Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:A new 2D flexible cobalt( II ) framework (Co-MOF) exhibits a reversible solid-state structural transformation upon guest molecule removal/uptake. After activation, Co-MOF-α with 1D porous channels transformed into Co-MOF-β (0D voids) accompanied by a shift in metal and carboxylate coordination modes, the rotation of organic linkers and the contraction of interstitial spaces. Gas adsorption experiments reveal that Co-MOF-β exhibits a two-step CO 2 adsorption isotherm and close-to-open (type F-IV) isotherms for C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 at 195 K. Moreover, it shows typical type I adsorption isotherms for the above gases and the selective uptake of C 2 H 2 over CH 4 and CO 2 at room temperature.

Abstract:With adequate building blocks, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can combine magnetic ordering and porosity. This makes MOFs a promising platform for the development of stimuli-responsive materials that show drastically different magnetic properties depending on the presence or absence of guest molecules within their pores. Here we report a CO2-responsive magnetic MOF that converts from ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic on CO2 adsorption, and returns to the ferrimagnetic state on CO2 desorption. The ferrimagnetic material is a layered MOF with a [D+–A−–D] formula, produced from the reaction of trifluorobenzoate-bridged paddlewheel-type diruthenium(ii) clusters as the electron donor (D) with diethoxytetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor (A). On CO2 uptake, it undergoes an in-plane electron transfer and a structural transition to adopt a [D–A–D] paramagnetic form. This magnetic phase change, and the accompanying modifications to the electronic conductivity and permittivity of the MOF, are electronically stabilized by the guest CO2 molecules accommodated in the framework.

Abstract:Gas storage/separation is a typical application of porous materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The adsorption/separation behavior results from the host-guest and/or guest-guest interaction and equilibration (host, porous material; guest, adsorbates). Although the driving forces for gas adsorption have been investigated, a detailed picture of interactions between gas molecules and MOFs has not clearly emerged. Herein, a new cobalt microporous MOF [Co(tipb)(adc)](DMF)3(H2O)1.5, which possesses a rare self-interpenetrated gra topology, has been prepared with both tipb and H2adc ligands (tipb = 1,3,5-tris(p-imidazolylphenyl)benzene, adc = 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylate). This MOF shows high stability and exceptional selective adsorption of CO2 over N2, O2, and CH4. In particular, a theoretical assumption of a "regional dynamic electric field effect" is proposed to clarify the selective adsorption. Moreover, we suggest that the proposed effect may be one of the most important factors impacting gas separation and storage in porous materials.
The Selective CO2 Adsorption and Photothermal Conversion Study of an Azo-Based Cobalt-MOF Material

Abstract:A new metal–organic framework (MOF), [Co2(L)2(azpy)]n (compound 1, H2L = 5-(pyridin-4-ylmethoxy)-isophthalic acid, azpy = 4,4′-azopyridine), was synthesized by a solvothermal method and further characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis for compound 1 indicated that two cis L22− ligands connected to two cobalt atoms resulted in a macrocycle structure. Through a series of adsorption tests, we found that compound 1 exhibited a high capacity of CO2, and the adsorption capacity could reach 30.04 cm3/g. More interestingly, under 273 K conditions, the adsorption of CO2 was 41.33 cm3/g. In addition, when the Co-MOF was irradiated by a 730 nm laser, rapid temperature increases for compound 1 were observed (temperature variation in 169 s: 26.6 °C), showing an obvious photothermal conversion performance. The photothermal conversion efficiency reached 20.3%, which might be due to the fact that the parallel arrangement of azo units inhibited non-radiative transition and promoted photothermal conversion. The study provides an efficient strategy for designing MOFs for the adsorption of CO2 and with good photothermal conversion performance.

Abstract:Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated as potential materials for CO2 capture and light hydrocarbon storage/separation due to their high porosity, large surface area, and tunable skeleton structures. In this work, the six cobalt-based MOFs 1–6 were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions by a mixed-ligand strategy. 1 and 2 have the same framework structure with a topology of {42·5}2{44·510·67·76·8}, while the structures of the 3–6 frameworks are the same with a topology of {42·5}2{44·510·69·74·8}. The adsorption properties of these MOFs for CO2 and C2 hydrocarbons were then investigated, and the effect of the functional groups was discussed. A 2-Fold Interpenetrated Nitrogen-Rich Metal–Organic Framework: Dye Adsorption and CO 2 Capture and Conversion

Abstract:A bifunctional ligand strategy for modification of the functional pores is of great significance in the structural design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, a new 2-fold interpenetrated "pillared-layer" 3D Co-MOF, {[Co(HL)(4,4′-bipy)]·DMF·2H2O}n (1), was successfully synthesized by using two kinds of ligands, imidazolecarboxylic acid and pyridine. The metal–carboxylic layers are pillared by the 4,4′-bipy ligand, displaying a 3D framework with rectangular 3D channels (high BET surface of 190.9 m2 g–1 and maximum aperture of 3.9 Å) that are decorated with abundant uncoordinated N and O atoms. 1 shows good water stability and thermal stability (320 °C). The proper pores and active sites endowed 1 with a selective adsorption of Congo red in aqueous solution. Abstract:The self-assembly of a bifunctional organic ligand with a formate-bridged rod-shaped secondary building unit leads to a new microporous metal-organic framework (MOF). This MOF shows a moderately high C2H2 storage capacity (145 cm3/g) and an excellent adsorption selectivity for C2H2/CO2 (11) at room temperature. Furthermore, its discriminatory sorption behavior toward C2H2 and CO2 was probed by computational analysis in detail.

Abstract:The high-efficiency CO2 separation using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial in CO2 capture and subsequent conversion for green carbon cycling, yet challenged by rational optimizing the size, shape, sorption site and microenvironment of the pores. The new MOFs with formula [Co2(btd)2(dpbt)2]·3DMF (1) is constructed from two matched long linkers of 4,4'-(benzoic[i1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic (H2btd) and 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3- benzothiadiazole) (dpbt) under solvothermal condition. The compound processes 3-fold interpenetrated pillared-layer frameworks, generating 1D channels sized at 10.8 × 8.2 Å2 and with exposed thiadiazole groups for improved CO2 sorption. The framework is quite rigid confirmed by quite limited changes in crystallographic parameters during solvent exchange and guest removal in single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) fashion. The Co(II)-MOF exhibits unprecedented good chemical stability in aqueous solution with pH ranging from 1 to 12, retaining unchanged PXRD patterns for more than 24 h. The activated MOFs show better adsorption for CO2 over N2 with selectivity of 18.8 at 273 K, benefitted from the merits of narrow 1D channels and appending Lewis basic sites on the pore surface.

Unraveling the molecular mechanism for enhanced gas adsorption in mixed-metal MOFs via solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Abstract:The incorporation of multiple metal ions in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through one-pot synthesis can induce unique properties originating from specific atomic-scale spatial apportionment, but the extraction of this crucial information poses challenges. Herein, nondestructive solid-state NMR spectroscopy was used to discern the atomic-scale metal apportionment in a series of bulk Mg1-xCox-MOF-74 samples via identification and quantification of eight distinct arrangements of Mg/Co ions labeled with a 13C-carboxylate, relative to Co content. Due to the structural characteristics of metal-oxygen chains, the number of metal permutations is infinite for Mg1-xCox-MOF-74, making the resolution of atomic-scale metal apportionment particularly challenging. The results were then employed in density functional theory calculations to unravel the molecular mechanism underlying the macroscopic adsorption properties of several industrially significant gases. It is found that the incorporation of weak adsorption sites (Mg2+ for CO and Co2+ for CO2 adsorption) into the MOF structure counterintuitively boosts the gas adsorption energy on strong sites (Co2+ for CO and Mg2+ for CO2 adsorption). Such effect is significant even for Co2+ remote from Mg2+ in the metal-oxygen chain, resulting in a greater enhancement of CO adsorption across a broad composition range, while the enhancement of CO2 adsorption is restricted to Mg2+ with adjacent Co2+. Dynamic breakthrough measurements unambiguously verified the trend in gas adsorption as a function of metal composition. This research thus illuminates the interplay between atomic-scale structures and macroscopic gas adsorption properties in mixed-metal MOFs and derived materials, paving the way for developing superior functional materials.

Nitrogen-enriched flexible metal-organic framework for CO2 adsorption

Abstract:A novel MOF named [Zn2(L)(DMF)] was synthesized using solvothermal methods from the reaction of the new linker (4,4',4''-(4,4',4''-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(methylene))tris(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-4,1-diyl))tribenzoic acid) and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O. This new MOF was characterized by means of different techniques: powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, suitable crystals were obtained, which allowed us to perform the X-Ray structure determination of this MOF. The capability of these new MOF to adsorb CO2 at different temperatures was measured and its isosteric enthalpy of adsorption was calculated. The novel MOF shows an uncommon node composed of a Zn3(-COO)6(DMF)2, and the asymmetric unit contains one crystallographically independent linker, one DMF molecule, and two Zn atoms. The [Zn2(L)(DMF)] MOF is a microporous material with high crystallinity and stability up to 250 °C. The multiple nitrogenated pyrazole linkers in its framework enhance its CO2 adsorption capabilities. This material exhibits a low CO2 isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (Hads), comparable to previously reported values for similar nitrogenated materials. All the observed CO2 adsorption capacities were further supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract:A combination of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and chemical fixation in a one-step process is attractive for chemists and environmentalists. In this work, by incorporating chelating multiamine sites to enhance the binding affinity toward CO2, two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn2(L)(2,6-NDC)2(H2O)]·1.5DMF·2H2O (1) and [Cd2(L)(2,6-NDC)2]·1.5DMF·2H2O (2) (L = N1-(4-(1 H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)benzyl)- N1-(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine, 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) were achieved under solvothermal conditions. Both 1 and 2 possess high selectivity for adsorption of CO2 over CH4 at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. Moreover, 1 has one-dimensional tubular channels decorated with multiactive sites including NH2 groups and coordination unsaturated Lewis acid metal sites, leading to efficient catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2 by reaction with epoxides to give cyclic carbonates under mild conditions.
Polar Ketone-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Showing A High Co2 Adsorption Performance

Abstract:The incorporation of various functionalities into porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an efficacious strategy to improving their gas adsorption properties. In this work, a carbonylated tetracarboxylic acid ligand (5,5'-carbonyldiisophthalic acid) was synthesized, and a ketone-functionalized MOF with exposed metal sites based on this ligand was formed successfully. Structural analysis reveals that the new MOF possesses channels decorated by the carbonyl groups and rhombicuboctahedral cages, with open Cu-II sites pointing toward the cage center. The framework exhibits exceptionally high CO2 (46.7 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar) and H-2 (2.8 wt % at 77 K and 1 bar) uptake. Furthermore, it displays high selectivities of CO2 adsorption over N-2 and CH4 at 298 K.

Abstract:In this work, inspired by a water-assisted three-dimensional supramolecular structure 1, we use a mixed-ligand strategy to form a 3D pillared-layered matrix by the introduction of linear ligands to compete against the water molecules. The resulting analogue microporous MOFs of 2-H, 2-F and 2-N, decorated with different functional groups, similarly show the CO2 uptake. Thanks to the negligible N2 adsorption capacity, enhanced selective adsorption towards CO2 is achieved in compound 2-N. That is, we present here an alternative plan for the high CO2 selective adsorption performance. In addition, the structure stability and moderate affinity for CO2 of these microporous MOFs endow them with excellent reusability.
MOF-derived bimetallic coordination polymer@cobalt-aluminum layered double hydroxide for highly selective CO2 adsorption: Experiments, mechanisms

Abstract:Selective capture of CO2 is one of the most effective strategies for combating the greenhouse effect. In this study, we report the synthesis of a novel adsorbent-an amine-based cobalt-aluminum layered hydroxide with a hafnium/titanium metal coordination polymer (denoted as Co-Al-LDH@Hf/Ti-MCP-AS)-through the derivatization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for selective CO2 adsorption and separation. Co-Al-LDH@Hf/Ti-MCP-AS achieved the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of 2.57 mmol g-1 at 25 °C and 0.1 MPa. The adsorption behavior followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models, indicating that chemisorption occurs on a non-homogeneous surface. Co-Al-LDH@Hf/Ti-MCP-AS also exhibited selective CO2 adsorption in CO2/N2 and excellent stability over six adsorption-desorption cycles. An in-depth analysis of the adsorption mechanism through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional theory and frontier molecular orbital calculations revealed that adsorption occurs through acid-base interactions between amine functional groups and CO2 and that the tertiary amines (N3) have the highest affinity toward CO2. Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks: Probing the Lewis Acid Site for Co2 Conversion

Abstract:A highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporating two kinds of second building units (SBUs), i.e., dimeric paddlewheel (Zn-2 (COO)(4)) and tetrameric (Zn-4(O) (CO2)(6)), is successfully assembled by the reaction of a tricarboxylate ligand with Zn-II ion. Subsequently, single-crystal-to-single-crystal metal cation exchange using the constructed MOF is investigated, and the results show that Cu-II and Co-II ions can selectively be introduced into the MOF without compromising the crystallinity of the pristine framework. This metal cation-exchangeable MOF provides a useful platform for studying the metal effect on both gas adsorption and catalytic activity of the resulted MOFs. While the gas adsorption experiments reveal that Cu-II and Co-II exchanged samples exhibit comparable CO2 adsorption capability to the pristine Zn-II-based MOF under the same conditions, catalytic investigations for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides into related carbonates demonstrate that Zn-II-based MOF affords the highest catalytic activity as compared with Cu-II and Co-II exchanged ones. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these constructed MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. This research sheds light on how metal exchange can influence intrinsic properties of MOFs.
