Abstract:Abstract Selective attention is necessary to sift through, form a coherent percept of, and make behavioral decisions on the vast amount of information present in most sensory environments. How and where selective attention is employed in cortex and how this perceptual information then informs the relevant behavioral decisions is still not well understood. Studies probing selective attention and decision making in visual cortex have been enlightening as to how sensory attention might work in that modality; whether or not similar mechanisms are employed in auditory attention is not yet clear. Therefore, we trained rhesus macaques on a feature selective attention task, where they switched between reporting changes in temporal (amplitude modulation, AM) and spectral (carrier bandwidth) features of a broadband noise stimulus. We investigated how the encoding of these features by single neurons in primary (A1) and secondary (lateral belt, ML) auditory cortex were affected by the different attention conditions. We found that neurons in A1 and ML showed mixed-selectivity to the sound and task features. We found no difference in AM encoding between the attention conditions. We found that choice-related activity in both A1 and ML neurons shifts between attentional conditions. This finding suggests that choice-related activity in auditory cortex does not simply reflect motor preparation or action, and supports the relationship between reported choice-related activity and the decision and perceptual process. New & Noteworthy We recorded from primary and secondary auditory cortex while monkeys performed a non-spatial feature attention task. Both areas exhibited rate-based choice-related activity. The manifestation of choice-related activity was attention-dependent, suggesting that choice-related activity in auditory cortex does not simply reflect arousal or motor influences, but relates to the specific perceptual choice. The lack of temporal-based choice activity is consistent with growing evidence that subcortical, but not cortical, single neurons inform decisions through temporal envelope following.

Abstract:Responses of neurons in inferior temporal cortex during memory-guided visual search. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 2918-2940, 1998. A typical scene will contain many different objects, few of which are relevant to behavior at any given moment. Thus attentional mechanisms are needed to select relevant objects for visual processing and control over behavior. We examined this role of attention in the inferior temporal cortex of macaque monkeys, using a visual search paradigm. While the monkey maintained fixation, a cue stimulus was presented at the center of gaze, followed by a blank delay period. After the delay, an array of two to five choice stimuli was presented extrafoveally, and the monkey was rewarded for detecting a target stimulus matching the cue. The behavioral response was a saccadic eye movement to the target in one version of the task and a lever release in another. The array was composed of one "good" stimulus (effective in driving the cell when presented alone) and one or more "poor" stimuli (ineffective in driving the cell when presented alone). Most cells showed higher delay activity after a good stimulus used as the cue than after a poor stimulus. The baseline activity of cells was also higher preceding a good cue, if the animal expected it to occur. This activity may depend on a top-down bias in favor of cells coding the relevant stimulus. When the choice array was presented, most cells showed suppressive interactions between the stimuli as well as strong attention effects. When the choice array was presented in the contralateral visual field, most cells initially responded the same, regardless of which stimulus was the target. However, within 150-200 ms of array onset, responses were determined by the target stimulus. If the target was the good stimulus, the response to the array became equal to the response to the good stimulus presented alone. If the target was a poor stimulus, the response approached the response to that stimulus presented alone. Thus the influence of the nontarget stimulus was eliminated. These effects occurred well in advance of the behavioral response. When the array was positioned with stimuli on opposite sides of the vertical meridian, the contralateral stimulus appeared to dominate the response, and this dominant effect could not be overcome by attention. Overall, the results support a "biased competition" model of attention, according to which 1) objects in the visual field compete for representation in the cortex, and 2) this competition is biased in favor of the behaviorally relevant object by virtue of "top-down" feedback from structures involved in working memory.
Neurophysiological Implementation of a Scheme for Visual Selective Attention

Abstract:Abstract : The method of single cell recording in the behaving monkey was used to study mechanisms of selective attention in extrastriate cortex. The animal indicated whether any item in a display of one or more colour patches matched a previously presented target. Recordings were obtained from 186 single cells in cortical area V4. In the match task, attentional selection of the target patch must be controlled by an advance description of the target colour. No evidence for such enduring target descriptions was found in V4: Few if any units showed sustained, target-specific activity. While there was clear evidence for attentional modulation of the visual response, this modulation was quite different from that previously reported for a location selection task. Units did not always respond more strongly when attention was directed to a patch of their preferred colour; instead the distribution of attentional preferences was bimodal, with roughly half the cells giving stronger responses when their preferred colour was ignored. Such effects, furthermore, were dependent only on preferences for colour (the relevant dimension); location preferences seemed immaterial. The findings are inconsistent with hypotheses for attentional selection based on either input gating or selective priming. Alternative possibilities are discussed.

Abstract:Attention can be deployed in multiple forms and facilitates behavior by influencing perceptual sensitivity and choice bias. Attention is also associated with a myriad of changes in sensory neural activity. Yet, the relationship between the behavioral components of attention and the accompanying changes in neural activity remains largely unresolved. We examined this relationship by quantifying sensitivity and bias in monkeys performing a task that dissociated eye movement responses from the focus of covert attention. Unexpectedly, bias, not sensitivity, increased at the focus of covert attention, whereas sensitivity increased at the location of planned eye movements. Furthermore, neuronal activity within visual area V4 varied robustly with bias, but not sensitivity, at the focus of covert attention. In contrast, correlated variability between neuronal pairs was lowest at the location of planned eye movements, and varied with sensitivity, but not bias. Thus, dissociable behavioral components of attention exhibit distinct neuronal signatures within the visual cortex.

Abstract:Attention exerts a powerful influence on visual perception. The impact of attention on neuronal activity manifests at early visual information processing stages and progressively increases throughout the visual cortical hierarchy. However, the neuronal mechanisms of attention are unresolved. In particular, the rules governing attentional modulation of individual neurons, whether they are facilitated by or suppressed by attention, are not known. To obtain a more granular or neuron- and circuit-level understanding of the mechanisms of attention and to directly test the feature similarity gain model in V1, we compared attentional modulation with neuronal feature selectivity across a large population of V1 neurons in alert and behaving macaque monkeys trained on an attention-demanding contrast-change detection task. We utilized emerging multi-electrode array technology to record simultaneously from V1 neurons spanning all six cortical layers so that we could characterize the laminar position and physiological response properties of diverse V1 neuronal populations. We found significant relationships between attentional modulation and neuronal position within the cortical hierarchy, neuronal physiology, and neuronal feature selectivity. Our results support the feature similarity gain model and further suggest that attentional modulation depends critically upon the match between neuronal feature selectivity and the features required for the task.
Modulation of Neuronal Responses by Exogenous Attention in Macaque Primary Visual Cortex

Abstract:Visual perception is influenced by attention deployed voluntarily or triggered involuntarily by salient stimuli. Modulation of visual cortical processing by voluntary or endogenous attention has been extensively studied, but much less is known about how involuntary or exogenous attention affects responses of visual cortical neurons. Using implanted microelectrode arrays, we examined the effects of exogenous attention on neuronal responses in the primary visual cortex (V1) of awake monkeys. A bright annular cue was flashed either around the receptive fields of recorded neurons or in the opposite visual field to capture attention. A subsequent grating stimulus probed the cue-induced effects. In a fixation task, when the cue-to-probe stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) was <240 ms, the cue induced a transient increase of neuronal responses to the probe at the cued location during 40–100 ms after the onset of neuronal responses to the probe. This facilitation diminished and disappeared after repeated presentations of the same cue but recurred for a new cue of a different color. In another task to detect the probe, relative shortening of monkey's reaction times for the validly cued probe depended on the SOA in a way similar to the cue-induced V1 facilitation, and the behavioral and physiological cueing effects remained after repeated practice. Flashing two cues simultaneously in the two opposite visual fields weakened or diminished both the physiological and behavioral cueing effects. Our findings indicate that exogenous attention significantly modulates V1 responses and that the modulation strength depends on both novelty and task relevance of the stimulus. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Visual attention can be involuntarily captured by a sudden appearance of a conspicuous object, allowing rapid reactions to unexpected events of significance. The current study discovered a correlate of this effect in monkey primary visual cortex. An abrupt, salient, flash enhanced neuronal responses, and shortened the animal's reaction time, to a subsequent visual probe stimulus at the same location. However, the enhancement of the neural responses diminished after repeated exposures to this flash if the animal was not required to react to the probe. Moreover, a second, simultaneous, flash at another location weakened the neuronal and behavioral effects of the first one. These findings revealed, beyond the observations reported so far, the effects of exogenous attention in the brain.

Abstract:Visual perception is profoundly modulated by spatial attention, which can selectively prioritize goal-related information. Previous studies found spatial attention facilitated the efficacy of neuronal communication between visual cortices with hierarchical organizations. In the primary visual cortex (V1), there is also a hierarchical connection between simple (S) and complex (C) cells. We wonder whether and how spatial attention modulates neuronal communication within V1, especially for neuronal pairs with heterogeneous visual input. We simultaneously recorded the pairs’ activity from macaque monkeys when they performed a spatial-attention-involved task, then applied likelihood-based Granger causality analysis to explore attentional modulation of neuronal interactions. First, a significant attention-related decrease in Granger causality was found in S-C pairs, which primarily displayed in the S-to-C feedforward connection. Second, the interaction strength of the feedforward connection was significantly higher than that of the feedback under attend toward (AT) conditions. Although information flow did not alter as the attentional focus shifted, the strength of communications between target- and distractor-stimuli-covered neurons differed only when attending to complex cells’ receptive fields (RFs). Furthermore, pairs’ communications depended on the attentional modulation of neurons’ firing rates. Our findings demonstrate spatial attention does not induce specific information flow but rather amplifies directed communication within V1.

Abstract:Attention to a location in a visual scene affects neuronal responses in visual cortical areas in a retinotopically specific manner. Optical imaging studies have revealed that cortical responses consist of two components of different sizes: the stimulus-nonspecific global signal and the stimulus-specific mapping signal (domain activity). It remains unclear whether either or both of these components are modulated by spatial attention. In this study, to determine the spatial distribution of attentional modulation at columnar resolution, we performed cerebral blood volume (CBV)-based optical imaging in area V4 of monkeys performing a color change detection task in which spatial attention was manipulated. We found that spatial attention enhanced global signals of the hemodynamic responses, but did not affect stimulus-selective domain activities. These results indicate the involvement of global signals in neural processing of spatial attention. We propose that global signals reflect the neural substrate of the normalization pool in normalization models of attention.

Abstract:Monkeys with bilateral removal of caudal prefrontal cortex (area 8) or dorso-lateral parietal cortex (areas 5 and 7) or the inferior temporal cortex (area TE) were presented with two versions of a go-left/go-right visuo-spatial discrimination. In the first task they had to displace either the left or right of two identical plaques according to whether both plaques were black or white respectively. There were no performance differences among groups. In the second task, the two plaques were always red and the appropriate response was indicated by whether a spatially remote third plaque was black or white. Both the prefrontal and parietal groups were impaired relative to the inferotemporal group on this task. The results indicate that whether an impairment occurs on a task that is thought to test the perception of egocentric space may depend on whether the animal has to notice and attend to a remote cue, and that an attentional disorder may also explain impairments reported on tests of allocentric perception where the critical cue is spatially remote from the response site.

Abstract:Abstract Attention can be deployed in different ways: When searching for a taxi in New York City, we can decide where to attend (e.g., to the street) and what to attend to (e.g., yellow cars). Although we use the same word to describe both processes, nonhuman primate data suggest that these produce distinct effects on neural tuning. This has been challenging to assess in humans, but here we used an opportunity afforded by multivariate decoding of MEG data. We found that attending to an object at a particular location and attending to a particular object feature produced effects that interacted multiplicatively. The two types of attention induced distinct patterns of enhancement in occipital cortex, with feature-selective attention producing relatively more enhancement of small feature differences and spatial attention producing relatively larger effects for larger feature differences. An information flow analysis further showed that stimulus representations in occipital cortex were Granger-caused by coding in frontal cortices earlier in time and that the timing of this feedback matched the onset of attention effects. The data suggest that spatial and feature-selective attention rely on distinct neural mechanisms that arise from frontal-occipital information exchange, interacting multiplicatively to selectively enhance task-relevant information.

Abstract:Visual-spatial selective attention enhances the processing of task-relevant visual events while suppressing the processing of irrelevant ones. In this study, we employed a frequency-tagging paradigm to investigate how sustained visual-spatial attention modulates the first harmonic and second harmonic steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). Unlike previous studies, that investigated stimulation durations of 10 s or less, we tested a 30-s period. SSVEPs were elicited by simultaneously presenting to the right and left visual hemifields two pattern reversal checkerboard stimuli modulating at 7.14 Hz and 11.11 Hz. Participants were cued to selectively attend to one visual hemifield while ignoring the other. Behavioral results indicated that participants selectively attended to the cued visual hemifield. When participants attended to the visual stimuli, there were larger second harmonic SSVEPs but no attentional modulation of first harmonics. The results are consistent with the proposal that neural populations underlying first, and second harmonics have distinct functional roles, i.e., first harmonics’ mechanisms preserve stimulus properties and are resistant to attentional gain, whereas second harmonics mediate attentional modulation. This interpretation is supported by a gain control theory of selective attention.

Intrauterine insemination with washed sperm.

Abstract:Intrauterine insemination with washed semen has been carried out in our department since the beginning of 1986. Couples are examined carefully according to the principles of WHO before entering the program. The cycles of those couples treated by intrauterine insemination were monitored. Oestradiol values showed the highest levels on days 13 and 14, such as the size of folliculi, and serum progesterone level increased on days 14 and 15 ovulatory cycle. Insemination was performed with washed sperm after cleansing from it different albumin components and bacteria; the insemination was carried out in two groups. Good results were achieved in cases where the poor quality or hostility of the cervical mucus was the cause of infertility. The treatment can be successful if the spermiogram does not show severe deviation. No success can be expected in severe deviation of the spermiogram.
Bottom-up saliency and top-down learning in the primary visual cortex of monkeys.

Abstract:Early sensory cortex is better known for representing sensory inputs but less for the effect of its responses on behavior. Here we explore the behavioral correlates of neuronal responses in primary visual cortex (V1) in a task to detect a uniquely oriented bar-the orientation singleton-in a background of uniformly oriented bars. This singleton is salient or inconspicuous when the orientation contrast between the singleton and background bars is sufficiently large or small, respectively. Using implanted microelectrodes, we measured V1 activities while monkeys were trained to quickly saccade to the singleton. A neuron's responses to the singleton within its receptive field had an early and a late component, both increased with the orientation contrast. The early component started from the outset of neuronal responses; it remained unchanged before and after training on the singleton detection. The late component started ∼40 ms after the early one; it emerged and evolved with practicing the detection task. Training increased the behavioral accuracy and speed of singleton detection and increased the amount of information in the late response component about a singleton's presence or absence. Furthermore, for a given singleton, faster detection performance was associated with higher V1 responses; training increased this behavioral-neural correlate in the early V1 responses but decreased it in the late V1 responses. Therefore, V1's early responses are directly linked with behavior and represent the bottom-up saliency signals. Learning strengthens this link, likely serving as the basis for making the detection task more reflexive and less top-down driven.

Abstract:Task demands can differentially engage two fundamental attention components: selectivity (spatial bias) and effort (total nonselective attentional intensity). The relative contributions and interactions of these components in modulating neuronal signals remain unknown. We recorded V4 neurons while monkeys' spatially selective attention and effort were independently controlled by adjusting either task difficulty or reward size at two locations. Neurons were robustly modulated by either selective attention or effort. Notably, increasing overall effort to improve performance at a distant site reduced neuronal responses even when performance was unchanged for receptive field stimuli. This interaction between attentional selectivity and effort was evident in single-trial spiking and can be explained by divisive normalization of spatially distributed behavioral performance at the single-neuron level. Changing motivation using task difficulty or reward produced indistinguishable effects. These results provide a cellular-level mechanism of how attention components integrate to modulate sensory processing in different motivational contexts.

Abstract:Neurons in the temporal visual cortical areas of primates have large receptive fields, which can show considerable selectivity for what the stimulus is irrespective of exactly where it is in the visual field. This is called translation invariance. However, such results have been found when there is only one stimulus in the visual field. The question arises of how the visual system operates in a cluttered environment. To investigate this we measured the responses of neurons with face-selective responses in the cortex in the anterior part of the superior temporal sulcus of rhesus macaques performing a visual fixation task. We found that the response of neurons to an effective face centred 8.5° from the fovea was decreased to 71% if an ineffective face stimulus for that cell was present at the fovea. In a similar way, introduction of a parafoveal ineffective face stimulus decreased the responses of these neurons to an effective face stimulus at the fovea to 75%. In addition to these interactions, it was found that an effective stimulus object at the fovea produced a larger response than when it was parafoveal, and that this weighting towards an object at the fovea was also seen when more than one object was present in the visual field. The implication of this weighting of the responses of neurons towards objects at the fovea, even in an environment with more than one object present, is that the output of the visual system provides information to subsequent systems particularly about objects at the fovea, so that learning about these objects (and less about other objects elsewhere in the visual field) is facilitated.
