Abstract:Fertilizer consumption is increasing drastically along with the rapid expansion of farming in response to the ever-growing population. However, a significant portion of the nutrients in traditional fertilizers is lost during leaching and runoff causing economic loss and environmental threats. Polymer-modified controlled-release fertilizers provide an opportunity for mitigating adverse environmental effects and increasing the profitability of crop production. Here, we present a cheap and easy-to-fabricate controlled-release fertilizer excipient based on hydrogels scaffolded by safe and biodegradable chitosan and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays. By introducing elastic and flexible physical crosslinking induced by 2-dimensional (2D) MMT nanoflakes into the chitosan hydrogel, highly swellable and degradable chitosan-MMT nanocomposites were fabricated. The addition of MMT into the chitosan hydrogels enhanced the total release of phosphorous (P) and potassium (K), from 22.0 % to 94.9 % and 9.6% to 31.4 %, respectively, compared to the pure chitosan gel. The chitosan-MMT nanocomposite hydrogel achieved a well-controlled overall fertilizer release in soil. A total of 55.3 % of loaded fertilizer was released over 15 d with a daily release of 2.8 %. For the traditional fertilizer podwer, 89.2 % of the fertilizer was washed out during the first irrigation under the same setup. In the meantime, the nanocomposites improved the water retention of the soil, thanks to its excellent water absorbency. Moreover, the chitosan-MMT nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited high degradation of 57 % after swelling in water for 20 d. Such highly degradable fertilizer excipient poses minimal threat to the long-term fertility of the soil. The engineered Chitosan-MMT biopolymer scaffold as a controlled-release fertilizer excipient provides a promising opportunity for advancing sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:"This study aimed to synthesize a cellulose-based hydrogel as a new green fertilizer with slow-release properties. The cellulose-based hydrogel was prepared by reacting carboxymethyl cellulose solution with cellulose and was crosslinked with citric acid. The structure of the hydrogel was confirmed by FT-IR. The nitrogen fertilizers KNO3 and (NH4)2SO4 were loaded during the preparation. The swelling behavior of the hydrogel in deionized water was studied, in addition to the effects of pH, salinity, and drought on swelling behavior. Finally, the fertilizer release behavior in deionized water and a soil mix was investigated, in addition to the soil water content. The optimum hydrogel formulation (HG) showed good absorbance capacity – of 450%, and good durability for one month in deionized water. The swelling-deswelling studies revealed its sensitivity to different solutions. The HG loaded with nitrogen fertilizers showed slow, sustained release rates in deionized water and the soil mix; the cumulative release rates approached 70%, 65%, 60%, and 65%, respectively. Moreover, soil moisture was improved by the addition of the hydrogel by 100% on day 20 and reached 12% on day 30. The results were in accordance with the Committee of European Normalization standards. In conclusion, this new green hydrogel could be used in agricultural applications."

Abstract:In agriculture, hydrogels can be addressed for effective operation of water and controlled-release fertilizers. Hydrogels have a significant ability for retaining water and improving nutrient availability in soil, enhancing plant growth while reducing water and fertilizer usage. This work aimed to prepare a hydrogel composite based on microalgae and biopolymers including chitosan and starch for use as a soil conditioner. The hydrogel composite was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. All hydrogel properties were studied including swelling degree, biodegradability, water-holding capacity, water retention, and re-swelling capacity in soil and water. The urea fertilizer loading and releasing behavior of the prepared hydrogels were investigated. The results revealed that the range of the maximal urea loading was between 99 and 440%, and the kinetics of loading was fitted with Freundlich model. The urea release % exhibited 78-95%, after 30 days, and the kinetics of release was fitted with zero-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas models. Furthermore, the prepared hydrogels obtained a significant water-holding capacity, after blending soil (50 g) with small amount of hydrogels (1 g), the capacity increased in the range of 99.4-101.5%. In sum, the prepared hydrogels have the potential to be applied as a soil conditioner.
Promising superabsorbent hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose and polyacrylic acid: synthesis, characterization, and applications in fertilizer engineering

Abstract:The combination of hydrogel and fertilizer as slow release fertilizer hydrogel (SRFH) has become one of the most promising materials to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fertilizer by decreasing fertilizer loss rate, supplying nutrients sustainably, and lowering the frequency of irrigation. The hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) (CMC/PAA) was synthesized. All materials, Vinasse, hydrogel (CMC/PAA) and (Vinasse/CMC-PAA) were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The formed hydrogel was applied to control the salinity of Vinasse to use it as a cheap and economical fertilizer. The results showed that using the prepared hydrogel with Vinasse (V/CMC-PAA) as a slow-release organic fertilizer decreased the EC value through the first six hours from 1.77 to 0.35 mmohs/cm. Also, using V/CMC-PAA can control and keep the potassium as fertilizer for 50 days. The productivity per feddan from the sugar cane crop increased by about 15%, and the number of irrigations decreased from 5 to 4 times.

Abstract:To improve the efficient use of nitrogen and decrease the environmental pollution of N losses, a novel and biodegradable composite hydrogel was prepared by chemical cross-linking synthesis using gelatin (Gel), chitosan (CS) and polylactic acid (PLA) as raw materials. Urea as the nitrogen source was loaded into this new biodegradable hydrogel using the solution immersion method. The chemical structures of the composite hydrogels were characterized and their properties were analyzed by XRD and XPS. The regulation of urea loading and the swelling behavior of the composite hydrogel under different temperature conditions were investigated; the release behavior and release model of the composite hydrogel in the aqueous phase was explored. The results show that the loading of urea is controllable in aqueous urea solution with different concentrations. In the water phase, it shows a three-stage sustained release behavior, that is, the initial release rate of urea is relatively fast, and the medium release rate of urea gradually slows down, and finally the nutrient release rate tends to be flat. The release behavior in the water phase fits to the Ritger–Peppas model. Within 10 min, 180 min and 900 min, the cumulative nutrient release rate of gelatin/chitosan/PLA-urea (GCPU) composite hydrogel is 20%, 70% and 86%, respectively. Compared with pure urea, The urea diffusion time of GCPU was extended by 1350-times. In addition, the GCPU also has good water absorption and water retention properties, in which average water content can reach as high as 4448%. All of the results in this work showed that GCPU hydrogel had good water absorption and retention and N slow-release properties, which are expected to be widely used in sustainable agriculture and forestry, especially in arid and degraded land.

Abstract:The aim of this work is a synthesis of suitable hydrogel to produce slow‐release fertilizer using recycled cellulose which is obtained from waste paper. For this purpose, initially, we extracted alpha cellulose from waste paper and modified it to obtain carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Then, the CMC was converted to a suitable hydrogel through in situ graft copolymerization of acrylic acid and vinyl acetate in the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The various factors that affect hydrogel synthesis, such as the amounts of CMC, monomers, initiator, and crosslinker, were evaluated. In the optimized formulation, the weight ratio of monomers to CMC is 7, the molar ratio of monomers to each other is 1, and the crosslinker is used as 3 molar percent of monomers. The products were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, thermal gravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscope analyses. The swelling behavior of the synthesized hydrogels was evaluated in different environments, such as distilled water, tap water, salt water, and different pH levels. The swelling ratio increases with an increase in pH level. Between the synthesized hydrogels, the best one was selected for slow‐release fertilizer production and loaded with 20‐20‐20 fertilizer (NPK), and the release behavior was evaluated. In an alkaline pH, there was a long time for NPK release within a slow‐release medium and even after 361 h, the release process was continued. Also, the performance of the fertilizer‐loaded hydrogel in soil using water holding capacity and water retention ratio tests were evaluated.

Abstract:Slow-release fertilizers (SRF) have emerged as a sustainable remedy to the environmental problems caused by conventional water-soluble fertilizers. They have demonstrated their efficacy in reducing fertilizer dosage applications, enhancing fertilizer utilization efficiency, minimizing losses, and ultimately improving crop yield. This study developed biodegradable nanocomposite hydrogels (BHM) as a promising approach by combining cassava starch (Cst), polyacrylamide (PAM), natural rubber (NR), and various montmorillonite (MMT) contents (0–10 wt%) and fabricating via free-radical polymerization and semi-interpenetrating polymer network technology, crosslinked by glutaraldehyde. Notably, the addition of MMT played a crucial role and significantly improved the tensile strength, biodegradability, and N release efficiency of the BHM hydrogels. BHM3 (3 wt% MMT) demonstrated the highest swelling ratio of 7074% and improved N release efficiency, mechanical strength, and biodegradation rate by 39.1%, 260% and 58%, respectively, compared to BHM0. The FWBHM formulations (urea coated with BHM and wax layers) also exhibited good biosafety. Finally, FWBHM3 yielded acceptable growth rates, a greater yield, and a 4-fold lower price than commercial SRF. These findings provide a promising route for developing new nanocomposite hydrogels based on Cst, NR, and MMT components with high swelling and water-retention, high strengths, and excellent biodegradation with greater slow-release duration and sustained environments.

Abstract:Conventional fertilizers used worldwide to increase crop yield have several environmental and economic issues resulting from their quickly soluble nature, causing most of the fertilizers to be lost through agricultural field runoff and leachate. Utilizing slow or controlled-release fertilizers may reduce the issues associated with conventional fertilizers. However, many commercially available variants of slow-release formulations are ecologically unsustainable as they are made of non-biodegradable polymers. In the present study, a hydrogel composed of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) was synthesized for use as a biodegradable and environmentally sustainable host for carrying urea within its matrix and released the same slowly over a long period of time. The swelling measurements showed that the thermally stable urea-loaded CNF/CMC hydrogel (UCNF) had a high water absorption capacity of 147 g/g in distilled water owing to its porous morphology and the presence of various polar groups. When exposed to a dry environment, it released the absorbed moisture slowly over a period of more than 2 weeks. The urea release rate was also relatively slow; it took about 30 days to release the urea loaded in UCNF. The results indicated that urea diffusion from the material was non-Fickian in character and fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent biodegradability; more than 80% by weight of the hydrogel disappeared through biodegradation by soil bacteria within 3 months. The plant study revealed that adding UCNF to the soil effectively enhanced the seed germination and growth of the plant. Also, plants treated with urea-loaded hydrogel had better growth than the pure urea- and control plant samples. The study found that crosslinked and functionalized cellulose nanofiber may effectively transport water and fertilizer slowly and sustainably.

Abstract:Preparation of a new core–shell slow-release fertilizer formulation was conducted through the coating of commercial NPK fertilizer with hydrogel/clinoptilolite (Hyd/CL) nanocomposite. The Hyd/CL nanocomposite was prepared from free radical polymerization of sodium alginate, acrylic acid, acrylamide, and clinoptilolite zeolite. The uniform coating on the surface of the fertilizer granules was verified by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling kinetics as well as the water-retention property and water absorption rate of the prepared samples was studied. Furthermore, the release of fertilizer from Hyd/CL nanocomposite-coated fertilizer granules into soil showed that the Hyd/CL nanocomposite layer around the fertilizer granules caused the system to liberate the nutrient in a more controlled manner (lower than 57 % of loaded fertilizer on the 30 days) than that with the uncoated fertilizer. The overall results eventually suggested that the hydrogel nanocomposite designed in this work can be used as a coating on granular fertilizer compounds for application in agriculture due to its water-retention and slow-release properties.

Abstract:Nearly 1.3 billion tons of food are discarded annually in the production process. In this study, a novel slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with water absorbency was developed using leftover rice and crosslinking methods. Urea was incorporated as the nitrogen source in a leftover rice-g-poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite (LR-g-PAA/MMT) network, and then the leftover rice-g-poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite/Urea (LR-g-PAA/MMT/Urea) retained in the soil, and used as the loss control agent for water and nutrients. Variables including concentrations of acrylic acid, montmorillonite, N,N´-methylenebis acrylamide (MBA), and potassium persulfate (KPS) were investigated. Samples were with a water absorbency of 102.6g/g in distilled water and 25.1g/g in 1.0wt% NaCl solution under optimized conditions. Swelling measurements and water-retention indicated that higher-covalent cations would aggregate the hydrogels and decrease swelling. Investigating leaching behavior showed that these samples have the potential to carry the necessary nitrogen (N). The results demonstrated that the LR-g-PAA/MMT/Urea had a low leaching losses of N (19.7%) compared with pure urea (52.3%). Therefore, the developed fertilizer may be widely applicable in agriculture and horticulture, and could provide a new platform for reusing leftover rice.

Abstract:A novel slow-release nitrogen fertilizer hydrogel nanocomposite was fabricated by in-situ free radical copolymerization between sodium alginate (SA), acrylic acid (AA), and acrylamide (AM) in an aqueous media using N, N'methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker, citric acid-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNC) as a nanofiller and urea as a source of nitrogen. Several variables influencing the water absorbency of the fabricated hydrogels were studied and optimized. The optimized Hyd/C-CNC and Hyd/C-CNC/urea were fully characterized to determine their structure, thermal stability, and morphology. Swelling behavior in saline solutions such as (NaCl, CaCl 2, and FeCl 3 ) and at various pHs (2−12) as well as the swelling kinetics were investigated. The incorporation of functionalized cellulose nanocrystals into the hydrogel was very beneficial since it boosts the water absorbency from 260 ± 8 g/g for hydrogel without C-CNC to 316 ± 10 g/g for the hydrogel with 1.5 wt% of C-CNC. The soil experiment showed an enhanced soil water-retention capacity after the addition of 1 wt% of the Hyd/C-CNC polymer. The addition of urea confers to the Hyd/C-CNC material an enhanced water retention property and a slow-release nitrogen property. Under optimized conditions, the Hyd/C-CNC/urea had a total nitrogen amount of 13.66%, a high swelling degree (412 ± 4 g/g), and prolonged nitrogen release duration (20 days for complete N-release). Thus, the good water adsorption capacity, as well as the good slow-release fertilizer property, make this material a suitable water-saving material for agriculture applications.

Abstract:The use of fertilizer is closely related to crop growth and environmental protection in agricultural production. It is of great significance to develop environmentally friendly and biodegradable bio-based slow-release fertilizers. In this work, porous hemicellulose-based hydrogels were created, which had excellent mechanical properties, water retention properties (the water retention ratio in soil was 93.8% after 5 d), antioxidant properties (76.76%), and UV resistance (92.2%). This improves the efficiency and potential of its application in soil. In addition, electrostatic interaction and coating with sodium alginate produced a stable core–shell structure. The slow release of urea was realized. The cumulative release ratio of urea after 12 h was 27.42% and 11.38%, and the release kinetic constants were 0.0973 and 0.0288, in aqueous solution and soil, respectively. The sustained release results demonstrated that urea diffusion in aqueous solution followed the Korsmeyer–Peppas model, indicating the Fick diffusion mechanism, whereas diffusion in soil adhered to the Higuchi model. The outcomes show that urea release ratio may be successfully slowed down by hemicellulose hydrogels with high water retention ability. This provides a new method for the application of lignocellulosic biomass in agricultural slow-release fertilizer.

Abstract:Nanocomposites are promising materials for the development of novel and environmentally friendly fertilizers that can delay the release of nutrients. In this study, a novel high-strength spherical nanocomposite fertilizer was prepared via agglomeration and granulation using montmorillonite, urea phosphate, urea, and potassium chloride as raw materials. The properties and morphology of the prepared fertilizer were characterized by Fourier Transform Tnfrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope ( SEM ) , Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) techniques. FT-IR analysis identified the formation of polyphosphate in fertilizer and hydrogen bonds between polyphosphate and montmorillonite. XRD analysis showed increased montmorillonite interlayer spacing and confirmed the formation of polyphosphate-montmorillonite nanocomposites. The effects of raw material mass ratio, reaction time, and reaction temperature on the strength and fluidity of nanocomposite fertilizer granules and the optimum preparation process was obtained by the response surface method (RSM-CCD). The optimum preparation process was obtained as follows: reaction temperature, 103 o C; reaction time, 237 min; and mass ratio, 1:1:0.93:1 (urea phosphate: urea: potassium chloride: montmorillonite). Under these optimum conditions, the particle hardness and angle of repose of the prepared fertilizer were 64.75 ± 0.48 N and 30.84 ± 0.95°. Nutrient release and agronomic effectiveness of the fertilizer was evaluated using column leaching and pot experiments, respectively. The column leaching experiment and XCT analysis demonstrated that the nanocomposite structure was responsible for the slow nutrient release. The pot experiment showed that compared with the traditional fertilizer, the soil nitrate and available phosphorus was increased by 28.02% and 43.45%, respectively, and the maize yield was increased by 24.27% with the application of prepared fertilizer. This work provides support for the preparation of high-strength spherical nanocomposite fertilizers and their large-scale applications in modern mechanical agriculture.

Abstract:Conventional fertilizers face environmental and economic challenges due to their high solubility, leading to significant losses via runoff and leachate. This study presents a biodegradable hydrogel, synthesized from lignin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), designed as an eco-friendly carrier for struvite (fertilizer) with controlled phosphate release. The hydrogel was analysed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, the prepared hydrogels demonstrated high water absorption capacities (963.4 %, 706.4 %, and 410 % for LH 4 , LH 8 , and LH 12 , respectively) and exhibited Fickian diffusion behaviour. Phosphate release studies showed a gradual release over 6–8 h with concentrations of 20.5 ppm, 19.45 ppm, and 17.85 ppm for St-LH 4 , St-LH 8 , and St-LH 12 . These lignin-based hydrogels offer a promising, cost-effective solution for slow-release fertilizers with high efficiency.

Abstract:We report a hydrogel with 25 % polyacrylic acid by grafting and mixing starch with polyacrylic acid and urea. The novel ionic crosslinking strategy through iron ions enabled the high biodegradability of a novel slow-release fertilizer coating material. The ionic cross-linking improved the degree of polymerization of the material and formed a compact structured membrane material, which extended the period of nitrogen release to a sufficient extent. The membrane material obtained through ionic cross-linking exhibited a low thermal decomposition temperature and high thermal weight loss. Material displayed significant degradation with a weight loss of 71.11 % in a 60-day degradation experiment conducted in soil. This cross-linking approach provides a novel route for developing encapsulated slow-release fertilizers. It expands the application of natural polymers in the field of slow-release fertilizers.

Abstract:Circular economy has renewed its focus; a novel eco-friendly semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) device was prepared from functionally modified natural backbone ( Colocasia esculenta ) for controlled release of fertilizers. The method encompasses the usage of natural non-toxic materials with addition of fortifying nutrients. Naturally procured starch moieties converted into acetylated starch, coded as Acy CE. This was further cross-linked with polyacrylamide (PAAm) in the presence of N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide and ammonium persulfate as a crosslinker-initiater system. The chemical, physical, and thermal properties of the synthesized semi-IPN coded as Acy CE-cl-PAAm were also presented through various characterization techniques. The Acy CE-cl-PAAm was assessed for its fertilizer release mechanism in water media studied on three pH values. The release kinetics of all the fertilizers followed Korsmeyer-Peppas Model (Fickian diffusion), unveiling its excellent potential as controlled agrochemical release device. The macromolecular relaxation of the given network matrix was found to be comparable to the diffusion rate of urea indicated by Fickian ( n = 0.4) diffusion mechanism. The initial diffusion coefficients of D I = 8.03*10 −7 , D I = 7.9*10 −7 , D I = 9.8*10 −7 , D I = 1.7 * 10 −7 were found to be greater than the lateral diffusion co-efficients of D L = 1.4*10 −7 , D L = 1.3*10 −7 , D L = 3.9*10 −7 , D L = 3.9*10 −7 in the case of urea, ammonium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and bio-fertilizer, released at pH = 7.0, respectively. Also, it was found to get degraded up to 76% by weight with 1.1% rate of degradation per day within 70 days in vermi-compost method. The results indicated that this is an effective approach for controlled agrochemical release with great potential applications in sustained agriculture.

Abstract:In this study, an eco-friendly controlled release fertilizer cellulose-based hydrogel was prepared from cellulose fibers derived from wastepaper, epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a crosslinker and carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) as a gelling agent. A maximum swelling capacity of 2000% was achieved for cellulose hydrogel with optimum composition. The soil moisture contents in the presence of optimized cellulose hydrogels were determined using the digital moisture meter. Maximum soil moisture of 36.5% was obtained in topsoil, followed by 30.1% in wet clayey soil and 23.4% in sandy soil after 7 days. Urea as a model fertilizer was loaded onto the cellulose hydrogels to control the release of fertilizer. The maximum loading capacity of urea in cellulose hydrogel is 0.51 g/g. The urea-controlled release profiles of the cellulose hydrogel in distilled water and various types of soils were investigated. The formulation of cellulose hydrogels was observed to facilitate the gradual release of urea, with about 74.71% release in topsoil, 73.37% release in wet clayey soil and 71.84% release in sandy soil within 42 days when compared to the free urea which was about 97.32%, 95.09% and 98.47% release in topsoil, wet clayey soils and sandy soils, respectively within 7 days. The result of this study shows that the urea-loaded cellulose hydrogel could be a promising controlled-release fertilizer.

Abstract:Using natural rubber (NR)/chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials, biodegradable semi-IPN (semi-interpenetrating polymer network) composites were prepared by thiol-epoxy click reaction under UV light, which was used as the shell of sustained release preparation. Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as raw material and vanillin as the cross-linking agent, hydrogen-bonded hybrid network hydrogel loaded with urea was prepared by freeze-thaw cycle, which was used as the core of sustained-release preparation. Finally, a green-coated urea fertilizer with core-shell structure was prepared to ameliorate the environmental pollution of slow-release fertilizer (for example, synthetic polymer-coated fertilizers are difficult to biodegrade), as well as to achieve the water retention and the effective slow-release. The high CS/PVA contents and the combination of the hydrogel core and the rubber shell significantly improved the mechanical properties of the coating material (tensile strength above 5 MPa, elongation at break up to 1400 %), hydrophilicity (to promote the degradation rate of the rubber shell) and soil water retention of the coating material (close to pure hydrogel), showing enhanced reaction. In terms of slow-release effect, coated nitrogen fertilizer with 3 % CS content, 5 % PVA content and 10-min coating time (SRP3/10) achieved the best slow-release effect of nitrogen (N) in water (62.7 % at 10 days), which was related to the hydrophilicity, semi-IPN skeleton and the cross-linking structure of the network, and the release conformed to the Korsmeyer-Peppas model with a non-Fickian diffusion release mechanism, indicating that the behavior of N release was mediated by a combination of drug diffusion and skeleton dissolution.
