Abstract:Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.'s study), although the metal's ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell's law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.

Abstract:Over the past years, nanostructured metalenses with thin form factors have been extensively studied for their potential in consumer and industrial applications. Despite significant advancements, current metalenses struggle to achieve high numerical aperture (NA), manufacturable structures, broad working bandwidth, and extended depth of focus (DOF) simultaneously. This paper introduces a comprehensive inverse design framework that facilitates the rapid development of polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, effective in both frequency and spatial domains. The framework employs shape-constrained topology optimization to define horizontal ring profiles, along with discrete particle swarm optimization to manage discretized ring heights. Two immersed silicon carbide metalenses are demonstrated to showcase this framework's capability, providing near-unity NAs for enhanced photon collection. The first design is an extended DOF metalens, exhibiting a DOF over four times the light wavelength and achieving a maximum diffraction efficiency of 23%, close to the theoretical limit. The second design achieves broadband achromaticity, suppressing chromatic aberrations across a wide 300 nm bandwidth (850-1150 nm) while maintaining an average diffraction efficiency of 10%. This methodology serves as a valuable tool for deploying functional metalenses with implications for nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum nanotechnology. An effective inverse design framework for polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, optimized for frequency and spatial domains is introduced. Using shape-constrained topology optimization and discrete particle swarm optimization, silicon carbide metalenses with extended-depth-of-focus and broadband achromaticity is developed across a 300 nm bandwidth, achieving maximum diffraction efficiencies of 23% and 13.6%, respectively. Abstract:Hybrid lenses are created by combining metasurface optics with refractive optics, where refractive elements contribute optical power, while metasurfaces correct optical aberrations. We present an algorithm for optimizing metasurface nanostructures within a hybrid lens, allowing flexible interleaving of metasurface and refractive optics in the optical train. To efficiently optimize metasurface nanostructures, we develop a scalar field, ray-wave hybrid propagation method. This method facilitates the propagation of incident and derived adjoint fields through optical elements, enabling effective metasurface optimization within the framework of adjoint gradient optimization. Numerical examples of various lens configurations are presented to illustrate the versatility of the algorithm and showcase the benefits offered by the proposed approach, allowing metasurfaces to be positioned beyond the image space of a lens. Taking a F/2, 40° field-of-view, midwave infrared lens as an example, the lens exhibits an average focusing efficiency of 38% before the integration of metasurfaces. Utilizing the new algorithm to design two metasurfaces-one in the object space and one in the image space-results in significant enhancement of the average focusing efficiency to over 90%. In contrast, a counterpart design with both metasurfaces limited to the image space yields a lower average focusing efficiency of 73%.

Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.

Abstract:Metasurface optical elements such as metalenses have drawn great attentions for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical devices into ultrathin counterparts, and multi-functional metasurfaces such as bifocal metalenses have attracted tremendous interests due to their potential in system integration. In this paper, an approach to design polarization-dependent bifocal metalenses which are able to independently generate longitudinally or transversely bifocal spots under the incidence of circularly polarized light with arbitrary ellipticity is proposed and demonstrated by full-wave simulations. When the designed devices are illuminated with elliptically polarized lights at wavelength of 532 nm, both of the helicity-multiplexed bifocal spots appear simultaneously, and the relative intensity of both focal spots can be tuned in terms of the ellipticity of the polarization state. In addition, a polarization-independent metalens based on geometric phase modulation is illustrated and the focusing efficiency of it maintains stable ignoring the polarization state of the incident waves, which could be of vital importance in real applications. This design is of enormous potential of being applied in real compact optical systems such as imaging, display, microscopy, tomography, optical data storage and so on.

Abstract:We present a design framework for metasurface that uses a hybrid approximate solver for Maxwell’s equations, which separates the computation for the metasurface’s nanoscale and macro-scale, and thus makes large-diameter inverse design tractable on a laptop. We further demonstrate experimental realizations of ultra-large-area metasurfaces designed using this framework: (1) a lens with extended depth of field with a millimeter diameter, and (2) polychromatic lenses with diameters of up to 1 cm.

Abstract:Metasurfaces typically have sizes much larger than the wavelength yet contain a large number of subwavelength features. Thus, it is difficult to design entire metasurfaces using full-wave simulations. However, without full-wave simulations, most existing design approaches cannot accurately model the interactions between the individual elements comprising the metasurface. Here, we demonstrate an approach for the design of resonant metasurfaces based on coupled-mode theory. Our approach fully describes wave dynamics and coupling in metasurfaces and is much more computationally efficient than full-wave simulations. As an example, we show that the combination of coupled-mode theory and adjoint optimization can be used for the inverse design of high-numerical-aperture (0.9) metalenses with sizes as large as 10000 wavelengths. The computation efficiency of our approach is orders of magnitude faster than full-wave simulations. Complex functionalities such as angle-multiplexed metasurface holograms can also be realized. Subwavelength Imaging with Composite Metamaterials

Abstract:After reviewing the requirements, which have to be satisfied by a metamaterial-based subwavelength imaging system, a thin film lens is reported herein. The material of the lens is a composite of spherical Ag nanoparticles embedded in SiO2 host material. The image of the lens is calculated by solving Maxwell equations with the transfer matrix method. The procedure applies the Maxwell–Garnett mixing rule and high-frequency effective medium theory to calculate the electromagnetic parameters of the composite material. The formula of the composite material, the optimum working frequency, and the thicknesses of the layers are determined by minimizing the absolute difference of the field distribution in the source and image planes. The details of the design procedure are presented, and optimized configurations obtained under different constraints are discussed. The main advantage of the composite lens is that it can eliminate the hot spots present in the images of metallic superlens.
Inverse design of dielectric metasurface by spatial coupled mode theory

Abstract:Modeling metasurfaces with high accuracy and efficiency is challenging because they have features smaller than the wavelength but sizes much larger than the wavelength. Full wave simulation is accurate but very slow. Popular design paradigms like locally periodic approximation (LPA) reduce the computational cost by neglecting, partially or fully, near-field interactions between meta-units and treating them in an isolated manner. The coupling between meta units has been fully considered by applying temporal coupled mode theory to model the metasurface. However, this method only works for resonance-based metasurfaces. To model the broadly studied dielectric metasurfaces based on the propagation of guided modes, we propose to model the whole system using spatial coupled mode theory (SCMT) where the dielectric metasurface can be viewed as an array of truncated waveguides. An inverse design routine based on this model is then devised and applied to gain improvements over LPA in several scenarios, such as high numerical aperture lens, multi-wavelength focusing, and suppression of coma aberrations. With its accuracy and efficiency, the proposed framework can be a powerful tool to improve the performance of dielectric metasurface on various tasks.

Abstract:The inverse design of optical metasurfaces is a rapidly emerging field that has already shown great promise in miniaturizing conventional optics as well as developing completely new optical functionalities. Such a design process relies on many forward simulations of a device's optical response in order to optimize its performance. We present a data-driven forward simulation framework for the inverse design of metasurfaces that is more accurate than methods based on the local phase approximation, a factor of $10^4$ times faster and requires $15$ times less memory than mesh based solvers, and is not constrained to spheroidal scatterer geometries. We explore the scattered electromagnetic field distribution from wavelength scale cylindrical pillars, obtaining low-dimensional representations of our data via the singular value decomposition. We create a differentiable model fiting the input geometries and configurations of our metasurface scatterers to the low-dimensional representation of the output field. To validate our model, we inverse design two optical elements: a wavelength multiplexed element that focuses light for $\lambda=633$nm and produces an annular beam at $\lambda=400$nm and an extended depth of focus lens.

Abstract:In this Letter, we adapt the direct search method to metasurface optimization. We show that the direct search algorithm, when coupled with deep learning techniques for free-form meta-atom generation, offers a computationally efficient optimization approach for metasurface optics. As an example, we apply the approach to optimization of achromatic metalenses. Taking advantage of the diverse dispersion responses of free-form meta-atoms, metalenses designed using this approach exhibit superior broadband performances compared to their multilevel diffractive counterparts. We further demonstrate an achromatic and wide-field-of-view metalens design.

Abstract:An anisotropic unit cell based on glide symmetry is proposed for tailoring a metasurface that engineers an optically transformed Luneburg lens. Thanks to the optical transformation, the size of the lens is reduced by 25%. The proposed lens is ultrawideband, and it covers multi-octave frequency bands. The required constitutive materials are achieved in an air gap bounded by top and bottom glide-symmetric metasurfaces; i.e., they are off-shifted by half the period. Each surface is implemented in standard printed-circuit-board technology, and its unit cell consists of a grounded substrate with an elliptical holey top cladding surrounded by metalized through-vias. This technology, known as substrate-integrated-holes (SIHs), mimics the operation of holes drilled in a parallel plate but provides the higher effective refractive index required for lens compression. The SIH is attractive for practical applications since most of the energy propagates in the air gap between the two surfaces and, therefore, it features low dielectric losses. Thanks to glide symmetry, the proposed metasurface demonstrates a further enhanced effective refractive index with lower dispersion over an ultra-wide bandwidth in comparison to its non-glide counterpart. A multimodal transfer-matrix approach is here employed to carry out the Bloch analysis of the proposed SIH.

Abstract:Most optical systems involve a combination of lenses separated by free-space regions where light acquires the required angle-dependent phase delay for a certain functionality. Very recently, flat-optics structures have been proposed to compress these large free-space volumes and miniaturize the overall optical system. However, these early designs can only replace free-space volumes of limited length, or operate in a very narrow angular range, or require a high-index background. These issues raise questions about the applicability of these devices in practical scenarios. Here, we first derive a fundamental trade-off between the length of compressed free space and the operating angular range, which explains some of the limitations of earlier designs, and we then propose a solution to relax this trade-off using nonlocal metasurface structures composed of suitably coupled resonant layers. This strategy, inspired by coupled-resonator-based band-pass microwave filters, allows replacing free-space volumes of arbitrary length over wide angular ranges, and with very high transmittance. Finally, we theoretically demonstrate, for the first time, the potential of combining local and nonlocal metasurfaces to realize compact, fully solid-state, planar structures for focusing, imaging, and magnification, in which the focal length of the lens (and, hence, its magnifying power) does not dictate the actual distance at which focusing is achieved. Abstract:By exploiting the generalized form of Snell’s law, metasurfaces afford optical engineers a tremendous increase in degrees of design freedom compared to conventional optical components. These “meta-optics” can achieve unprecedented levels of performance through engineered wavelength-, angular-, and polarization-dependent responses which can be tailored by arranging subwavelength unit cells, or meta-atoms, in an intelligent way. Moreover, these metaatoms can be constructed from phase change materials which give the added flexibility of realizing reconfigurable metaoptics. Devices such as achromatic flat lenses and non-mechanical zoom lenses are becoming a reality through the advent of metasurface-augmented optical systems. However, achieving high-performance meta-optics relies heavily on proper meta-atom design. This challenge is best overcome through the use of advanced inverse-design tools and state-ofthe- art optimization algorithms. To this end, a number of successful meta-device inverse-design approaches have been demonstrated in the literature including those based on topology optimization, deep learning, and global optimization. While each has its pros and cons, multi-objective optimization strategies have proven quite successful do their ability to optimize problems with multiple competing objectives: a common occurrence in optical design. Moreover, multiobjective algorithms produce a Pareto Set of optimal solutions that designers can analyze in order to directly study the tradeoffs between the various design goals. In our presentation, we will introduce an efficient multi-objective optimization enabled design framework for the generation of broadband and multifunctional meta-atoms. Additionally, several meta-optic design examples will be presented, and future research directions discussed.

Abstract:Large-area metasurfaces composed of discrete wavelength-scale scatterers present an extremely large number of degrees of freedom to engineer an optical element. These degrees of freedom provide tremendous design flexibility, and a central challenge in metasurface design is how to optimally leverage these degrees of freedom towards a desired optical function. Inverse design can be used to explore non-intuitive design space for metasurfaces. We report an inverse design method exploiting T-Matrix scattering of ellipsoidal scatterer based metasurfaces. Multifunctional, polarization multiplexed metasurfaces were designed using this approach. Finally, we apply this method to optimize the efficiency of an existing high numerical aperture (0.83)metalens design, and report an increase in efficiency from 26% to 32%

Abstract:The possibility of integration of two important categories of optical components, i.e., circular polarizer and lens, into a thin plasmonic metasurface is examined. After exploring general theoretical formulation, optimal designs to realize polarizing lenses at mid-infrared frequencies are presented, for the cases when metal losses cannot be neglected. A two-dimensional array of Y-shaped nanoantennas with polarization dependent and spatially varying phase response is the basis for such a unique compact polarizing lens, whose properties can have a high impact in integrated optics.
