Abstract:Quasi-isentropic compression is required for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) to compress the target to a high density and high temperature status, where to match the laser pulse shape and target structure is of great significance to the implosion. However, many parameters for the laser pulse shape and the target structure should be optimized in order to realize such match. In this paper, the drive laser pulse and the target structure are designed using a random optimization method for a direct-drive ICF implosion driven by a 358.40 kJ laser pulse. This method can quickly optimize the laser pulse and target structure parameters for an efficient quasi-isentropic compression of the plasmas, leading to an areal density of 9.30% higher than that given by the hydrodynamic scaling. A correlation matrix is also constructed to analyze the correlation between the parameters. This provides a reference for further optimization and improvement. The method should have potential applications in the target design for future ICF experiments.

Abstract:We present a design of indirect-drive pulse shape for inertial confinement fusion ignition capsules using laser energy similar to 1.6 MJ with a moderate gain (similar to 10) on the Shenguang IV laser facility. The trade-off fuel compression (pressure) for resistance to the hydrodynamic instability (HI) in the recent high-foot (HF) implosion campaign [Dittrich T R et al Phys. Rev. Lett. 112 (2014) 055002] is recovered. The proposed design modifies the "main" pulse shape, which features a decompression-recompression step for the fuel shell resulting in higher areal density than that of the "simple" HF design, and thereby approaches the conditions required for ignition avoiding at the expense of more laser energy while holding the HI under control.

Abstract:Abstract The optimization of laser pulse shapes is of great importance and a major challenge for laser direct-drive implosions. In this paper, we propose an efficient intelligent method to perform laser pulse optimization via hydrodynamic simulations guided by the genetic algorithm and random forest algorithm. Compared to manual optimizations, the machine-learning guided method is able to efficiently improve the areal density by a factor of 63% and reduce the in-flight-aspect ratio by a factor of 30% at the same time. A relationship between the maximum areal density and ion temperature is also achieved by the analysis of the big simulation dataset. This design method has been successfully demonstrated by the 2021 summer double-cone ignition experiments conducted at the SG-II upgrade laser facility and has great prospects for the design of other inertial fusion experiments.

Abstract:In inertial confinement approaches to fusion, the asymmetry of target implosion is a major obstacle to achieving high gain in the laboratory. A recently proposed octahedral spherical hohlraum makes it possible to naturally create spherical target irradiation without supplementary symmetry control. Before any decision is made to pursue an ignition-scale laser system based on the octahedral hohlraum, one needs to test the concept with the existing facilities. Here, we report a proof-of-concept experiment for the novel octahedral hohlraum geometry on the cylindrically configured SGIII laser facility without a symmetry control. All polar and equatorial self-emission images of the compressed target show a near round shape of convergence ratio 15 under both square and shaped laser pulses. The observed implosion performances agree well with the ideal spherical implosion simulation. It also shows limitations with using the existing facilities and adds further weight to the need to move to a spherical port geometry for future ignition laser facilities.

A wedged-peak-pulse design with medium fuel adiabat (entropy) for indirect-drive fusion

Abstract:In central hot-spot ignition of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), a spherical capsule containing deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion fuel is imploded to a much smaller sphere so as to achieve high fuel density and high temperature in the central hot spot, triggering ignition and producing significant thermonuclear output. Low-adiabat (entropy) implosions maximize the fuel compression. Unfortunately, experiments on the National Ignition Facility has demonstrated that the hydrodynamic instability, which leads to hot-spot deformation, main-fuel-layer distortion and ablator mixing into the hot spot, is much prominent than expected [1]. High-foot high-adiabat implosions, with higher ablation velocities and larger density gradient scale lengths, are designed to reduce ablation-front Rayleigh-Taylor instability induced mixing of ablator material into the DT hot spot [2]. Nevertheless, the laser energy required for ignition is approximately proportional to the square of the fuel adiabat, and it seems hard to design a high-adiabat ignition target for the current mega joule laser facilities. In this report, we propose a design of a wedged-peak-pulse at late stage of the indirect drive, for a medium fuel adiabat. First, during the wedged-peak-pulse the radiation drive grows gradually creating a series of compression waves which compress the fusion fuel without significantly raising the fuel adiabat. Second, the compression waves merges as they travel into the hot spot forming a strong inward shock wave or compression wave, which prohibits the reflection of the outward rebounding shock (from the spherical center) at the interface of the hot spot and main fuel layer, thus stabilizing the deceleration stage hydrodynamic instability. With the wedged-peak-pulse, the fuel adiabat is kept at reasonable value such that the one-dimensional (1D) performance of the capsule is better than that of the high-foot implosions and comparable to that of the low-foot implosions. Meanwhile, the hydrodynamic instability, at both the ablator/fuel interface and hot-spot/main-fuel interface, are significantly reduced as compared with low-foot implosions. Simulations with the LARED-JC code indicate that the wedged-peak pulse is achievable with a (cylinder) hohlraum driven by a laser facility with energy of ~2.0MJ. Moreover, our scheme is also robust with respect to the maximum radiation temperature. We expect that the new type of design would be a good way for indirect-drive ICF on mega-joule laser facilities.

Abstract:The laser energy will be increased substantially when the Shenguang-II laser facility upgrade is completed and the petawatt picosecond laser beam will be equipped at the same time. For the fast ignition approach, direct-drive implosions have some advantages over indirect-drive ones, such as higher energy efficiency and lower mixing of cone material into fuel. Based on Shenguang-II upgraded laser facility, integrated direct-drive fast ignition experiments will be carried out and it will contribute to the further understanding of the relevant physics such as integrated coupling efficiency. The radiation hydrodynamic code Multi1D is used to design fast-ignition targets, and the optimized target parameters are achieved. The optimized target has a relatively thick wall (35 μm) and 420 μm-outer-radius CH shell, which are consistent with the scaling laws in target design. The deposition in the optimization target of the hot electrons generated by the picosecond petawatt pulse is also calculated according to the hot electrons scaling relation. The results show that the achieved areal density is high enough to stop the hot electrons.

Abstract:In the electron-driven fast-ignition approach to inertial confinement fusion, petawatt laser pulses are required to generate MeV electrons that deposit several tens of kilojoules in the compressed core of an imploded DT shell. We review recent progress in the understanding of intense laser plasma interactions (LPI) relevant to fast ignition. Increases in computational and modeling capabilities, as well as algorithmic developments have led to enhancement in our ability to perform multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of LPI at relevant scales. We discuss the physics of the interaction in terms of laser absorption fraction, the laser-generated electron spectra, divergence, and their temporal evolution. Scaling with irradiation conditions such as laser intensity are considered, as well as the dependence on plasma parameters. Different numerical modeling approaches and configurations are addressed, providing an overview of the modeling capabilities and limitations. In addition, we discuss the comparison of simulation results with experimental observables. In particular, we address the question of surrogacy of today's experiments for the full-scale fast ignition problem.

Abstract:Kinetic physics has the potential to impact the performance of indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. In near vacuum hohlraums (or vacuum hohlraums), the high-Z plasma expands from the hohlraum wall and collides with the blow-off from the capsule (or the low-density fill-gas). Such collision produces conditions in which kinetic effects may dominate since the ion-ion mean free paths are larger than the size of the interaction region. In the present work, we present the experimental evidence supported by simulations of kinetic effects launched in the interpenetration layer between the laser-driven hohlraum plasma bubbles and the corona plasma of the compressed pellet on the Shenguang-III prototype laser facility. Our study showed kinetic shocks arisen in the hohlraum wall/ablator (or the low-density fill-gas) interpenetration region, which result in efficient acceleration of high energy ions. When these high energy ions were deposited inside the capsule, it resulted in significant low-mode asymmetry of the implosion capsule since there are no high energy ions from the laser entrance holes. These studies provide novel insight into the interactions and dynamics of a vacuum hohlraum and near vacuum hohlraum.

Abstract:The double-cone ignition (DCI) scheme has been proposed as one of the alternative approaches to inertial confinement fusion, based on direct-drive and fast-ignition, in order to reduce the requirement for the driver energy. To evaluate the conical implosion energetics from the laser beams to the plasma flows, a series of experiments have been systematically conducted. The results indicate that 89%–96% of the laser energy was absorbed by the target, with moderate stimulated Raman scatterings. Here 2%–6% of the laser energy was coupled into the plasma jets ejected from the cone tips, which was mainly restricted by the mass reductions during the implosions inside the cones. The supersonic dense jets with a Mach number of 4 were obtained, which is favorable for forming a high-density, nondegenerated plasma core after the head-on collisions. Abstract:Comprehensive understanding and possible control of parametric instabilities in the context of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) remains a challenging task. The details of the absorption processes and the detrimental effects of hot electrons on the implosion process require as much effort on the experimental side as on the theoretical and simulation side. This paper describes a proposal for experimental studies on nonlinear interaction of intense laser pulses with a high-temperature plasma under conditions corresponding to direct-drive ICF schemes. We propose to develop a platform for laser-plasma interaction studies based on foam targets. Parametric instabilities are sensitive to the bulk plasma temperature and the density scale length. Foam targets are sufficiently flexible to allow control of these parameters. However, investigations conducted on small laser facilities cannot be extrapolated in a reliable way to real fusion conditions. It is therefore necessary to perform experiments at a multi-kilojoule energy level on medium-scale facilities such as OMEGA or SG-III. An example of two-plasmon decay instability excited in the interaction of two laser beams is considered.

Abstract:In indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the incident laser beam could excite laser plasma instabilities (LPI) such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two plasmon decay (TPD) besides gently heat the hohlraum through collisional absorption. These instabilities would largely reduce the X-ray conversion and degrade the drive symmetry of the radiation environment. In addition, when the amplitude of parametric instability increases to a certain level, there would be interplay between different instabilities, which makes LPI complicated and unpredictable. Therefore, LPI has become one of the major challenge in achieving ignition. LPI research during recent few years made great strides in identifying, understanding, and controlling instabilities in the context of laser fusion. This paper reviews the progress in this important field according to laser (L), plasma (P), and instability (I). Prospects for the application of our improved understanding for indirect drive ICF and some exciting research opportunities are also discussed.

Abstract:Octahedral spherical hohlraums with a single laser ring at an injection angle of 55 degrees are attractive concepts for laser indirect drive due to the potential for achieving the x-ray drive symmetry required for high convergence implosions. Laser-plasma instabilities, however, are a concern given the long laser propagation path in such hohlraums. Significant stimulated Raman scattering has been observed in cylindrical hohlraums with similar laser propagation paths during the ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). In this Rapid Communication, experiments demonstrating low levels of laser-driven plasma instability (LPI) in spherical hohlraums with a laser injection angle of 55 degrees are reported and compared to that observed with cylindrical hohlraums with injection angles of 28.5 degrees and 55 degrees, similar to that of the NIF. Significant LPI is observed with the laser injection of 28.5 degrees in the cylindrical hohlraum where the propagation path is similar to the 55 degrees injection angle for the spherical hohlraum. The experiments are performed on the SGIII laser facility with a total 0.35-mu m incident energy of 93 kJ in a 3 nsec pulse. These experiments demonstrate the role of hohlraum geometry in LPI and demonstrate the need for systematic experiments for choosing the optimal configuration for ignition studies with indirect drive inertial confinement fusion.

Abstract:Controlled fusion reactions with ignition of uncompressed solid DT by DT ion beam was found to require light ion beam current densities of 10 10 A/cm 2 and energy densities in the order of Ed = 10 8 J/cm 2 . These conditions were very far beyond the available beam technologies. However the CPA laser technology has provided these beam densities. The measurements of Badziak et al with very clean i.e. with a contrast ratio above 10 8 TWps laser pulses demonstrated that relativistic self-focusing was avoided and the conditions of plane wave geometry could be applied to produce a skin layer interaction process. The experiments confirmed that the emitted ion blocks driven by the nonlinear force against and with the laser beam showed the concluded 10 10 A/cm 2 moving within narrow angels. We report how the limit Ed may be realized such that the laser driven plasma block as a kind of light ion beam driver may induce a reaction in uncompressed solid DT where 10 kJ-ps laser pulses may produce several 10 MJ fusion energy.

Abstract:In the scheme of electron-driven fast ignition of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), MeV relativistic electron beams driven by ultraintense petawatt laser pulses are required and electron energy of several tens of kilojoules should be deposited in the compressed core of an imploded DT shell. The beam quality is crucial to the success of fast ignitor. In order to study the generation and transport of the relativistic electron beam, a three-dimensional high-performance parallel particle-in-cell code is developed and improved. In this review, this paper shows the researches on the generation of high-quality electron beams and the method of beam divergence controlling of our research group. Two main reasons for poor beam quality are firstly introduced: pre-plasma effect and random scattering of the magnetic field produced by the beam instability. In addition, enhancement of electron beam flux and collimation of its propagation are investigated. Four ways to obtain collimated electrons are put forward: 1) reduce the pre-plasma effect with a double cone target; 2) collimate fast electrons in specially engineered targets with the spontaneously generated magnetic field during its transportation; 3) collimate fast electrons with external magnetic field; 4) control the beam instability at the laser-plasma interface.

Abstract:In the present letter, we propose the design of a wedged-peak pulse at the late stage of indirect drive. Our simulations of one-and two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics show that the wedged-peak-pulse design can raise the drive pressure and capsule implosion velocity without significantly raising the fuel adiabat. It can thus balance the energy requirement and hydrodynamic instability control at both ablator/fuel interface and hot-spot/fuel interface. This investigation has implication in the fusion ignition at current mega-joule laser facilities. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:In the study of inertial confinement fusion physics, the characteristics, temporal and spatial evolution of kinetic effects at the plasma interfaces attract crucial interest recently because they can affect the laser energy deposition, laser plasma instabilities, radiation asymmetry and implosion performance. A successful design of inertial confinement fusion requires the accurate description of the temporal and spatial evolution of the kinetic effects at the plasma interfaces, which is also a very challenging and unresolved problem in high energy density physics. In this paper, we will review our recent researches on the kinetic effects and their influence on laser plasma instabilities and implosion performance: (1) Electrostatic field arisen in the hohlraum wall/ablator (or the low-density fill-gas) interpenetration region will result in efficient acceleration of high energy ions, which is a source of the low-mode asymmetry of the implosion capsule. (2) The mechanism for the electrostatic field generation and the anomalous mix in the interpenetration layer at the high-Z and low-Z plasma interface and its effects on the laser plasma instabilities. (3) Reconstruction of the spontaneous electric and magnetic fields through proton radiography.
Octahedral Spherical Hohlraum and Its Laser Arrangement for Inertial Fusion

Abstract:A recent publication [K. Lan et al., Phys. Plasmas 21, 010704 (2014)] proposed a spherical hohlraum with six laser entrance holes of octahedral symmetry at a specific hohlraum-to-capsule radius ratio of 5.14 for inertial fusion study, which has robust high symmetry during the capsule implosion and superiority on low backscatter without supplementary technology. This paper extends the previous one by studying the laser arrangement and constraints of octahedral hohlraum in detail. As a result, it has serious beam crossing at θL≤45°, and θL=50° to 60° is proposed as the optimum candidate range for the golden octahedral hohlraum, here θL is the opening angle that the laser quad beam makes with the Laser Entrance Hole (LEH) normal direction. In addition, the design of the LEH azimuthal angle should avoid laser spot overlapping on hohlraum wall and laser beam transferring outside hohlraum from a neighbor LEH. The octahedral hohlraums are flexible and can be applicable to diverse inertial fusion drive approaches. This paper also applies the octahedral hohlraum to the recent proposed hybrid indirect-direct drive approach.

Abstract:By 3D particle-in-cell simulation and analysis, we propose a plasma lens to make high intensity, high contrast laser pulses with a steep front. When an intense, short Gaussian laser pulse of circular polarization propagates in near-critical plasma, it drives strong currents of relativistic electrons which magnetize the plasma. Three pulse shaping effects are synchronously observed when the laser passes through the plasma lens. The laser intensity is increased by more than 1 order of magnitude while the initial Gaussian profile undergoes self-modulation longitudinally and develops a steep front. Meanwhile, a nonrelativistic prepulse can be absorbed by the overcritical plasma lens, which can improve the laser contrast without affecting laser shaping of the main pulse. If the plasma skin length is properly chosen and kept fixed, the plasma lens can be used for varied laser intensity above 10(19) W/cm(2).
