Abstract:By using one-dimensional photon state-vector function obtained previously, a general analytic expression is deduced for the optical two-hole interference experiment, which not only greatly enlarges the range of the observable, but also completely represents the probability distribution for a photon in the whole space. On the basis of the basic rules of quantum optics, we quantitatively analyze and discuss the domain of definition of the experiment, and the quantum behavior of the interference item on the average of space.

Abstract:The simple system of two atoms couple to single mode optical cavity with the phase decoherence is studied for investigating the entanglement and Bell violation between atoms and cavity or between two atoms. We show that in the resonance case (i) atom-field entanglement rapidly decays with phase decoherence and disappears in the stationary state, (ii) atom-atom entanglement is more robust against phase decoherence and survives in the stationary state. In the nonresonance case, the pairwise atom-atom and atom-field entanglement is sensitive to the detuning parameter and is not completely destroyed during evolution. On the other hand, violation of Bell-CHSH inequality is very fragile against the phase decoherence and finally disappears in the stationary state. The phenomenon that the more Bell violation, the less entanglement, or vice versa in such a realistic physical system, is revealed. This phenomenon maybe is the consequence of the choice of concurrence as the entanglement measure and the observables to build the Bell-CHSH inequality. The genuine three-partite entanglement is also analyzed by making use of the state preparation fidelity. It is shown that the genuine three-partite entanglement can appear in the evolution of the system even in the presence of the phase decoherence.
Perturbation theory scope for predicting vibronic selectivity by entangled two photon absorption

Abstract:Using second-order perturbation theory in the light-matter interaction, we derive an analytical approximation for the vibronic populations of a diatomic system excited by ultrabroadband frequency entangled photons and evaluate the population dynamics for different degrees of entanglement between photon pairs. Our analytical approach make the same predictions as previously derived via numerical solutions of the complete Schrödinger equation [H. Oka, Physical Review A 97, 063859 (2018)], with the added advantage of providing clear physical insights into the vibronic selectivity as a function of the degree of photon correlations while requiring significantly reduced computational effort. Specifically, our analytical expression for the probability of vibronic excitation includes a factor which predicts the enhancement of vibrational selectivity as a function of the degree correlation between the entangled photon pairs, the targeted vibrational energy level, and the vibrational molecular structure encoded in the Franck-Condon factors. Our results illustrate the importance of going beyond the usual approximations in second-order perturbation theory to capture the relevance of the vibrational structure of the molecular system of interest in order to gain a deeper understanding of the possible quantum-enhancement provided by the interaction between quantum light and matter.

Abstract:Broadband energy-time entanglement can be used to enhance the rate of two-photon absorption (TPA) by combining a precise two-photon resonance with a very short coincidence time. Because of this short coincidence time, broadband TPA is not sensitive to the spectrum of intermediate levels, making it the optimal choice when the intermediate transitions are entirely virtual. In the case of distinct intermediate resonances, it is possible to enhance TPA by introducing a phase dispersion that matches the intermediate resonances. Here, we consider the effects of a phase flip in the single photon spectrum, where the phases of all frequencies above a certain frequency are shifted by half a wavelength relative to the frequencies below this frequency. The frequency at which the phase is flipped can then be scanned to reveal the position of intermediate resonances. We find that a resonant phase flip maximizes the contributions of the asymmetric imaginary part of the dispersion that characterizes a typical resonance, resulting in a considerable enhancement of the TPA rate. Due to the bosonic symmetry of TPA, the enhancement is strongest when the resonance occurs when the frequency difference of the two photons is much higher than the linewidth of the resonance. Our results indicate that broadband entangled TPA with spectral phase flips may be suitable for phase-sensitive spectroscopy at the lower end of the spectrum where direct photon detection is difficult.

Abstract:Two-photon absorption (TPA) and other nonlinear interactions of molecules with time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) has been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects. Therefore, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This paper presents in tutorial style a detailed theoretical study of one- and two-photon absorption by molecules, focusing on how to treat the quantum nature of light. We review some basic quantum optics theory, then we review the density-matrix (Liouville) derivation of molecular optical response, emphasizing how to incorporate quantum states of light into the treatment. For illustration we treat in detail the TPA of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down conversion, with an emphasis on how quantum light TPA differs from that with classical light. In particular, we treat the question of how much enhancement of the TPA rate can be achieved using entangled states. The paper includes review of known theoretical methods and results, as well as some extensions, especially the comparison of TPA processes that occur via far-off-resonant intermediate states only and those that involve off-resonant intermediate state by virtue of dephasing processes. A brief discussion of the main challenges facing experimental studies of entangled TPA is also given.

Abstract:Over the last 50 years entangled photon pairs have received attention for use in lowering the flux in two-photon absorption imaging and spectroscopy. Despite this, evidence for entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) effects remain highly debated, especially at low-fluxes. Here, we structure the transverse spatial correlations of entangled photon pairs to evidence signs of ETPA at room-temperature in organic and inorganic chromophores, in the low-flux regime. We demonstrate our scheme to be robust to common artifacts that have previously hampered detection of ETPA such as linear absorption and background fluorescence, and show that ETPA scales with transverse correlation area and chromophore two-photon cross-sections. Our results present a step towards verifying ETPA and experimentally exploring entangled light-matter interactions.

Abstract:We show that two-photon transport can be modulated by a two-level emitter coupled to a cavity in a one-dimensional waveguide. In the ordinary case, the transmitted light has a wider frequency spectrum than the situation without the cavity because it is reflected and scattered many times. But when the two photons are resonant with the cavity resonance reflection frequency, the frequency spectrum of the transmitted light becomes narrower than that without the cavity. This means that properly tuning the cavity resonance frequency can improve the photon-photon interaction. In addition, we show that the two-photon intensity correlation functions are nearly opposite to each other at the two sides of the emitter transition frequency rather than be the same, which is exactly the Fano resonance line shape for two photons. Such an effect is important for lowering the power threshold in optical bistable devices and for sensing applications. When the emitter transition frequency equals to the cavity resonance frequency for a high-Q cavity, our results agree with the recent experiments and theories.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying the dynamic processes of molecular systems in condensed phases. However, in molecular systems containing many dye molecules, the spectra can become crowded and difficult to interpret owing to the presence of multiple nonlinear optical contributions. In this work, we theoretically propose time-resolved spectroscopy based on the coincidence counting of two entangled photons generated via parametric down-conversion with a monochromatic laser. We demonstrate that the use of two-photon counting detection of entangled photon pairs enables the selective elimination of the excited-state absorption signal. This selective elimination cannot be realized with classical coherent light. We anticipate that the proposed spectroscopy will help to simplify the spectral interpretation in complex molecular and materials systems comprising multiple molecules.

Abstract:We study a general theory on the interference of two-photon wavepacket in a beam splitter. We find that the symmetry of two-photon spectrum plays an important role in the manners of interference. We distinguish the coalescence and anti-coalescence interferences, and prove that the anti-coalescence interference is the signature of photon entanglement.

Abstract:For dissipation-free photon-photon interaction at the single photon level, we analyze one-photon transition and two-photon transition induced by photon pairs in three-level atoms using two-photon wavefunctions. We show that the two-photon absorption can be substantially enhanced by adjusting the time correlation of photon pairs. We study two typical cases: Gaussian wavefunction and rectangular wavefunction. In the latter, we find that under special conditions one-photon transition is completely suppressed while the high probability of two-photon transition is maintained.

Abstract:While two-photon absorption (TPA) and other forms of nonlinear interactions of molecules with isolated time-frequency-entangled photon pairs (EPP) have been predicted to display a variety of fascinating effects, their potential use in practical quantum-enhanced molecular spectroscopy requires close examination. This paper presents a detailed theoretical study of quantum-enhanced TPA by both photon-number correlations and spectral correlations, including an account of the deleterious effects of dispersion. While such correlations in EPP created by spontaneous parametric down conversion can increase the TPA rate significantly in the regime of extremely low optical flux, we find that for typical molecules in solution this regime corresponds to such low TPA event rates as to be unobservable in practice. Our results support the usefulness of EPP spectroscopy in atomic or other narrow-linewidth systems, while questioning the efficacy of such approaches for broadband systems including molecules in solution.

Abstract:The use of entangled photons in an imaging system can exhibit effects that cannot be mimicked by any other two-photon source, whatever the strength of the correlations between the two photons. We consider a two-photon imaging system in which one photon is used to probe a remote (transmissive or scattering) object, while the other serves as a reference. We discuss the role of entanglement versus correlation in such a setting, and demonstrate that entanglement is a prerequisite for achieving distributed quantum imaging.

Abstract:Entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) could form the basis of nonlinear quantum spectroscopy at very low photon fluxes, since, at sufficiently low photon fluxes, ETPA scales linearly with the photon flux. When different pairs start to overlap temporally, accidental coincidences are thought to give rise to a 'classical' quadratic scaling which dominates the signal at large photon fluxes and thus recovers a supposedly classical regime, where any quantum advantage is thought to be lost. Here we scrutinize this assumption and demonstrate that quantum-enhanced absorption cross sections can persist even to very large photon numbers. To this end, we use a minimal model for quantum light, which can interpolate continuously between the entangled pair and a high-photon-flux limit, to derive analytically ETPA cross sections and the intensity crossover regime. We investigate the interplay between spectral and spatial degrees of freedom, how linewidth broadening of the sample impacts the experimentally achievable enhancement.

Abstract:Path-entangled N-photon states can be obtained through the coalescence of indistinguishable photons inside linear networks. They are key resources for quantum enhanced metrology, quantum imaging, as well as quantum computation based on quantum walks. However, the quantum tomography of path-entangled indistinguishable photons is still in its infancy as it requires multiple phase estimations increasing rapidly with N. Here, we propose and implement a method to measure the quantum tomography of path-entangled two-photon states. A two-photon state is generated through the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of highly indistinguishable single photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot-cavity device. To access both the populations and the coherences of the path-encoded density matrix, we introduce an ancilla spatial mode and perform photon correlations as a function of a single phase in a split Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We discuss the accuracy of standard quantum tomography techniques and show that an overcomplete data set can reveal spatial coherences that could be otherwise hidden due to limited or noisy statistics. Finally, we extend our analysis to extract the truly indistinguishable part of the density matrix, which allows us to identify the main origin for the imperfect fidelity to the maximally entangled state.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate temporal dynamics of the second order cross correlation function at zero delay time (G12(2)(t)) and spectral entanglement of two photons emitted from an atomic three-level cascade. In Heisenberg's picture, a closed set of quantum kinetic equations of motion for G12(2)(t) is derived within density matrix formalism with cluster expansion rule. G12(2)(t) shows qualitatively distinctive features depending on the spectral entanglement of two photons. Although incoherent photon pairs generated from spontaneous radiation of the excited electron are not entangled, their correlation and anti-correlation properties can be found in G12(2)(t) depending on the radiative decay rates. In the coherent excitation regime where the light emitter is located in a high Q-cavity, and its atomic polarizations are predominantly initialized, spectral entanglement between two coherent photons is established. We show that G12(2)(t) is well fitted by the entanglement criterion by Duan-Giedke-Cirac-Zoller and explain the close relationship between them by means of the optically forbidden transition in the three-level cascade.
