Abstract:The Monte-Carlo method is a purely numerical method based on simple algorithms. Contrary to other well-known techniques of solving the Boltzmann equation it can be used to treat complex geometrics, energy dependence of cross- sections, and detailed neutron-nucleus interactions in scattering in a comparatively simple manner. Abstract:There is a need to understand the space-dependent kinetics of fast or thermal reactor physics and the Monte Carlo method should be implemented in kinetics codes as well. In a transient accident (for example, control rod ejection accident or loss of coolant accident), changes in the system are much slower than the prompt neutron lifetime. In the present paper, a method is proposed in which the Monte Carlo method is used to solve the neutron kinetics of reactors, such as the case of a subcritical static reactor with an external neutron source. In the proposed method the time derivative of the neutron equation is set to zero, though the time derivative of the delayed neutron precursor equation is treated without any approximation in the time differentiation of delayed neutron precursor equation. Most kinetics calculation methods originate from the point kinetics method, and they require calculation of excess reactivity at each time step, but the present method does not need calculation of excess reactivity. The neutron counts measured with small fission chambers in the subcritical kinetics experiment using the JAEA fast critical assembly are compared with counts calculated by the proposed method and compared with the measured values. The agreement is good, and the excellent performance of the method for space-dependent neutron kinetics is shown.

Calculation of eigenfunction fluxes in nuclear systems

Abstract:A new Monte Carlo method is being developed to calculate eigenfunction fluxes in critical or near-critical nuclear systems. The correct estimation of fluxes is essential for radiation protection and shielding near these systems, in addition to isotope production, isotope depletion, nuclear criticality and other applications. The proposed method applies to Monte Carlo criticality eigenvalue calculations in which the fission sites in one generation are used as fission sources in subsequent generations. The usual Monte Carlo power iteration method for such problems often calculates fluxes (eigenfunctions) that are inaccurate and very different in symmetric parts of a problem geometry. The proposed method calculates flux distributions by estimating an approximate fission matrix. The way the fission matrix is estimated and used differs from other recent works. Preliminary results are promising.

Abstract:In nuclear reactor physics, deterministic and hybrid calculation methods dominate the field of transient analysis. This implies that important safety assessments are subject to many approximations, which are needed by these methods. This paper proposes the Dynamic Monte Carlo method (Dynamic MC), which solves the coupled Boltzmann and kinetic equations with exact geometry and continuous energy, using only Monte Carlo techniques. For Dynamic MC a number of new techniques are developed, e.g., precursor tracking, forced decay for precursors, and the branchless method. Also, the particle source of the simulation has to be determined differently from what is current standard Monte Carlo practice, and the simulation scheme is adapted. A few example cases are simulated, demonstrating the effectiveness of Dynamic MC. The sample cases vary from simple homogeneous systems to full fuel assemblies with an asymmetric flux profile during the transient. Since Dynamic MC is implemented in the general-purpose Monte Carlo code Tripoli, it can be applied to any geometry.

Abstract:The criticality calculation is carried out with 3-D Monte Carlo code (MCNP). The paper focuses on the introduction of modelling of the core and reflector.The core description is simplified by using repetition structure function of MCNP. keff in different control rods positions are calculated for the case of JRR3, and the result is consistent with that of the reference. This work shows that MCNP is applicable for reactor criticality calculation.
Monte Carlo Simulations of Reactor α Eigen-Values

Abstract:In Monte Carlo simulation, the α eigen values are usually calculated using the (k, α) iteration method. This method can give good results for supercritical and light subcritical systems, but due to the limitation of this method, it can not give the right results of α eigen values in deep subcritical systems. To calculate the α eigen values in deep subcritical systems using Monte Carlo method, a method named Transient Curve Fitting method which is based on the MC transient code TMCC is put forward. The Transient Curve Fitting method can solve the difficulties of simulating the α eigen functions and calculate the α eigen values effectively. In this paper, the results of this method are compared with MCNP results by calculating supercritical and subcritical problems, and they agree well with each other. And then the results of this method are compared with the experimental results of Subcritical Facility in Tsinghua University. And the results represent that the transient curve fitting method can calculate the α eigen values of reactor systems, and can give accurate results in deep subcritical situations.
A hybrid Monte Carlo and response matrix Monte Carlo method in criticality calculation

Abstract:Full core calculations are very useful and important in reactor physics analysis, especially in computing the full core power distributions, optimizing the refueling strategies and analyzing the depletion of fuels. To reduce the computing time and accelerate the convergence, a method named Response Matrix Monte Carlo (RMMC) method based on analog Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the fixed source neutron transport problems in repeated structures. To make more accurate calculations, we put forward the RMMC method based on nonanalog Monte Carlo simulation and investigate the way to use RMMC method in criticality calculations. Then a new hybrid RMMC and MC (RMMC+MC) method is put forward to solve the criticality problems with combined repeated and flexible geometries. This new RMMC+MC method, having the advantages of both MC method and RMMC method, can not only increase the efficiency of calculations, also simulate more complex geometries rather than repeated structures. Several 1-D numerical problems are constructed to test the new RMMC and RMMC+MC method. The results show that RMMC method and RMMC+MC method can efficiently reduce the computing time and variations in the calculations. Finally, the future research directions are mentioned and discussed at the end of this paper to make RMMC method and RMMC+MC method more powerful.

Abstract:In the reactor design and analysis, there is often a need to calculate the effects caused by perturbations of temperature, components and even structure of reactors on reactivity. And in sensitivity studies, uncertainty analysis of target quantities and unclear data adjustment, perturbation calculations are also widely used. To meet the need of different types of reactors (complex, multidimensional systems), Monte Carlo perturbation methods have been developed. In this paper, several kinds of perturbation methods are investigated. Specially, differential operator sampling method and correlated tracking method are discussed in details. MCNP's perturbation calculation capability is discussed by calculating certain problems, from which some conclusions are obtained on the capabilities of the differential operator sampling method used in the perturbation calculation model of MCNP. Also, a code using correlated tracking method has been developed to solve certain problems with cross-section changes, and the results generated by this code agree with the results generated by straightforward Monte Carlo techniques.

Abstract:A new Monte Carlo transport code RMC has been being developed by Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, Beijing as a tool for reactor core analysis on high-performance computing platforms. To meet the requirements of reactor analysis, RMC now has such functions as criticality calculation, fixed-source calculation, burnup calculation and kinetics simulations. Some techniques for geometry treatment, new burnup algorithm, source convergence acceleration, massive tally and parallel calculation, and temperature dependent cross sections processing are researched and implemented in RMC to improve the efficiency. Validation results of criticality calculation, burnup calculation, source convergence acceleration, tallies performance and parallel performance shown in this paper prove the capabilities of RMC in dealing with reactor analysis problems with good performances.

Abstract:Basic conceptions of kinetic parameters,including effective delayed neutron fraction(),effective neutron generation time() and α eigenvalue,and Monte Carlo calculation methods for these values are systematically introduced in this paper.is obtained with a Prompt Method.Perturbation method is chosen to obtain.And then α eigenvalue is obtained by two ways,(i) prompt neutron density attenuation,in other words direct simulation of time evolvement,(ii) indirect method using the result of kp and neutron generation time.Linear fitting is used to get the critical αc eigenvalues which match well with experimental ones.And uncertainties of kinetic parameters with different methods using Monte Carlo method are also analyzed.

Abstract:This paper continues our treatment of the Neutron Transport Equation (NTE) building on the work in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.00827v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.00827v2">arXiv:1809.00827v2</a>], [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1810.01779v4" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1810.01779v4">arXiv:1810.01779v4</a>] and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1901.00220v3" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.00220v3">arXiv:1901.00220v3</a>], which describes the flux of neutrons through inhomogeneous fissile medium. Our aim is to analyse existing and novel Monte Carlo (MC) algorithms, aimed at simulating the lead eigenvalue associated with the underlying model. This quantity is of principal importance in the nuclear regulatory industry for which the NTE must be solved on complicated inhomogenous domains corresponding to nuclear reactor cores, irradiative hospital equipment, food irradiation equipment and so on. We include a complexity analysis of such MC algorithms, noting that no such undertaking has previously appeared in the literature. The new MC algorithms offer a variety of advantages and disadvantages of accuracy vs cost, as well as the possibility of more convenient computational parallelisation.

Abstract:Monte Carlo method is very attractive for high fidelity simulations of nuclear reactors. However, real nuclear reactors are complex systems with multi-physics interacting and coupling. In order to perform the high fidelity multi-physics simulations of real reactors, many advanced methods and capabilities must be developed in new generation Monte Carlo codes, including on-the-fly temperature dependent cross sections treatment, neutronics/ thermal-hydraulics coupling, full-core detailed burnup calculation, critical searching, adjoint-weighted dynamic parameters calculations, equilibrium Xenon method,Monte Carlo refueling capacity, and restart capacity for burnup calculation. In this paper, these mentioned for multiple burnup cycles simulations in Hot Full power condition of PWR full core have been developed in RMC and applied to the two cycles burnup calculations of BEAVRS benchmark. The parameters given in BEAVRS benchmark were calculated and compared with the measured values of BEAVRS benchmark and results of MC21, which show good agreements. This work paves the way for Monte Carlo code in lifecycle simulations of nuclear reactor cores.

Abstract:In the Monte Carlo thermal-physical calculations for nuclear reactors, the precise and effective transfer of data between different meshes is a difficult issue of thermal and physical coupling. Converting two separate meshes and transferring the data is an exceptionally difficult and complex task within the conventional nuclear thermal-physics coupling approach. The newly developed Functional Expansion Tallies (FET) method can obtain the continuous distribution of parameters in the solution space. By applying FET method to nuclear thermal-physics coupling, the no-mesh continuous fission energy distribution can be obtained, which is suitable for more complex meshes. Additionally, the computational memory can be minimized by substituting the data from numerous mesh power distribution data points with the coefficients of the function.

Abstract:The design and safety analyses of current and future nuclear reactors require continuous improvement of computational accuracies. To this end, multi-physics approaches including detailed, coupled neutronic, thermal hydraulic, and fuel pin mechanic assessments are being increasingly used. In this work, we have studied the neutronic performance of a 3600 MWth oxide-fuelled sodium-cooled fast reactor core developed in the framework of the Euratom 7th Framework Programme Collaborative Project on European Sodium Fast Reactor. A new version of Monte Carlo neutron transport code (MCNP6) was used to evaluate a number of safety-relevant characteristics. These included the effective neutron multiplication factor and pin-by-pin power distribution in the ESFR core. As such, the peak power pin was identified and its axial power profile determined. These characteristics were evaluated both for the beginning of life as well as the end of cycle situations, explicitly taking into account changes in core material composition during burn-up. Obtained results will serve as an input to detailed safety assessments of fuel pin behavior in nominal and off-nominal conditions.

Abstract:Thermal-to-fusion neutron convertor has being studied in China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP). Current Monte Carlo codes, such as MCNP and GEANT, are inadequate when applied in this multi-step reactions problems. A Monte Carlo tool RSMC (Reaction Sequence Monte Carlo) has been developed to simulate such coupled problem, from neutron absorption, to charged particle ionization and secondary neutron generation. “Forced particle production” variance reduction technique has been implemented to improve the calculation speed distinctly by making deuteron/triton induced secondary product plays a major role. Nuclear data is handled from ENDF or TENDL, and stopping power from SRIM, which described better for low energy deuteron/triton interactions. As a validation, accelerator driven mono-energy 14MeV fusion neutron source is employed, which has been deeply studied and includes deuteron transport and secondary neutron generation. Various parameters, including fusion neutron angle distribution, average neutron energy at different emission directions, differential and integral energy distributions, are calculated with our tool and traditional deterministic method as references. As a result, we present the calculation results of convertor with RSMC, including conversion ratio of 1mm 6LiD with a typical thermal neutron (Maxwell spectrum) incidence, and fusion neutron spectrum, which will be used for our experiment.

Abstract:The shielding of research reactors is an important problem with deep penetration which requires a large amount of computing time. The Monte Carlo Neutron-Photo Code is used to analyze the shielding of research reactor with improved Monte Carlo sampling technique and a multi-step method. The method is especially useful for complex physical models with thick shielding and long particle penetration distances. Such difficult problems usually can not be analyzed with a single-step method, but the multi-step method coupled with the improved sampling technique gives higher precision result with an error less than 10% and relatively shorter computation times.

Abstract:Monte Carlo method can provide high fidelity neutronics analysis of different types of nuclear reactors, owing to its advantages of the flexible geometry modeling and the use of continuous-energy nuclear cross sections. However, nuclear reactors are complex systems with multi-physics interacting and coupling. MC codes can couple with depletion solver and thermal-hydraulics (T/H) codes simultaneously for the "transport-burnup-thermal-hydraulics" coupling calculations. MIT BEAVRS is a typical "trans port-burnup-thermal-hydraulics" coupling benchmark. In this paper, RMC was coupled with sub channel code COBRA, equipped with on-the-fly temperature-dependent cross section treatment and large-scale detailed burnup calculation based on domain decomposition. Then RMC was applied to the full core burnup calculations of BEAVRS benchmark in hot full power (HFP) condition. The numerical tests show that domain decomposition method can achieve the consistent results compared with original version of RMC while enlarging the computational burnup regions. The results of HFP by RMC agree well with the reference values of BEAVRS benchmark and also agree well with those of MC21. This work proves the feasibility and accuracy of RMC in multi-physics coupling and lifecycle simulations of nuclear reactors. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Monte Carlo Approach of Effective Delayed Neutron Fraction by k-Ratio Method with External Neutron Source

Abstract:In an accelerator-driven system (ADS), the effective delayed neutron fraction βeff is required for subcriticality measurements in order to convert measured reactivity in dollar units into pcm units. Here, an alternative calculation methodology with source-dependent reaction rates is proposed to estimate the subcriticality (pcm units) with an external neutron source for the newly defined parameter. In the proposed methodology, the parameter is obtained by the k-ratio method with reaction rates considering the external neutron source (fixed-source calculation) and is compared with that obtained by the eigenvalue calculations (MCNP6.1). To investigate its applicability to the estimation of subcriticality, subcriticality measurements by the extrapolated area ratio method are carried out in the experiments in ADS at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly, with the variation of subcriticality (pcm units) and the spectrum of the external neutron source. Then, is estimated by the proposed methodology with MCNPX-2.5.0. The measured subcriticality with the use of obtained by the fixed-source calculations shows good agreement with that obtained by the different measurement methodology and MCNPX-2.5.0. Through the subcriticality estimation, the applicability of the proposed methodology is confirmed for different subcriticality levels and the spectrum of the external neutron source.
