Abstract:Development of slow-release fertilizers can be considered an invaluable approach to overcome the limitations of the traditional chemical fertilizers through improving the fertilizer use efficiency and reducing the environmental pollutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of producing slow-release iron fertilizers using cellulose extracted from palm and pistachio wastes as a biodegradable coating material. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were used to identify the extracted cellulose and distinguish it from the pure cellulose powder. The slow-release iron fertilizers were then fabricated through a 2:1 (cellulose to iron sulfate) coating ratio, and their iron release kinetics were investigated in a 90-day soil incubation study. The iron bioavailability in the soil and its effects on the maize growth parameters were also examined through a completely randomized design with three replicates. Results showed a 33 and 28% cellulose extraction efficiencies for palm and pistachio wastes, respectively. The amount of the released iron in the soil treated with the prepared slow-release iron fertilizers was lower than that in the soil treated with non-coated iron sulfate compound. The power function kinetic model described the iron release kinetic data well. Moreover, the maximum maize growth parameters were obtained in the soil treated with the prepared slow-release iron fertilizers. Generally, the results of the present study revealed that the studied plant wastes have a great ability to be used as cellulose resources for the production of slow-release iron fertilizers.
