Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of quantum correlation between two noninteracting qubits each inserted in its own finite-temperature environment with 1/f spectral density. It is found that the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence exists in the system when two qubits are initially prepared in X-type quantum states, and the transition time depends on the initial-state of two qubits, the qubit–environment coupling constant and the temperature of the environment. Furthermore, we explore the influence of dynamical decoupling pulses on the transition time and show that it can be prolonged by applying the dynamical decoupling pulses.

Abstract: Time evolution is an indivisible part in any physics theory. It is now known that there are also correlation in evolutions of quantum systems. In this paper, we generalize the entangled-history theory to arbitrary quantum states and quantum channels. Seeing quantum channels as temporal correlations in quantum mechanics, we show how to describe this temporal correlation based on our generalization. Besides, we give a physical explanation of the entanglement of a quantum channel's Choi matrix and show the relation between temporal correlation and coherence in quantum mechanics.
Enhancing Quantum Discord in Cavity Qed by an Added Nonlinear Kerr-Like Medium

Abstract:We investigate the quantum discord dynamics of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a single-mode optical cavity which is filled with a nonlinear Kerr-like medium. It is found that quantum discord vanishes only asymptotically although entanglement disappears suddenly during the time evolution. Furthermore, we explore the influence of the nonlinear Kerr-like medium on the dynamics of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms. It is shown that the amount of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms can be improved by adjusting the value of the Kerr medium. Finally, we also study the effect of phase dissipation on this system by making use of the Monte Carlo wavefunction method. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We use a three-level artificial atom in the ladder configuration as a source of correlated, single microwave photons of different frequency. The artificial atom, a transmon-type superconducting circuit, is driven at the two-photon transition between ground and second-excited state, and embedded into an on-chip switch that selectively routes different-frequency photons into different spatial modes. Under continuous driving, we measure power cross-correlations between the two modes and observe a crossover between strong antibunching and superbunching, typical of cascade decay, and an oscillatory pattern as the drive strength becomes comparable to the radiative decay rate. By preparing the source in a superposition state using an excitation pulse, we achieve deterministic generation of entangled photon pairs, as demonstrated by nonvanishing phase correlations and more generally by joint quantum state tomography of the two itinerant photonic modes.

Abstract:The ladder configuration of atomic levels provides a source for telecom photons (signal) from the upper atomic transition. \ For rubidium and cesium atoms, the signal field has the range around 1.3-1.5 $\mu$m that can be coupled to an optical fiber and transmitted to a remote location. \ Cascade emission may result in pairs of photons, the signal entangled with the subsequently emitted infrared photon (idler) from the lower atomic transition.\ This correlated two-photon source is potentially useful in the (Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller) DLCZ protocol for the quantum repeater.\ We implement the cascade emission to construct a modified DLCZ quantum repeater and investigate the role of time-frequency entanglement in the protocol.\ The dependence of protocol on photon-number resolving and non-resolving detectors is also studied.\ We find that frequency entanglement deteriorates the performance but the harmful effect can be diminished by using shorter pump pulses to generate the cascade emission.\ An optimal cascade-emission-based DLCZ scheme is realized by applying a pure two-photon source in addition to using detectors of perfect quantum efficiency.

Scattering of few photons by a ladder-type quantum system

Abstract:We consider the inelastic scattering of few photons by a ladder-type quantum system residing in a semi-infinite waveguide. Two scenarios, namely 2-photon scattering and 3-photon scattering, are investigated. The single photons are described by continuous temporal pulse functions, according to which the exact forms of the stationary output field states can be derived. Based on the exact analysis of the nonlinear dynamics, the spectral entanglement among the output photons mediated by the ladder-type quantum system is simulated. In the 2-photon scattering case, strong correlation between the output photons can be observed if each input photon is in resonance with a transition frequency of the system. In particular, there exists a weak two-photon process for the non-resonance case, where two input photons can couple to the transition between the first and third levels of the system if a two-photon resonance condition is satisfied. In the 3-photon scattering case, the presence of an ancillary photon could significantly influence the correlation pattern. There exist two nonlinear terms, one is for 2-photon inelastic scattering and the other for 3-photon inelastic scattering, in the 3-photon output state. As a result, both two-photon and three-photon processes can be observed in the pattern of spectral entanglement.

Abstract:In this thesis, we investigate the quantum mechanical interaction of light with matter in the form of a gas of ultracold atoms: the atomic ensemble. We present a theoretical analysis of two problems, which involve the interaction of quantized electromagnetic fields (called signal and idler) with the atomic ensemble (i) cascade two-photon emission in an atomic ladder configuration, and (ii) photon frequency conversion in an atomic diamond configuration. The motivation of these studies comes from potential applications in long-distance quantum communication where it is desirable to generate quantum correlations between telecommunication wavelength light fields and ground level atomic coherences. We develop a theory of correlated signal-idler pair correlation. The analysis is complicated by the possible generation of multiple excitations in the atomic ensemble. An analytical treatment is given in the limit of a single excitation assuming adiabatic laser excitations. The analysis predicts superradiant timescales in the idler emission in agreement with experimental observation. To relax the restriction of a single excitation, we develop a different theory of cascade emission, which is solved by numerical simulation of classical stochastic differential equation using the theory of open quantum systems. The simulations are in good qualitative agreement with the analytical theory of superradiant timescales. We provide a quantum theory of near-infrared to telecom wavelength conversion in the diamond configuration. The system provides a crucial part of a quantum-repeater memory element, which enables a "stored" near-infrared photon to be converted to a telecom wavelength for transmission without the destruction of light-atom quantum correlation.

Correlated Photons and Collective Excitations of a Cyclic Atomic Ensemble

Abstract:We systematically study the interaction between two quantized optical fields and a cyclic atomic ensemble driven by a classic optical field. This so-called atomic cyclic ensemble consists of three-level atoms with Delta-type transitions due to the symmetry breaking, which can also be implemented in the superconducting quantum circuit by Yu-xi Liu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 087001 (2005)]. We explore the dynamic mechanisms to creating the quantum entanglements among photon states, and between photons and atomic collective excitations by the coherent manipulation of the atom-photon system. It is shown that the quantum information can be completely transferred from one quantized optical mode to another, and the quantum information carried by the two quantized optical fields can be stored in the collective modes of this atomic ensemble by adiabatically controlling the classic field Rabi frequencies.
Quantum correlations of the photon fields in a waveguide quantum electrodynamics

Abstract:We present a time-dependent quantum calculations of the first order and second order photon correlation functions for the scattering of a single-photon pulse on a two-level atom (qubit) embedded in a one-dimensional open waveguide. Within Markov approximation we find the analytic expression for the quantum operator of positive frequency electric field. We restricted Hilbert space of initial states by the states with one and two excitations and show that the photon probability amplitudes are given by the off-diagonal matrix elements of the electric field operator between these states. For two-excitation initial state where the atom is excited and there exists a single photon in a waveguide we calculate the second order correlation function which describes the measurements by two detectors at two different space-time points. The second order correlation function exhibits the interference term showing that the measurements of two detectors are correlated. This interference is similar to that found in the Hanbury Brown and Twiss correlation experiment with two indistinguishable photons.

Abstract:Quantum interference and quantum correlation, as two main features of quantum optics, play an essential role in quantum information applications, such as multi-particle quantum walk and boson sampling. While many experimental demonstrations have been done in one-dimensional waveguide arrays, it remains unexplored in higher dimensions due to tight requirement of manipulating and detecting photons in large-scale. Here, we experimentally observe non-classical correlation of two identical photons in a fully coupled two-dimensional structure, i.e. photonic lattice manufactured by three-dimensional femtosecond laser writing. Photon interference consists of 36 Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and 9 bunching. The overlap between measured and simulated distribution is up to $0.890\pm0.001$. Clear photon correlation is observed in the two-dimensional photonic lattice. Combining with controllably engineered disorder, our results open new perspectives towards large-scale implementation of quantum simulation on integrated photonic chips.

Abstract:We consider the statistical properties of eigenstates of the time-evolution operator in chaotic many-body quantum systems. Our focus is on correlations between eigenstates that are specific to spatially extended systems and that characterise entanglement dynamics and operator spreading. In order to isolate these aspects of dynamics from those arising as a result of local conservation laws, we consider Floquet systems in which there are no conserved densities. The correlations associated with scrambling of quantum information lie outside the standard framework established by the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis (ETH). In particular, ETH provides a statistical description of matrix elements of local operators between pairs of eigenstates, whereas the aspects of dynamics we are concerned with arise from correlations amongst sets of four or more eigenstates. We establish the simplest correlation function that captures these correlations and discuss features of its behaviour that are expected to be universal at long distances and low energies. We also propose a maximum-entropy Ansatz for the joint distribution of a small number $n$ of eigenstates. In the case $n = 2$ this Ansatz reproduces ETH. For $n = 4$ it captures both the growth with time of entanglement between subsystems, as characterised by the purity of the time-evolution operator, and also operator spreading, as characterised by the behaviour of the out-of-time-order correlator. We test these ideas by comparing results from Monte Carlo sampling of our Ansatz with exact diagonalisation studies of Floquet quantum circuits.

Abstract:The role of the timing and order of quantum measurements is not just a fundamental question of quantum mechanics, but also a puzzling one. Any part of a quantum system that has finished evolving, can be measured immediately or saved for later, without affecting the final results, regardless of the continued evolution of the rest of the system. In addition, the non-locality of quantum mechanics, as manifested by entanglement, does not apply only to particles with spatial separation, but also with temporal separation. Here we demonstrate these principles by generating and fully characterizing an entangled pair of photons that never coexisted. Using entanglement swapping between two temporally separated photon pairs we entangle one photon from the first pair with another photon from the second pair. The first photon was detected even before the other was created. The observed quantum correlations manifest the non-locality of quantum mechanics in spacetime.
Correlations in Circular Quantum Cascades

Abstract:We introduce a one-way, one-quantum cascade, whereby a single excitation proceeds one-directionwise in a ladder of energy levels. This makes a variation from more famous two-way cascades where the excitation can go up and down following its excitation or relaxation in the ladder. We provide closed-form solutions for two-photon correlation functions between any transitions in such circular cascades. We discuss how the rich correlations that result from what appears to be an extremely simple implementation, are essentially those which have been entertained from complex architectures relying on strongly-correlated, many-body physics or cavity QED effects.

Abstract:The sequential resonant excitation of a 2-level quantum system results in the emission of a state of light showing time-entanglement encoded in the photon-number-basis - notions that can be extended to 3-level quantum systems as discussed in a recent proposal. Here, we report the experimental implementation of a sequential two-photon resonant excitation process of a solid-state 3-level system, constituted by the biexciton-, exciton-, and ground-state of a semiconductor quantum dot. The resulting light state exhibits entanglement in time and energy, encoded in the photon-number basis, which could be used in quantum information applications, e.g., dense information encoding or quantum communication protocols. Performing energy- and time-resolved correlation experiments in combination with extensive theoretical modelling, we are able to partially retrieve the entanglement structure of the generated state.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium photon correlations of coherently excited single quantum systems can reveal their internal quantum dynamics and provide spectroscopic access. Here we propose and discuss the fundamentals of a coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy based on the application of laser pulses with variable delay and the detection of an time-averaged two-photon coincidence rate. For demonstration, two simple but important cases, i.e., an exciton - biexciton in a quantum dot and two coupled quantum emitters, are investigated based on quantum dynamics simulations demonstrating that this nonlinear spectroscopy reveals information specific to the particular single quantum system.

Abstract:We study the nonlinear spectra and multi-photon correlation functions for the waveguide output of a two-level system (including realistic dissipation channels) with a time-delayed coherent feedback. We compute these observables by extending a recent quantum trajectory discretized-waveguide (QTDW) approach which exploits quantum trajectory simulations and a collisional model for the waveguide to tractably simulate the dynamics. Following a description of the general technique, we show how to calculate the first and second order quantum correlation functions, in the presence of a coherent pumping field. With a short delay time, we show how feedback can be used to filter out the central peak of the Mollow triplet or switch the output between bunched and anti-bunched photons by proper choice of round trip phase. We further show how the loop length and round trip phase effects the zero-time second order quantum correlation function, an indicator of bunching or anti-bunching. New resonances introduced through the feedback loop are also shown through their appearance in the incoherent output spectrum from the waveguide. We explain these results in the context of the waiting time distributions of the system output and individual trajectories, uniquely stochastic observables that are easily accessible with the QTDW model.

Photon Correlations Generated by Inelastic Scattering in a One-Dimensional Waveguide Coupled to Three-Level Systems

Abstract:We study photon correlations generated by scattering from three-level systems (3LS) in one dimension. The two systems studied are a 3LS in a semi-infinite waveguide (3LS plus a mirror) and two 3LS in an infinite waveguide (double 3LS). Our two-photon scattering approach naturally connects photon correlation effects with inelastically scattered photons; it corresponds to input-output theory in the weak-probe limit. At the resonance where electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) occurs, we find that no photons are scattered inelastically and hence there are no induced correlations. Slightly away from EIT, the total inelastically scattered flux is large, being substantially enhanced due to the additional interference paths. This enhancement carries over to the two-photon correlation function, which exhibits non-classical behavior such as strong bunching with a very long time-scale. The long time scale originates from the slow-light effect associated with EIT.

Abstract:In this paper, the detailed inseparability criteria of entanglement quantification of correlated two-mode light generated by a three-level laser with a coherently driven parametric amplifier and coupled to a two-mode vacuum reservoir is thoroughly analyzed. Using the master equation, we obtain the stochastic differential equation and the correlation properties of the noise forces associated with the normal ordering. Next, we study the squeezing and the photon entanglement by considering different inseparability criteria. The various criteria of entanglement used in this paper show that the light generated by the quantum optical system is entangled and the amount of entanglement is amplified by introducing the parametric amplifier into the laser cavity and manipulating the linear gain coefficient.
