Abstract:The first part briefly describes different methods used in computational chemistry without going into exhaustive details of theory. Basic assumptions common to the majority of computational methods based on either quantum or statistical mechanics are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the limits of their applicability. The second part consists of a series of sections exemplifying the various, most important applications of computational chemistry. Molecular structures, modeling of various properties of molecules and chemical reactions are discussed. Both ground and excited state properties are covered in the gas phase as well as in solutions. Solid state materials and nanomaterials are described in part three. Amongst the topics covered are clusters, periodic structures, and nano-systems. Special emphasis is placed on the environmental effects of nanostructures. Part four is devoted to an important class of materials – biomolecules. It focuses on interesting models for biological systems that are studied by computational chemists. RNA, DNA, and proteins are discussed in detail. Examples are given for calculations of their properties and interactions. The role of solvents in biologically significant reactions is revealed, as well as the relationship between molecular structure and function of various classes of biomolecules. Part five features new bonus material devoted to Chemoinformatics. This area is vital for many applications of computational methods. The section includes a discussion of basic ideas such as molecular structure, molecular descriptors and chemical similarity. Additionally, QSAR techniques and screening methods are covered. Also, available open source chemoinformatics software is presented and discussed.

Abstract:Computational organic chemistry has become a valuable tool in the field of bioorthogonal chemistry, offering insights and aiding in the progression of this branch of chemistry. In this review, I present an overview of computational work in this field, including an exploration of both the primary computational analysis methods used and their application in the main areas of bioorthogonal chemistry: (3 + 2) and [4 + 2] cycloadditions. In the context of (3 + 2) cycloadditions, detailed studies of electronic effects have informed the evolution of cycloalkyne/1,3-dipole cycloadditions. Through computational techniques, researchers have found ways to adjust the electronic structure via hyperconjugation to enhance reactions without compromising stability. For [4 + 2] cycloadditions, methods such as distortion/interaction analysis and energy decomposition analysis have been beneficial, leading to the development of bioorthogonal reactants with improved reactivity and the creation of orthogonal reaction pairs. To conclude, I touch upon the emerging fields of cheminformatics and machine learning, which promise to play a role in future reaction discovery and optimization.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of chemical reactions, especially catalysis, has been an important and active area of computational organic chemistry, and close collaborations between experimentalists and theorists represent a growing trend. This Perspective provides examples of such productive collaborations. The understanding of various reaction mechanisms and the insight gained from these studies are emphasized. The applications of various experimental techniques in elucidation of reaction details as well as the development of various computational techniques to meet the demand of emerging synthetic methods, e.g., C-H activation, organocatalysis, and single electron transfer, are presented along with some conventional developments of mechanistic aspects. Examples of applications are selected to demonstrate the advantages and limitations of these techniques. Some challenges in the mechanistic studies and predictions of reactions are also analyzed.

Abstract:Advances in software and hardware have promoted the use of computational chemistry in all branches of chemical research to probe important chemical concepts and to support experimentation. Consequently, it has become imperative that students in the modern undergraduate curriculum become adept at performing simple calculations using computational software, interpreting computational data, and applying computational data to explain chemical phenomena. We utilize computational chemistry in a high-enrollment (>1200 students/year), undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory course in a manner similar to that of organic chemistry researchers. We have employed WebMO as a web-based, easy-to-use, and free front-end interface for Gaussian09 that allows our students to complete ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the curriculum. Rather than an isolated exposure to computational chemistry, our students use computational chemistry to obtain a deeper understanding of their experimental work throughout the entire semester. By integrating calculations into the curriculum, the focus moves away from performing the calculations to providing insight into chemical phenomena and understanding experimental results. We provide here both an overview of the introductory laboratory experiment and our integrated approach.

Abstract:In all fields of chemistry, it has become essential to use quantum chemical calculations and machine learning for explaining and predicting chemical phenomena. However, it is challenging to apply textbook knowledge to practical research. In this study, we developed teaching material based on computational chemistry to promote the integration of knowledge from all fields of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, to bridge the gap between classroom learning and chemistry research. This experimental material, which comprehensively covers weak intermolecular interactions and chemical reactions, is expected to help students conduct purposeful research activities after being assigned to a laboratory.

Abstract:The main content of Organic Chemistry wrote by Prof David R.Klein was translated.There were 27 chapters in the book, which was still in accordance with the arrangement of traditional functional groups classification, but the emphasis was the introduction of the mechanism.Chapter 6 was devoted to the Chemical Reactivity and Mechanisms, and Chapter 12 introduced Synthesis.Review of Concepts, Vocabulary and Key Terminology were prensented after every chapter.It would be useful to teaching summary and to review of study.The exercises in the middle of the chapter and the three types of exercises were the further study of the knowledge, hoped to provide some arrangement reference for the textbook content to the domestic university.

Abstract:Many of the principles of organic polymer chemistry are direct extensions of the information contained in the standard introductory organic chemistry course. Often, however, the discussion of macromolecules is relegated to a chapter at the end of the organic chemistry text and is covered briefly, if at all. Connecting the organic-chemical principles of macromolecules to those of small molecules at the time these principles are first presented demonstrates some of the practical implications of organic chemistry, including medical applications. Making these connections can serve as a motivator to many students who are interested in medical applications of organic chemistry. Several examples of how macromolecular principles can be distributed throughout an introductory organic chemistry course to connect basic concepts to everyday life are discussed.
