Abstract:Diverse interlayer tunability of physical properties of two-dimensional layers mostly lies in the covalent-like quasi-bonding that is significant in electronic structures but rather weak for energetics. Such characteristics result in various stacking orders that are energetically comparable but may significantly differ in terms of electronic structures, e.g. magnetism. Inspired by several recent experiments showing interlayer anti-ferromagnetically coupled CrI3 bilayers, we carried out first-principles calculations for CrI3 bilayers. We found that the anti-ferromagnetic coupling results from a new stacking order with the C2/m space group symmetry, rather than the graphene-like one with R3 as previously believed. Moreover, we demonstrated that the intra- and inter-layer couplings in CrI3 bilayer are governed by two different mechanisms, namely ferromagnetic super-exchange and direct-exchange interactions, which are largely decoupled because of their significant difference in strength at the strong- and weak-interaction limits. This allows the much weaker interlayer magnetic coupling to be more feasibly tuned by stacking orders solely. Given the fact that interlayer magnetic properties can be altered by changing crystal structure with different stacking orders, our work opens a new paradigm for tuning interlayer magnetic properties with the freedom of stacking order in two dimensional layered materials.

Abstract:By performing first-principles calculations, we find that the predominant spin exchange of a hexagonal CoO2 layer is in proximity to the ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition point. Its magnetic ground state can be easily altered by, e.g., substrate dielectricity and strain. In addition, the dopability of a stack of CoO2 layers is found to sensitively depend on the interlayer distance, which not only renders effective manipulation of the electronic property but also reveals an important intercalation effect in related bulk materials.

Abstract:Dimensionality can strongly influence the magnetic structure of solid systems. Here, we predict theoretically and confirm experimentally that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state of bulk gadolinium germanide metalloxene, which has a quasi-layered defective GdGe$_2$ structure, is preserved in the ultrathin film limit. \textit{Ab initio} calculations demonstrate that ultrathin GdGe$_2$ films present in-plane intra-layer ferromagnetic coupling and AFM inter-layer coupling in the ground state. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy finds the AFM-induced band splitting expected for the 2 and 3 GdGe$_2$ trilayer (TL) films, which disappear above the Néel temperature. The comparative analysis of isostructural ultrathin DyGe$_2$ and GdSi$_2$ films confirms the magnetic origin of the observed band splitting. These findings are in contrast with the recent report of ferromagnetism in ultrathin metalloxene films, which we ascribe to the presence of uncompensated magnetic moments.

Coexisting Magnetism, Ferroelectric, and Ferrovalley Multiferroic in Stacking-Dependent Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials have widespread of application prospects in facilitating the integration and miniaturization of nanodevices. However, it is rarely coupling between the magnetic, ferroelectric, and ferrovalley in one 2D material. Here, we propose a mechanism for manipulating magnetism, ferroelectric, and valley polarization by interlayer sliding in 2D bilayer material. Monolayer GdI2 exhibits a ferromagnetic semiconductor with the valley polarization up to 155.5 meV. More interestingly, the magnetism and valley polarization of bilayer GdI2 can be strongly coupled by sliding ferroelectricity, appearing these tunable and reversible. In addition, we uncover the microscopic mechanism of magnetic phase transition by spin Hamiltonian and electron hopping between layers. Our findings offer a new direction for investigating 2D multiferroic in the implication for next-generation electronic, valleytronic, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:Addressing the need for modulated spin configurations is crucial, as they serve as the foundational building blocks for next-generation spintronics, particularly in atomically thin structures and at room temperature. In this work, we realize intrinsic ferromagnetism in monolayer flakes and tunable ferro-/antiferromagnetism in (Fe0.56Co0.44)(5)GeTe2 antiferromagnets. Remarkably, the ferromagnetic ordering (>= 1 L) and antiferromagnetic ordering (>= 4 L) remain discernible up to room temperature. The T-C (similar to 310 K) of the monolayer flakes sets a record high for known exfoliated monolayer van der Waals magnets. Within the framework of A-type antiferromagnetism, a notable odd-even layer-number effect at elevated temperatures (T = 150 K) is observed. Of particular interest is the strong ferromagnetic order in even-layer flakes at low temperatures. The intricate interplay among magnetic field strength, layer number, and temperature gives rise to a diverse array of phenomena, holding promise not only for new physics but also for practical applications.

Abstract:Comparing with transition metal compounds, lanthanide compounds hold promising potential as spintronic materials to generate large magnetic moments and strong magnetic anisotropic. By conducting in-depth theoretical calculations, we explored the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer and bilayer Gd2C, the f-electron lanthanide compound. Monolayer Gd2C is a ferromagnetic (FM) half-metal with large band gap (1.68 eV) in the semiconducting spin-channel. It has large magnetic anisotropic energy (MAE) (703 μeV/Gd atom), and Curie temperature (TCdocumentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$T_{{ ext{C}}}$$end{document}) of 322 K, above room temperature and higher compared with Gd metal and layered Gd2C. Under 5% biaxial strain, its TCdocumentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$T_{{ ext{C}}}$$end{document} increases to 392 K. The robust half-metallicity of monolayer Gd2C is highly desirable for spin current generation and injection. In addition, we found that bilayer Gd2C maintains to be FM at all stacking orders. Two stable stacking configurations of bilayer Gd2C were identified; both are FM metals and may co-exist at room temperature. Our results demonstrate potential applications of 2D lanthanide compound Gd2C in the field of spintronics.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials have been discovered with tunable magnetism and orbital-driven nodal-line features. Controlling the 2D magnetism in exfoliated nanoflakes via electric/magnetic fields enables the boosted Curie temperature (TC) or phase transitions. One of the challenges, however, is the realization of high TC 2D magnets that are tunable, robust and suitable for large scale fabrication. Here, we report molecular-beam epitaxy growth of wafer-scale Fe3+XGeTe2 films with TC above-room-temperature. By controlling the Fe composition in Fe3+XGeTe2, a continuously-modulated TC in a broad range of 185–320 K has been achieved. This widely tunable TC is attributed to the doped interlayer Fe that provide a 40% enhancement around the optimal composition X = 2. We further fabricated magnetic tunneling junction device arrays that exhibit clear tunneling signals. Our results show an effective and reliable approach, i.e. element doping, to produce robust and tunable ferromagnetism beyond room temperature in a large-scale 2D Fe3+XGeTe2 fashion.

Abstract:Magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements were performed on solution-grown single crystals of six $\text{Gd}{T}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$ ($T=\text{Fe}$, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, and Ir) compounds, as well as on their Y analogs. For the Gd compounds, the Fe column members manifest a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state (with an enhanced Curie temperature ${T}_{C}$ for $T=\text{Fe}$ and Ru), whereas the Co column members manifest an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state. Thermodynamic measurements on $\text{Y}{T}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$ revealed that the enhanced ${T}_{C}$ for ${\text{GdFe}}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$ and ${\text{GdRu}}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$ can be understood within the framework of Heisenberg moments embedded in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid. Furthermore, electronic structure calculations indicate that this significant enhancement is due to a large transition metal partial density of states at the Fermi level that places these compounds close to the Stoner FM criterion. The change from FM to AFM ordering (between the Fe and Co column materials) is associated with the filling of electronic states with two additional electrons/f.u. The degree of this sensitivity is addressed by the studies of the pseudoternary compounds $\text{Gd}{({\text{Fe}}_{x}{\text{Co}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x})}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$ and $\text{Y}{({\text{Fe}}_{x}{\text{Co}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x})}_{2}{\text{Zn}}_{20}$, which clearly reveal the effect of $3d$-band filling on their magnetic properties.

Abstract:The exploration of topological states is of significant fundamental and practical importance in contemporary condensed matter physics, for which the extension to two-dimensional (2D) organometallic systems is particularly attractive. Using first-principles calculations, we show that a 2D hexagonal triphenyl-lead lattice composed of only main group elements is susceptible to a magnetic instability, characterized by a considerably more stable antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state rather than the topologically nontrivial quantum spin Hall state proposed recently. Even though thisAFMphase is topologically trivial, it possesses an intricate emergent degree of freedom, defined by the product of spin and valley indices, leading to Berry curvature-induced spin and valley currents under electron or hole doping. Furthermore, such a trivial band insulator can be tuned into a topologically nontrivial matter by the application of an out-of-plane electric field, which destroys the AFM order, favoring instead ferrimagnetic spin ordering and a quantum anomalous Hall state with a nonzero topological invariant. These findings further enrich our understanding of 2D hexagonal organometallic lattices for potential applications in spintronics and valleytronics.

Abstract:Ferrimagnetic Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) is the prototypical material for studying magnonic properties due to its exceptionally low damping. By substituting the yttrium with other rare earth elements that have a net magnetic moment, we can introduce an additional spin degree of freedom. Here, we study the magnetic coupling in epitaxial Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Gd$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG/GIG) heterostructures grown by pulsed laser deposition. From bulk sensitive magnetometry and surface sensitive spin Seebeck effect (SSE) and spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) measurements, we determine the alignment of the heterostructure magnetization through temperature and external magnetic field. The ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe sublattices of YIG and GIG dominates the overall behavior of the heterostructures. Due to the temperature dependent gadolinium moment, a magnetic compensation point of the total bilayer system can be identified. This compensation point shifts to lower temperatures with increasing thickness of YIG due the parallel alignment of the iron moments. We show that we can control the magnetic properties of the heterostructures by tuning the thickness of the individual layers, opening up a large playground for magnonic devices based on coupled magnetic insulators. These devices could potentially control the magnon transport analogously to electron transport in giant magnetoresistive devices.

Abstract:The interlayer coupling in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials is significantly important in determining the properties of 2D materials and applications of related devices. However, the mechanism that determines the interlayer magnetic coupling has only been comprehensively studied in CrI3 and that of transition metal dichalcogenides is still blurred. In this work, through first-principle calculations, we find in 2D magnetic bilayer that the interlayer magnetic coupling is determined by the stacking order of interlayer nonmagnetic atoms, accompanied by the transition between half metal and semiconductor in MnS2. The nonmagnetic atoms bridge the interlayer coupling and the stacking order of nonmagnetic atoms determines the interlayer coupling by altering the interlayer p(z)-orbital bonding. Adjusting the structure of interlayer nomagnetic atoms by biaxial strain can also tune the interlayer coupling. The perspective proposed in our work, from the stacking order of nonmagnetic atoms, to understand the interlayer magnetic coupling is also applicable in other 2D materials.
Oxidation tuning of ferroic transitions in Gd$_2$C monolayer

Abstract:Tuning of ferroic phases provides great opportunities for material functionalities, especially in two-dimensional materials. Here, a $4f$ rare-earth carbide Gd$_2$C monolayer is predicted to be ferromagnetic metal with large magnetization, inherited from its bulk property. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a strategy that the surface passivation can effectively tune its ferroicity, namely switching among ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and ferroelectric phases. Metal-insulator transition also occurs accompanying these ferroic transitions. Our calculation also suggests that the magneto-optic Kerr effect and second harmonic generation are effective methods to monitor these phase transitions.

Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional magnets with intrinsic ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic orders has opened up promising prospects for exploring magnetism at the desired thickness, paving the way for novel spintronic applications. In practice, the manipulation of the magnetic state in van der Waals ferromagnets is highly demanding but remains a significant challenge. In this work, we demonstrate that the magnetic states of the Fe5GeTe2 (FGT)-based heterostructures can be substantially tuned through a natural oxidation process. During this process, the exchange bias effect is observed in the naturally oxidized FGT flakes, confirming the existence of exchange coupling between the ferromagnetic FGT layer and antiferromagnetic oxide layer. Through the exchange coupling, the formed oxide layer affects the magnetic ordering of the Fe1 sites and magnetic anisotropy, which is evidenced by the increment of hard magnetic temperature. Theoretical calculations shed light on the crucial role of the oxide layer in the magnetic state transitions. These results provide valuable insights into the understanding and manipulation of the emergent magnetic states, leading to significant advances in the realization of practical two-dimensional spintronics.

Abstract:Intrinsic magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted much attention, especially Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ (FGT), which exhibits highly tunable properties. However, despite vast efforts, there are still several challenging issues to be resolved. Here using a first-principles linear-response approach, we carry out comprehensive investigation of both bulk and monolayer FGT. We find that although the magnetic exchange interactions in FGT are frustrated, our Monte Carlo simulations agree with the total energy calculations, confirming that the ground state of bulk FGT is indeed ferromagnetic (FM). A tiny electron doping reduces the magnetic frustration, resulting in significant increasing of the Curie temperature. We also calculate the spin-wave dispersion, and find a small spin gap as well as a nearly flat band in the magnon spectra. These features can be used to compare with the future neutron scattering measurement and finally clarify the microscopic magnetic mechanism in this two-dimensional family materials.

Abstract: The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired in order to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, contributing to future applications.
