Abstract:Whatever else one can or cannot say about the Roman Empire, of one thing it is possible to be entirely definitive. There was nothing accidental about the existence of that empire. Empire was what Rome did. The Spanish Empire, by contrast, was entirely different. From the outset of the creation of what we now know as the modern state of Spain, its internal construction and external expansion was overwhelmingly accidental in design. The internal cohesion of the newly created sixteenth-century state was the product of dynastic marriages between families (and kingdoms) that had hitherto existed entirely apart. The subsequent and rapid transformation of that state into Europe’s largest and most belligerent power was the product of a seemingly endless series of dynastic accidents: of marriages made and marriages missed, of husbands unexpectedly dead, of princesses lost in childbirth, and of royal babies stillborn or (in one crucial case) deemed mentally ill.1 And the movement of this emerging European power onto the global stage was the unexpected product of parallel but unconnected processes of private enterprise by Spanish citizens (or, of course, in the most famous case, by a first-generation immigrant son of Genoa). Though always sustained by its Catholic mission, the Spanish Empire came together initially by accident, not by design.

Abstract:This article uses Spain's participation at the Cairo Congress of Arab Music (1932) as the basis to raise questions pertaining to the place of Arab music in the racial imagination of Europeans. It argues that Spain's unique response to the challenges arising from the study of Arab music in a context of colonial rivalry reveals still uncharted tensions and fractures running through musicology and Orientalist discourse at the time. My line of inquiry sheds light on the origins and characteristics of the forms of self-reflexivity evident in the musicological work produced by Spain and other European countries. In what ways did the shifting tectonics of North African politics impact or even impair the capacity of European musicological discourse to inscribe Arab music in the global imagination in ways supportive of Europe's identity projects? To what extent was the discourse on Arab music emerging in the context of colonial rivalry suitable for Spain to rewrite the memories of its past of anti-Muslim violence? What could Spain's unique position as both an insider and an outsider relative to notions of Europe reveal about western attitudes towards Arab music in a context of colonial rivalry? The answers to these questions lie not only with the peculiar ways in which Spain addressed its identity crises, but also with the extent to which the Cairo Congress exposed the inadequacy of reigning paradigms in musicology, anthropology and the social sciences, and underscored their inability to keep up with the changing face of North African societies.

The emporion in the Ancient Western Mediterranean. Trade and Colonial Encounters from the Archaic to the Hellenistic Period

Abstract:Twenty-five years ago, publication of the landmark volume L’emporion (Bresson & Rouillard 1993) had a major impact on studies of the ancient Mediterranean. It marked one of the first attempts to focus attention systematically on the kinds of trade enclaves that ancient Greeks named “emporia” and to review the existing textual and archaeological evidence concerning these spaces of cross-cultural encounter and the roles they played in ancient economic systems and processes of colonial interaction. The questions, enigmas, and evidentiary lacunae revealed by that exploratory venture provoked a torrent of vigorous empirical research and theoretical debate, especially in the western Mediterranean, where programs of archaeological research on this theme became particularly active in France, Italy, and Spain. The current volume re-examines the phenomenon of the emporion in the light of this subsequent wealth of new studies and data. However, it also seeks to set the analysis within an expanded international and cross-disciplinary framework and to enlarge the audience for this discussion. The authors include scholars from France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, and from the fields of anthropology, archaeology, classics, and history.

Nasrid Granada: The Case for Spain’s Cross-Cultural Identity

Abstract:For 2000 years, the history of Granada has been the story of its peoples—native Iberian, Roman, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and gypsy—who bequeathed a multi-cultural heritage to the city, forged by momentous racial, religious and political conflicts. That heritage is central to Spain’s vexed quest for its own identity, and pre-eminent in that quest is the encounter between Islam and Christianity that took place there. Based on historical sources including oral and written testimonies, early historiography and contemporary historical views, this article considers the answers to two key questions, with specific reference to the Nasrid dynasty of Granada: (i) how did the Nasrids contribute to the culture of Andalusia and the late medieval Mediterranean, and (ii) was religious difference an obstacle to cultural dialogue in Granada in the late Middle Ages? The contention is that Granada’s importance as a meeting place between Islam and Christianity hinges on its apparent transition from Muslim state to Christian enclave, an event crucial to our understanding of the history of the Iberian Peninsula, and also of Europe.

Abstract:The Spanish Royal Crown administration collaborated with international experts in the 19th century to produce a pioneering set of forestry maps. Forestry held a privileged place in cameralist thought and had material characteristics that were amenable to standardized classification. Analysis of this project revealed very clearly how national and international communities of experts generated knowledge about the Spanish territory. Producing credible environmental knowledge at that time required an international network of disciplined experts, and the Royal Corps of Forestry Engineers saw forestry maps as a way of producing a new community of experts. The map colors and legends corresponded to a new international classification system and constituted a groundbreaking accomplishment because of their potential to unify Spanish administration practices. The rigorously empirical descriptions of trees also revealed the interplay of the cosmopolitan values of scientific internationalism with the social tensions of that century.

Abstract:case studies. Some chapters are more theoretical than others, some more polemic. ‘The myth of the chief: prestige goods, power and personhood in the European Bronze Age’ by Joanna Brück & David Fontijn is evidently polemic and inspiring although, at least in part, I tend to disagree with the relational approach to personhood as presented here which is contradicted by thousands of burials from Central and Northern Europe that speak of a normative, institutionalised social personhood. This issue is also the topic for much of Marie Louise Stig Sørensen’s chapter, ‘Identity, gender and dress in the European Bronze Age’, which in some ways balances and indirectly responds to Brück & Fontijn. But the latter also wish to challenge the whole idea of an advanced Bronze Age political economy based on commodity trade. Here Tobias Kienlin indirectly lends supports in his chapter on Bronze Age metalworking, seeing specialisation but not beyond local kinship groups. One only needs, however, to read a handful of the other contributions on trade, transport, technology and mining, or Christopher Pare’s chapter on ‘Weighing, commodification and money’ to find a different perspective. In this way, the thematic chapters engage the reader in an ongoing theoretical and interpretative argument, which also includes a ‘Rethinking of Bronze Age cosmology’ by Joakim Goldhahn and new interpretations of rock art from the Alps to Scandinavia. Many chapters deal with what adds up to an economic history of the Bronze Age: fields and land divisions, animals, plant cultivation, salt production and trade. Thus, Part I is full of engaging culture historical and interpretative articles that will provide a useful starting point for both the student and the Bronze Age researcher alike.

The Spanish Counter-Enlightenment: an Overview, 1774–1814

Abstract:At once neglected and deeply controversial, the Spanish Counter- Enlightenment is crucial to understanding the development of Spanish politics and social thought until at least the mid-twentieth century. From Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo’s praise to Javier Herrero’s denigration to the more balanced assessments of present-day scholars, the movement continues to be a source of debate and varying evaluations. Still, key aspects of it remain to be known, including its anthropology, its approach to Enlightened political concepts, its inheritance from Salamanca scholastics and its ideas on interiority and the relationship between the individual and the state. This paper defines these aspects by examining the works of five of the Spanish Counter-Enlightenment’s major representatives: Fernando de Ceballos y Mier, (1732–1802), Vicente Fernández de Valcarce (1723–98), Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro (1735–1809), Francisco Alvarado (1756–1814) and Rafael de Vélez (1777–1850). The first aim is to identify what made the Spanish Counter- Enlightenment unique yet related to the French Counter-Enlightenment that nurtured and preceded it. The second aim is to provide a general overview of the movement even while introducing it to an Englishspeaking audience for the first time.

Abstract:Abstract The chapter summarizes the Spanish conquests and navigation. It also provides a brief summary of how Ferdinand Magellan found another route to the Pacific and the Moluccas, which led to the signing of Treaty of Tordesillas. This divided any newly discovered lands between Spain and Portugal along a Meridian west of the Cape Verde Islands, but no line of demarcation had been set on the other side of the world. This meant that both countries could lay claim to the Spice Islands, as long as Portugal travelled there from the east and Spain from the west. After Magellan's conquest, the Spanish explore the Pacific, which gave them control over the Pacific countries including the Philippines. The chapter also discusses how the charting of 'Urdaneta's Route' made possible a trans-Pacific galleon trade and the profitable colonization of the Philippines and other Latin American countries. Soon ships were travelling regularly from Manila to New Spain. A complex trade network evolved that was truly global in nature. Into Manila would flow spices from the Moluccas and silk and porcelain from China. These would be shipped across the Pacific by the Spanish to Acapulco, a journey of four to six months. The silver came from Potosí, Bolivia where hundreds of thousands of enslaved Incan lives were sacrificed by the Spanish to extract that silver from the bowels of the earth. The mines became the centre of Spanish wealth and were the reason Spain remained powerful during the colonial period. From 1556 to 1783, they extracted some 45,000 tons of silver from these mines. Aside from these, is the silk production as New Spain had a native mulberry tree called the Morera criolla. The Spanish finished their conquest by 1521 and by 1523, the first silkworm eggs had been exported to Mexico. Finally, the chapter closes how England, by means of American privateers, fought off Portugal and Spain.
The Material Worlds of Colonizers in New Spain

Abstract:A combination of historical and archaeological data helps reexamine the material worlds of the Spanish colonizers in Mexico City during the sixteenth century. The historical data consist of the probate inventories of 39 Spanish colonizers, and they reveal information on the wealth of the colonizers and their personal belongings. Of the different kinds of material culture in the probate inventories, I focus only on cloth, clothing, and slaves, as well as on the wealth of colonizers. The archaeological data were obtained by the Programa de Arqueología Urbana in the historic center of Mexico City, and they consist of houses of Spanish colonizers. These data allow us to examine two daily necessities of colonizers: food (including plants and animals) and ceramic pottery. Bringing together these two lines of data reveals the patterns of consumption of colonizers in New Spain and helps us identify different strategies that guided these patterns, including reproducing an acceptable material world modeled after life in Spain, competing in the local social hierarchy, forging relationships with local indigenous people, controlling labor and production, and domesticating a foreign world to meet the expectations of the conquest.

Abstract:The Portuguese and Spanish empires were both global and long lasting. This essay focuses on colonial Spanish America, particularly on the practices of natural history. It also suggests that chivalric-epic ideologies permeated early modem epistemologies, including those of the French and the British. The essay criticizes the application of nineteenth-century models of empire to the understanding of the early modern composite monarchies in the New World. Finally, it explores the ways metropolitan natural philosophy was transformed in the New World kingdoms to bolster patriotic identities.

Abstract:Spanish and Ottoman empires had more similarities that could be found at first glance. Both experienced the take-off as leading force in Europe and Asia respectively, being for a while the most fearful and powerful states during XVI, faced economic and political blunders in XVII century and slightly ended with stagnation in XVIII century (as conventional wisdom says). Using comparative method and cultural analysis, article tries to answer a question – how unique or regular was that issues which stroke Spain and Ottoman Empires, how deeply they were engaged in so called decline narrative, created in XIX century European historiography and is it possible to create common trend for empire`s stagnation using not only historical sociology method (sociology of revolution used by Jack Goldstone and Teda Skocpole) and world-system analysis provided by Immanuel Wallerstein, with emphasis on history of ideas or begriffsgeschichte by Reinhardt Kosseleck. Main results are going to provide a more correct view on the status of Spanish and Turkish Empires during the XVIII century. Despite that Ottomans and Spaniards had obvious differences in political distribution, economic capabilities, warfare tactics and external actions, almost simultaneous decline was based on clear and exact reasons: lack of industrialization (production with high surplus value), hush incorporation of Ottoman and Spanish Empires into World-Economy, lack of defending tariffs, ineffective fiscal system and policy, devastating and lasting wars, decreasing price for agricultural products, down warding Kondratieff cycle, rigid political and social units, which constrain strict political actions. These gaps made the Empire’s decline possible notwithstanding those problems which they had previously. Oppositely, major European states (England, France, Prussia) had made reversed actions, which took a long time, but made European “take-off” inevitable, assured their economical breakaway to further domination over the Ottomans and Spaniards as well.
