Abstract:In this work, we present a novel method to model the attitude dynamics of a flexible spacecraft consisting of a rigid central body and a deformable appendage attached to it. The method is conceived to provide new instruments to address the problem of flexible dynamics modeling in a spacecraft, where an effective mathematical representation of the non-rigid behavior of the vehicle is of critical importance in the design of an effective and reliable attitude estimation and control system. The rigid-flexible modeling problem that generally arises from coupling the attitude dynamics of the main body with the dynamics of the deformable elastic appendage is tackled using the recently developed Theory of Functional Connections (TFC). This is a mathematical framework to perform functional interpolation with applications in many fields being currently discovered and investigated. In the proposed method, the continuous deformable structure is approximated by the TFC constrained expression, while the system state variables are defined as the coefficients used to represent the free function in a basis of orthogonal polynomials. This leads to a system that, despite being continuous and thus formed of an infinite number of material points, is modeled using a finite number of state variables allowing for the use of Kalman filter to deal with the uncertainties intrinsic in both the modeling and measurements. In the first part of this work, the derivation of a dynamic model based on the TFC is shown for a simple beam cantilevered to a fixed wall. In this case, the result is achieved by exploiting the Differential Equation for a vibrating Euler-Bernoulli beam. In the next part, the proposed approach is extended to the more general case of a main rigid body connected to a flexible beam whose flexible mechanics is described by the Euler-Bernoulli model. The derivation of the set of Differential Equations governing the dynamics of the system is obtained from the Lagrangian mechanics principles using the constrained expression free function coefficients as generalized coordinates. Finally, an application example is proposed where the cantilevered beam TFC-based model is used as the process model into a classic Kalman filter to improve the estimate of the dynamics of the vibrating structure based on a limited number of noisy measurements. A description of the mathematical aspects of implementing the TFC-based model into the estimation procedure is provided to the reader along with the results from numerical simulations of the technique showing its effectiveness in estimating the actual dynamics of a flexible structure in the presence of noisy measurements and using a limited set of Ordinary Differential Equations. The technique yielded good results both for the free response and in the case of a forcing input to the system.
