Abstract:This article explores both the contributions and the drawbacks of the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus and symbolic violence, terms central to Bourdieu's thought, are explicated, as well as his critical assessments of methodological and epistemological problems in current social scientific research. In particular the drawbacks of public opinion polls and survey research, and the problematics of the social scientist as social subject, are treated. Bourdieu's metaphorical preferences are highlighted to indicate the assumptions he makes regarding social scientific practices and the hidden pitfalls of adapting his work wholesale to the field of communications. Finally, the social paradigm underpinning Bourdieu's work is compared with that underpinning a cultural studies approach to the study of communications.

Abstract:As a key concept of Bourdieu's constructivist and structural social theory,"Habitus" does not refere to "habitude" or "habit".It is a permanent system of dispositions of social actor,which is internalized and externalized,structuring and structured,as "generative principle" of social condition and "distinction principle" of social differentiation,that is,it functions historically and actually in multi-directions simultaneously,taking a form of double-structures,along with the actor's social action.Habitus,then,represents typically Bourdieu's creative contructivist structuralism and his critical attitude toward the traditional thinking model of"subject-object dualism" and "subject-centrism".

Abstract:An internal reconstruction and an immanent critique of Bourdieu's generative structuralism is presented. Rather than starting with the concept of “habitus,” as is usually done, the article tries to systematically reconstruct Bourdieu's theory by an analysis of the relational logic that permeates his whole work Tracing the debt Bourdieu's approach owes to Bachelard's rationalism and Cassirer's relationalism, the article examines Bourdieu's epistemological writings of the 1960s and 70s. It tries to make the case that Bourdieu's sociological metascience represents a rationalist version of Bhaskar's critical realism, and enjoins Bourdieu to give heed to the realist turn in the philosophy of the natural and the social sciences. The article shows how Bourdieu's epistemological assumptions are reflected in his primary theoretical constructs of “habitus” and “field.” To concretize their discussion, it analyzes Bourdieu's reinterpretation of Weber in his theory of the field of religion and of the young Mannheim in his theory of the scientific field.

Abstract:Pierre Bourdieu is known for his research in the areas of education and cultural stratification that led to a number of theoretical contributions informing the social sciences. Bourdieu’s interrelated concepts of field, capital, and habitus have become central in many approaches to inequality and stratification across the social sciences. In addition, we argue that Bourdieu’s ideas also feature in what is increasingly known as ‘digital sociology.’ To underscore this claim, we explore the ways in which Bourdieu’s ideas continue to have a major impact on social science research both on and with digital and Internet-based technologies. To do so, we offer a review of both Bourdieusian theorizing of the digital vis-à-vis both research on the social impacts of digital communication technologies and the application of digital technologies to social science research methods. We contend that three interconnected features of Bourdieu’s sociology have allowed his approach to flourish in the digital age: (1) his theories’ inseparability from the practice of empirical research; (2) his ontological stance combining realism and social constructionism; and (3) his familiarity with concepts developed in other disciplines and participation in interdisciplinary collaborative projects. We not only reason that these three factors go some way in accounting for Bourdieu’s influence in many sociological subfields, but we also suggest that they have been especially successful in positioning Bourdieusian sociology to take advantage of opportunities associated with digital communication technologies.

Abstract:The philosophical platform of the modern French sociologist, philosopher, theoretician and anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu, represents a dominant conceptual means and analytical instrument used for researching artistic phenomena and the part they play in the society. Acting in the field of sociology, philosophy and sociology of culture, Bourdieu has redefined the perception of social reality, made an emphasis on the reconsideration of the foundation of objective scientific knowledge and has asserted the importance of researching practice in the socio-historical context. The starting point of Bourdieu's work is the problematization of his theoretical concepts of habitus, practice, capital and the fields used for enlightening of the practice and the influence of avant-garde and revolutionary Bauhaus school and movement. The aim and the focus of this work is to present new forms of the artistic-educational institution of Bauhaus as an active social participant, as well as its innovative and specific practice in constructing of the social environment. Using the analytical and historical methods and applying Pierre Bourdieu's theory in the transdisciplinary area and in the research of artistic phenomena, a change in social reality is shown through a change in the artistic and educational practices in the field.
Complexity, Selectivity and Asymmetry in the Conformation of the Power Phenomenon. Analysis of Chilean Society

Abstract:In this work we analyzed the relationships between powerful politicians and businessmen of Chile in order to study the phenomenon of social power. We developed our study according to Complex Network Theory but also using traditional sociological theories of Power and Elites. Our analyses suggest that the studied network displays common properties of Complex Networks, such as scaling in connectivity distribution, properties of small-world networks, and modular structure, among others. We also observed that social power (a proposed metric is presented in this work) is also distributed inhomogeneously. However, the most interesting observation is that this inhomogeneous power and connectivity distribution, among other observed properties, may be the result of a dynamic and unregulated process of network growth in which powerful people tend to link to similar others. The compatibility between people, increasingly selective as the network grows, could generate the presence of extremely powerful people, but also a constant inequality of power where the difference between the most powerful is the same as among the least powerful. Our results are also in accordance with sociological theories.

Abstract:Looking back 25 years after the publication of Pierre Bourdieu's seminal article “The Force of Law,” we inquire into the background for the weak reception of his work in law and society studies. We argue that the differences in the conceptions of law, state, and society between US law and society scholarship and French historical sociology have made it hard to transfer the theory across the Atlantic. We further contend that the impact of Bourdieu's work has generally been reduced by how it has been perceived as yet another French theory. It has thus been decoupled from perhaps its greatest strength, namely, the underlying notion of sociology as a reflexive practice. Against this background, this article sets out to reconnect the practice of Bourdieusian sociology with its conceptual framework and, in so doing, demonstrate its potentially central role in the sociology of law.

Abstract:Science knowledge must reveal social's secrets. Sociologist Michel de Certeau's theorization of the practice of everyday life emphasizes the necessity of entering into the space of everyday practice to analyze and build theories, rather than constructing a research paper in the manner of overlooking the pedestrians while standing atop a tower. The idea of "minor practice", which focuses on analyzing the fundamental social process, greatly enlightens theory constructions. However, as many other French scholars, de Certeau's theory is more of signifying the world. Any real application of his theory in the social practice will more likely become a safeguard that maintains the existing social orders, since the tactics invoked by the powerless can easily be absorbed, attenuated, even defeated by the dominants.

Abstract:How can we account for the emergence and the dynamics of contentious mobilization? In order to answer this question, this article draws upon Bourdieu's sociology to reformulate the political process model. Building on the claim that many social spaces organized around different logics coexist within each society, I propose to replace the concept of political opportunity structure, which lies at the core of the political process model, with that of field opportunity structure (FOS). There are thus as many FOS as there are fields and the structure of <i>political</i> opportunities is just one type of opportunity structure among others. After briefly reviewing the political process model and Bourdieu's field theory, this article explains how shifts in the FOS can contribute to the emergence, growth, and decline of mobilization and contention. It then discusses how Bourdieu's concept of habitus can account for actors <i>not</i> taking advantage of such shifts in situations of crisis, when fields relax their hold over the practices and goals of actors.

Abstract:This paper attempts to theorize Pierre Bourdieu's empirical studies on social reproduction and cultural domination,and intends to explore his habitus-mediated cultural theory as well as aesthetic perceptions.Bourdieu discloses the transposition and containment nature of any social reproduction among multiple structured fields,thinking that the social habitus,cultural values,aesthetic orientations representing the dominant interests inscribes the social subjects through symbolic violence(for instance,education),constructing the socialized subjectivity and thus justifying the stability and productability of the social inertia.

Abstract:La constitución de los seres humanos en sujetos ético-políticos viene precedida por nuestra inclusión en una comunidad política, por la aprehensión de ciertas formas de entendernos a nosotros mismos, a los demás y al mundo, así como por efecto de relaciones de poder y de saber en los distintos espacios sociales. Bajo esta perspectiva, este artículo busca analizar la conformación de una particular forma de subjetividad en el contexto de la España del tardofranquismo y la transición democrática: el sujeto discapacitado. Para ello, se abordarán varias estrategias de gobierno de la discapacidad en tres espacios de análisis: la familia, la escuela y el hospital. En cada uno de ellos, y desde una aproximación que combina principalmente las perspectivas teóricas de Bourdieu, Foucault y los miembros de la Segunda Escuela de Chicago, se analizará el material recabado en 17 entrevistas en profundidad realizadas a personas con discapacidad física, congénita o adquirida, nacidas entre 1938 y 1962 en distintos lugares de España. Este análisis permite comprender la emergencia de una nueva subjetividad entre las personas con discapacidad física en el periodo y el contexto estudiados, así como presentar algunas resistencias en sus procesos de constitución como sujetos.

Abstract:El objetivo de este ensayo es analizar el juego como un elemento central en las prácticas que construyen micropolíticas en las instituciones sociales del Estado. Los principales conceptos que se trabajan son: juego, prácticas y micropolíticas. El análisis se recorta a las instituciones de los campos sociales haciendo énfasis en el tamaño material. La hipótesis es que el tamaño de la organización es inversamente proporcional al desarrollo del juego en las instituciones. Esta discusión se da en un contexto marcado por un fuerte desapego a lo público y a lo estatal, lo cual no hace más que agravar las profundas desigualdades sociales, el nihilismo y la aporofobia, con una crisis de legitimidad de las instituciones públicas frente al avance de ideas no democráticas en gobiernos elegidos democráticamente en varios países de América Latina y de otros continentes.

Abstract:This paper presents a particular understanding of Bourdieu's social theory and the place of language within it, in response to Susen's depiction of these matters in his “Bourdieusian reflections on language: Unavoidable conditions of the real speech situation”. Bourdieu's understanding of language is argued to be overly derivative and too dependent upon conventional assumptions of late twentieth-century thought. Conversely, allegations of “determinism” in Bourdieu's social theory are rebutted as being too often glib and unquestioningly rooted in liberal assumptions about human “creativity”. It is argued that Bourdieu's social theory could in fact be construed of as not being determinist enough, an appraisal hardly ever entertained by social theorists today.

Abstract:Pierre Bourdieu discussed how an individual's taste relates o his or her social environment, and how the classification of \emph{distinct} and \emph{vulgar}, among others, arises from at the same time as shapes this taste in his work called \emph{La Distinction}. Robert Axelrod created a computational model with local convergence and global polarization properties to describe the dissemination of culture by simple selective interactions. In this letter, Axelrod model is modified, while holding to the same original principles, to describe Bourdieu theory. This allows to analyze how the dynamics of society's tastes and trends may vary with a simple approach, considering social structures and to understand which social forces are crucial to change dynamics. Despite the relative simplicity, the present approach clarifies symbolic power relations, a relevant issue for understanding power relation both on large as well as on small and localized scale, with impact on activities ranging from daily life matters to business, politics, and research. This model sheds light on social issues, showing that a small amount of conflict within a class plays a central role in the culture dynamics, being the major responsible for continuous changes in distinction paradigms.

Abstract:This study focuses on the problem of the reconstruction of urban space through discursive representations. Understanding how discourse is spatialised will provide a conceptual ground for the discussion of the problem. The evaluation of knowledge, power, and representation in spatial terms becomes the fundamental premise in the study. Urban space is the space where discursive representations have a social and spatial existence. Here, urban space is approached as an archival space that renders spatial-social-political information visible. The problem is studied in reference to the Sultanahmet district in Istanbul. The Sultanahmet district is an urban palimpset whose archival structure has been made through discursive representations, each constructed on the proceding one.
