Abstract:This paper presents a design for a new type of contra-rotating propeller (CRP) suitable for attitude adjustment of deep-sea submersibles with a low advance ratio to achieve the desired engineering design constraints of 3000 W twin electric rotors, total thrust over 800 N, and revolutions under 900 rpm. CFD and EFD methods are adopted in the optimal design process, in which a standard CRP4 integrated with DTMB3686 and DTMB3849 conventional propellers is set up and parameterized in terms of propeller diameter, pitch ratio, blade area ratio, end-plate variation, and spacing ratio. The open-water performance and appropriate spacing ratio of the CRP are then analyzed by CFD simulation. To determine the 3000 W power constrained diameters and to enhance efficiency, the blade-tip direction in rake, skew, and pitch parameters and combination types are studied to enhance the end-plate effect of the CRP blade. The performance of the proposed novel CRP-Kappel is significantly enhanced after analysis of cavitation; it meets the thrust target of 800 N at 3000 W power and shows a 17.78% improvement in efficiency compared to the CRP4, while the power margin is increased by 14.07% at 800 rpm. The experimental verification error of the CRP-Kappel is less than 5%.
