Abstract:We show that self-dual gravity in Euclidean four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_4$) can be described by a minimally coupled scalar field with a cubic interaction written in terms of a deformed Poisson bracket, providing a remarkably simple generalisation of the Plebanski action for self-dual gravity in flat space. This implies a novel symmetry algebra in self-dual gravity, notably an AdS$_4$ version of the so-called kinematic algebra. We also obtain the 3-point interaction vertex of self-dual gravity in AdS$_4$ from that of self-dual Yang-Mills by replacing the structure constants of the Lie group with the structure constants of the new kinematic algebra, implying that self-dual gravity in AdS$_4$ can be derived from self-dual Yang-Mills in this background via a double copy. This provides a concrete starting point for defining the double copy for Einstein gravity in AdS$_4$ by expanding around the self-dual sector. Moreover, we show that the new kinematic Lie algebra can be lifted to a deformed version of the $w_{1+\infty}$ algebra, which plays a prominent role in celestial holography.

Noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions and its dual

Abstract:We consider the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in noncommutative three dimensional space-time. We show that the Seiberg-Witten map is ambiguous due to the dimensional coupling constant. To get the dual theory we start from a master action obtained by promoting the global shift invariance to a local one. We also obtain the mapping between the observables of the two equivalent theories. We show that the equivalence between the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and the self-dual model in commutative space-time does not survive in the non-commutative setting.

Abstract:There exists a large class of models which are self-dual with respect to inversion of coupling constants. When a theta term is added, this duality may be extended to an invariance under an action of an infinite discrete modular group on the coupling parameter space. In particular, four-dimensional abelian lattice gauge theories possess a Sp(2k, Z) modular symmetry, where k is the number of simple factors in the gauge group. We generalize this result to models of arbitrary dimension, and show that the partition functions of two-dimensional ZN spin models with 2k flavors and string compactifications on k-dimensional tori are invariant under O(k, k; Z). We also draw some suggestive parallels to the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:In this work, we determine explicitly the anomaly line bundle of the abelian self-dual field theory over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms, including its torsion part. Inspired by the work of Belov and Moore, we propose a non-covariant action principle for a pair of Euclidean self-dual fields on a generic oriented Riemannian manifold. The corresponding path integral allows one to study the global properties of the partition function over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. We show that the anomaly bundle for a pair of self-dual fields differs from the determinant bundle of the Dirac operator coupled to chiral spinors by a flat bundle that is not trivial if the underlying manifold has middle-degree cohomology, and whose holonomies are determined explicitly. We briefly sketch the relevance of this result for the computation of the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory, that will appear in another paper.

Abstract:We exploit a new theory of duality transformations to construct dual representations of models incompatible with traditional duality transformations. Hence we obtain a solution to the long-standing problem of non-Abelian dualities that hinges on two key observations: (i) from the point of view of dualities, whether the group of symmetries of a model is or is not Abelian is unimportant, and (ii) the new theory of dualities that we exploit includes traditional duality transformations, but also introduces in a natural way more general transformations.

Abstract:A positive semi-definite Euclidean action for arbitrary four-topologies can be constructed by adding appropriate Yang-Mills and topological terms to the Samuel-Jacobson-Smolin action of gravity with (anti)self-dual variables. Moreover, on-shell, the (anti)self-dual sector of the new theory corresponds precisely to all Einstein manifolds in four dimensions. The Lorentzian signature action, and its analytic continuations are also considered. A self-contained discussion is given on the effects of discrete transformations C, P and T on the Samuel-Jacobson-Smolin action, and other proposed actions which utilize self- or anti-self-dual variables as fundamental variables in the description of four-dimensional gravity.

Abstract:A 3-dimensional reduction of the seld-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) equation, named SDYM3, is examined from the point of view of its symmetry and integrability characteristics. By using a non-auto-Backlund transformation, this equation is connected to its potential form (PSDYM3) and a certain isomorphism between the Lie algebras of symmetries of the two systems is shown to exist. This isomorphism allows us to study the infinite-dimensional Lie algebraic structure of the "potential symmetries" of SDYM3 by examining the symmetry structure of PSDYM3 (which is an easier task). By using techniques described in a recent paper, the recursion operators for both SDYM3 and PSDYM3 are derived. Moreover, a Lax pair and an infinite set of nonlocal conservation laws for SDYM3 are found, reflecting the fact that SDYM3 is a totally integrable system. This system may physically represent gravitational fields or chiral fields.

Abstract:In this work, we study (anti-)self duality conditions in unconventional conformal supersymmetry. We focus on a theory constructed in a Townsend-MacDowell-Mansouri form for an $SU(2,2|N)$ gauge connection with matter fields in the adjoint representation. We found bosonic solutions that correspond to analytic gravitational instantons with nontrivial torsion. These configurations can be regarded as the torsional generalization of the Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS and Eguchi-Hanson metric and they are (anti-)self-dual with respect to a generalized dual operator. We explore their global properties and show that they saturate a BPS bound.

Alternative Self-dual Gravity in Eight Dimensions

Abstract:We develop an alternative Ashtekar formalism in eight dimensions. In fact, using a MacDowell-Mansouri physical framework and a self-dual curvature symmetry we propose an action in eight dimensions in which the Levi-Civita tenor with eight indices plays a key role. We explicitly show that such an action contains number of linear, quadratic and cubic terms in the Riemann tensor, Ricci tensor and scalar curvature. In particular, the linear term is reduced to the Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant in eight dimensions. We prove that such a reduced action is equivalent to the Lovelock action in eight dimensions.

Higgs Mechanism for the Ashtekar Self-Dual Connection

Abstract:We introduce the Higgs mechanism for the self-dual spin connection (also known as the Ashtekar connection), using the Plebański formulation of gravity. We develop our formalism within the framework of the chiral action and derive the equations of motion of the theory. One particular test model is explored: since anisotropy is an intrinsic property of the theory, a modified version of the spatially flat Bianchi I model with two different scale factors is considered. We apply our formalism and derive the Friedmann equations which regulate the scale factors and the Higgs field. We also present a Proca-like term for the connection, which when reduced to minisuperspace with a positive $\Lambda$ yields a De Sitter universe with an effective cosmological constant that depends on the mass of the gauge fields. We finally investigate the effect of these mass terms on gravitational waves and find that the wave equation remains unchanged relatively to GR; however the Weyl tensor is scaled by a constant which depends on the mass of the connection components.

Duality in a 3D Field-Theoretic Model

Abstract:We demonstrate the duality symmetry between the Abelian 1-form and 2-form basic gauge fields in the context of a three (2 + 1)-dimensional (3D) combined system of the field-theoretic model for the free Abelian 1-from and 2-form gauge theories within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism where the classical gauge-fixed Lagrangian density of this theory is generalized to its quantum counterpart as the BRST and co-BRST invariant Lagrangian density. We show clearly the existence of the off-shell nilpotent (co-)BRST symmetry transformations and establish their intimate connection through a set of underlying discrete duality symmetry transformations in our BRST-quantized theory. We briefly mention a bosonic symmetry transformation which is generated from the anticommutator of the above (co-)BRST symmetry transformations. We lay emphasis on the algebraic structures of the existing continuous as well as the discrete symmetry transformations in our theory (where they are treated as operators).

Abstract:We construct cosmological spacetimes with a self-dual Weyl tensor whose dynamics are described by conformally coupled scalars with only cubic self-interactions. Similar to the previously discovered cases in flat and (Anti) de Sitter backgrounds, the interactions are characterized by a bracket that encodes a kinematic algebra. We discuss how the color-kinematics duality and double copy are realized in these cosmological backgrounds. If we further impose that the Ricci scalar is that of an FLRW spacetime, we find two new self-dual metrics corresponding to radiation-dominated and coasting (non-accelerating) FLRW backgrounds. Relaxing this requirement, we find an infinite family of solutions given by three different conformal classes of cosmological self-dual metrics. These solutions approximate those of FLRW as long as we impose a simple additional constraint on the scalar theory.

Abstract:In several elementary particle scenarios, self-dual fields emerge as fundamental degrees of freedom. Some examples are the D = 2 chiral boson, D = 10 Type IIB supergravity, and D = 6 chiral tensor multiplet theory. For those models, a novel variational principle has been proposed in the work of Ashoke Sen. The coupling to supergravity of self-dual models in that new framework is rather peculiar to guarantee the decoupling of unphysical degrees of freedom. We generalize this technique to the self-dual super Maxwell gauge theory in D = 4 Euclidean spacetime both in the component formalism and the superspace. We use the geometric tools of rheonomy and integral forms since they are very powerful geometrical techniques for the extension to supergravity. We show the equivalence between the two formulations by choosing a different integral form defined using a Picture Changing Operator. That leads to a meaningful action functional for the variational equations. In addition, we couple the model to a non-dynamical gravitino to extend the analysis slightly beyond the free case. A full-fledged self-dual supergravity analysis will be presented elsewhere.

Abstract:We present local nilpotent fermionic symmetry with a vector-spinor as its gauge field in D=2+2 space-time dimensions. Our field-content is (AμI,ψμI,χI) , where I=1,2,⋯,g≡dim G is the adjoint-index of a gauge group G , while ψμI and χI are Majorana spinors. The field strengths FμνI of AμI and RμνI of ψμI satisfy the self-duality conditions FμνI=+(1/2)εμνρσFρσI and RμνI=+(1/2)εμνρσRρσI . The lowest flow of super-KdV equations and super-KP equations are embedded into this system in ways more natural than the conventional supersymmetric self-dual theories in D=2+2 . This indicates that our theory even without supersymmetry in D=2+2 can serve as the "Master Theory" of all supersymmetric integrable systems in lower dimensions. Our D=2+2 result is further generalized to D=n+n(n=3,4,⋯) with the field content (AμI,ψμI,χI,Bμ1⋯μn−3) , with the (n−3) -rank auxiliary Abelian tensor Bμ1⋯μn−3 . The generalized self-dual conditions are and . We conjecture that our theory in D=n+n is the "Grand-Master Theory" of all supersymmetric integrable systems in lower dimensions.

Abstract:We investigate the $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric generalization of the dual equivalence between the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model and two massive self-dual models. One of the self-dual models is described by a real scalar superfield, while the other is described by a chiral spinor superfield. The equivalence is analyzed in the presence of dynamical matter chiral superfields. Initially, we establish the duality by demonstrating the existence of master actions that interpolate between the models. We then show that the field equations are identical when the proper identifications are made. Finally, we confirm the dual equivalence by defining a master generating functional, which, after changing the variables, provides the generating functionals of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model and the two massive self-dual models coupled to matter.
