Abstract:Creativity serves as a cornerstone for societal progress and innovation. With the rise of advanced generative AI models capable of tasks once reserved for human creativity, the study of AI's creative potential becomes imperative for its responsible development and application. In this paper, we prove in theory that AI can be as creative as humans under the condition that it can properly fit the data generated by human creators. Therefore, the debate on AI's creativity is reduced into the question of its ability to fit a sufficient amount of data. To arrive at this conclusion, this paper first addresses the complexities in defining creativity by introducing a new concept called Relative Creativity. Rather than attempting to define creativity universally, we shift the focus to whether AI can match the creative abilities of a hypothetical human. The methodological shift leads to a statistically quantifiable assessment of AI's creativity, term Statistical Creativity. This concept, statistically comparing the creative abilities of AI with those of specific human groups, facilitates theoretical exploration of AI's creative potential. Our analysis reveals that by fitting extensive conditional data without marginalizing out the generative conditions, AI can emerge as a hypothetical new creator. The creator possesses the same creative abilities on par with the human creators it was trained on. Building on theoretical findings, we discuss the application in prompt-conditioned autoregressive models, providing a practical means for evaluating creative abilities of generative AI models, such as Large Language Models (LLMs). Additionally, this study provides an actionable training guideline, bridging the theoretical quantification of creativity with practical model training.

Abstract:Creativity is a fundamental pillar of human expression and a driving force behind innovation, yet it now stands at a crossroads. As artificial intelligence advances at an astonishing pace, the question arises: can machines match and potentially surpass human creativity? This study investigates the creative performance of artificial intelligence (AI) compared to humans by analyzing the effects of two distinct prompting strategies (a Naive and an Expert AI) on AI and across three different tasks (Text, Draw and Alternative Uses tasks). Human external evaluators have scored creative outputs generated by humans and AI, and these subjective creative scores were complemented with objective measures based on quantitative measurements and NLP tools. The results reveal that AI generally outperforms humans in creative tasks, though this advantage is nuanced by the specific nature of each task and the chosen creativity criteria. Ultimately, while AI demonstrates superior performance in certain creative domains, our results suggest that integrating human feedback is crucial for maximizing AI's creative potential.

Abstract:This article (a) draws from various theories of creativity (e.g., 4P and 6P theories) and (b) uses several concepts from the creativity literature (e.g., self-actualization, emergence) to evaluate the claim that AI can be creative. This approach suggests that, at most, the output of AI represents products which, although lacking, may be attributed with creativity. Such attributions are often mistaken, and, significantly, products say little about the underlying process. Indeed, criticisms previously leveled at the view that the social recognition of products is required of creativity also apply to AI output. Several examples of products and overt actions that have been mistakenly attributed with creativity are discussed. The most telling of these is the ostensible emergence by a machine. The conclusion is that it makes no sense to refer to “creative AI.” One alternative is to extend the concept of “artificial intelligence” to creativity, which gives us “artificial creativity” as the label for what computers can do. Artificial creativity may be original and effective but it lacks several things that characterize human creativity. Thus it may be the most accurate to recognize that the output of AI as a kind of pseudo-creativity.

Abstract:Creativity is the ability to produce novel, useful, and surprising ideas, and has been widely studied as a crucial aspect of human cognition. Machine creativity on the other hand has been a long-standing challenge. With the rise of advanced generative AI, there has been renewed interest and debate regarding AI's creative capabilities. Therefore, it is imperative to revisit the state of creativity in AI and identify key progresses and remaining challenges. In this work, we survey leading works studying the creative capabilities of AI systems, focusing on creative problem-solving, linguistic, artistic, and scientific creativity. Our review suggests that while the latest AI models are largely capable of producing linguistically and artistically creative outputs such as poems, images, and musical pieces, they struggle with tasks that require creative problem-solving, abstract thinking and compositionality and their generations suffer from a lack of diversity, originality, long-range incoherence and hallucinations. We also discuss key questions concerning copyright and authorship issues with generative models. Furthermore, we highlight the need for a comprehensive evaluation of creativity that is process-driven and considers several dimensions of creativity. Finally, we propose future research directions to improve the creativity of AI outputs, drawing inspiration from cognitive science and psychology.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence has been the most successful modern technology created in recent years. Its development began in the 1960s and was based on simulating the human brain. The scientific community's interest has focused on developing machine-learning neural networks and their potential applications in music, art, architecture, and other fields. AI is increasingly capable of generating creative ideas and assisting humans in decision-making processes. With advanced algorithms, machine learning, and natural language processing, AI has the potential to revolutionize creative thinking. In this article, there is discussed whether AI can generate creative ideas and how expressive and creative these ideas can be. AI technologies can be used in creative industries such as content creation, information analysis, information retrieval, and processing. The purpose of new technologies is to automate specific processes, simplify them, maintain accuracy, and reduce production costs. In some cases, they enable us to complete tasks or solve problems that were previously impossible. AI is a set of codes, methods, algorithms, and other data that allow a computer system to imitate human behavior and make human-like decisions. AI systems widely use data compression and storage capabilities, which enable them to process information by observing human actions and behaviors. To generate creative ideas, AI requires a different level of training and expertise, a faster rate of information processing, and high-quality analysis. Advances in AI largely depend on data relevance. Human creative thinking often uses imagination to generate original ideas that may not follow general rules. Creative tasks usually require originality of thought and innovation, which can be challenging to replicate with AI systems. Artificial intelligence has shown mixed results in both original creative and automated work processes. However, it is increasingly being associated with human creativity and original thinking. Over the decades, numerous studies have been conducted on the use of artificial intelligence in the creative field. Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has challenged the notion of creativity as an inherently human trait. This AI creativity might prove especially valuable in brainstorming exercises. Particularly, when paired with human creativity. Such hybrid teams may help to overcome the productivity losses typically present in human brainstorming groups. To test this idea, we conduct a lab experiment (N = 168), comparing nominal, interactive, hybrid (human-AI), and AI-only groups and their respective abilities to generate creative ideas. We draw on the Search for Ideas in Associative Memory (SIAM) theory to inform our exploration of generative AI and its potential to influence processes like cognitive stimulation, production blocking, and social inhibition. We re-evaluate creativity theories in the context of AI, contributing to the theoretical and practical understanding of creative processes in the era of AI. Additionally, we provide qualitative insights into participants’ experiences to complement our findings. We find that hybrid groups outperform interactive and nominal groups in terms of brainstorming productivity and creativity. Furthermore, our study suggests that AI alone is far more efficient at generating creative ideas. We discuss the implications of this research and call for additional research on hybrid intelligence in creative processes.
A Comparison Study of Human and Machine-Generated Creativity

Abstract:Creativity is a fundamental feature of human intelligence. However, achieving creativity is often considered a challenging task, particularly in design. In recent years, using computational machines to support people in creative activities in design, such as idea generation and evaluation, has become a popular research topic. Although there exist many creativity support tools, few of them could produce creative solutions in a direct manner, but produce stimuli instead. DALL.E is currently the most advanced computational model that could generate creative ideas in pictorial formats based on textual descriptions. This study conducts a Turing test, a computational test, and an expert test to evaluate DALL.E's capability in achieving combinational creativity comparing with human designers. The results reveal that DALL.E could achieve combinational creativity at a similar level to novice designers and indicate the differences between computer and human creativity.

Abstract:Creativity has traditionally been considered an ability exclusive to human beings. However, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has resulted in generative AI chatbots that can produce high-quality artworks, raising questions about the differences between human and machine creativity. In this study, we compared the creativity of humans (n = 256) with that of three current AI chatbots using the alternate uses task (AUT), which is the most used divergent thinking task. Participants were asked to generate uncommon and creative uses for everyday objects. On average, the AI chatbots outperformed human participants. While human responses included poor-quality ideas, the chatbots generally produced more creative responses. However, the best human ideas still matched or exceed those of the chatbots. While this study highlights the potential of AI as a tool to enhance creativity, it also underscores the unique and complex nature of human creativity that may be difficult to fully replicate or surpass with AI technology. The study provides insights into the relationship between human and machine creativity, which is related to important questions about the future of creative work in the age of AI.

Abstract:Creativity is a deeply debated topic, as this concept is arguably quintessential to our humanity. Across different epochs, it has been infused with an extensive variety of meanings relevant to that era. Along these, the evolution of technology have provided a plurality of novel tools for creative purposes. Recently, the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), through deep learning approaches, have seen proficient successes across various applications. The use of such technologies for creativity appear in a natural continuity to the artistic trend of this century. However, the aura of a technological artefact labeled as intelligent has unleashed passionate and somewhat unhinged debates on its implication for creative endeavors. In this paper, we aim to provide a new perspective on the question of creativity at the era of AI, by blurring the frontier between social and computational sciences. To do so, we rely on reflections from social science studies of creativity to view how current AI would be considered through this lens. As creativity is a highly context-prone concept, we underline the limits and deficiencies of current AI, requiring to move towards artificial creativity. We argue that the objective of trying to purely mimic human creative traits towards a self-contained ex-nihilo generative machine would be highly counterproductive, putting us at risk of not harnessing the almost unlimited possibilities offered by the sheer computational power of artificial agents.

Abstract:Abstract Recent artificial intelligence (AI) tools have demonstrated the ability to produce outputs traditionally considered creative. One such system is text-to-image generative AI (e.g. Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, DALL-E), which automates humans’ artistic execution to generate digital artworks. Utilizing a dataset of over 4 million artworks from more than 50,000 unique users, our research shows that over time, text-to-image AI significantly enhances human creative productivity by 25% and increases the value as measured by the likelihood of receiving a favorite per view by 50%. While peak artwork Content Novelty, defined as focal subject matter and relations, increases over time, average Content Novelty declines, suggesting an expanding but inefficient idea space. Additionally, there is a consistent reduction in both peak and average Visual Novelty, captured by pixel-level stylistic elements. Importantly, AI-assisted artists who can successfully explore more novel ideas, regardless of their prior originality, may produce artworks that their peers evaluate more favorably. Lastly, AI adoption decreased value capture (favorites earned) concentration among adopters. The results suggest that ideation and filtering are likely necessary skills in the text-to-image process, thus giving rise to “generative synesthesia”—the harmonious blending of human exploration and AI exploitation to discover new creative workflows.
AI Knowledge and Reasoning: Emulating Expert Creativity in Scientific Research

Abstract:We investigate whether modern AI can emulate expert creativity in complex scientific endeavors. We introduce novel methodology that utilizes original research articles published after the AI's training cutoff, ensuring no prior exposure, mitigating concerns of rote memorization and prior training. The AI are tasked with redacting findings, predicting outcomes from redacted research, and assessing prediction accuracy against reported results. Analysis on 589 published studies in four leading psychology journals over a 28-month period, showcase the AI's proficiency in understanding specialized research, deductive reasoning, and evaluating evidentiary alignment--cognitive hallmarks of human subject matter expertise and creativity. These findings suggest the potential of general-purpose AI to transform academia, with roles requiring knowledge-based creativity become increasingly susceptible to technological substitution.

Abstract:Ideation is a source of innovation and creativity, and is commonly used in early stages of engineering design processes. This paper proposes an integrated approach for enhancing design ideation by applying artificial intelligence and data mining techniques. This approach consists of two models, a semantic ideation network and a visual concepts combination model, which provide inspiration semantically and visually based on computational creativity theory. The semantic ideation network aims to provoke new ideas by mining potential knowledge connections across multiple knowledge domains, and this was achieved by applying “step-forward” and “path-track” algorithms which assist in exploring forward given a concept and in tracking back the paths going from a departure concept through a destination concept. In the visual concepts combination model, a generative adversarial networks model is proposed for generating images which synthesize two distinct concepts. An implementation of these two models was developed and tested in a design case study, which indicated that the proposed approach is able to not only generate a variety of cross-domain concept associations but also advance the ideation process quickly and easily in terms of quantity and novelty.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing new possibilities to numerous fields. There have been a lot of discussions about the development of AI technologies and the challenges caused by AI such as job replacement and ethical issues. However, it’s far from enough to systematically discuss how to use AI creatively and how AI can enhance human creativity. After studying over 1,600 application cases across more than 45 areas, and analyzing related academic publications, we believe that focusing on the collaboration with AI will benefit us far more than dwelling on the competing against AI. “AI Creativity” is the concept we want to introduce here: the ability for human and AI to co-live and co-create by playing to each other’s strengths to achieve more. AI is a complement to human intelligence, and it consolidates wisdom from all achievements of mankind, making collaboration across time and space possible. AI empowers us throughout the entire creative process, and makes creativity more accessible and more inclusive than ever. The corresponding Human-AI Co-Creation Model we proposed explains the creative process in the era of AI, with new possibilities brought by AI in each phase. In addition, this model allows any “meaning-making” action to be enhanced by AI and delivered in a more efficient way. The emphasis on collaboration is not only an echo to the importance of teamwork, but is also a push for co-creation between human and AI. The study of application cases shows that AI Creativity has been making significant impact in various fields, bringing new possibilities to human society and individuals, as well as new opportunities and challenges in technology, society and education.

Abstract:Generative AI (GenAI) has spurred the expectation of being creative, due to its ability to generate content, yet so far, its creativity has somewhat disappointed, because it is trained using existing data following human intentions to generate outputs. The purpose of this paper is to explore what is required to evolve AI from generative to creative. Based on a reinforcement learning approach and building upon various research streams of computational creativity, we develop a triple prompt-response-reward engineering framework to develop the creative capability of GenAI. This framework consists of three components: 1) a prompt model for expected creativity by developing discriminative prompts that are objectively, individually, or socially novel, 2) a response model for observed creativity by generating surprising outputs that are incrementally, disruptively, or radically innovative, and 3) a reward model for improving creativity over time by incorporating feedback from the AI, the creator/manager, and/or the customers. This framework enables the application of GenAI for various levels of creativity strategically.

Abstract:Creativity is a core 21st-century skill taught globally in education systems. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented in classrooms worldwide, a key question is proposed: how do students perceive AI and creativity? Twelve focus groups and eight one-on-one interviews were conducted with secondary school-aged students after they received training in both creativity and AI over eight weeks. An analysis of the interviews highlights that the students view the relationship between AI and creativity as four key concepts: social, affective, technological and learning factors. The students with a higher self-reported understanding of AI reported more positive thoughts about integrating AI into their classrooms. The students with a low understanding of AI tended to be fearful of AI. Most of the students indicated a thorough understanding of creativity and reported that AI could never match human creativity. The implications of the results are presented, along with recommendations for the future, to ensure AI can be effectively integrated into classrooms.

Abstract:International Journal of Architectural Computing, Ahead of Print. This study focuses on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its transformative impact on design ideation. Generative AI, recognized for its ability to produce a wide array of design alternatives, has become an important tool in design, reshaping traditional methodologies. It facilitates the generation of novel and diverse design forms, acting as a co-creator in the design process. This technology, through machine learning and pattern recognition, analyzes extensive design datasets, enabling the production of innovative solutions. The utilization of generative AI extends beyond replicating AI-provided solutions; it aids in developing and influencing novel concepts, thus fostering original design solutions. This aligns with the concept of 'reflective practice' in design, where designers iteratively refine concepts through a dialogue between thought and action. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with 40 design students, randomly assigned to two groups of 20 each. Conducted in two phases, each phase involved a distinct urban furniture design task. In Phase 1, Group A was provided with a text-to-image generating AI tool, while Group B was not. In Phase 2, both groups undertook a similar task without AI assistance. This design exercise allowed for examining the influence of AI on creativity and cognitive load. Design outcomes from both tasks were anonymized and evaluated by experienced professionals using the Creative Product Semantic Scale (CPSS), which measures Novelty, Resolution, and Elaboration and Synthesis. Additionally, the NASA Task Load Index (NASA TLX) questionnaire assessed cognitive load aspects such as mental demand and effort. Findings suggest that generative AI significantly influences the creative design process, enhancing the quality of design outcomes and reducing cognitive load. The AI group demonstrated better performance in both tasks, indicating the impact of AI tools on design skills. This study underscores the potential of AI tools in design education, balancing cognitive load management with creativity enhancement.

Abstract:The emergence of publicly accessible artificial intelligence (AI) large language models such as ChatGPT has given rise to global conversations on the implications of AI capabilities. Emergent research on AI has challenged the assumption that creative potential is a uniquely human trait thus, there seems to be a disconnect between human perception versus what AI is objectively capable of creating. Here, we aimed to assess the creative potential of humans in comparison to AI. In the present study, human participants (N = 151) and GPT-4 provided responses for the Alternative Uses Task, Consequences Task, and Divergent Associations Task. We found that AI was robustly more creative along each divergent thinking measurement in comparison to the human counterparts. Specifically, when controlling for fluency of responses, AI was more original and elaborate. The present findings suggest that the current state of AI language models demonstrate higher creative potential than human respondents.

Psittacines of Innovation? Assessing the True Novelty of AI Creations

Abstract:We examine whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems generate truly novel ideas rather than merely regurgitating patterns learned during training. Utilizing a novel experimental design, we task an AI with generating project titles for hypothetical crowdfunding campaigns. We compare within AI-generated project titles, measuring repetition and complexity. We compare between the AI-generated titles and actual observed field data using an extension of maximum mean discrepancy--a metric derived from the application of kernel mean embeddings of statistical distributions to high-dimensional machine learning (large language) embedding vectors--yielding a structured analysis of AI output novelty. Results suggest that (1) the AI generates unique content even under increasing task complexity, and at the limits of its computational capabilities, (2) the generated content has face validity, being consistent with both inputs to other generative AI and in qualitative comparison to field data, and (3) exhibits divergence from field data, mitigating concerns relating to intellectual property rights. We discuss implications for copyright and trademark law.
