Abstract:The nobility of Studies: Padua between diplomacy, culture and religion The paduan noble ideology looked with interest in higher education both for the possibilities of employing nobles as lector and for the rich «propinae» derived from the degrees in the Sacred Colleges. The city encompassed, however, an extensive educational system with a prestigious Jesuit college and a military academy. Even the venetian patriciate developed the University according to careful cultural policies: state financing, engagement of famous professors and social control of the city. Religious, economic and cultural ties made the mobility of Polish nobles students to Italy particularly appreciated. The letters of an illustrious student, such as chancellor Jan Zamoyski, testify to the persistence over time of the ties also in terms of the history of European culture and the formation of its élites. The creation of flexible commissions for the granting of academic degrees encouraged these relationships.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to provide a conceptual approach to the study of religion through an intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective. As an example, it considers hagiography and its various manifestations in the artistic and cultural domains, among others. This study proposes three points of discussion. Firstly, it addresses an approach and delimitation of the religious aspect, specifically focusing on the worship of San Benito de Nursia. Additionally, it considers the Latin American political context and its approach to religión. Secondly, it characterizes the religious aspect through the veneration of the Black Christ of Esquipulas and the Marian rite of the Candelaria, which involves the syncretism of the Pachamama. Lastly, it emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to religious topics, using the hagiography of Santo Domingo de Heredia as an example. In summary, this study proposes three axes of analysis to evaluate the significance of interdisciplinary studies in the field of religion.

Abstract:El significante interculturalidad, acunado en America Latina, ha trasvasado sus fronteras para entrar en todas las instituciones publicas de Occidente. La celeridad de su expansion, pareja al fenomeno migratorio, no ha permitido una reflexion sobre la complejidad de su significado que deberia partir del de su lexema “cultura”. Las colisiones de intereses economicos dispares, provocadas por la globalizacion economica y politica, han desvelado una no despreciable asimetria conceptual, claramente perceptible, entre la categoria occidental cultura y la de las poblaciones originarias americanas Buen Vivir . La responsabilidad de la Antropologia y de todas las Ciencias Sociales es buscar los espacios conceptuales de confluencia que permitan la convivencia retroalimentadora entre ambas poblaciones. Para ello sera necesario que el homo occidental vuelva a reconciliarse con sus origenes, guiado por el homo originario americano. Un camino apasionante que obligara a la revision de todas las estructuras organizativas de Occidente y que permitira la creacion de puentes para la comunicacion de los saberes y logros ya compartidos.

Abstract:Background and aim of the work: The Italian health profile of foreigners depends from several factors and events, such as: environmental, microbiological, cultural and / or behavioral. Healthcare professionals might to have greater and better basic and post-basic training in approaching foreign users. Listening and empathy, with complementary training can help to reduce distances and better understand the patient's socio-cultural background. The aim of the study is to explore the basic intercultural knowledge of the Italian nurses, the perception of the problems encountered during the interaction with foreign users and any solution strategies. Methods: From December 2020 to March 2021 a national observational study was conducted by involving 327 nurses. Results: 85.5% among participants were females and most of them aged between 20 and 30 years (20.20%) and were employed in medical wards (22.60%). Among the hindering barriers explored, linguistic ones are highlighted (41.30%), specifically for the description of hospital rules (34.90%) and of social and health regulations (34.90%). Conclusions: From the present findings, it emerges that the cultural competence of nurses could be developed by offering a multicultural education through basic and post-basic courses. Intercultural Communication between Long-Stay Immigrants and Catalan Primary Care Nurses: A Qualitative Approach to Rebalancing Power

Abstract:There is a gap between the preferences of immigrant patients and their experiences with intercultural communication. This study aims to explore the experiences and perspectives of long-stay immigrants on intercultural communication in encounters with primary care (PC) nurses. Participants were selected by purposive sampling at the Maresme Primary Care Center. A focus group and five in-depth interviews with long-stay immigrants from eight countries were carried out. Data collection was guided by a script previously validated by a group of experts. We conducted a qualitative analysis following Charmaz's approach, and data saturation was reached with 11 patients (one focus group and five interviews). Long-stay immigrants would like closer and more personalized communication exchanges with greater humanity, as well as polite and respectful manners as they perceive signs of an asymmetrical care relationship. Those who had negative communication experiences tried to justify some of the behaviors as a result of having free access to public health services. This is one of the few existing studies from the point of view of long-stay immigrants. Achieving effective intercultural communication requires a process of self-reflection, awareness-raising and commitment, both on a personal and institutional level, to eliminate the asymmetry in the nurse-patient relationship. Nurses should be trained in person-centered intercultural communication.

Abstract:The aim of this historical research project is to examine the contribution of Cristina Trivulzio Princess of Belgiojoso to the development of the nursing organisation in Italy. Specifically, the analysis focuses on the period of the Roman Republic, as in 1849 Cristina Trivulzio (Princess of Belgiojoso) was one of the person in charge of the service of caring and rescuing of the injured. For this reason, nineteen volumes were analysed out of the one hundred twenty-nine volumes found in five Italian historical archives. All documentary sources were evaluated accordingly to the Chabod historical research method (1999), while for their critical interpretation a scheme of analysis was created. As a result, five topics clearly emerged from the data collected: organisation, health politics, training, research and nursing. To sum up, this research reveals that the contributions of Cristina Trivulzio are so relevant that she may be counted among the founders of the italian nursing organisation.

Abstract:Aim To catch a representative view of a multicultural population's needs. Design Qualitative study. Methods Semi‐structured interviews were conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 with the project's stakeholders, migrants, and residents. Data analysis was performed using a multimethod textual analysis technique. Findings Territorial barriers, lack of social network, and specific professionals' training emerged as healthcare delivery obstacles. For migrants, language improvement emerged as a health priority. A deep relationship with migrants emerged as a deficiency for residents. Conclusion A welcoming project equipped with solid leadership and the right resources can be fundamental in mediating health promotion and integration. In this process, the involvement of the resident population is essential. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care Analysing the migrants' needs and the strengths and limitations of a reception system could help identify the challenges for professionals in delivering culturally competent care. In this context, the nurse's role becomes relevant, being responsible for taking charge and caring for the population and the link between professionals and the population. What Problem Did the Study Address? The study addressed the problem of improving the overall health of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, mainly focusing on reception and integration into a new society process. What Were the Main Findings? Worse health was identified with adaptation, integration, and family problems. Territorial barriers emerged, hindering good health. Abstract:At the end of the 19th century an Italian woman writer, Maria Savi Lopez, published the fictionalized version of a journey to Iceland, Nei Paesi del Nord (In the Northern Countries, 1893). Through the eyes of a group of English people sailing from their home country, the author weaves a choral narrative that spreads among the Italian reading public heterogeneous information about largely unknown cultures, folklores and natural environments. The narrative discourse creates a structured net, where different voices perform specific roles and encourage the readers to partake their adventures while sailing into the protective, comfortable atmosphere of the steamer.

Abstract:Background: One of the challenges that our Italian National Health Service is facing is the structural change of society, regarding the migratory flows recorded in the last thirty years with the consequent increase in faithful who follow religions other than the Catholic one. Aim of the study: This study highlights the critical issues due to religious indications of different faiths which can have implications for our healthcare system. The study analyses the different concept of health, illness, well-being and pain, life and death, gender issues, rules regarding diet, fasting and drugs that can be taken by the patients. Religious norms regarding procreation, termination of pregnancy, and the use of contraceptive methods are also considered; as well as euthanasia, organ donation and the specific needs for end-of-life rites in different religious faiths, as they are presented in the literature and as they emerged in the dialogue with the national representatives of the religious faiths that make up the Interreligious Table of Rome. Conclusions and future perspective. The complexity of this relatively recent Italian reality necessarily leads to an in-depth analysis of religious and cultural diversity. The National Health Service must face a series of changes which concern both the adaptation of health structures and the adequate preparation of health workers, who are called upon to know how to communicate and offer care and assistance to all.

Abstract:This study explores nursing students' perceptions of institutionalized elderly care, aiming to identify attitudes and biases that influence their academic and professional development in gerontological nursing. Conducted with 128 students across two campuses, this qualitative study utilized 15 focus groups for data collection. Five primary themes emerged through thematic and inductive analysis: Institutionalized Living, Stereotypes, Improvement Proposals, Exemplary Practices and Positive Observations and Educational Strategies and Person-centered Care Integration. Findings underscore the multifaceted nature of elderly long-term care settings, highlighting the prevalence of loneliness. Despite institutionalization's intent to mitigate loneliness, results suggest its effectiveness is variable, with a deficiency in social interaction opportunities. This underscores the imperative for comprehensive socialization programs. Additionally, integrating students into professional teams has been shown to foster positive interpersonal relationships significantly. Recommendations for enhancing care quality include personalizing living spaces, strengthening bonds between staff and residents, and enriching the nursing curriculum with advanced professional training.

Abstract:Urban Studies, Ahead of Print. Recent research has highlighted the connection between commoning processes and the creation of new infrastructures of care in the areas of Southern Europe which were most affected by austerity policies and by the connected crisis of social reproduction. The objective of this paper is to shed new light on the caring practices organised through and within urban commons by using the theoretical lenses provided by Subaltern Studies, which also explored processes of collective self-organisation, the development of solidarity ties and reclamation of social welfare. The main theoretical reference is provided by the work of Partha Chatterjee on 'The politics of the governed'. The discussion is conducted through the analysis of the caring practices organised within the Scugnizzo Liberato, one of the urban commons of the city of Naples, located in Southern Italy, investigated through a prolonged process of co-research.

Abstract:Abstract Background In recent years, given the change in the paradigm of management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), the different societies have been working to ensure continuous, homogeneous, multidisciplinary social and health care with the patients and their autonomy as the central axis; promoting the creation of Integrated Care Units for IBD patients (ICU-IBD). In the latest analyses of our ICU, attention was drawn to the progressive increase in the demand for care from non-Spanish-speaking migrant patients. This prompted us to carry out this study, with the aim of finding out how this population uses our unit and how it responds to their needs. Methods A retrospective longitudinal descriptive observational study with analysis of demographic, clinical and care variables of all non-Spanish-speaking migrant patients followed in the ICU-IBD of our centre until 30 June 2023. Results Thirty patients of 14 different nationalities were included, with Moroccan being the most frequent (43.3%); only one of them (3.3%) was fluent in Spanish. Other clinical and demographic characteristics of note were: mean age at follow-up of 43.2 years, predominantly female (66.6%) and predominantly Crohn's disease (63.3%) (Table 1). A total of 86.7% of the patients were referred to our ICU-IBD from the Emergency Department, which they attended due to symptoms related to flare-ups of their intestinal disease. After the initial assessments, we observed that 73.3% did not attend for check-ups, 83.3% of the patients attended the emergency department in the event of a clinical flare-up, and 93.3% showed irregular adherence to treatment. In the subsequent follow-up, we observed a significant change, 76.7% regularly attended consultations, 76.7% consulted the unit in the event of an outbreak and 60% followed treatment regularly (Figure 1). These changes coincide with a socio-health intervention carried out by the specialised nurse; in which patients and their environment were provided with information regarding their disease, treatment and use of the UAI-EII; as well as addressing socio-health problems in order to facilitate their wellbeing and integration into the community. Conclusion In view of our results and the data published in other studies, we suggest that the language barrier, the social and healthcare culture of the country of origin, the socioeconomic situation and integration into the new social environment are factors to be taken into account in order to achieve adequate comprehensive care for this migrant population. The role of the IBD nurse is fundamental in the daily work of offering individualised, continuous and comprehensive care to both the patient and their environment; even more so in this population with marked socio-cultural barriers.

Experiences and Suggestions of Nurses Involved in Caring for Migrant Populations in Italy: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:The aim of this research is to explore nurses' experiences in caring for migrants, regular and non-regular, within outpatient clinics in Italy. Materials and Methods: Thirteen nurses have been interviewed through online semi-structured interviews, conducted with the support of a questionnaire, made by researchers, consisting of open-ended questions on legislative issues, cultural issues, and regarding best practices. Purposive sampling has been used, along with phone and email recruitment. The audio recordings of the interviews were verbatim transcribed, then examined. This study is a qualitative descriptive fundamental research project. Results: Interviewees highlight migrants' difficulties in accessing care, critical points of legislation, transcultural skills crucial to nurses, and good practices. A total of 105 labels were developed and grouped into 23 categories under 7 themes (Italian legislation and migrants; structural difficulties in assistance; the influence of politics; the work of NGOs and associations; nursing care; winning strategies; and the role of the Family and Community Nurse). Conclusion: The research highlights how access to care for migrants is hindered by legislative, structural, and cultural barriers, with consequences on the NHS (improper accesses to the emergency room, increased workload, and economic expenditure). For the full realization of the right to health, as enshrined by Art. 32 of the Constitution, changes are needed with respect to regulations and professionals' training.

Abstract:Introduction: Spain is a multicultural society and has been defined by several authors as an immigrant-receiving country. Moroccan women of childbearing age constitute 28.20% of Moroccan immigrants. Objectives: describe the interaction processes that occur between health professionals and Moroccan immigrant women in reproductive healthcare. Methods: Qualitative descriptive study based on Grounded Theory. Thirty immigrant women from Morocco and thirty-five health professionals participated in the study. Specific dimensions of analysis were defined and used to design the interview guide and focus groups. Results: In the healthcare encounter, the construction of an effective communicative space between the people involved in it is essential; however, the language barrier and the interpersonal relationships characterized by silence in the encounter make a meaningful healthcare relationship difficult for those who participate in it. Conclusions: There are communication and relationship problems that alter healthcare and the professional-patient relationship which require the use of translation programs, the incorporation of intercultural meters, and the development of cultural competence in health professionals.
[Treating and caring for migrant populations suffering from infectious diseases: the experience of the hub&spoke network set up by the Civico Benfratelli ARNAS Hospital in Palermo (Sicily Region, Southern Italy)]

Abstract:This paper describes the experience carried out in a general hospital, implemented in collaboration with a city network of associations involved in the care of migrant populations. Considering the vulnerability of these populations, the difficulty of access to healthcare facilities, and the linguistic and cultural barriers, an organisational model was designed characterised by the concentration of highly complex care (hub centre) supported by a network of peripheral reception centres (spoke centres) responsible for selecting patients and sending them to the centre of reference with the aim of offering screening for sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, taking charge of pathologies, including non-infectious ones, treatment, and follow-up. The effectiveness of the model was measured in relation to the continuum of care and its effectiveness with reference to the Joint Commission International guidelines.

Abstract:Introduction: Measuring and understanding attitudes toward migrants is crucial in Health Sciences professionals. Nursing students, as future professionals in the healthcare system, must be comprehensively trained and prepared from the undergraduate level to effectively face the challenges of caring for health and disease processes in an increasingly globalized world. Our study aims to determine the level of attitudinal change in nursing students for immigrants, based on a training intervention with sessions of coexistence with immigrants in Spain. Methods: Quasi-experimental controlled and non-randomized study, carried out in 2019 in Nursing School La Fe, Valencia (Spain), with 201 participants (74 intervention group, 127 control group). Instrument: Attitudes toward Immigration Instrument (IAHI) questionnaire. Educational techniques of the training intervention: Speak outs and Human Libraries. Descriptive statistical analysis and comparison of results between groups was performed. Results: The participants in the intervention group showed significant changes in attitude modification, both in the total score of the questionnaire and in 4 of the 5 dimensions (pre-post intervention medition). When comparing the differences between the intervention group and the control group, we observed significant differences in 3 of the 5 dimensions: equality principles and policies, positive favorability, and negative favorability. Conclussion: Sessions involving coexistence, discussion, and reflection with immigrants, as educational intervention methods for nursing students (Speak outs and Human Libraries), are useful and effective tools to promote positive attitudinal changes toward immigrants within the healthcar context in nursing students.
