Abstract:Purpose:To investigate the characteristics of quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) and its related parameters in Chinese ametropia children.Methods:This case series study enrolled 106 eyes of 53 children (male/female=29/24, age: 9.04 +/- 2.06 years). Examinations included manifest refraction, axial length, corneal curvature, and monocular and binocular qCSF readings without refractive correction (area under log CSF [AULCSF], CSF acuity, and contrast sensitivity [CS] at 1.0 to 18.0 cpd). The subjects were divided into groups according to age and refractive parameters for analysis.Results:The mean spherical equivalent (SE), AULCSF, and CSF acuity of the test eyes were -0.94 +/- 1.53 D, 0.44 +/- 0.33, and 8.50 +/- 5.97 cpd, respectively. In the monocular qCSF comparison, the refraction sphere (RS) was the major factor correlated with qCSF readings (B=0.186, P=0.009 for AULCSF; B=0.543, P=0.019 for CSF acuity; generalized linear model). The three groups stratified by RS/SE (<-1.00D, -1.00D to 0D, and >0D) showed significant differences in CS at medium spatial frequencies (3.0 and 6.0 cpd; all P<0.05). In the low RS/SE group (within -1 to 0 D), the CS at 12.0 cpd was significantly lower than that in the hyperopia group (all P<0.05). Binocular qCSF readings were significantly correlated with those of the eyes with lower RS (all P<0.05).Conclusion:RS and SE are the major contributing factors of qCSF without refractive correction in children. The CS at medium spatial frequencies decrease significantly as the RS/SE increase. In low myopia children, the CS at medium and high spatial frequencies are significantly decreased, providing practical value in visual function screening in children.

Abstract:To characterize quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) in keratoconus and its correlation with corneal topographic parameters. Patients with keratoconus (n = 120) who visited the Fudan Eye and ENT Hospital between April and June 2021 were enrolled in our study. A total of 215 eyes were subdivided into three groups according to maximum keratometry (Kmax): Group 1 (Kmax ≤ 48 D, 74 eyes), Group 2 (48 D < Kmax ≤ 55 D, 64 eyes), and Group 3 (Kmax > 55 D, 77 eyes). Manifest refraction, best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), corneal topography, and the qCSF test were examined. Intergroup comparisons and correlations among various corneal topographic parameters and qCSF were analyzed. Significant differences in the area under the log CSF (AULCSF) and CSF Acuity among the three groups were found, which decreased with an increase in Kmax. Contrast sensitivity (CS) between spatial frequencies of 3.0 to 18.0 cpd was significantly different (all P < 0.05) between Groups 1 and 2. The CS at all spatial frequencies was significantly different (all P < 0.05) between Group 3 and other two groups. At 3.0–18.0 cpd, CS decreased significantly (all P < 0.05) in Groups 1–3. Manifest refraction and topographic indices correlated significantly with qCSF parameters (all P < 0.05). Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that cylindrical refraction, logMAR BCVA, and index of surface variance had good predictive values for AULCSF and CSF Acuity. The use of qCSF test can serve as a feasible tool to evaluate visual quality and severity of keratoconus, since changes in CS significantly correlated with keratoconus severity.

Abstract:Purpose: Compare peripheral contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) between myopes and emmetropes to reveal potential myogenic risks during emmetropization. Materials and methods: This observational, cross-sectional, non-consecutive case study included data from 19 myopes (23.42 ± 4.03 years old) and 12 emmetropes (22.93 ± 2.91 years old) who underwent central and peripheral quick CSF (qCSF) measurements. Summary CSF metrics including the cut-off spatial frequency (cut-off SF), area under log CSF (AULCSF), low-, intermediate-, and high-spatial-frequency AULCSFs (l-, i-, and h-SF AULCSFs), and log CS at 19 SFs in the fovea and 15 peripheral locations (superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal quadrants at 6, 12, 18, and 24° eccentricities, excluding the physiological scotoma at 18°) were analyzed with 3-way and 4-way between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 0.05). Results: Three-way ANOVA showed that myopes had significantly increased AULCSF at 6° (mean difference, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.02–0.13; P = 0.007) and 12° (mean difference, 0.09; 95% CI, 0.03–0.14; P = 0.003). Log CS at all 19 SFs were higher in the myopia group compared to the normal group (mean differencesuperior, 0.02; 95% CI, 0.01–0.20; P = 0.02 and mean differenceinferior, 0.11; 95% CI, 0.02–0.21; P = 0.01) at 12°. The h-SF AULCSF at 6° (mean differenceinferior, 1.27; 95% CI, 0.32–2.22; P = 0.009) and i-SF AULCSF at 12° (mean differencesuperior, 5.31; 95% CI, 4.35–6.27; P < 0.001; mean differenceinferior, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.19–2.10; P = 0.02) were higher in myopia vs. normal group. Conclusion: We found myopia increased contrast sensitivity in superior and inferior visual field locations at 6° parafoveal and 12° perifoveal regions of the retina. The observation of increased contrast sensitivities within the macula visual field in myopia might provide important insights for myopia control during emmetropization.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the contrast sensitivity function (CSF), chorioretinal thickness and vascular density as well as their relationships in subjects with simple early-stage high myopia. Methods Eighty-one young subjects were enrolled in this study. They were categorized into the simple high myopia group (sHM, n = 51) and the low-moderate myopia group (control group, n = 30). Monocular CSF under best correction was measured with the qCSF method. Retinal superficial and deep vascular density, inner and outer retinal thickness and choroidal thickness were measured using optical coherence tomography angiography. Results The area under log CSF (AULCSF) and cutoff spatial frequency (Cutoff SF) of the sHM group were significantly reduced compared to those of the control group ( P = 0.003 and P < 0.001, respectively). The parafoveal and perifoveal retinal thickness, deep vascular density and choroidal thickness were also significantly reduced in the sHM group (all P < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that AULCSF was significantly correlated with retinal deep vascular density, outer retinal thickness in the parafoveal and perifoveal areas (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Compared to low to moderate myopic eyes, patients with simple high myopia have thinner retinal and choroidal thickness, lower retinal vascular density, and reduced contrast sensitivity. Moreover, the CSF was correlated with the measures of chorioretinal structure and vasculature. The results suggest that the CSF is a sensitive functional endpoint in simple early-stage high myopia.

Abstract:Objective:To study analyze sthe contrast sensitivity of high myopia.Methods:The contrast sensitivity function(CSF) in 60 eyes of 30 patients with high myopia was studied with normal subjects as control.Those with other ocular disease or systemic disease were excluded to avoid any possible affection.The patients were aged from 12 to 62 years.Corrected vision were all over 0.8 in high myopia,and the control was more than 1.0.The contrast sensitivity function was measured with CSV-1000E Vision Testing Instrument(provided by VECTOR VISION company).Results:The results revealed that the CSF of high myopia in each space-frequency range was decreased.The difference between high myopia group and control group was significant(P0.05).Conclusion:The CSF can be used as a criterion for the evaluation of high myopia.
Measuring the Contrast Sensitivity Function Using the Qcsf Method with 10 Digits

Abstract:Purpose The Bayesian adaptive quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) method with a 10-letter identification task provides an efficient CSF assessment. However, large populations are unfamiliar with letters and cannot benefit from this test. To overcome the barrier, we conducted this study. Method A new font for digits (0∼9) was created. The digits were then filtered with a raised cosine filter, rescaled to different sizes to cover spatial frequencies from 0.5 to 16 cycles per degree (cpd), and used as stimuli in a 10-alternative forced choice (10AFC) digit identification task. With the 10AFC digit identification task, the CSFs of five young and five old observers were measured using the qCSF and Psi methods. The estimates from the latter served as reference. Results The new digit font showed significantly improved similarity structure, Levene's test, F(1, 88) = 6.36, P = 0.014. With the 10-digit identification task, the CSFs obtained with the qCSF method matched well with those obtained with the Psi method (root mean square error [RMSE] = 0.053 log10 units). With approximately 30 trials, the precision of the qCSF method reached 0.1 log10 units. With approximately 75 trials, the precision of the CSFs obtained with the qCSF was comparable to that of the CSFs measured by the Psi method in 150 trials. Conclusions The qCSF with the 10 digit identification task is validated for both young and old observers. Translational Relevance The qCSF method with the 10-digit identification task provides an efficient and precise CSF test especially for people who are unfamiliar with letters.

Abstract:AIM:To study the contrast sensitivity of the lower to moderate and high myopia. ·METHODS: Forty patients with high myopia (80 eyes) were selected, age from 18 to 31(23 years average), with spherical equivalent -9.21D, then 40 patients with lower myopia (80 eyes), age from 18 to 30 (23.4 years average), with spherical equivalent -4.48D. We chose the 40 normal person, with visual acuity better than 1.0. In our experiment, all patients with the best spectacle corrected visual acuity. The contrast sensitivity and glare sensitivity were measured with Optec 6500. ·RESULTS:The results revealed that the CSF of the myopia in each space frequency range was decreased in the night mode. The patients with lower myopia and the high myopia were no significant in the day mode. The difference between the two groups was significant in the night mode in 1.5,3,12c/d. (P< 0.05).·CONCLUSION: The contrast sensitivity can be used as a criterion for the evaluation of the myopia.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To determine corneal Q value and its related factors in Chinese subjects older than 30 years.DESIGN: Cross sectional study.METHODS: 1,683 participants (1,683 eyes) from the Handan Eye Study were involved, including 955 female and 728 male with average age of 53.64 years old (range from 30 to 107 years). The corneal Q values of anterior and posterior surfaces were measured at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters using Bausch & Lomb Orbscan IIz (software version 3.12). Age, gender and refractive power were recorded.RESULTS: The average Q values of the anterior surface at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters were -0.28±0.18, -0.28±0.18, and -0.29±0.18, respectively. The average Q value of the anterior surface at the 5.0mm aperture diameter was negatively correlated with age (B = -0.003, p<0.01) and the refractive power (B = -0.013, p = 0.016). The average Q values of the posterior surface at 3.0, 5.0, and 7.0mm were -0.26±0.216, -0.26±0.214, and -0.26±0.215, respectively. The average Q value of the posterior surface at the 5.0mm aperture diameter was positively correlated with age (B = 0.002, p = 0.036) and the refractive power (B = 0.016, p = 0.043).CONCLUSION: The corneal Q value of the elderly Chinese subjects is different from that of previously reported European and American subjects, and the Q value appears to be correlated with age and refractive power.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) changes in simple high myopia (SHM) and evaluate the correlations between these changes with the early changes in the retinal microstructure. Methods: This prospective study comprised 81 subjects, 20 with emmetropia (EM), 26 with low myopia and moderate myopia (LM/MM), and 35 with SHM. The area under the log CSF curve (AULCSF) and the cut-off spatial frequency (Cut-off SF) were employed as measures of CSF. Adaptive optics (AO) was employed to quantify the cone density, spacing, and regularity. The thickness and blood flow of the retinal sublayers were determined from vertical and horizontal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) A-scans. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) was employed to analyze the choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity using a custom algorithm. Differences in the retinal and choroidal parameters, cone distribution, AULCSF, and Cut-off SF were compared among the three groups. Multivariate linear mixed models were used to elucidate the associations between photoreceptor morphological alterations, retinal and choroidal parameters, and AULCSF. Results: The AULCSF and Cut-off SF were significantly lower in the SHM group compared to the EM and LM groups ( p < 0.05). The SHM group had less cone density, larger cone spacing, and lower cone regularity than the EM and LM/MM groups ( p < 0.05). Moreover, the thickness of the inner segment of photoreceptors (IS), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer and choroid were reduced, and the outer segment of photoreceptors (OS) was thicker in the SHM group compared to the EM and LM/MM groups (all p < 0.05). A longer axial length (AL) was correlated with decreased AULCSF, cone density, and cone spacing ( r = −0.800 to 0.752, all p < 0.050). Additionally, decreased CSF was correlated with lower cone density ( r = 0.338, p = 0.035). Conclusion: Decreased contrast sensitivity was observed in patients with SHM and cone density was significantly correlated with reduced AUCSF.

Abstract:Background and Objective: We sought to establish normative quantitative contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) values in healthy adult eyes and investigate the effect of age on qCSF. Patients and Methods: Healthy eyes underwent qCSF testing (adaptive sensory technology) and Snellen's visual acuity (VA). Descriptive statistics and mixed-effects multivariable linear regressions were evaluated. Results: A total of 334 eyes (290 patients) with median age 61 years (range 21 to 88) had qCSF values as follows: area under the log contrast sensitivity function curve: 1.18; contrast acuity: 1.32; contrast sensitivity (CS) at 1 cycle per degree (cpd): 1.32; CS at 1.5 cpd: 1.37; CS at 3 cpd: 1.38; CS at 6 cpd: 1.20; CS at 12 cpd: 0.69; CS at 18 cpd: 0.22. Linear reductions in qCSF values per decade of age ranged from −0.02 to −0.07 vs 0.01 for visual acuity (VA). Age had a greater effect on the majority of qCSF values than VA (beta standardized regression coefficient ranged from −0.309 to −0.141 for qCSF values vs 0.177 for VA). Conclusions: We herein establish a normative database for qCSF and quantify the effect of age on qCSF values, adding evidence towards the validation of qCSF as a clinical endpoint. Abstract:In this paper, it tries to extend the characteristics of human eyes’ contrast sensitivity Function(CSF) into (3D) space, but the experimental results show that the traditional characteristics of CSF have limitations in 3D space for lack of depth information. In order to investigate the characteristics of CSF in 3D space, traditional CSF tests are further developed to measure the corresponding properties of CSF with different inclined planes, and describe the 𝜃 − C S F characteristics of human eyes based on the inclined angles 𝜃 . According to the tests, the mathematical expression of 𝜃 − C S F is built up. In addition, the concept of spatial frequency in the direction of depth ( f D ) is proposed, and f D − C S F characteristic surface is also achieved. The proposed 3D CSF has significant effects on the research of human visual characteristics and 3D image processing.

Abstract:In this paper, we try to extend human eyes' contrast sensitivities characteristics (CSF) to three-dimensional space, but the experimental results show that the traditional characteristics of CSF has limitations in three-dimensional space. In order to investigate the characteristics of human eyes' CSF in three-dimensional space, the traditional CSF test method is developed to measure the corresponding values of CSF in different inclined planes in three-dimensional space. Human visual contrast sensitivity characteristics with different inclined angles. are analyzed, and the mathematical expression of theta-CSF is built up based on the experimental results. The proposed theta-CSF model of three-dimensional space in this paper can well reflects human visual contrast sensitivity characteristics in 3D space and has significant effect on three-dimensional image processing.
Quantifying the Functional Relationship Between Visual Acuity and Contrast Sensitivity Function

Abstract:Purpose: Studies have reported that individuals with certain ocular disorders may have significant decreases in contrast sensitivity function (CSF) despite having normal or near normal visual acuity (VA). This study seeks to elucidate this phenomenon by investigating the relationship between VA and CSF. Methods: We analyzed data from 14 eyes tested with Electronic Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy and quantitative CSF under four Bangerter foil conditions (n = 56). From the CSF data, we estimated peak gain, peak frequency, and contrast sensitivity acuity (CSA). We explored the correlations between VA and various CSF parameters and evaluated five predictive models of VA using CSA alone and in combination with additional CSF parameters through ridge regression. Results: We found that similar VA scores can correspond with markedly different CSFs and observed significant correlations among all CSF parameters and between VA and each CSF parameter (all P < 0.001). The most effective predictive model, incorporating CSA and peak gain, explained 90.97% of the variance with a root mean squared error of 0.0676 logMAR, which is comparable with the average standard deviation of the VA scores (0.0627 logMAR) and accounted for 38.6% of the residual variance not explained by the CSA-alone model. Conclusions: This study offers the first empirical inference of the quantitative relationship between VA and CSF, suggesting that various CSF parameter combinations can yield identical VA. This might help to explain why some clinical populations with normal or near-normal VA exhibit significant CSF deficits and calls for further research in different clinical settings.

Abstract:Objective: Correlation analysis of visual acuity, wavefront aberrations and contrast sensitivity in myopia. Methods: Retrospective study. One hundred and twelve patients with myopia(209 eyes) from April 2013 to August 2015 were enrolled in our study. All subjects were divided into various groups to investigate the relationship between wavefront aberrations and contrast sensitivity in myopic eyes.The correlations between ocular aberrations and contrast sensitivity(4 spatial frequency) in myopia eyes were analyzed using multivariate stepwise regression. Results: The AULCSF in the BCVA 1.2 were 1.32±0.10,1.30±0.12 respectively in the light and dark conditions,, which were higher than those in the BCVA 1.0 (t=-3.58 and-2.48, P<0.05). There was no significant difference between AULCSF in dark glare condition.At 4mm and 6mm pupil diameters,The difference in Z(-)(33) of ocular higher-order aberrations between the BCVA 1.0 and the BCVA 1.2 was statistically significant (t=2.09, P=0.04; t=-2.05, P=0.04). Differences between the other ocular higher-order aberrations and corneal aberrations were not statistically significant.The spherical aberrations of the low contrast sensitivity group were (0.019±0.010), (0.136±0.117) and(0.006±0.003)μm separately under the condition of bright light, dark light and dark glare light, which were higher than other groups (0.013±0.006) , (0.083±0.054) , (0.004±0.002) μm (t=1.10, 2.65, 2.44, P<0.05). The values of AULCSF for the larger spherical aberrations under dark light and dark glare light conditions were 1.281±0.126 and 1.216±0.154 respectively which were lower than the AULCSF 1.281±0.126, 1.216±0.154 of the another spherical aberrations group (t=2.14, 1.98, P<0.05). It was found that the S(All) RMS and spherical aberrations under different frequencies and illuminating conditions were negatively correlated with CS.Vertical coma was positively correlated with CS. Conclusions: Better BCVA may achieve better visual quality.In the case of the same BCVA, there are differences in visual quality.Higher order aberrations are the main factor affecting this result, especially the spherical aberrations.Total aberrations and spherical aberration had a negative correlation with visual quality.Vertical coma had a positive affects with visual quality. Abstract:Objective To investigate the contrast sensitivity of emmetropia,low or moderate myopia and high myopia patients in bright and dark circumstances,and then evaluate its visual function.Methods Three groups were divided according to power of refraction(emmetropia,low or moderate myopia and high myopia),38 cases in each group.CGT-1000 and Mesotest Ⅱb were used to test contrast sensitivity in bright and dark circumstances.Results In bright and glare conditions,the contrast sensitivity of myopia were lower than emmetropia(P<0.05);While in bright and no glare conditions,the contrast sensitivity of high myopia group was lower than both emmetropia and low or moderate myopia group(P<0.05),no significant differences was found between emmetropia and low or moderate myopia(P=0.087).In dark circumstances,the contrast sensitivity of high myopia group was lower than the other two groups(P<0.05).The contrast sensitivity under glare was lower than that of no glare in each group.Conclusions Both in dark and bright circumstances,the sequence of contrast sensitivity from high to low was emmetropia group,low or moderate myopia group,and high myopia group.High-order aberrations,fundus retrogressive changes and image minification may be the reason to lower contrast sensitivity in high myopia patients.
Contrast sensitivity function based on color difference under different fields

Abstract:In order to research the spatial characteristics of human vision system, the luminance and chromatic contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is measured for sinusoid wave patterns on a CRT displayer using the psychophysical method of interleaved staircase. Based on the CIELAB space, the contrast is defined as the ratio between color difference ΔE ab * and the average luminance L *, so that the luminance and chromatic CSF can be compared in the uniform scale. The luminance and chromatic CSF for the sinusoid wave patterns whose average color is neutral gray (L *=76, a *=b *=0) are measured under three field sizes of 10°, 6° and 2.44°, respectively, for spatial frequencies from 0.5 to 23.4 cycle /(°). The test data are fitted using different exponent functions. It is found that the peak luminance CSF values and the cross points of chromatic CSF curves of different color directions change with the field sizes. The ratio curves between the luminance CSF and the chromatic CSF under different fields are also obtained, which reflect the difference of human's sensitivity to the luminance and chromatic contrast.

Abstract:Contrast Sensitivity is one of the most important parts of visual function.Sine wave grating tests with parallel bars of varying width and contrast were broadly used in visual screening,early diagnosis,and therapeutic evaluation.Contrast Letter Charts,using optotypes instead of gratings,are much easier for patients to use.Nowadays,Pelli-Robson Charts has become the standard method not only in eye clinic but also in population based eye studies abroad.Mars Charts,based on the Pelli-Robson Charts,is more sensitive and easy to maintain.In addition,Mars Charts also use numbers as optotypes and will have great potential applications in China.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Mars numeral contrast sensitivity test and to explore whether it can be used in the examination of contrast sensitivity in low vision patients.Methods This was a prospective comparative study.Eighty-three subjects (83 eyes)were divided into two groups:a normal vision group,40 young adults without significant eye diseases whose habitual vision was better than 0.8,and a low-vision group,43 low-vision patients whose better eye's visual acuity ranged from 0.05 to 0.3.Subjects were tested with their corrected visual acuity.①The first examiner randomly selected three Mars numeral contrast sensitivity charts and recorded the contrast sensitivity scores after testing.②Subjects were tested randomly by the first examiner with one of three forms of the Mars numeral contrast sensitivity charts and the Mars letter contrast sensitivity charts.The contrast sensitivity scores were recorded for each test.③The second examiner used the same procedure used by the first examiner to test subjects and record contrast sensitivity scores.Repeatability and reproducibility were assessed based on intersession within-subject standard deviations (Sw),precision (1.96Sw),coefficient of variation (CVw),and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).The agreement between the Mars numeral contrast sensitivity test and the Mars letter contrast sensitivity test was evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis,ICC and Bland-Altman analysis.Results Repeatability and reproducibility:the Mars numeral contrast sensitivity test showed excellent repeatability and reproducibility,with a lower 1.96Sw,CVw,and high ICC values (higher than 0.75).Agreement between the Mars numeral contrast sensitivity test and the Mars letter contrast sensitivity test:there was excellent agreement between the two tests based on a high correlation (r=0.995,P＜0.01),high ICC (0.997),and narrow 95％ LoA confidence intervals (-0.053,0.092)logCS.Conclusion The Mars Numeral Contrast Sensitivity Test can be used for low-vision testing based on its high reliability and validity.
