Abstract:Transportation of heavy crude oil (HCO) through pipelines is difficult due to its high viscosity. Transportation of viscous crude oil as concentrated oil‐in‐water (O/W) emulsion is believed to be one of the most favourable ones. In the present study, the emulsion has been prepared at different concentrations of polyoxyethylene (5) sorbitan monooleate (PS‐81) to study their flow characteristics through a horizontal pipeline. Laminar flow of HCO and prepared emulsions, with 75%v/v HCO and 25%v/v water, have been simulated using Ansys Fluent 2019 R3 to study the effect of various parameters like temperature, volumetric flow rate, surfactant concentration on pressure drop, dynamic viscosity, hydrodynamic entrance length, flow behaviour index, consistency index and pumping power requirement. Laminar flow of emulsion has been simulated using a two‐phase mixture flow model considering emulsion as a pseudo homogeneous mixture, while the flow of HCO has been simulated as viscous laminar flow. Flow behaviour index (n) and consistency index (k) have been predicted from experimental viscosity data. These values have been used to predict pressure drop and hence pumping power requirements. Emulsion pressure drop and pumping power requirement are found to be in the range of 5818 to 11737 Pa and 0.00247 to 0.00498 hp, respectively, for volumetric flow rate range of 0.9 to 3.64 m3/h.
