Abstract:The intermetallic compounds (IMC) generated during the joining of 316 with NiTi is the key issue hindering the application of heterogeneous alloys. Here, bioinspired sandwich architectures were introduced, i.e., the 316-Cu-NiTi heterogeneous alloy was fabricated by direct energy deposition (DED), with Cu as an intermediate layer to reducing or avoiding of IMCs generated by 316 stainless steel (SS) with NiTi. The experimental results showed that the surface of the prepared 316-Cu-NiTi samples mainly consisted of intermetallic compound phases such as Ti 2 Cu, Ni 3Ti and NiTi. The NiTi layer without obvious cracking, and the microstructure shows a fine dendrite to coarse dendrite transition from the bottom to the top. Along with building direction, the microhardness and elastic modulus of the sample increase linearly, with the highest values at the top of 439 HV 0.2 and 37.30 GPa respectively. The wear mechanism of 316-Cu-NiTi is hybrid wear dominated by adhesive wear, with an average friction coefficient of 0.2, reaching a 71% improvement compared to 316SS substrate. The current study provides guidance for the metallurgical connecting of SS and NiTi alloy heterogeneous materials to achieve crack-free green manufacturing of wear-resistant surfaces.
