Abstract:Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.'s study), although the metal's ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell's law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.

Abstract:Metasurface optical elements such as metalenses have drawn great attentions for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical devices into ultrathin counterparts, and multi-functional metasurfaces such as bifocal metalenses have attracted tremendous interests due to their potential in system integration. In this paper, an approach to design polarization-dependent bifocal metalenses which are able to independently generate longitudinally or transversely bifocal spots under the incidence of circularly polarized light with arbitrary ellipticity is proposed and demonstrated by full-wave simulations. When the designed devices are illuminated with elliptically polarized lights at wavelength of 532 nm, both of the helicity-multiplexed bifocal spots appear simultaneously, and the relative intensity of both focal spots can be tuned in terms of the ellipticity of the polarization state. In addition, a polarization-independent metalens based on geometric phase modulation is illustrated and the focusing efficiency of it maintains stable ignoring the polarization state of the incident waves, which could be of vital importance in real applications. This design is of enormous potential of being applied in real compact optical systems such as imaging, display, microscopy, tomography, optical data storage and so on.
High Efficient Metasurface for Broadband Achromatic Focusing in Visible Spectrum

Abstract:Metasurfaces are expected to realize the miniaturization of conventional refractive optics into planar structures; however, they suffer from large chromatic aberration due to the high phase dispersion of their subwavelength building blocks, limiting their real applications in imaging and displaying systems. In this paper, a high-efficient broadband achromatic metasurface (HBAM) is designed and numerically demonstrated to suppress the chromatic aberration in the continuous visible spectrum. The HBAM consists of TiO2 nanofins as the metasurface building blocks (MBBs) on a layer of glass as the substrate, providing a broadband response and high polarization conversion efficiency for circularly polarized incidences in the desired bandwidth. The phase profile of the metasurface can be separated into two parts: the wavelength -independent basic phase distribution represented by the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase, depending only on the orientations of the MBBs, and the wavelength-dependent phase dispersion part. The HBAM applies resonance tuning for compensating the phase dispersion, and further eliminates the chromatic aberration by integrating the phase compensation into the PB phase manipulation. The parameters of the HBAM structures are optimized in finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation for enhancing the efficiency and achromatic focusing performance. Using this approach, this HBAM is capable of focusing light of wavelengths covering the entire visible spectrum (from 400 nm to 700 nm) at the same focal plane with the spot sizes close to the diffraction limit. The minimum polarization conversion efficiency of most designed MBBS in such spectrum is above 20%. This design could be viable for various practical applications such as cameras and wearable optics.

Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.
Broadband Ultrasonic Focusing in Water with an Ultra-Compact Metasurface Lens

Abstract:Focusing of ultrasonic waves in water plays an important role in various scenarios ranging from biomedical imaging to nondestructive testing. Acoustic metasurfaces have been largely explored for acoustic focusing, but they are generally narrowband and mainly implemented for airborne sound because of their structural complexity. Nevertheless, our previous development of metasurfaces provides a great opportunity to solve the challenges. Here, we present numerically and experimentally the broadband focusing of ultrasonic waves in water with a metasurface lens consisting of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced slots. The slot widths of the metasurface are optimized based on microscopic coupled-wave theory. Due to the non-resonant arrangement, the focusing effect is demonstrated over a broad band of frequencies. The metasurface lens with simplicity and an ultra-compact size provides a feasible means for the design of thin and lightweight ultrasonic devices and is suitable for practical applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

Abstract:The possibility of integration of two important categories of optical components, i.e., circular polarizer and lens, into a thin plasmonic metasurface is examined. After exploring general theoretical formulation, optimal designs to realize polarizing lenses at mid-infrared frequencies are presented, for the cases when metal losses cannot be neglected. A two-dimensional array of Y-shaped nanoantennas with polarization dependent and spatially varying phase response is the basis for such a unique compact polarizing lens, whose properties can have a high impact in integrated optics.

Abstract:Reducing a set of diverse bulk-optic-based optical components to a single ultrathin and compact element that enables the same complex functionality has become an emerging research area, propelling further integration and miniaturization in photonics. In this work, we establish a versatile metasurface platform based on gap-surface plasmon meta-atoms enabling efficient linear-polarization conversion along with the complete phase control over reflected fields. Capitalizing on the meta-atom design, multifunctional metamirrors involving linear-polarization conversion and focusing are experimentally demonstrated to generate various kinds of focused beams with distinct phase distributions and wavefronts, reproducing thereby the combined functionalities of conventional half-wave plates, lenses, and even spatial light modulators. The proof-of-concept fabricated metamirrors exhibit excellent capability of linear-polarization conversion and focusing within the wavelength range from 800 to 950 nm under linearly-polarized excitation. The multifunctional metamirrors design developed in this study opens new avenues in the advanced research and applications targeting photonics integration of diversified functionalities.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern optics, optical elements have become an indispensable part of an optical system. A metasurface is a nanostructure composed of arrays of sub-wavelength scatterers and is widely used due to its simple structure, thin thickness, easy integration, and high utilization rate. This paper designs a polarization-multiplexed transmissive metasurface lens in the visible light band 690 nm and near-infrared light band 880 nm. The metasurface lens combines the x -polarized lens design with the y -polarized lens design to realize three metasurface lenses with dual wavelength and different polarization states under the same metasurface. The metasurface lenses are: a coaxial confocal metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 = f 2 =7 215 nm, an off-axis metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 = f 2 =7 221 nm and with a displacement of x d =±4 000 nm, and a coaxial metasurface lens with the focus length of f 1 =7 000 nm and f 2 =10 000 nm, respectively. They have not only a high numerical aperture of 0.8 but also a good focusing capability with a full width at half maximum close to diffraction limit, and their space utilization is also improved. This compact and highly numerical aperture and high spatial utilization of dual-wavelength polarization multiplexing metasurface design provides an effective solution for the development of focusing lens and has unique potentials and advantages in fluorescent microlens, optical imaging, etc.

Abstract:Abstract Metalenses, ultra-thin optical elements that focus light using subwavelength structures, have been the subject of a number of recent investigations. Compared to their refractive counterparts, metalenses offer reduced size and weight, and new functionality such as polarization control. However, metalenses that correct chromatic aberration also suffer from markedly reduced focusing efficiency. Here we introduce a Hybrid Achromatic Metalens (HAML) that overcomes this trade-off and offers improved focusing efficiency over a broad wavelength range from 1000–1800 nm. HAMLs can be designed by combining recursive ray-tracing and simulated phase libraries rather than computationally intensive global search algorithms. Moreover, HAMLs can be fabricated in low-refractive index materials using multi-photon lithography for customization or using molding for mass production. HAMLs demonstrated diffraction limited performance for numerical apertures of 0.27, 0.11, and 0.06, with average focusing efficiencies greater than 60% and maximum efficiencies up to 80%. A more complex design, the air-spaced HAML, introduces a gap between elements to enable even larger diameters and numerical apertures.

Abstract:Conventional metasurface reflector-arrays based on metallic resonant nanoantenna to control the wavefront of light for focusing always suffer from strong ohmic loss at optical frequencies. Here, we overcome this challenge by constructing a non-resonant, hybrid dielectric-metal configuration consisting of TiO2 nanofins associated with an Ag reflector substrate that provides a broadband response and high polarization conversion efficiency in the visible range. A reflective flat lens based on this configuration shows an excellent focusing performance with the spot size close to the diffraction limit. Furthermore, by employing the superimposed phase distribution design to manipulate the wavefront of the reflected light, various functionalities, such as multifocal and achromatic focusing, are demonstrated for the flat lenses. Such a reflective flat lens will find various applications in visible light imaging and sensing systems.

Abstract:Thin structured surfaces allow flexible control over the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Focusing and polarization state analysis are among functions, required for effective manipulation of radiation. Here, a polarization-sensitive Fresnel zone plate lens is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for gigahertz spectral range. Two spatially separated focal spots for orthogonal polarizations are obtained by designing metasurface pattern, made of overlapping tightly packed cross- and rod-shaped antennas with a strong polarization selectivity. The optimized subwavelength pattern allows multiplexing two different lenses with low polarization crosstalk on the same substrate and provides a control over focal spots of the lens only by changing the polarization state of the incident wave. More than a wavelength separation distance between the focal spots was demonstrated for a broad spectral range, covering half a decade in frequency. The proposed concept could be straightforwardly extended for terahertz and visible spectra, where polarization-sensitive elements utilize localized plasmon resonance phenomenon.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are paving the way to improve traditional optical components by integrating multiple functionalities into one optically flat metasurface design. We demonstrate the implementation of a multifunctional gap surface plasmon-based metasurface which, in reflection mode, splits orthogonal linear light polarizations and focuses into different focal spots. The fabricated configuration consists of 50 nm thick gold nanobricks with different lateral dimensions, organized in an array of 240 nm x 240 nm unit cells on the top of a 50 nm thick silicon dioxide layer, which is deposited on an optically thick reflecting gold substrate. Our device features high efficiency (up to ~65%) and polarization extinction ratio (up to ~30 dB), exhibiting broadband response in the near-infrared band (750-950 nm wavelength) with the focal length dependent on the wavelength of incident light. The proposed optical component can be forthrightly integrated into photonic circuits or fiber optic devices.

Abstract:Hybrid lenses are created by combining metasurface optics with refractive optics, where refractive elements contribute optical power, while metasurfaces correct optical aberrations. We present an algorithm for optimizing metasurface nanostructures within a hybrid lens, allowing flexible interleaving of metasurface and refractive optics in the optical train. To efficiently optimize metasurface nanostructures, we develop a scalar field, ray-wave hybrid propagation method. This method facilitates the propagation of incident and derived adjoint fields through optical elements, enabling effective metasurface optimization within the framework of adjoint gradient optimization. Numerical examples of various lens configurations are presented to illustrate the versatility of the algorithm and showcase the benefits offered by the proposed approach, allowing metasurfaces to be positioned beyond the image space of a lens. Taking a F/2, 40° field-of-view, midwave infrared lens as an example, the lens exhibits an average focusing efficiency of 38% before the integration of metasurfaces. Utilizing the new algorithm to design two metasurfaces-one in the object space and one in the image space-results in significant enhancement of the average focusing efficiency to over 90%. In contrast, a counterpart design with both metasurfaces limited to the image space yields a lower average focusing efficiency of 73%.
Polarization Multi-Image Synthesis with Birefringent Metasurfaces

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces composed of precisely engineered nanostructures have gained significant attention for their ability to manipulate light and implement distinct functionalities based on the properties of the incident field. Computational imaging systems have started harnessing this capability to produce sets of coded measurements that benefit certain tasks when paired with digital post-processing. Inspired by these works, we introduce a new system that uses a birefringent metasurface with a polarizer-mosaicked photosensor to capture four optically-coded measurements in a single exposure. We apply this system to the task of incoherent opto-electronic filtering, where digital spatial-filtering operations are replaced by simpler, per-pixel sums across the four polarization channels, independent of the spatial filter size. In contrast to previous work on incoherent opto-electronic filtering that can realize only one spatial filter, our approach can realize a continuous family of filters from a single capture, with filters being selected from the family by adjusting the post-capture digital summation weights. To find a metasurface that can realize a set of user-specified spatial filters, we introduce a form of gradient descent with a novel regularizer that encourages light efficiency and a high signal-to-noise ratio. We demonstrate several examples in simulation and with fabricated prototypes, including some with spatial filters that have prescribed variations with respect to depth and wavelength. Abstract:As planar optical elements, metasurfaces confer an unprecedented potential to manipulate light, which benefits from the deep control of the interactions between nanostructures and light. In the past decade, considerable progress has been made in various metasurfaces for on-demand functions, drawing great interest from the scientific community. However, it is a great challenge to integrate different functions into a single metasurface, due to the incapability of manipulating light at different dimensions and the lack of universal intelligent design strategy. Here, an intelligent design platform based on deep neural networks is proposed, which can map between structure parameters and optical response. The well-trained network model can intelligently retrieve nanostructures to meet multidimensional optical requirements of metasurfaces. Four metalenses for chiral focusing are realized by the design platform and the simulation results are highly consistent with the design target. In addition, metalenses based on arbitrary polarization at various working wavelength are also demonstrated, showing that the method has powerful design ability. Various optical properties of nanostructures, such as phase shift and polarization, are manipulated by deep neural networks, which can greatly promote the development of multifunctional devices and further pave the way for optical display, communication, computing, sensing, and other applications. Multifunctional metasurface design is a challenging problem. Here, an intelligent design platform based on deep neural networks is proposed and built a relationship between structure parameters and optical response. By this platform, polarization multiplexing bifunctional focusing metalenses have successfully implemented. Abstract:<p>Metasurfaces, as novel ultrathin planar optical elements, have become a fascinating avenue to modulate one or more optical characteristics including phase, amplitude, and polarization. Especially in multi-functional applications based on different polarization, the complexity and ponderosity of current systems could be avoided by replacing the original components with metasurfaces. In this report, based on interleaving different nanostructures, a design strategy is proposed to associate the target polarization and independent phase modulation with parameters of nanofins. According to the new strategy, a multi-functional metasurface can be constructed in which each channel has an independent function and polarization. To demonstrate our strategy, several arbitrary polarization multi-focus metalenses are simulated using two to five foci, including linear, circular, and elliptical polarization. Due to independence between the phase and polarization, different functions, such as different vortex phases, are also realized using single metasurface. Furthermore, the intensity ratio among the foci can be modified by modulating the numbers of different nanofins. The proposed meta-devices can improve many practical applications such as polarization imaging, optical communication, and holographic displays.</p>

Abstract:Optical filters have aroused tremendous excitement in advanced photonic instruments and modern digital displays due to their flexible capability of spectrum manipulation. Plasmonic metasurfaces of narrow bandwidth, high spectral contrast and robust structure tolerance are highly desired for optical filtration (especially in the visible regime) but rather challenging as large spectral broadening from intrinsic ohmic loss and design/fabrication deviations. Here we demonstrate the high‐performing sodium‐based metasurfaces for optical filtration across 450 to 750 nm by unique structure design of spatially decoupled concave surfaces and precise fabrication through templated solidification of liquid metals. Thanks to the distinct suppression of metallic loss as well as fabrication tolerance of interfacial structures, the as‐prepared concave metasurfaces enable a minimum linewidth of ∼ 15 nm, a maximal optical contrast of ∼ 93% and a high measure‐to‐design spectral match ratio ∼ 1500. These results have for the first time pushed the operation wavelengths of sodium‐based plasmonic devices from infrared to visible which in turn demonstrates the capability of filling the blank of commercial dielectric optical filters thus far.
