Abstract:We investigate the thermoelectric properties of ultrathin graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilms based on first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. Staircase-like densities of states induced by quantum confinement in the nanofilms give rise to improved Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities. The optimized figure of merit for the single-layer graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilm is estimated to be 0.6 at 300 K, which is about 120 times larger than that of bulk ZnO (0.005). Our results suggest that the graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilms can be designed for high performance thermoelectric applications. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. The Abnormally Excellent Figure of Merit of 14,14,18-Graphyne at Room Temperature: A Study on the Thermoelectric Characteristic of Graphyne

Abstract:The application of carbon-based nanomaterials in the field of thermoelectric is enormously restricted for its high thermal conductivity. Graphyne, as the allotrope of graphene, expresses low thermal conductivity; therefore, it can be expected to break the limitation of carbon-based materials in thermoelectric field. By using the first-principles calculation combined with the Boltzmann theory, the thermoelectric properties of types of graphynes, i.e., 6,6,6-, 6,6,12-, 14,14,18-, and 18,18,18-graphyne, are systematically investigated. It is interesting to find that 14,14,18-graphyne presents excellent thermoelectric properties, whose maximum value of ZT can reach 1.6 at room temperature; therefore, it can be seen as an excellent carbon-based thermoelectric material. More importantly, its ZT at low temperature is abnormally higher than that at high temperature, which breaks the traditional view that the higher ZT exists in a high temperature range. Furthermore, it can also be noticed that the other three types of graphynes exhibit unexpected special thermoelectric properties: (1) 6,6,6-graphyne shows the highest Seebeck coefficient; however, its ZT value is the lowest. Moreover, its ZT value for n-type doping is twice as that for p-type doping. (2) The ZT of 6,6,12-graphyne expresses enormous anisotropy, whose value along the zigzag direction is even 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than that along the armchair direction. (3) The ZT of 18,18,18-graphyne shows completely opposite anisotropy compared with the other three types of graphynes, and its ZT value along the armchair direction is higher. Our research provides some meaningful results for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of carbon-based nanomaterials, especially for the development of high-performance thermoelectric materials at room temperature.

Quasi-industrially Produced Large-Area Microscale Graphene Flakes Assembled Film with Extremely High Thermoelectric Power Factor

Abstract:The carbon-based nano materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets, are emerged as feasible thermoelectric materials with advantages of low material cost and highly functionalizable surface. However, difficulty on large area manufacture and the relative low power factor limit their applications. Here, starting from graphene flakes solution, we obtained a large area free-standing graphene assembled film longer than 2.0 m based on a quasi-industrial film casting method. Moreover, we successfully realize an enhanced graphene film with a high electrical conductivity of 1400 S cm(-1) and a resultant high thermoelectric power factor of 8.4 mu W cm(-1) K-2 at room temperature, as the highest value among graphene assembled thermoelectric film so far has been obtained. The high thermal power factor is achieved by ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution intercalation method, which efficiently enhances the hole density in graphene film. This large-size, quasi-industrially fabricated, flexible graphene assembled film has great applications in wasted heat harvesting as well as thermal and infrared sensors.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Bi2Te3 Based Graphene Nanocomposites

Abstract:Graphene in different vol% ranging from 0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 were uniformly incorporated in the nanostructured Bi2Te3 that was obtained from ball milling the coarse powder. The composite and the pristine Bi2Te3 powders were consolidated by the high frequency induction heated sintering. The thermoelectric properties of the bulks were investigated in the temperature range from 300 to 525 K. The effective thermal conductivities of the composites decrease with the reduction in the particle size of the pristine Bi2Te3 as well as with the addition of graphene attributed to enhanced phonon scattering from the phase boundaries. The significant increase in electrical conductivity accompanied by less decrease in the Seebeck coefficient at 1.5 vol% of graphene culminates in a high power factor. The results suggest that enhancement in power factor is attributed to quantum confinement effect through introduction of 2D graphene in Bi2Te3. Thus, reduction in thermal conductivity in conjunction with substantial improvement in power factor at 1.5 vol% of graphene leads to considerable enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit at similar to 500 K from pristine bulk. This work presents a novel strategy for development of high performance cost effective and scalable nanostructured thermoelectric bulk materials similar to Bi2Te3 based superlattices.
Mesoscopic combinatorial design of anisotropic graphitic carbon with ordered porous frameworks for thermoelectric conversion

Abstract:The incorporation of carbon materials can effectively enhance the performance of thermoelectric materials. By optimizing the thermoelectric properties of the carbon scaffold, it is possible to further improve the thermoelectric performance of the prepared carbon-based composites. To elevate the thermoelectric performance of the carbon scaffold, this work introduces a novel mesoscopic design strategy, utilizing natural flake graphite to create a three-dimensional ordered porous framework. Highly controllable anisotropic conductivity and thermal conductivity of the porous graphite skeleton were achieved, by combining sizable sodium chlorine templates (37.5–250 μm) with a natural flake graphite matrix (50–150 μm). A porous graphite with high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity along the vertical axis was obtained by carefully regulating the parameters. The sample demonstrated exceptional thermoelectric conversion performance, achieving a thermoelectric power factor of 12.2 μW·m −1 K −2 and a figure of merit value of 28.3 × 10 −4 . Furthermore, the thermoelectric property of the samples could be greatly improved by adding a small amount of ferric chloride, with a thermoelectric power factor reaching 41.9 × 10 −4 and a thermoelectric figure of merit reaching 81.4 μW·m −1 K −2 . This work provides an effective scheme for the mesoscopic regulation of porous graphite carbon structures and offers a new strategy for enhancing the performance of thermoelectric generators.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional material with extraordinary electrical, thermal, and elastic performance, is a potential candidate for future technologies. However, the superior properties of graphene have not yet been realized for graphenederived macroscopic structures such as graphene fibers. In this study, we systematically investigated the temperature (T)-dependent transport and thermoelectric properties of graphene fiber, including the thermal conductivity (λ), electrical conductivity (σ), and Seebeck coefficient (S). λ increases from 45.8 to 149.7 W·m–1·K–1 and then decreases as T increases from 80 to 290 K, indicating the boundary-scattering and three-phonon Umklapp scattering processes. σ increases with T from 7.1 × 104 to 1.18 × 105 S·m–1, which can be best explained by the hopping mechanism. S ranges from–3.9 to 0.8 μV·K–1 and undergoes a sign transition at approximately 100 K.
Thermoelectric Power Properties of Graphitic Nanotubule Bundles

Abstract:Thermoelectric power (TEP) properties of graphite nanotubule bundles were measured in the range 80–280 K. It was found that the TEP is positive and the magnitude at 280 K reaches about an order of +15 μV/K, far larger than that in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Moreover, in the studied range, the TEP can be approximately described by the formula S(μV)=0.167T−(70.2+0.085T)e−302.5/T derived based on a two-band model. The experimental results support such an idea that in the buckybundles both kinds of nanotubes, i.e., metallic tubes with a highly mobile velocity and semiconductive tubes with a narrow energy gap are included. The Fermi energy of the valence band for the metallic tubes is about −0.22 eV, and the average effective energy gap of the semiconductive tubes is estimated at about 52.2 meV. This conclusion is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:To develop light‐weight thermoelectric generators (TEGs) based on graphene, graphene's thermal conductivity needs to be substantially reduced. By developing all carbon graphene based composites with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon black (CB), the thermal conductivity is reduced substantially, whilst simultaneously improving the power factor of the material through Seebeck coefficient enhancement. Carbon‐based materials are becoming a promising candidate for thermoelectricity. Among them, graphene shows limited scope due to its ultra‐high thermal conductivity (κ). To develop graphene‐based thermoelectric devices, reduction of κ is highly desired while maintaining reasonably high electrical conductivity (σ). Herein, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon black (CB) fillers are added into few layered graphene (FLG) to produce all‐carbon composites yielding ultra‐low thermal conductivity (κ) desired for thermoelectric applications. The novel preparation method of pristine FLG realizes very low κ of 6.90 W m−1 K−1 at 1248 K, which further reduces to 0.57, 0.81, and 0.69 W m−1 K−1 at the same temperature for FLG + MWCNTs, FLG + CB, and FLG + MWCNTs + CB, respectively. As‐prepared FLG composites also maintain reasonably high σ, whilst the Seebeck coefficient shows over a factor of five improvement after the inclusion of carbon‐based fillers. Consequently, the power factor (PF) is significantly improved. The ultralow κ is attributed to the increased thermal boundary resistance among graphene sheet boundaries. The realization of ultralow κ with simultaneous improvement in Seebeck coefficients and relatively small drops in σ with a facile and unique synthesis technique, highlight the potential of these composites.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials have potential applications in waste heat recovery and solid-state cooling due to the direct energy conversion between heat and electricity. Among the reported materials, carbon-based materials have a promising prospect in commercialization due to their nontoxic and abundant properties and solution machinability. Based on density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), we have investigated the electronic and thermoelectric transport properties of schwarzite Cn (n is the chiral parameter of carbon nanotubes (n, 0)), a new carbon-based material. The carbon atoms at the junction of the material present a weak chemical bond state, and the charges are concentrated at the junction, which makes schwarzites have good conductivity and reactivity. In this paper, we select n = 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 to explore the properties of schwarzites. The dual-polarization effect promotes the peak thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) of this structure in the low-temperature region. Schwarzite C8 reaches a maximum zT value of 4.91 at 255 K, while schwarzite C11 achieves a maximum zT value of 4.61 at 360 K. This study provides a new type of carbon-based thermoelectric material, whose zT is higher than the existing carbon-based thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:The electronic transport of three kinds of ultrasmall single-wall carbon nanotubes are studied by using nonequilibrium Green's function method. It is found that the transmission function displays a clear stepwise structure that gives the number of electron channels. The calculated power factor of these nanotubes can be optimized to much higher. values in. a wide temperature, range. Using nonequilibrium molecule dynamics simulations; the lattice thermal conductivity of these nanotubes are predicated with quantum correction. Our calculations indicate that the (4,2) tube has relatively higher room temperature figure of merit (ZT value) compared with those of the (5,0) and (3,3) tubes. Moreover, the thermoelectric performance of these nanotubes can be greatly enhanced by surface design, formation of bundles, increasing the tube length, and so on, which significantly reduce the phonon and electron-derived thermal conductance.

Complementary n‐Type and p‐Type Graphene Films for High Power Factor Thermoelectric Generators

Abstract:Solution‐phase exfoliated graphene has always been an attractive material for flexible thermoelectric applications, but traditional oxidative routes suffer from poor flake quality and a lack of quality doping techniques to make complementary n‐type and p‐type films. Here, it is demonstrated that by changing the adsorbed surfactant during the intercalation‐exfoliation process (polyvinylpyrrolidone for n‐type, pyrenebutyric acid for p‐type), both extremely high electrical conductivity (3010 and 2330 S cm−1) and high Seebeck coefficients (53.1 and −45.5 µV K−1) can be achieved. The result is that both of these films show remarkable power factors, over 600 µW m−1 K−2 at room temperature, which is over an order of magnitude better than that in previous works demonstrating complementary n‐type and p‐type graphene thermoelectric films. Based on these films, a full all‐graphene thermoelectric device is constructed as a proof of concept, where a peak power of 5.0 nW is recorded at a temperature difference of 50 K.

Vertically Aligned and Interconnected Graphite and Graphene Oxide Networks Leading to Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of Polymer Composites

Abstract:Natural graphite flakes possess high theoretical thermal conductivity and can notably enhance the thermal conductive property of polymeric composites. Currently, because of weak interaction between graphite flakes, it is hard to construct a three-dimensional graphite network to achieve efficient heat transfer channels. In this study, vertically aligned and interconnected graphite skeletons were prepared with graphene oxide serving as bridge and support via freeze-casting method. Three freezing temperatures were utilized, and the resulting graphite and graphene oxide network was filled in a polymeric matrix. Benefiting from the ultralow freezing temperature of -196 °C, the network and its composite occupied a more uniform and denser structure, which lead to enhanced thermal conductivity (2.15 W m-1 K-1) with high enhancement efficiency and prominent mechanical properties. It can be significantly attributed to the well oriented graphite and graphene oxide bridges between graphite flakes. This simple and effective strategy may bring opportunities to develop high-performance thermal interface materials with great potential.
High figure-of-merit for ZnO nanostructures by interfacing lowly-oxidized graphene quantum dots

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology has potential for converting waste heat into electricity. Although traditional thermoelectric materials exhibit extremely high thermoelectric performances, their scarcity and toxicity limit their applications. Zinc oxide (ZnO) emerges as a promising alternative owing to its high thermal stability and relatively high Seebeck coefficient, while also being earth-abundant and nontoxic. However, its high thermal conductivity (>40 W m −1 K −1 ) remains a challenge. In this study, we use a multi-step strategy to achieve a significantly high dimensionless figure-of-merit ( zT ) value of approximately 0.486 at 580 K (estimated value) by interfacing graphene quantum dots with 3D nanostructured ZnO. Here, we show the fabrication of graphene quantum dots interfaced 3D ZnO, yielding the highest zT value ever reported for ZnO counterparts; specifically, our experimental results indicate that the fabricated 3D GQD@ZnO exhibited a significantly low thermal conductivity of 0.785 W m −1 K −1 (estimated value) and a remarkably high Seebeck coefficient of 556 μV K −1 at 580 K.

Abstract:Nanostructuring and second phase incorporation are considered to be promising ways of enhancing the thermoelectric performance of bulk materials. Here, a design principle is proposed which combines these two methods for improving the thermoelectric performance of p-type CoSb3 by fabricating a CoSb3/graphene (CoSb3/G) nanocomposite, where a second phase, graphene, is introduced in the nanostructured CoSb3 matrix via an in situ one-pot solvothermal route. In addition, CoSb3/G bulk materials were prepared by hot pressing the solvothermally synthesized CoSb3/G powder. It was found that addition of a small amount of graphene can drastically enhance the electrical conductivity due to the increase in both carrier concentration and mobility. In addition, the well dispersed graphene in the nanostructured CoSb3 matrix also contributes to the low lattice thermal conductivity. A dimensionless figure of merit ZT = 0.61 at 800 K has been obtained for the CoSb3/G nanocomposite, which is about a 130% improvement over that of graphene-free CoSb3 (similar to 0.26).

Abstract:Copper sulfide has received wide attention as a potential thermoelectric material with high performance and abundant resource. While the liquid-like Cu ions play an important role for the low kappa(L) and high ZT values, grain-boundary engineering is needed to further enhance the phonon scattering and the thermal stability of Cu2-xS. Here, we introduced the 3D graphene heterointerface into the Cu2-xS matrix by a facile technique combining mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). A significant ZT enhancement was realized with the highest ZT up to 1.56 and a high power factor of 1197 mu Wm(-1) K-2 at 873 K in the sample with 0.75 wt% graphene. Additionally, the composite showed excellent reproducibility of PF after five cycles testing from room temperature to 873 K, which confirmed the practical application potentiality of this composite.

Abstract:Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and nonequilibrium Green's function method, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of a series of zigzag and chiral carbon nanotubes which exhibit interesting diameter and chirality dependence. Our calculated results indicate that these carbon nanotubes could have higher ZT values at appropriate carrier concentration and operating temperature. Moreover, their thermoelectric performance can be significantly enhanced via isotope substitution, isoelectronic impurities, and hydrogen adsorption. It is thus reasonable to expect that carbon nanotubes may be promising candidates for high-performance thermoelectric materials.
