Abstract:Climate change has become one of the severe challenges faced by all countries. Carbon neutralization, through "carbon emission reduction" and "carbon sink increase", is a key way to address global climate change. Coastal blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves, salt marshes and seagrass beds, are huge and long-term sustainable carbon sinks. Therefore, protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems is one of the operable ways to increase carbon sinks. This paper explored the carbon pool and economic value of typical coastal blue carbon ecosystems in China. Two restored wetlands（Niyu mangrove and Yingwuzhou salt marsh）as examples are used to prove that increasing blue carbon by coastal ecosystems restoration is an effective way to realize carbon neutralization. The research results can provide theoretical basis and data support for coastal ecosystem restoration and the blue carbon trading, and further serve carbon neutralization.
Spatial Patterns and Driving Factors of Carbon Stocks in Mangrove Forests on Hainan Island, China

Abstract:Aim Mangrove forests are important coastal wetlands for the blue carbon budget and play a significant role in mitigating global climate change. However, spatial patterns of carbon stocks in mangrove forests on an island scale have not been quantified owing to methodological limitations and lack of understanding of controlling factors. We took the entire Hainan Island as a case study and aimed to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the spatial patterns and driving factors of carbon stocks in mangrove forests. Location Southern China. Time period 2017-2020. Major taxa studied Mangrove forest. Methods The upscaling method combined with field surveys and Sentinel-2 imagery analysis were used to compare different models for optimization of mangrove ecosystem carbon stock estimations. We also used structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the factors driving the distributional patterns of mangrove carbon stocks on an island scale. Results The current total mangrove carbon stock of the entire Hainan Island was estimated to be 703,181 Mg C (with a mean density of 192 Mg C/ha), with the above- and below-ground carbon stocks averaging at 44.7 and 147.3 Mg C/ha, respectively. The mangrove carbon storage in the north-eastern region of the island was the highest and in the west region the lowest. Sediment nitrogen content and plant species diversity had the most positive driving effects on the distribution of total carbon stock for Hainan Island mangroves. Main conclusions The combination of field surveys and Sentinel-2 imagery analysis can be applied to regional-scale estimations of carbon stocks for mangrove forests. Spatial pattens of mangrove carbon stocks vary among locations on Hainan Island, and soil nutrient (especially nitrogen) availability is the dominant factor regulating carbon stock variations along the land-to-sea gradient. Our findings have significant implications for better understanding the distribution of mangrove carbon stocks and quantification of the global blue carbon budget.

Abstract:Coastal blue carbon ecosystems can efficiently sequester carbon, which has the potential to mitigate increases in atmospheric CO 2 concentration. In this paper, we analyzed the C sequestration potential of blue carbon ecosystems—mangroves, seagrass meadows, and saltmarshes—on Chinese coasts based on the existing literature and data and reviewed why these ecosystems have high sequestration rates. Our results showed that Chinese coastal blue carbon ecosystems could bury 0.349–0.835 Tg carbon annually over a total habitat area of 1623–3850 km 2 . However, the blue carbon ecosystems of China are rapidly degrading because of human activities such as land reclamation, environmental pollution, resource overexploitation, and climate change (particularly sea level rise). Therefore, conservation and restoration actions are urgently needed to develop, maintain, and enhance the sequestration potentials of these blue carbon ecosystems. Abstract:The role of mangroves in carbon sequestration is critical in mitigating climate change. For better identifying the carbon conservation hotspots of mangroves influenced by environmental factors, the spatial distribution and driving mechanisms of mangrove vegetation and soil carbon sequestration, as well as the future carbon dynamics of mangroves, required clarification. Firstly, we assessed the spatial pattern of vegetation biomass and soil depth-varied soil total organic carbon (TOC) in Xiaoguansha, Guangxi Province of China, and its relationships with duration of inundation (DTI) were explored. Additionally, the carbon storage capacity of adjacent mangrove tidal flats as potential carbon reservoirs was quantified. Thirdly, freshwater, and nutrient inputs, biotic factors of mangrove, and soil composition were selected as impact factors, and their mechanisms in carbon sequestration were elucidated by using Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). Finally, medium values of environmental factors on mangrove carbon sequestration were revealed, based on which future loss and gain patterns of carbon sequestration under the combined effects were fully discussed. The results showed that: (1) The Above-ground biomass (AGB) and TOC densities were 32.89 Mg C/ha and 185.10 Mg C/ha in the study area, and both were enriched in the Interior areas. The carbon sequestration in the tidal flats was equivalented to >1/5 of total carbon sequestration of mangroves. (2) DTI was the most critical factor affecting the carbon sequestration pattern and was found to be positive correlated with AGB and TOC via changing soil contents (SC), whereas it exhibits a negative correlation with AGB and TOC through influencing canopy density (CD). CD and TP were identified as significant predictors. (3) Median analysis indicated that future carbon 'gain' area will move nearshore, whereas the carbon-rich intertidal area may undergo carbon loss. This study provided new insights and scientific understanding for management of mangrove blue carbon function.

Abstract:Seagrass beds are considered to be substantial sinks of "blue carbon". However, differentiation in the carbon sink capacities of seagrass beds in different regions with distinct nutrient conditions remains unclear. In this study, sediment carbon stocks, seagrass biomass, and microbial community structures and potential functions of seagrass beds in eutrophic seawater adjacent to Hainan Island and oligotrophic seawater around the Xisha Islands were compared. Our results showed that sediment mineralizable organic carbon and dry bulk density were substantially higher on Hainan Island than on the Xisha Islands (t-test, p 0.05). Similarly, seagrass biomass was much higher on Hainan Island (p < 0.05). Sediment carbon stocks positively correlated with sediment nitrogen and negatively correlated to sediment pH and grain size (p < 0.05). Bacterial diversities were similar in the two regions, while fungi were more diverse on Hainan Island (p < 0.05). Proteobacteria, Desulfobacterota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota could account for degrading organic carbon on Hainan Island. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota may contribute primarily to carbon loss in the seagrass beds of the Xisha Islands. This study strengthens our understanding of the effects of human activities on carbon sequestration in seagrass bed ecosystems.

Abstract:As the world's largest reactive carbon reservoir, the ocean plays a critical role in global climate change. Among coastal plant ecosystems, mangroves have the highest carbon storage efficiency and are prone to the impact of anthropogenic activities. In this study, taking the mangrove wetland of Qinglan Bay as an example, we extracted information on mangrove coastal surface change from 1988 to 2020 based on multi-temporal Landsat remote sensing data through field ground surveys and laboratory analysis and used the InVEST model to calculate the spatial and temporal structure of blue carbon in the mangrove area to investigate the effects of mangrove change in an ecological restoration context. The result shows that the overall area of mangrove forests exhibited a decreasing trend from 1988 to 2020, and the area of mangroves decreased from 1559.34 ha to 737.37 ha of which 52.71% was transformed into aquiculture, construction, and farm land. Accordingly, the mangrove carbon sinks from 1988 to 2020 were significantly reduced and the carbon stock decreased at an annual tendency from 1,025,901.71 tons to 712,118.69 tons. With the implementation of mangrove restoration, the decline of mangrove forests has decreased since 2003, promoting the stabilization and enhancement of carbon sinks in the mangrove wetlands of Qinglan Bay. The results of this study provide a technical method to evaluate the carbon sink contribution of mangrove wetland restoration in Hainan Province, a scientific basis and methodological innovation to monitor the carbon sink of mangrove cover change in larger regions of China, a theoretical basis to select criteria for mangrove restoration, and a scientific and systematic management strategy for ecological and mangrove restoration on Hainan Island.

Abstract:As a result of an analysis of the autocovariance of the complex heterodyne lidar signal, some general-enough inverse techniques (algorithms) are derived for recovering with high range resolution, below the sensing pulse length, of Doppler-velocity profiles in the atmosphere. Unlike our preceding works, it is assumed here that the laser pulses can have arbitrary fluctuating shape. The presence is also supposed of possible regular, arbitrary in form, intrapulse frequency deviations (chirp) and random frequency, phase and radial (Doppler)-velocity fluctuations. The algorithm performance and efficiency are studied and illustrated by computer simulations, taking into account the influence of the chirp and various random factors such as additive noise, pulse-shape fluctuations and radial-velocity fluctuations. It is shown that the algorithms developed allow the Doppler-velocity profiles to be determined with a considerably shorter resolution interval compared with the pulse length, at a reasonable number of signal realizations (laser shots) and appropriate data processing to reduce the statistical error due to the random factors.
Temporal and spatial variations of air-sea CO2 fluxes and their key influence factors in seagrass meadows of Hainan Island, South China Sea

Abstract:Seagrass ecosystems have received a great deal of attention for contributing to uptake of atmospheric CO2, and thereby helping to mitigate global climate change ('blue carbon'). Carbon budgets for seagrass ecosystems are developed by estimating air-sea CO2 fluxes. Data for air-sea CO2 flux for tropical seagrass ecosystems are lacking, which is problematic for constraining global seagrass carbon budgets. Here, we sought to address this important data gap for tropical seagrass ecosystems (dominated by Thalassia hemprichii and Enhalus acoroides) from the Hainan Island of South China Sea, while also testing what the main factors driving the variations of air-sea CO2 fluxes are. We found that air-sea CO2 fluxes exhibited a U-shape diurnal variability from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. of the next day, with the highest and lowest air-sea CO2 fluxes values at early morning and afternoon, respectively. Biological processes were the driving force for mediating diurnal variations of seawater pCO2. The pCO2, sea in different seasons displayed a trend of increasing from spring, reaching maximum in summer and then a decreasing trend after summer, where water temperature, wind speed and seagrass growth mainly drove the variations. This resulted in net uptake of CO2 in all seasons except during summer in our study seagrass ecosystems, with greater negative values found in autumn (-3.63 ± 0.76 mmol m-2 d-1) than those in winter (-2.84 ± 0.60 mmol m-2 d-1). While the nutrient loading induced seagrass biomass changes (especially the seagrass T. hemprichii), which mediated the air-sea CO2 fluxes changes among different seagrass meadows. Net annual CO2 uptake potential under low nutrient loading (-0.77 ± 0.16 mol m-2 yr-1) was 23-54 % greater than high nutrient loading seagrass meadows, with the average annual air-sea CO2 flux of the three seagrass meadows as -0.64 ± 0.13 mol m-2 yr-1. These results suggest that tropical seagrass meadows of Hainan Island are a significant CO2 sink of atmospheric CO2, but this capacity can be diminished by nutrient loading. Scaling up, we estimate the annual atmospheric CO2 uptake by seagrass meadows of Hainan Island (total area 55.28 km2) was 1544 t of CO2 yr-1, equivalent to the annual emissions from the wholesale, retail, accommodation and catering industries of 164,000 tourists in Hainan Island. With carbon neutrality becoming an important part of global climate governance, this study provides timely information for capitalising on the ability of seagrasses to contribute to natural climate solutions.
Acidification and hypoxia in seawater, and pollutant enrichment in the sediments of Qi’ao Island mangrove wetlands, Pearl River Estuary, China

Abstract:Mangrove forests are crucial in absorbing, storing, and purifying pollutants while maintaining ecological balance. A study was conducted in 2020 to investigate the biogeochemical processes of seawater and sedimentary environmental factors in the Qi'ao Island mangrove wetland. The study comprised two survey sections and ten survey stations within the mangrove forest and 16 large-scale survey stations in the adjacent sea area. During ebb tides, the mean concentrations of inorganic nitrogen and phosphate in Section D1 of the mangrove forest were 0.63 mg/L and 0.003 mg/L, respectively. These levels were significantly lower than the results observed in the adjacent sea area and Section D2 of the mangrove forest during flood tides. The mangrove forest efficiently absorbed and consumed nutrients, with the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio of consumed nutrients being notably higher than that typically utilized by plants during growth. We identified various biogeochemical processes, including nitrogen fixation, mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification, occurring within the mangrove forest. Seawater measurements in Section D1 during ebb tides showed the mean pH of 7.58 and dissolved oxygen levels of 4.52 mg/L, resulting in a dissolved oxygen saturation level of only 57.0 %. The low dissolved oxygen levels were attributed to organic matter degradation in the forest. Consequently, the longer the water retention time, the more obvious the trend of hypoxia and acidification was observed. In the adjacent sea area, the sedimentary environment was deemed healthy, with pollutants primarily originating from runoff and ship discharge from waterways and ports. However, within the mangrove forest, the sediments exhibited higher enrichment factors for organic carbon and sulfide, indicating significant pollution compared to the adjacent sea area. The sediments were conducive to the accumulation and burial of total Hg, Zn, and Cu, while other heavy metals did not show prominent deposition and enrichment. Notably, the enrichment factor of oils was as high as 4.37, leading to the formation of an oil pollution zone at the forest edge, and the enrichment of pollutants in sediment may inhibit the growth and expansion of mangroves. Overall, this study shed light on the occurrence of seawater acidification, hypoxia, and the behavior of sediment pollutants within the mangrove forest. The findings provide valuable insights to support efforts aimed at promoting and maintaining the ecosystem health of mangrove forests.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a vital role in carbon (C) sequestration, named ‘blue carbon’. The review aims to disentangle the processes and influencing factors, including elevated atmospheric CO2, global climate warming, sea level rise and anthropogenic activities. Firstly, we provided an overview of C processes, including input, output, and deposition, in coastal wetlands. We then summarized the impacts of different factors on C processes by modifying soil physicochemical properties, plant growth, vegetation type, and microbial community composition. Vegetation composition was a major contributor to C inputs, and C outputs was mainly controlled by microbial decomposition. Increased atmospheric CO2 concentration and associated climate warming often enhanced vegetation growth, while climate warming also promoted soil C decomposition. As a result, C storage could increase under mild warming conditions in the short-term, but decrease in the long-term as the severity of warming intensifies. Elevated salinity, caused by sea level rise, can be harmful to plant growth and inhibit organic C decomposition because of the reduced biomass and the weakened metabolic capacity of microorganisms. Most of human activities, such as reclamation, can lead to less C input and more C output, resulting in decreased C storage in coastal wetlands. Additionally, we also illustrate various coastal wetland restoration methods aimed at enhancing C sequestration, including legal frameworks, scientific theories, vegetation management, hydrological restoration, and other relevant constructions. Vegetation management could benefit plant growth and enhance C input effectively, and hydrological restoration can maintain the harmonious development of coastal wetland ecosystems. Other constructions, including breakwater, spillway, and dredged material, could protect coastal wetlands, especially facing sea level rise. This review offers valuable theoretical support and scientific references for the sustainable development and management of coastal wetlands in a changing climate.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are blue carbon (C) reservoirs and play an important role in mitigating climate change by efficiently capturing and storing organic carbon (OC). However, assessments of blue C sequestration focus primarily on soil organic carbon (SOC) inventories of vegetated coastal ecosystems and often neglect the potential of tidal flats to sequestrate C. To address the issue, a comparative assessment was carried out for two representative coastal wetlands in China: the Yellow River Delta and Yancheng coastal wetlands. The study focused on distinct types of coastal ecosystems including unvegetated tidal flats and three types of salt marshes vegetated by either Spartina alterniflora , Suaeda salsa , or Phragmites australis . We combined field sampling and data synthesis to assess the OC stock of different coastal areas and evaluate the regional OC storage. The results indicated that vegetated salt marshes exhibited higher OC stocks per unit area compared to unvegetated tidal flats in both regions. Interestingly, tidal flats in the Yellow River Delta displayed comparable OC stocks to S. salsa marsh on the Yancheng coast. The regional OC storage was estimated to be 5.64 ± 0.61 Tg C for the Yellow River Delta and 9.96 ± 1.52 Tg C for the Yancheng coast. Tidal flats with low SOC stock per unit area were the primary contributors to regional OC storage, accounting for over 75 % of the total. This predominance was attributed to the extensive distribution of tidal flats along China's coast, indicating their significant potential as blue C sinks. Overall, this study provides insights into the OC storage potential of various wetland types in China and highlights the importance of considering tidal flats in estimates of blue C sequestration.

Abstract:The climate mitigation potential of coastal blue carbon including mangroves, seagrasses and tidal marshes have been widely recognized, and guidelines for incorporating coastal wetlands into greenhouse gas inventories released by IPCC in 2014 make it possible to bring coastal blue carbon into multilevel climate governance regimes. However, the intricate guidelines and inadequate data block governments from accounting and reporting their coastal blue carbon in inventories. In this research, we integrated and simplified the equations and assumptions of IPCC inventory guidance on coastal wetlands, and took Hainan province of China as a case study by (1) formulating a land use change matrix from high resolution satellite imagery for the years of 2010 to 2020, (2) compiling dataset of emission factors for coastal wetlands of Hainan, and (3) estimating CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O emissions from coastal wetlands in Hainan. We reveal that the mangroves’ area increased from 4,190.7 ha in 2010 to 4,644.1 ha in 2020, with a net increase of 483.9 ha from tidal flats and aquaculture ponds. The weighted average EF AGB and EF soil of Hainan is 61.7 MgC ha -1 and 227.4 MgC ha -1 , respectively,estimated from peer-reviewed literature in both Chinese and English. The annual average net CO 2 emission of mangroves of Hainan is -26974.3 MgCO 2 e yr -1 . CO 2 emission from mangrove deforestation and N 2 O emission from shrimp aquaculture in coastal aeras may offset the efforts of coastal wetlands conservation and restoration. Countries and sub-country regions are encouraged to bring coastal blue carbon into greenhouse gases inventories as soon as possible, and to take a bottom-up strategy to initiate the task at a local level.

Geospatial Environmental Influence on Forest Carbon Sequestration Potential of Tropical Forest Growth in Hainan Island, China

Abstract:Tropical forests, although covering only 7% of the world's land area, have great forest carbon sequestration capacity, accounting for 20% of the world's forest carbon sink. However, the growth dynamics and forest carbon sink potential of tropical forests remain unclear. Hainan Island is going to be China's forest carbon trading center. Therefore, accurately assessing the future forest carbon sink potential of Hainan Island's tropical forest is crucial. In this study, 393 forest permanent sample plots in Hainan Island in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018 were selected as the research objects. The dynamic model of tropical forest growth with the geospatial environmental indicators was established based on the measured and most accurate annual diameter at breast height (DBH) growth factors. The DBH growth prediction's bias ranged from 0.46 to 0.07 cm, RMSE ranged from 1.50 to 5.29 cm, bias% ranged from -2.96 to 0.55%, and RRMSE ranged from 12.18 to 34.30%. In addition, the geospatial environmental indicators of forest growth provide scientific guidance for future ecological protection and land evolution of Hainan Island. Based on DBH–tree height–volume, volume–biomass, and biomass–forest carbon storage relationships, forest carbon sequestration potential could be accurately evaluated by DBH growth. The results show that within the next 30 years, the forest carbon sequestration in Hainan Island will account for 1.8% of the total forest carbon sequestration in China, while the forest area will only account for 0.88% of the total forest area in China. It is roughly estimated that in the next 30 years, the total carbon sink of the tropical forest in Hainan Island will be 83.59 TgC. This study further proves that the annual increase in DBH can accurately assess the forest carbon sink potential of the forest. The forest carbon sink prediction based on the annual increase in DBH can provide data support and theoretical basis for forest carbon sink trading between forest farms and enterprises.

Abstract:Our synthesis study shows that China's coastal wetlands are highly productive and have high carbon sequestration capacity on a per‐unit‐area basis. Meanwhile, anthropogenic activities, including human disturbance and restoration in the coastal wetland, can substantially alter the carbon sequestration capacity, and the effect of the anthropogenic perturbation in mangroves was more extensive than that in salt marshes. Conserving all remaining intact coastal wetland in China will increase carbon sequestration to ~1.0 Tg C annually and protecting the remaining coastal wetland from degradation and restoring the degraded coastal wetland can effectively increase carbon sequestration. Coastal wetlands play an important role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation. However, climate change, reclamation, and restoration have been causing substantial changes in coastal wetland areas and carbon exchange in China during recent decades. Here we compiled a carbon flux database consisting of 15 coastal wetland sites to assess the magnitude, patterns, and drivers of carbon fluxes and to compare fluxes among contrasting natural, disturbed, and restored wetlands. The natural coastal wetlands have the average net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) of −577 g C m−2 year−1, with −821 g C m−2 year−1 for mangrove forests and −430 g C m−2 year−1 for salt marshes. There are pronounced latitudinal patterns for carbon dioxide exchange of natural coastal wetlands: NEE increased whereas gross primary production (GPP) and respiration of ecosystem decreased with increasing latitude. Distinct environmental factors drive annual variations of GPP between mangroves and salt marshes; temperature was the dominant controlling factor in salt marshes, while temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation were co‐dominant in mangroves. Meanwhile, both anthropogenic reclamation and restoration had substantial effects on coastal wetland carbon fluxes, and the effect of the anthropogenic perturbation in mangroves was more extensive than that in salt marshes. Furthermore, from 1980 to 2020, anthropogenic reclamation of China's coastal wetlands caused a carbon loss of ~3720 Gg C, while the mangrove restoration project during the period of 2021–2025 may switch restored coastal wetlands from a carbon source to carbon sink with a net carbon gain of 73 Gg C. The comparison of carbon fluxes among these coastal wetlands can improve our understanding of how anthropogenic perturbation can affect the potentials of coastal blue carbon in China, which has implications for informing conservation and restoration strategies and efforts of coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Coastal lagoons with small catchment basins are highly sensitive to natural processes and anthropogenic activities. To figure out the environmental changes of a coastal lagoon and its contribution to carbon burial, two sediment cores were collected in Xincun Lagoon, southeastern Hainan Island and (210) P b activities, grain size parameters, total organic carbon(TOC), total nitrogen(TN), total inorganic carbon(TIC) and stable carbon isotopes(δ 13 C) were measured. The results show that in 1770–1815, the decreasing water exchange capacity with outer open water, probably caused by the shifting and narrowing of the tidal inlet, not only diminished the currents and fined the sediments in the lagoon, but also reduced the organic matter of marine sources. From 1815 to 1950, the sedimentary environment of Xincun Lagoon was frequently influenced by storm events. These extreme events resulted in the high fluctuation of sediment grain size and sorting, as well as the great variation in contributions of terrestrial(higher plants, soils) and marine sources(phytoplankton, algae, seagrass). The extremely high content of TIC, compared to TOC before 1950 could be attributed to the large-scale coverage of coral reefs. However, with the boost of seawater aquaculture activities after 1970, the health growth of coral species was severely threatened, and corresponding production and inorganic carbon burial flux reduced. The apparent enhanced inorganic carbon burial rate after 1990 might result from the concomitant carbonate debris produced by seawater aquaculture. This result is important for local government long-term coastal management and environmental planning.
Divergent response of blue carbon components to wetland types and hydrological effects in typical estuarine wetlands of Jiaozhou Bay, China

Abstract:As ecosystems subject to periodic tides, estuarine wetlands have a significant capacity to sequester carbon over time. Understanding the distribution patterns of soil carbon components and identifying the key factors influencing these patterns are key to gaining insight into the function of "blue carbon" in coastal wetlands. To clarify the response of soil carbon components to wetland types and hydrological effects in estuarine wetlands, the typical estuarine wetlands in Jiaozhou Bay, China were selected as the study area, and the soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), soil inorganic carbon (SIC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) under different wetland types and hydrological effects were investigated. The results showed that the SOC, SIC, and MBC contents were significantly influenced by the wetland types. The SOC and MBC contents were as follows: mudflat (GT) > Phragmites australis wetland (PA) > Suaeda salsa wetland (SS). The overall content of SIC was highest in PA, followed by GT and SS. Hydrological effects had significant influence on the soil MBC, DOC and DIC contents. With the increase hydrological effects, the soil MBC content decreased by 38.89%-72.22%, while the DOC and DIC contents increased by 15.13%-19.89% and 13.41%-86.70%, respectively. The results of the correlation analysis and structural equation model indicated that wetland types and hydrological effects directly or indirectly (through changes in soil pH, bulk density, water content, and salinity) drove the changes in soil carbon contents in estuarine wetlands. Altogether, our findings implied that the alterations of wetland types and hydrological effects will affect the blue carbon function of estuarine wetlands. In the future, for accurate assessment of a blue carbon budget for estuarine wetlands, the differences in wetland types and hydrological effects of different areas should be considered.
Coastal distribution and driving factors for blue carbon fractions in the surface soil of a warm-temperate salt marsh in China

Abstract:A better understanding of blue carbon (BC) sequestration can not only contribute to a better elucidation of global carbon cycle processes but can also lay the foundation for the incorporation of BC ecosystems into regional and global carbon offset schemes. In this study, the surface soils of seven plots along a landward to seaward distance gradient were analyzed for the concentrations and stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil inorganic carbon (SIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), as well as soil physical (bulk density, texture, moisture), chemical (pH, electrical conductivity), and microbiological (phospholipid fatty acid) properties in the coastal wetlands. Correlation, variation partition and random forest (RF) analyses were used to identify key variables correlating with BC fraction distribution patterns. The results suggested that SIC, DIC, and DOC, exhibited similar landward-increasing trends but the driving factors were distinct from each other. Based on correlation and RF analysis, both SIC and DIC were closely related to soil moisture and clay contents, but microbial indicators of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and actinomycete, were found to be associated with SIC, and abiotic properties played less important but still substantial roles in predicting DIC dynamics. In contrast with the other three investigated BC fractions, SOC showed a slight tendency toward enrichment in the seaward direction, and SIC was identified as the main driving factor. DOC showed no significant correlations with the other BC fractions, and its variation could not be explained well by the selected edaphic parameters. The soils in the YRD's tidal Suaeda salsa salt marshes showed a significant negative coupled SOC–SIC correlation, which was potentially related to divergent sedimentary processes and potential biotransformation between SOC and SIC. These results highlight the importance of integrating multiple BC fractions and their interactions into attempts to explore key mechanisms of BC cycling.

Abstract:The adverse impact of macroalgal blooms associated with nutrient enrichment on seagrass habitats and carbon storage potential is an ecological concern. In the present study, the soil carbon stock and sources were compared between a seagrass meadow where a serious macroalgal bloom occurred (site M) and an adjacent site without apparent macroalgae (site R) in a nutrient-enriched lagoon in South Hainan Island, China, to test whether macroalgal blooms associated with nutrient enrichment would impact the soil carbon in seagrass meadows. The soil organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen contents in the top 30 cm at site M were significantly lower than those at site R. The soil OC stocks (top 30 cm) were 3.4 and 5.4 Mg C ha -1 at site M and site R, respectively, and no difference was observed between sampling stations with different distances offshore at either site. Soil δ 13 C was more enriched and closer to the δ 13 C of seagrass tissues at site R than at site M. Bayesian stable isotope mixing model analyses suggested that seagrass-derived material contributed ~50% to soil OC at site R, while at site M, the contribution was reduced to ~25%. The results suggested that macroalgal blooms associated with nutrient enrichment could drive the loss of seagrass-derived OC and the OC stock in the soil, which is worthy of full attention for blue carbon conservation.

Abstract:Blue Carbon (BC) strategy refers to the approaches that mitigate and adapt to climate change through the conservation and restoration of seagrass, saltmarsh and mangrove ecosystems and, in some BC programs, also through the expansion of seaweed aquaculture. The major losses of coastal habitats in combination with the commitments of China under the Paris Agreement provide unique opportunity and necessity to develop a strong Chinese BC program. Here, we (1) characterize China's BC habitats, examine their changes since 1950 along with the drivers of changes; (2) consider the expansion of seaweed aquaculture and how this may be managed to become an emerging BC resource in China, along with the engineering solutions required to enhance its potential; and (3) provide the rationale and elements for BC program in China. We find China currently has 1326–2149 km2 wild and 2–15 km2 created mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass habitats, while 9236–10059 km2 (77–87%) has been lost since 1950, mainly due to land reclamation. The current area of farmed seaweed habitat is 1252–1265 km2, which is close to the area of wild mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass habitats. We conclude that BC strategies have potentials yet to be fully developed in China, particularly through climate change adaptation benefits such as coastal protection and eco-environmental co-benefits of seaweed farming such as habitat creation for fish and other biota, alleviation of eutrophication, hypoxia and acidification, and the generation of direct and value added products with lower environmental impact relative to land-based production. On this basis, we provide a roadmap for BC strategies adjusted to the unique characteristics and capacities of China.

Abstract:Estuarine wetlands are an important part of coastal blue carbon and play an essential role in mitigating climate change. However, their geographical location typically exposes them to numerous anthropogenic disturbances. The responses of carbon sink function to changes in ecological factors induced by these disturbances still lack a systematic and comprehensive compendium. To fill this knowledge gap, we selected the Yangtze River estuary, a representative estuary in China, and reviewed the potential effects of anthropogenic disturbances on the carbon sink function of wetlands, with emphasis on the key processes of carbon turnover (including plant carbon fixation and soil respiration) and the microbial mechanisms involved. Most of the reviewed anthropogenic disturbances negatively affected carbon sequestration in the Yangtze River estuary wetlands, either by inhibiting plant growth (e.g., reclamation, siltation of high tidal flats, and hydraulic engineering projects) or by promoting organic carbon decomposition (e.g., reclamation, invasion of Spartina alterniflora , livestock grazing, tidal organic matter input, and eutrophication). By integrating the carbon input and output processes, we argue that reclamation, tidal organic matter input, and eutrophication weaken the carbon sink function of the Yangtze River estuary wetlands, and that some wetlands conservation measures are necessary considering the dual carbon target proposed by China in 2020.
