Abstract:For a graph $G$ with the vertex set $V(G)$ and the edge set $E(G)$ and a star subgraph $S$ of $G$, let $\alpha_S(G)$ be the maximum number of vertices in $G$ such that no two of them are in the same star subgraph $S$ and $\theta_S(G)$ be the minimum number of star subgraph $S$ that cover the vertices of $G$. A graph $G$ is called $S$-perfect if for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, $\alpha_S(H)=\theta_S(H)$. Motivated by perfect graphs discovered by Berge, Ravindra introduced $S$-perfect graphs. In this paper we prove that a triangulated graph is $S$-perfect if and only if $G$ is odd sun-free. This result leads to a conjecture which if proved is a structural characterization of $S$-perfect graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs.

Ideal triangulations of 3-manifolds II: taut and angle structures

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers in which we investigate ideal triangulations of the interiors of compact 3-manifolds with tori or Klein bottle boundaries. Such triangulations have been used with great effect, following the pioneering work of Thurston. Ideal triangulations are the basis of the computer program SNAPPEA of Weeks and the program SNAP of Coulson, Goodman, Hodgson and Neumann. Casson has also written a program to find hyperbolic structures on such 3-manifolds, by solving Thurston's hyperbolic gluing equations for ideal triangulations. In this second paper, we study the question of when a taut ideal triangulation of an irreducible atoroidal 3-manifold admits a family of angle structures. We find a combinatorial obstruction, which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of angle structures for taut triangulations. The hope is that this result can be further developed to give a proof of the existence of ideal triangulations admitting (complete) hyperbolic metrics. Our main result answers a question of Lackenby. We give simple examples of taut ideal triangulations which do not admit an angle structure. Also we show that for `layered' ideal triangulations of once-punctured torus bundles over the circle, that if the manodromy is pseudo Anosov, then the triangulation admits angle structures if and only if there are no edges of degree 2. Layered triangulations are generalisations of Thurston's famous triangulation of the Figure 8 knot space. Note that existence of an angle structure easily implies that the 3-manifold has a CAT(0) or relatively word hyperbolic fundamental group.

On 4-critical t-perfect graphs

Abstract:It is an open question whether the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs is bounded by a constant. The largest known value for this parameter is 4, and the only example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph, due to Laurent and Seymour, is the complement of the line graph of the prism $\Pi$ (a graph is 4-critical if it has chromatic number 4 and all its proper induced subgraphs are 3-colorable). In this paper, we show a new example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph: the complement of the line graph of the 5-wheel $W_5$. Furthermore, we prove that these two examples are in fact the only 4-critical $t$-perfect graphs in the class of complements of line graphs. As a byproduct, an analogous and more general result is obtained for $h$-perfect graphs in this class. The class of $P_6$-free graphs is a proper superclass of complements of line graphs and appears as a natural candidate to further investigate the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs. We observe that a result of Randerath, Schiermeyer and Tewes implies that every $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graph is 4-colorable. Finally, we use results of Chudnovsky et al to show that $\overline{L(W_5)}$ and $\overline{L(\Pi)}$ are also the only 4-critical $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graphs.

Abstract:Perfect graphs form one of the distinguished classes of finite simple graphs. In 2006, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it has no odd holes and no odd antiholes as induced subgraphs, which was conjectured by Berge. We consider the class ${\mathcal A}$ of graphs that have no odd holes, no antiholes and no odd stretchers as induced subgraphs. In particular, every graph belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ is perfect. Everett and Reed conjectured that a graph belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if it is perfectly contractile. In the present paper, we discuss graphs belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. In fact, we conjecture that a perfect graph $G$ belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if the toric ideal of the stable set polytope of $G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. Especially, we show that this conjecture is true for Meyniel graphs, perfectly orderable graphs, and clique separable graphs, which are perfectly contractile graphs.

Perfect t-embeddings and Lozenge Tilings

Abstract:We construct perfect t-embeddings for regular hexagons of the hexagonal lattice, providing the first example, and hence proving existence, for graphs with an outer face of degree greater than four. The construction is in terms of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and relies only on symmetries of the graph. Using known formulas for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix, we derive exact contour integral formulas for these embeddings and their origami maps. Through steepest descent analysis, we establish scaling limits, proving convergence of origami maps to a maximal surface in the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, and we verify structural rigidity conditions, leading to a new proof of convergence of height fluctuations to the Gaussian free field.

Perfect precise colorings of plane semiregular tilings

Abstract:A coloring of a planar semiregular tiling $\mathcal{T}$ is an assignment of a unique color to each tile of $\mathcal{T}$. If $G$ is the symmetry group of $\mathcal{T}$, we say that the coloring is perfect if every element of $G$ induces a permutation on the finite set of colors. If $\mathcal{T}$ is $k$-valent, then a coloring of $\mathcal{T}$ with $k$ colors is said to be precise if no two tiles of $\mathcal{T}$ sharing the same vertex have the same color. In this work, we obtain perfect precise colorings of some families of $k$-valent semiregular tilings in the plane, where $k\leq 6$.

Sufficient conditions for perfect mixed tilings

Abstract:We develop a method to study sufficient conditions for perfect mixed tilings. Our framework allows the embedding of bounded degree graphs $H$ with components of sublinear order. As a corollary, we recover and extend the work of Kühn and Osthus regarding sufficient minimum degree conditions for perfect $F$-tilings (for an arbitrary fixed graph $F$) by replacing the $F$-tiling with the aforementioned graphs $H$. Moreover, we obtain analogous results for degree sequences and in the setting of uniformly dense graphs. Finally, we asymptotically resolve a conjecture of Komlós in a strong sense.

Spanning $H$-subdivisions and perfect $H$-subdivision tilings in dense digraphs

Abstract:Given a digraph $H$, we say a digraph $H^\prime$ is an $H$-subdivision if $H^\prime$ is obtained from $H$ by replacing one or more arcs from $H$ with internally vertex-disjoint path(s). In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $h$ arcs and no isolated vertices, there is a constant $C_0>0$ such that the following hold. $(1)$ For any integer $C\geq C_0$ and every digraph $D$ on $n\geq Ch$ vertices, if the minimum in- and out-degree of $D$ is at least $n/2$, then it contains an $H$-subdivision covering all vertices of $D$. $(2)$ For any integer partition $n=n_1+\cdots+n_m$ such that the sum of the $n_i$ less than $\alpha n$ is no more than $\beta n$, if a digraph $D$ has the order $n\geq Cm$ and the minimum in- and out-degree at least $\sum_{i=1}^m\lceil\frac{n_i}{2}\rceil$, then it contains $m$ disjoint $H$-subdivisions, where the order of these $H$-subdivisions is $n_1, \ldots, n_m$, respectively. The result of $(1)$ settles the conjecture raised by Pavez-Singé \cite{Pavez} in a stronger form, and ameliorate the result of Lee \cite{Lee}. Also, the conclusion of $(2)$ partly answers of the conjecture of Lee \cite{Lee1} and generalizes the recent work of Lee \cite{Lee1}.

Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.

Abstract:We develop a theory of perfect algebraic spaces that extend the so-called perfect schemes to the setting of algebraic spaces. We prove several desired properties of perfect algebraic spaces. This extends some previous results of perfect schemes, including the recent one developed by Bertapelle et al. in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1611.02060" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.02060">arXiv:1611.02060</a>. Moreover, our theory extends the previous one developed by Xinwen Zhu in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1407.8519" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.8519">arXiv:1407.8519</a>. The perfect morphisms will provide equivalent descriptions to perfect algebraic spaces. Our method to define perfect algebraic spaces differs from all previous approaches, as we utilize representability of functors. There is a natural notion of algebraic Frobenius morphisms of algebraic spaces, which is analogous to the absolute Frobenius morphisms of schemes. In terms of algebraic Frobenius morphisms, one can define perfection of an algebraic space.

Perfect Matching Complexes of Polygonal Line Tiling

Abstract:The perfect matching complex of a simple graph G is a simplicial complex having facets (maximal faces) as the perfect matchings of G. This article discusses the perfect matching complex of polygonal line tiling and the $\left(2 \times n\right)$-grid graph in particular. We use tools from discrete Morse theory to show that the perfect matching complex of any polygonal line tiling is either contractible or homotopically equivalent to a wedge of spheres. While proving our results, we also characterise all the matchings that can not be extended to form a perfect matching.

Abstract:We introduce and study a three-folded linear operator depending on three parameters that has associated a triangular number tilling of the plane. As a result the set of all triples of integers is decomposed in classes of equivalence organized in four towers of two-dimensional triangulations. We provide the full characterization of the represented integers belonging to each network as families of certain quadratic forms. We note that one of the towers is generated by a germ that produces a covering of the plane with {Löschian} numbers.

Perfect colorings of hypergraphs

Abstract:Perfect colorings (equitable partitions) of graphs are extensively studied, while the same concept for hypergraphs attracts much less attention. The aim of this paper is to develop basic notions and properties of perfect colorings for hypergraphs. Firstly, we introduce a multidimensional matrix equation for perfect colorings of hypergraphs and compare this definition with a standard approach based on the incidence graph. Next, we show that the eigenvalues of the parameter matrix of a perfect coloring are eigenvalues of the multidimensional adjacency matrix of a hypergraph. We consider coverings of hypergraphs as a special case of perfect colorings and prove a theorem on the existence of a common covering of two hypergraphs. As an example, we show that a $k$-transversal in a hypergraph corresponds to a perfect coloring and calculate its parameters. At last, we find all perfect $2$-colorings of the Fano's plane hypergraph and compute some eigenvalues of this hypergraph.

Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hy-perbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separa-bility of peripheral subgroups. Epstein and Penner [2] used a convex hull construction in Lorentzian space to show that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a canonical subdivision into convex geodesic polyhedra all of whose vertices lie on the sphere at infinity of hyperbolic space. In general, one cannot expect to further subdivide these polyhedra into ideal geodesic simplices such that the result is an ideal triangulation. That this is possible after lifting the cell decomposition to an appropriate finite cover is the first main result of this paper. A cell decomposition of a hyperbolic n–manifold into ideal geodesic n–simplices all of which are embedded will be referred to as an embedded geodesic ideal triangulation. Theorem 1 Any non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite regular cover which admits an embedded geodesic ideal triangulation. The study of geodesic ideal triangulations of hyperbolic 3–manifolds goes back to Thurston [11]. They are known to have nice properties through, for instance, work by Neumann and Zagier [8] and Choi [1]. Petronio and Porti [9] discuss the question of whether every non-compact hyperbolic 3–manifold of finite volume has a geodesic ideal triangulation — this question still remains unanswered. Kojima [5] extended the construction by Epstein and Penner to obtain a canonical decomposition into partially truncated polyhedra of any hyperbolic manifold with totally geodesic boundary components. A cell decomposition of a hyperbolic n–manifold with totally geodesic boundary into geodesic partially truncated n–simplices all of which are embedded will be referred to as an embedded geodesic partially truncated triangulation. Theorem 2 Any finite-volume hyperbolic manifold with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which admits an embedded geodesic partially truncated triangulation. Abstract:For a lattice $L$ of $R^n$, a sphere $S(c,r)$ of center $c$ and radius $r$ is called {\em empty} if for any $v\in L$ we have $\Vert v - c\Vert \geq r$. Then the set $S(c,r)\cap L$ is the vertex set of a {\em Delaunay polytope} $P=conv(S(c,r)\cap L)$. A Delaunay polytope is called {\em perfect} if any affine transformation $\phi$ such that $\phi(P)$ is a Delaunay polytope is necessarily an isometry of the space composed with an homothety. Perfect Delaunay polytopes are remarkable structure that exist only if $n=1$ or $n\geq 6$ and they have shown up recently in covering maxima studies. Here we give a general algorithm for their enumeration that relies on the Erdahl cone. We apply this algorithm in dimension 7 which allow us to find that there are only two perfect Delaunay polytopes: $3_{21}$ which is a Delaunay polytope in the root lattice $\mathsf{E}_7$ and the Erdahl Rybnikov polytope. We then use this classification in order to get the list of all types Delaunay simplices in dimension 7 and found 11 types.

Abstract:This article presents the formal proof of correctness for a plane Delaunay triangulation algorithm. It consists in repeating a sequence of edge flippings from an initial triangulation until the Delaunay property is achieved. To describe triangulations, we rely on a combinatorial hypermap specification framework we have been developing for years. We embed hypermaps in the plane by attaching coordinates to elements in a consistent way. We then describe what are legal and illegal Delaunay edges and a flipping operation which we show preserves hypermap, triangulation, and embedding invariants. To prove the termination of the algorithm, we use a generic approach expressing that any non-cyclic relation is well-founded when working on a finite set.

Hypertangency of plane curves and the algebraic exceptional set

Abstract:We investigate plane curves intersecting in at most two unibranched points to study the algebraic exceptional set appearing in standard conjectures of diophantine and hyperbolic geometry. Our first result compares the local geometry of two hypertangent curves, i.e. curves having maximal contact at one unibranched point. This is applied to fully describe the exceptional set and, more generally, the hyper-bitangency set, of a plane curve with three components.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and let $A_G$ be the clique-vertex incidence matrix of $G$. It is well known that $G$ is perfect iff the system $A_{_G}\mathbf x\le \mathbf 1$, $\mathbf x\ge\mathbf0$ is totally dual integral (TDI). In 1982, Cameron and Edmonds proposed to call $G$ box-perfect if the system $A_{_G}\mathbf x\le \mathbf 1$, $\mathbf x\ge\mathbf0$ is box-totally dual integral (box-TDI), and posed the problem of characterizing such graphs. In this paper we prove the Cameron-Edmonds conjecture on box-perfectness of parity graphs, and identify several other classes of box-perfect graphs. We also develop a general and powerful method for establishing box-perfectness.

Abstract:Let $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ be an infinite sequence of families of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. An infinite sequence of compact connected sets $\left\{ B_{n} \right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is called heterochromatic sequence from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ if there exists an infinite sequence $\left\{ i_{n} \right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of natural numbers satisfying the following two properties: (a) $\{i_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is a monotonically increasing sequence, and (b) for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$, we have $B_{n} \in \mathcal{F}_{i_n}$. We show that if every heterochromatic sequence from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ contains $d+1$ sets that can be pierced by a single hyperplane then there exists a finite collection $\mathcal{H}$ of hyperplanes from $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ that pierces all but finitely many families from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$. As a direct consequence of our result, we get that if every countable subcollection from an infinite family $\mathcal{F}$ of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ contains $d+1$ sets that can be pierced by a single hyperplane then $\mathcal{F}$ can be pierced by finitely many hyperplanes. To establish the optimality of our result we show that, for all $d \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists an infinite sequence $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ of families of compact connected sets satisfying the following two conditions: (1) for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ is not pierceable by finitely many hyperplanes, and (2) for any $m \in \mathbb{N}$ and every sequence $\left\{B_n\right\}_{n=m}^{\infty}$ of compact connected sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $B_i\in\mathcal{F}_i$ for all $i \geq m$, there exists a hyperplane in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that pierces at least $d+1$ sets in the sequence.
