Abstract:As a major greenhouse gas, the continuous increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has caused serious environmental problems, although CO2 is also an abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic carbon source. Here, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) with highly ordered hierarchical structure as adsorbent and catalyst for chemical fixation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure, and the CO2 can be converted to the formate in excellent yields. Meanwhile, we have successfully integrated highly ordered macroporous and mesoporous structures into MOFs, and the macro-, meso-, and microporous structures have all been presented in one framework. Based on the unique hierarchical pores, high surface area (592 m(2)/g), and high CO2 adsorption capacity (49.51 cm(3)/g), the ordered macroporous-mesoporous MOFs possess high activity for chemical fixation of CO2 (yield of 77%). These results provide a promising route of chemical CO2 fixation through MOF materials.

Abstract:A combination of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and chemical fixation in a one-step process is attractive for chemists and environmentalists. In this work, by incorporating chelating multiamine sites to enhance the binding affinity toward CO2, two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn2(L)(2,6-NDC)2(H2O)]·1.5DMF·2H2O (1) and [Cd2(L)(2,6-NDC)2]·1.5DMF·2H2O (2) (L = N1-(4-(1 H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)benzyl)- N1-(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine, 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) were achieved under solvothermal conditions. Both 1 and 2 possess high selectivity for adsorption of CO2 over CH4 at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. Moreover, 1 has one-dimensional tubular channels decorated with multiactive sites including NH2 groups and coordination unsaturated Lewis acid metal sites, leading to efficient catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2 by reaction with epoxides to give cyclic carbonates under mild conditions.

Abstract:A flexible metal-organic framework (FMOF) with functionalized pores was hydrothermally synthesized to improve CO2 affinity and selectivity. The obtained FMOF exhibits a reversible shrinking and swelling framework transformation, which is triggered by the adsorption of CO2 rather than by the adsorption of N2 and CH4. At ambient temperature and an atmospheric pressure, this FMOF shows not only a high CO2 uptake (98 cm(3) g(-1), 19.3 wt %) but also a good calculated adsorption selectivity for CO2 over both CH4 and N2 (CO2/CH4 50:50 v/v: 28.6:1, CO2/N2 15:85 v/v: 210.4:1 calculated by ideal adsorbed solution theory), indicating potential applications in the purification of natural gas and industrial flue gas.

Abstract:The high-efficiency CO2 separation using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial in CO2 capture and subsequent conversion for green carbon cycling, yet challenged by rational optimizing the size, shape, sorption site and microenvironment of the pores. The new MOFs with formula [Co2(btd)2(dpbt)2]·3DMF (1) is constructed from two matched long linkers of 4,4'-(benzoic[i1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic (H2btd) and 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3- benzothiadiazole) (dpbt) under solvothermal condition. The compound processes 3-fold interpenetrated pillared-layer frameworks, generating 1D channels sized at 10.8 × 8.2 Å2 and with exposed thiadiazole groups for improved CO2 sorption. The framework is quite rigid confirmed by quite limited changes in crystallographic parameters during solvent exchange and guest removal in single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) fashion. The Co(II)-MOF exhibits unprecedented good chemical stability in aqueous solution with pH ranging from 1 to 12, retaining unchanged PXRD patterns for more than 24 h. The activated MOFs show better adsorption for CO2 over N2 with selectivity of 18.8 at 273 K, benefitted from the merits of narrow 1D channels and appending Lewis basic sites on the pore surface.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:A highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporating both exposed metal sites and nitrogen-rich triazole groups was successfully constructed via solvothermal assembly of a clicked octcarboxylate ligand and Cu(II) ions, which presents a high affinity toward CO2 molecules clearly verified by gas adsorption and Raman spectral detection. The constructed MOF featuring CO2-adsorbing property and exposed Lewis-acid metal sites could serve as an excellent catalyst for CO2-based chemical fixation. Catalytic activity of the MOF was confirmed by remarkably high efficiency on CO2 cycloaddition with small epoxides. When extending the substrates to larger ones, its. activity showed a sharp decrease. These observations reveal that MOF-catalyzed CO2 cycloaddition of small substrates was carried out within the framework, while large ones cannot easily enter into the porous framework for catalytic reactions. Thus, the synthesized MOF exhibits high catalytic selectivity to different substrates on account of the confinement of the pore diameter. The high efficiency and size-dependent selectivity toward small epoxides on catalytic CO2 cycloaddition make this MOF a promising heterogeneous catalyst for carbon fixation.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent one of the most promising porous solids for possible use as sorbents to control and reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Studies have shown that open metal sites (OMS) interact strongly with carbon dioxide and thus, serve as efficient binding sites for CO2 capture. However, many OMS-bearing MOFs are lack of framework stability and often have high regeneration temperature. To seek ways to solve the stability issue, we designed a series of isoreticular MOFs, Zr-tcpb-COOM (M = alkali/alkaline earth metal), by exchange of metal ions with protons on Zr-tcpb-COOH via post-synthetic modifications (PSM). The pristine MOF (Zr-tcpb-COOH) has a very robust framework. The PSM process does not deteriorate the framework stability but creates metal binding sites that form strong bonds with carbon dioxide. The results show that at low CO2 pressure, the uptake amount is enhanced considerably using Zr-tcpb-COOM and is in trend of increasing atomic number (Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Ca2+). High adsorption selectivity (CO2/N2 IAST selectivity (15:85) = 539.5) is also achieved for CO2 over N2 at room temperature. This approach offers a feasible method to improve CO2 capture capacity, especially at low concentrations.

Abstract:The incorporation of various functionalities into porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an efficacious strategy to improving their gas adsorption properties. In this work, a carbonylated tetracarboxylic acid ligand (5,5'-carbonyldiisophthalic acid) was synthesized, and a ketone-functionalized MOF with exposed metal sites based on this ligand was formed successfully. Structural analysis reveals that the new MOF possesses channels decorated by the carbonyl groups and rhombicuboctahedral cages, with open Cu-II sites pointing toward the cage center. The framework exhibits exceptionally high CO2 (46.7 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar) and H-2 (2.8 wt % at 77 K and 1 bar) uptake. Furthermore, it displays high selectivities of CO2 adsorption over N-2 and CH4 at 298 K.

Abstract:Interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are often observed to show lower porosity than their non-interpenetrating analogues. It would be highly desirable if the interpenetrated MOFs could still provide high stability, high rigidity, and optimal pore size for applications. In this work, an asymmetrical tricarboxylate organic linker was rationally designed for the construction of a copper(II)-based microporous MOF with a twofold interpenetrated structure of Pt3 O4 topology. In spite of having structural interpenetration, the activated MOF shows high porosity with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 2297 m2 g-1 , and high CO2 (15.7 wt % at 273 K and 1 bar) and H2 uptake (1.64 wt % at 77 K and 1 bar).

Abstract:A novel MOF named [Zn2(L)(DMF)] was synthesized using solvothermal methods from the reaction of the new linker (4,4',4''-(4,4',4''-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(methylene))tris(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-4,1-diyl))tribenzoic acid) and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O. This new MOF was characterized by means of different techniques: powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, suitable crystals were obtained, which allowed us to perform the X-Ray structure determination of this MOF. The capability of these new MOF to adsorb CO2 at different temperatures was measured and its isosteric enthalpy of adsorption was calculated. The novel MOF shows an uncommon node composed of a Zn3(-COO)6(DMF)2, and the asymmetric unit contains one crystallographically independent linker, one DMF molecule, and two Zn atoms. The [Zn2(L)(DMF)] MOF is a microporous material with high crystallinity and stability up to 250 °C. The multiple nitrogenated pyrazole linkers in its framework enhance its CO2 adsorption capabilities. This material exhibits a low CO2 isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (Hads), comparable to previously reported values for similar nitrogenated materials. All the observed CO2 adsorption capacities were further supported by DFT calculations.
Enhanced Adsorption Selectivity of Carbon Dioxide and Ethane on Porous Metal–Organic Framework Functionalized by a Sulfur-Rich Heterocycle

Abstract:Porous metal–organic framework [Zn2(ttdc)2(bpy)] (1) based on thieno [3,2-b]thiophenedicarboxylate (ttdc) was synthesized and characterized. The structure contains intersected zig-zag channels with an average aperture of 4 × 6 Å and a 49% (v/v) guest-accessible pore volume. Gas adsorption studies confirmed the microporous nature of 1 with a specific surface area (BET model) of 952 m2·g–1 and a pore volume of 0.37 cm3·g–1. Extensive CO2, N2, O2, CO, CH4, C2H2, C2H4 and C2H6 gas adsorption experiments at 273 K and 298 K were carried out, which revealed the great adsorption selectivity of C2H6 over CH4 (IAST selectivity factor 14.8 at 298 K). The sulfur-rich ligands and double framework interpenetration in 1 result in a dense decoration of the inner surface by thiophene heterocyclic moieties, which are known to be effective secondary adsorption sites for carbon dioxide. As a result, remarkable CO2 adsorption selectivities were obtained for CO2/CH4 (11.7) and CO2/N2 (27.2 for CO2:N2 = 1:1, 56.4 for CO2:N2 = 15:85 gas mixtures). The computational DFT calculations revealed the decisive role of the sulfur-containing heterocycle moieties in the adsorption of CO2 and C2H6. High CO2 adsorption selectivity values and a relatively low isosteric heat of CO2 adsorption (31.4 kJ·mol–1) make the porous material 1 a promising candidate for practical separation of biogas as well as for CO2 sequestration from flue gas or natural gas.

Abstract:In metalorganic framework (MOF) chemistry, polar functionalities greatly affect the gas adsorption properties. However, synthesis of MOFs with desired functionality is very challenging because many chemical functionalities cannot be achieved under the conditions for MOF assembly. Herein, a facile synthesis of new functionalized two-dimensional MOFs with preferential CO2 capture is presented, which uses two successive synthesis steps: 1) rational design and template-free synthesis of the parent MOF with designated pendant amino groups and 2) postsynthetic modification of the active amino groups with acetic acid and trimesoyl chloride functionalities. The only variation in structure arises from the functional groups of these materials. Experimental results demonstrate that the three 2D layered MOFs have remarkable thermal stability and moisture resistance, which are particularly advantageous for practical CO2 capture. Although their surface areas are moderate (270340 m2?g-1), they still have excellent CO2 adsorption capacity (up to 2.9 mmol?g-1 at 1 bar and 273 K) comparable to that of previously reported MOFs with much higher surface areas. Based on first-principles calculations, it is shown that the acidic carbonyl functionalities in addition to the amino groups are also favorable to bind CO2 molecules. The adsorption sites generated from polar functionalities are key factors leading to high CO2 uptake.
New Metal-Organic Frameworks for Chemical Fixation of CO2

Abstract:A novel series of two zirconium- and one indium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, MOF-892, MOF-893, and MOF-894, constructed from the hexatopic linker, 1',2',3',4',5',6'-hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene, were synthesized and fully characterized. MOF-892 and MOF-893 are two new exemplars of materials with topologies previously unseen in the important family of zirconium MOFs. MOF-892, MOF-893, and MOF-894 exhibit efficient heterogeneous catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO2, resulting in a cyclic organic carbonate formation with high conversion, selectivity, and yield under mild conditions (1 atm CO2, 80 °C, and solvent-free). Because of the structural features provided by their building units, MOF-892 and MOF-893 are replete with accessible Lewis and Brønsted acid sites located at the metal clusters and the non-coordinating carboxylic groups of the linkers, respectively, which is found to promote the catalytic CO2 cycloaddition reaction. As a proof-of-concept, MOF-892 exhibits high catalytic activity in the one-pot synthesis of styrene carbonate from styrene and CO2 without preliminary synthesis and isolation of styrene oxide.

Abstract:A new dual-cage-based porous metal-organic framework (MOF, termed DZU-113) assembly from the triazole-carboxylate linker and the Cu(II) paddle-wheel unit was solvothermally constructed. The structure of DZU-113 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, being consisted of the octahedral cage with an internal diameter of approximately 0.4 nm, and the spindle nano-cage with internal pores of about 0.8 nm × 2.2 nm, respectively. Specially, the uncoordinated N atoms of triazole groups are distributed in the bottleneck windows of the spindle nano-cage, serving as open functional sites. DZU-113 has permanent porosity with the Brunauer−Emmett−Teller surface area of 1207 m2 g−1. The CO2 adsorption test demonstrated that the total uptake of DZU-113 can reach 66.7 cm3 g−1 at 298 K, and 112.0 cm3 g−1 at 273 K, 1 bar. Moreover, it achieves robust catalytic performance for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides under mild conditions.

Abstract:A highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporating two kinds of second building units (SBUs), i.e., dimeric paddlewheel (Zn-2 (COO)(4)) and tetrameric (Zn-4(O) (CO2)(6)), is successfully assembled by the reaction of a tricarboxylate ligand with Zn-II ion. Subsequently, single-crystal-to-single-crystal metal cation exchange using the constructed MOF is investigated, and the results show that Cu-II and Co-II ions can selectively be introduced into the MOF without compromising the crystallinity of the pristine framework. This metal cation-exchangeable MOF provides a useful platform for studying the metal effect on both gas adsorption and catalytic activity of the resulted MOFs. While the gas adsorption experiments reveal that Cu-II and Co-II exchanged samples exhibit comparable CO2 adsorption capability to the pristine Zn-II-based MOF under the same conditions, catalytic investigations for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides into related carbonates demonstrate that Zn-II-based MOF affords the highest catalytic activity as compared with Cu-II and Co-II exchanged ones. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these constructed MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. Abstract:The Cover Feature shows three Co‐based isostructural Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with expanded pores for the selective capture and catalytic conversion of carbon Dioxide. In their Full Paper, W. Meng et al. finely tune the pore sizes of the MOF‐74‐III(Co) materials by varying the amounts of fused benzene rings incorporated into the side chain of same‐length ligands. This series of materials demonstrates high selectivity in CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation, and high activity in CO2 cycloaddition catalysis. More information can be found in the Full Paper by W.
