Abstract:This study evaluated the status of coral communities at the fringing reefs in the northern South China Sea, and their potential role in maintaining nearby coastline stability of northeastern Hainan Island (Puqian Bay, Hainan Bay). Thirty-nine coral species were recorded with mean coral cover of 5.3%, and are dominated by massive Galaxea, Platygyra and Porites. The coral communities were clustered into two groups (Clu-HNB and Clu-PQB) corresponding to different stable coastal conditions. Coral communities at the Hainan Bay with higher diversity and greater cover corresponded to relatively stable coastline, whereas those at the southern Puqian Bay (with the lowest coral diversity and spatial coverage) corresponded to severe coastline erosion. This work provides some direct evidence that declined coral reefs would weaken their functions to maintain a stable coastline, resulting in severe coastal erosion. It is also useful to help coastal managers and local people pay more attention to the importance of coral reefs in coastal protection and encourage them to change their ways to get sustainable use of coral reef resources. It may be beneficial to inspire or initiate coastal engineering to manage coasts with natural coral reef solution.
Carbon pool and financing mechanism of coastal blue carbon ecosystems

Abstract:Climate change has become one of the severe challenges faced by all countries. Carbon neutralization, through "carbon emission reduction" and "carbon sink increase", is a key way to address global climate change. Coastal blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves, salt marshes and seagrass beds, are huge and long-term sustainable carbon sinks. Therefore, protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems is one of the operable ways to increase carbon sinks. This paper explored the carbon pool and economic value of typical coastal blue carbon ecosystems in China. Two restored wetlands（Niyu mangrove and Yingwuzhou salt marsh）as examples are used to prove that increasing blue carbon by coastal ecosystems restoration is an effective way to realize carbon neutralization. The research results can provide theoretical basis and data support for coastal ecosystem restoration and the blue carbon trading, and further serve carbon neutralization.
Mapping the seagrass conservation and restoration priorities: Coupling habitat suitability and anthropogenic pressures

Abstract:Seagrass meadows provide important ecosystem services, but are among the least conserved marine ecosystems. The Southern bioregion of China has the nation's largest seagrass distribution. However, lack of information on the distribution of seagrasses and the threats they face pose a significant obstacle to their conservation and restoration. Accordingly, a framework for prioritizing conservation and restoration objectives was proposed in the present study. First, we modeled the suitable habitats with MaxEnt, random forest (RF), and ensemble models to obtain a reliable basis map of seagrass distribution. A potentially suitable area of approximately 3,536–4,852 km2 was mapped in the coastal sea of South China, with the greatest area occurring between 18 °N and 22 °N. The anthropogenic pressures on the seagrass habitat were then estimated using an integrated exposure index consisting of four indicators, namely, population density, fishery economy, aquaculture, and shipping. The results indicated 48% of the coastal seas were under intensive anthropogenic pressures, with a higher exposure in the north than the south. The current conservation status suggests that there is a large seagrass conservation gap. By coupling the two dimensions of habitat suitability and integrated exposure, priority sites for seagrass management in South China were identified for the first time. Our work will not only provide basic information for coastal ecosystem management, but also serve as a tool to support the conservation and restoration planning of seagrass, thus, ultimately promoting the sustainability of seagrasses habitats.

Abstract:The global marine ecosystem has been significantly altered by the combined effects of multiple anthropogenic impacts. Systematic planning of marine protected areas (MPAs) is of paramount importance in alleviating conflicts between humans and the sea. Existing approaches, however, merely integrate both ecological and anthropogenic factors for multiple conservation purposes. By combining the three main anthropogenic impact factors with two main ecological importance factors, this study used a GIS-based AHP-OWA method to identify different levels of priority protection for MPAs in Zhejiang, China. Our results proved that: 1) the multi-objective MPA siting issues can be addressed by the GIS-based AHP-OWA method through scenario simulation; 2) the best locations for MPAs are in the northeast, central, and southern marine areas of Zhejiang; 3) considering the trade-off degree, spatial conservation efficiency, and spatial heterogeneity, an optimized MPA siting scheme can be developed for decision-makers. The proposed MPA siting method and case study may provide an effective technical reference for solving regional marine spatial planning (MSP) issues in the future.

Abstract:A survey of national and international publications during the past decade (2010-2019) in China was done searching Web-of-Science and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), including doctoral and masters' thesis from Chinese universities. The funding of seagrass research has increased during the past decade in China and this is reflected in the number of publications with an increase in the annual publication rate of 19.5 during this period. The research during the last decade was more diverse compared to previous ones and reflected topics and trends in the international literature, although most studies addressed structure (descriptive approach) and less functions and dynamics (experimental approach) in seagrass meadows. Publications particularly in the fields of impacts on seagrass ecosystems and on restoration projects have increased, also application of new molecular methodologies, and more recently their role as Blue Carbon ecosystems were important fields of interest in China. Seagrass meadows are generally diverse in China and have the same important ecosystem services as elsewhere. There is a general concern on the impact of human pressure on seagrass meadows due to observations of degraded ecosystems in both the South (subtropical and tropical) and the North (temperate) region.

Abstract:Overexploitation of reef resources and increasing coastal tourism have severely damaged the health of coral reef ecosystems around Hainan Island, South China. Only some reef sites are protected, and the effectiveness of the marine protected areas (MPA) appears inadequate. Networks of MPAs have been widely proposed as a more effective tool for reef conservation. However, little is known about the overall state of the island's coral reefs, and no guidelines exist for MPA network building in China. In this study, the information currently available on the distribution and condition of Hainan's coral reefs is comprehensively used to assess reef status, and to identify other reef areas prior to protection. An MPA network around the island is proposed in terms of monitoring, legal, and management aspects to improve the conservation effectiveness. This could also serve as a model for developing MPA networks for other coastal areas with respect to coral reef conservation.

Abstract:Seagrass beds are highly productive coastal ecosystems that are widely distributed along temperate and tropical coastlines globally. Although seagrass distribution and diversity have been widely reported on a global scale, there have been few reports on seagrass distribution and diversity in northern China, especially for coastal waters of the Liaodong Peninsula in the North Yellow Sea. In the present study, we investigated the distribution and diversity of seagrass in coastal waters of the Liaodong Peninsula in the North Yellow Sea, northern China. Field surveys of seagrass wrack were conducted along shorelines, to identify whether seagrass beds occurred in nearby waters, and sonar methods were then used to collect data relating to seagrass bed extent. Also, we analyzed the major threats facing seagrass beds. The results of the study revealed that four species (Zostera marina L., Z. japonica Aschers. & Graebn., Z. caespitosa M., and Phyllospadix iwatensis M.) were found in study area, covering a total area of 1253.47 ha. Seagrass bed area significantly decreased with increasing water depth, and most seagrass was recorded at depths of 2–5 m. Due to the steep slope of the seabed, seagrass beds exhibited a zonal distribution in most of the study areas. In addition, the amount of seagrass wrack along shorelines could be used to infer the size and distance of seagrass beds. Human activities, such as clam harvesting, land reclamation, coastal aquaculture pose a threat to the seagrass beds. This study provides new information to fill knowledge gaps regarding seagrass distribution in northern China and it provides a baseline for further monitoring of these seagrass beds.

Abstract:Seagrass beds are recognized as pivotal and among the most vulnerable coastal marine ecosystems globally. The eelgrass Zostera marina L. is the most widely distributed seagrass species and dominates the temperate northern hemisphere. However, an alarming decline in seagrass has been occurring worldwide due to multiple stressors. Seagrass meadow degradation is particularly serious in the Bohai Sea, in temperate China; however, large areas (> 500 ha) of seagrass meadows and population recruitment have rarely been reported in this area. In the present study, we report on a large eelgrass bed in a eutrophic bay of the Bohai Sea. Sonar and field survey methods were used to investigate the distribution of seagrass and its population recruitment. We also analyzed the major threats to this large seagrass bed. Results showed that a large Z. marina bed with an area of 694.36 ha occurred in this area of the Bohai Sea, with a peripheral area of ~25 km2. Seagrass canopy height and plant coverage had a significant correlation with water depth. Asexual reproduction principally occurred in autumn and played a dominant role in population recruitment in vegetated areas, where no seedlings successfully colonized. In contrast, a considerable number of seedlings survived in the seagrass meadow gaps, and thus played a critical role in the recruitment in these areas. The maximum reproductive shoot densities were about 100 and 70 shoots m−2 at sampling site (S)-1 and S-2 in 2018, respectively, which was about two times more than in 2019 (50 and 20 reproductive shoots m−2 at S-1 and S-2, respectively). The potential seed output per unit area in 2019 was about 1020 seeds m−2 at S-1 and 830 seeds m−2 at S-2, and the seed output in the study area was at a low level compared with global values. Overall, high spring and summer water temperature appeared to induce sexual reproduction of Z. marina in the study area, including reproductive effort, reproductive investment, and seedling development. Furthermore, eelgrass height, aboveground biomass, and density were significantly related to water temperature. Among the potential threatening factors to seagrass in this area, the activities of clam harvesting were intense with daily clam catches >2000 kg, leading to patchy seagrass meadows, especially in the fringe areas. The seagrass bed was also threatened by marine pollution (nutrient loading) and land reclamation. Therefore, the protection and restoration of this seagrass bed are strongly recommended. Our study will provide fundamental information for the conservation and management strategies of large eelgrass beds in the Bohai Sea.

Abstract:Seagrass meadows are virtual blue carbon ecosystems facing a dramatic decline on a global scale. Tracking the status and trends of seagrass meadows, which is still pending on large scales, is an emerging priority for their conservation and restoration. Here, we develop a semi-automatic procedure to identify and map seagrass meadows. Using Sentinel-2 data in Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, a map is generated, showing a total of 11113.4 ha of seagrass meadows in coastal China in 2020. There exists the largest extent (6450.3 ha) in the coast of the South China Sea, while the second area (3909.5 ha) is in the Yellow Sea-Bohai Sea, and the seagrass meadows in the East China Sea cover about 753.6 ha. Our results provide the baseline data of seagrass meadows distribution in coastal China, and this study can be of reference for mapping seagrass meadows on a broader or even global scale.

Abstract:Seagrass plays an important role in global coastal ecosystems but is among the least conserved marine ecosystems. The Northern Chinese Seas have abundant seagrasses. However, the limited information on their distribution and habitat suitability has hindered seagrass conservation and restoration in this area. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was developed to study the distribution and habitat suitability of seagrasses. First, the model was developed using seagrass occurrence points and environmental variables data. The predictions were visualized using ArcGIS to create a map of potential seagrass distribution. Next, the Jackknife analysis tool and contribution rate were used to identify and quantify the dominant environmental variables. The predictions were analyzed to quantify the suitable range of the dominant environmental variables and determine the conditions for seagrass habitat suitability in the study area. Finally, the predictions were re-analyzed. By coupling the previous predictions and re-analysis results, the areas and suggestions for seagrass conservation and restoration were identified and recommended. The results indicated the predictions of the model were highly reliable, with a total potential seagrasses distribution area was 3,296.47 km 2 in the study area. The distance from the shore, transparency, substrate type, SST, and nitrate concentration were identified as the dominant environmental variables. Seagrasses habitat suitability was high in study area when the distance from the shore was < 210 m, the SST was around 11 ~ 25°C, the substrate type was sandy with high mud content, the substrate particle size was around 35 ~ 330 μm, the transparency was around 0.7 ~ 1.5 m, and the nitrate concentration was< 6.4 mol·m -3 . This was the first study in which seagrasses were investigated and predicted in the Northern Chinese Seas, and their potential distribution and suitable habitat conditions were assessed. Our work will not only provide fundamental information for coastal seagrass ecosystem management, but also serve as a method to support the conservation and restoration of seagrasses.

Abstract:Estuarine wetlands provide a wide range of ecosystem functions, including carbon storage, biodiversity maintenance, and shoreline protection, and have human recreational value. In recent years, over half of China's estuarine wetlands have been lost due to natural or anthropogenic stresses. Estuarine wetlands are facing great challenges regarding their protection, restoration and management. China's 18,436 km of coastline support nearly half of its human population and 45 of its 60 major cities. It sustains over 28,000 species, and processes the outflow from seven of its nine major rivers. Rapid economic development in China is a cause of coastal degradation. In an attempt to mitigate habitat loss, over 1000 coastal restoration projects have been conducted in China in the past few decades. Great achievements have been made in the wetland restoration projects. In the future, biological combined restoration technology will become increasingly popular in China.

Abstract:The ongoing degradation of seagrass and seaweed is of global concern. Comprehending the spatial distribution of these wetland vegetation types and the threats they face becomes critical for effective conservation and restoration efforts. In this study, we combined a species distribution model and geographical detector to propose a novel framework for mapping the distribution and disturbance of degraded coastal wetland vegetation in sparsely recorded areas and identifying conservation and restoration priorities. Guangxi is a province in China known for its extensive coastal wetland vegetation. In our study of Guangxi, habitats suitable for two degraded vegetation types, i.e., seagrass and seaweed, were mapped using the maximum entropy model; 669.44 km 2 of seagrass habitat and 929.69 km 2 of seaweed habitat were identified. The geographical detector model was used to analyze anthropogenic disturbance caused by four local disturbance factors: shoreline development, fisheries, waterways, and ports and anchorages. Shoreline development was identified as the disturbance factor with the strongest impact on potential habitats of both vegetation types. According to these findings, 48.40 %–64.23 % of the vegetation habitats suffered from high anthropogenic disturbance. Preexisting nature reserves had not effectively protected wetland vegetation from human disturbance. Based on the spatial pattern of vegetation habitat and comprehensive anthropogenic disturbance, conservation and restoration priorities for seagrasses and seaweeds covering an area of 302.26 km 2 were further mapped. Our results thus help improve wetland vegetation conservation by providing basic information, and they provide a tool to support site planning for seagrass and seaweed conservation and restoration.

Abstract:Blue Carbon (BC) strategy refers to the approaches that mitigate and adapt to climate change through the conservation and restoration of seagrass, saltmarsh and mangrove ecosystems and, in some BC programs, also through the expansion of seaweed aquaculture. The major losses of coastal habitats in combination with the commitments of China under the Paris Agreement provide unique opportunity and necessity to develop a strong Chinese BC program. Here, we (1) characterize China's BC habitats, examine their changes since 1950 along with the drivers of changes; (2) consider the expansion of seaweed aquaculture and how this may be managed to become an emerging BC resource in China, along with the engineering solutions required to enhance its potential; and (3) provide the rationale and elements for BC program in China. We find China currently has 1326–2149 km2 wild and 2–15 km2 created mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass habitats, while 9236–10059 km2 (77–87%) has been lost since 1950, mainly due to land reclamation. The current area of farmed seaweed habitat is 1252–1265 km2, which is close to the area of wild mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass habitats. We conclude that BC strategies have potentials yet to be fully developed in China, particularly through climate change adaptation benefits such as coastal protection and eco-environmental co-benefits of seaweed farming such as habitat creation for fish and other biota, alleviation of eutrophication, hypoxia and acidification, and the generation of direct and value added products with lower environmental impact relative to land-based production. On this basis, we provide a roadmap for BC strategies adjusted to the unique characteristics and capacities of China.

Abstract:Seaweeds are good bio-monitors of heavy metal pollution and have been included in European coastal monitoring programs. However, data for seaweed species in China are scarce or missing. In this study, we explored the potential of seaweeds as bio-monitor by screening the natural occurring seaweeds in the "Kingdom of seaweed and shellfish" at Dongtou Islands, the East China Sea. Totally, 12 seaweed species were collected from six sites, with richness following the sequence of Rhodophyta > Phaeophyta > Chlorophyta. The concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, As) in the seaweeds was determined, and the bioaccumulation coefficient was calculated. A combination of four seaweeds, Pachydictyon coriaceum, Gelidium divaricatum, Sargassum thunbergii, and Pterocladiella capillacea, were proposed as bio-monitors due to their high bioaccumulation capabilities of specific heavy metals in the East China Sea and hence hinted the importance of using seaweed community for monitoring of pollution rather than single species. Our results provide first-hand data for the selection of bio-monitor species for heavy metals in the East China Sea and contribute to selection of cosmopolitan bio-monitor communities over geographical large area, which will benefit the establishment of monitoring programs for coastal heavy metal contamination.
Spatio-temporal variation and drivers of blue carbon sequestration in Hainan Island, China

Abstract:Blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangrove, seagrass bed and salt marsh, have attracted increasing attention due to their remarkable capacity for efficient carbon sequestration. However, the current threat posed by human activities to these ecosystems necessitates the characterization of their changes and identification of the primary driving factors in order to facilitate the gradual restoration of blue carbon ecosystems. In this study, we present an analysis of the spatio-temporal characteristics and primary influencing factors governing carbon sequestration in mangrove and seagrass beds located in Hainan Island. The findings revealed a 40% decline in carbon sequestration by mangroves from 1976 to 2017, while seagrass beds exhibited a 13% decrease in carbon sequestering between 2009 and 2016. The decline in carbon sequestration was primarily concentrated in Wenchang city, with aquaculture and population growth identified as the primary driving factors. Despite the implementation of measures aimed at reducing aquaculture in Hainan Island to promote blue carbon sequestration over the past two decades, the resulting recovery remains insufficient in achieving macro-level goals for carbon sequestration. This study emphasizes the necessity of safeguarding blue carbon ecosystems in Hainan Island by effectively mitigating anthropogenic disturbances.

Abstract:Seagrass meadows play critical roles in supporting a high level of biodiversity but are continuously threatened by human activities, such as sea reclamation. In this study, we reported on a large seagrass (Zostera marina L.) meadow in Caofeidian shoal harbor in the Bohai Sea of northern China. We evaluated the environmental impact of sea reclamation activities using Landsat imagery (1974–2019) by mapping seagrass meadow distribution changes. ISODATA was adopted for the unsupervised classification and mapping of seagrass beds. The error matrix developed using the in situ data obtained from acoustic surveys for Landsat 8OLI image classification was 87.20% accurate. The maps showed rapidly increasing changes in seagrass meadows as the amount of reclaimed land increased. Some seagrass meadows experienced large-scale changes, and sea reclamation has been suggested as the main factor responsible for habitat loss, which results from physical damage, excessive sedimentation, and increased turbidity caused by reclamation. In addition, habitat degradation may have resulted from three storm surges induced by typhoons in 1992–1998. Fortunately, land reclamation, forming an artificial “longshore bar”, buffers seagrass meadows from wave actions, providing relatively sheltered conditions, which has allowed a large habitat increase since 2012. These were the largest eelgrass meadows (3,217.32 ha), with a peripheral area of ~100 km2, in the Bohai Sea of northern China in 2019. However, the existing largest eelgrass beds in China are threatened by trawling, clam harvesting (especially clam sucking), channel dredging, and culture pond construction. Our work will help coastal managers monitor the environmental impacts of reclamation activities on seagrass meadows on a large spatio-temporal scale and will also provide information for seagrass restoration using artificial “longshore bars”.

Abstract:Abstract Mangrove is a typical natural landscape with great ecological, social and economic functions and values, and should be highly valued and protected. However, in the past few decades, mangrove resources have suffered serious damage, and there are also many deficiencies in mangrove protection. Chinese mangroves, as an important part of the global mangroves, are of great research value. In the present study, the status and historical dynamic process of Chinese mangrove resources were investigated and discussed to illustrate the problems of resources from three aspects, including mangrove distribution, area and plant species. Based on field research, literature research and data analysis, it was revealed that Chinese mangroves are distributed in eight provinces and regions along the southeast coast with an area of 35,749.25 hm 2 , 38 species and 40 nature reserves. The protection situation and deficiencies were analyzed from the establishment and management of nature reserves. Based on the resource status and problems, reasonable strategies were proposed to protect and manage mangroves mainly from four aspects, including publicity and education, resources restoration and protection technology, legal system establishment, and comprehensive protection and management.

Abstract:The health of the world's oceans is intrinsically linked to the global climate and the well-being of humanity, which are under severe threats from human activities. Comprehensive strategies are urgently needed to protect marine environments and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. China is the largest seaweed producer, with an impressive share of over 50 % of the production of the global seaweed cultivation. This study traces the history of seaweed cultivation and illustrates the cases of important seaweed cultivation throughout China. Their profound contributions to ecological and economic benefits, as well as pivotal roles in advancing blue carbon and driving sustainable development, are unveiled. Seaweed cultivation in China has led to a significant reduction in CO 2 emission by 35.49–72.93 Tg from 2003 to 2021, through the sequestration of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon and the accumulation of sedimentary organic carbon, accounting for 17.43–35.72 % of the initially photosynthetically fixed carbon by seaweeds. As an innovative sustainable development model for a green and low-carbon economy, the theory of seaweed-based sustainable mariculture is proposed. Seaweed culture in China is a potential nature-based solution to tackle the marine environmental problems on a global scale. Seaweed cultivation mitigates global climate change, enhances carbon sequestration, reduces ocean acidification and hypoxia, as well as helps control eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. Therefore, it is proposed that large-scale seaweed cultivation be promoted in coastal countries for a sustainable future and that a paradigm be provided to establish the seaweed-based blue carbon economy worldwide.

Abstract:Coastal saltmarshes are key ecosystems with important ecological functions. Yet, they have experienced a widespread decline. Due to their importance, the conservation and restoration of saltmarshes are globally shared objectives, including China. Despite multiple local studies, nationwide information about saltmarshes in China is scarce. Thus, we used remote sensing to delineate the spatial distribution and areal extent of saltmarshes along coastal China and resolve their species composition. By interpreting 10 m spatial resolution Sentinel-2 images on Google Earth Engine, assisted with field survey and literature search, a total of 118 010 ha of saltmarshes were delineated in coastal China in 2019. Seven typical saltmarsh species were identified, with Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora, and Scirpus mariquater as dominant species, accounting for 95.5% of total saltmarsh extent, while Suaeda salsa, Tamarix chinensis, Cyperus malaccensis, and Sesuvium portulacastrum were present in limited abundance. The P. australis and exotic species S. alterniflora grow along almost all coastal provinces, but P. australis dominates in the north while S. alterniflora dominates in the middle part of coastal China. Suaeda salsa occurs mainly in the north and has suffered large losses. Tamarix chinensis is abundant in Shandong province, S. mariquater in the Yangtze River delta, C. malaccensis in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and S. portulacastrum in Taiwan. The exotic species S. alterniflora expanded extensively along the coast and its expansion rate continues to increase. The results provided conform a much-needed baseline for future monitoring efforts and the assessmen- of progress in the conservation and restoration projects toward recovering saltmarshes in China.
