Abstract:To improve the strength and plasticity of magnesium alloys, the Screw Twisted Extrusion (STE) process was proposed, which can refine the grain and weaken the basal texture of magnesium alloys. During the processes, the grains are refined by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and twin-induced dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviors, while the grain orientation rotates along the accumulated torsion direction accumulated so that the transverse direction (TD) titled texture is generated. The grain size of the sample after 16 passes STE (STE-16 P) was refined from about 14.36 μm to about 4.03 μm. Due to the grain refinement and texture weakening, the tensile yield strength (TYS) and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) are enhanced to 166 MPa and 340 MPa from 152 MPa and 239 MPa. In particular, the fracture elongation (EL) of the STE-16 P samples increased from 8.3% to 14.5% compared with the as-received (AS) samples.
