when the Zn/Al ratio of deposited AZO film is 24:1, its overall performance is the optimal, and the emissivity, absorptivity and resistivity are 0.892, 0.409 and 1.15 x 10(-3) Omega.cm, respectively, which can meet thermal control application requirements of spacecraft. Furthermore, the AZO/Al2O3-ZnO-Y2O3 composite coating shows a good electron-resistance irradiation performance, which is because AZO conductive film is easy to generate free carriers, speed up some electron transport and make electrons better disperse and conduct, thus reducing the penetration depth of electron irradiation. This work provides a material basis for thermal control system of spacecraft with long life and high reliability.
Improved oxidation resistance of high emissivity coatings on fibrous ceramic for reusable space system

Abstract:To develop high emissivity coatings on fibrous ceramic substrates with improved thermal resistance for reusable space systems, WSi2-MoSi2-Si-SiB6-borosilicate glass coatings were prepared on fibrous ZrO2 by slurry dipping and subsequent high temperature rapid sintering. A coating with 50 wt% WSi2 and 50 wt% MoSi2 presents optimal thermal stability with only 10.06 mg/cm2 mass loss and 4.0 % emissivity decrease in the wavelength regime of 1.27 to 1.73 microns after 50 h oxidation at 1773 K. The advantages of double phase metal silicide coatings combining WSi2 and MoSi2 include improved thermal compatibility with the substrate and an enhanced glass mediated self healing ability.

Abstract:In order to increase the flexural strength and to adjust the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), TiO2 was introduced into Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS) glass-ceramics to satisfy LTCC applications. The effects of TiO2 addition on the microstructure, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties were studied. The results showed that the crystal phases were composed of Li(2)OAl(2)O(3)7.5SiO(2) (major), as well as TiO2 and CaMgSi2O6 (minor). The crystal phase TiO2 having higher CTE value could appropriately increase the CTE value of LAS to fit the silicon and remarkably improve the flexural strength of LAS glass-ceramic with low CTE. The dielectric and insulating properties also strongly depended on the amount of TiO2. LAS glass-ceramic sintered at 800 A degrees C with high performances was achieved in the case of 1 wt% TiO2: alpha = 2.56 x 10(-6)/A degrees C, sigma = 151 MPa, epsilon = 6.8, tan delta = 1.731 x 10(-3), rho = 8.29 x 10(10) Omega cm.

Effective temperature management technologies (TMTs) are essential to avoid undesirable effects caused by extreme thermal conditions. However, existing high-performance TMTs impose additional burden on the limited mass and power budgets of spacecrafts. Very recently, temperature-adaptive solar coatings (TASCs) and temperature-adaptive radiative coatings (TARCs) emerged as novel light-weight, energy-free temperature-regulation approaches for terrestrial objects with excellent thermal performance. Here, we simulate and present the great potential of TASCs and TARCs as future passive TMTs for space objects. A case study of a geosynchronous satellite with body-mounted solar panels covered by TARC exhibits an interior temperature swing as small as 20.3 degrees C-25.45 degrees C in an orbital period even with solar eclipses. These findings provide insight into the superior performance of TASCs and TARCs in space and will promote their application in extraterrestrial missions.
