Abstract:The simple and accurate prediction of weaning outcomes is a recurrent topic in the intensive care unit (ICU). Up to 40 to 50% of patients in the ICU require mechanical ventilation ( 1,2 ); both premature and delayed weaning from the ventilator might increase the incidence of complications ( 3–7 ). Thus, daily screening of respiratory function by spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) is an important reference index to assess whether extubation is possible ( 8,9 ). However, after successful SBT and extubation, reintubation is required in 10% to 25% of patients and is associated with higher mortality ( 10,11 ). Hence, a safe and effective method is required to determine the optimum timing for terminating mechanical ventilation. However, no ideal indicator can predict weaning accurately, and the sensitivity and specificity were not balanced ( 12,13 ).
