Abstract:Recently, the world faces a serious crisis due to water scarcity and global warming gases. Therefore, in this study, practical and structural sustainable solutions are presented by improving the performance of a reverse osmosis desalination unit (economic and carbon-free technology) assumed to be powered by a nuclear power plant (carbon-free energy source). The targets are to provide the best water quality at the lowest price, the longest RO unit components lifespan, and the lowest energy consumption rate. To achieve these aims, we used a sophisticated quality control approach called Six Sigma to Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process, integrated with a desalination economic evaluation model to understand the improvement finances and all costs of the Nuclear/RO unit. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and SIPOC diagrams are usually used as stand-alone methods, but in this study, they are merged into the Define Phase of DMAIC to strengthen its results. Minitab software is used to provide the statistical calculations of the process capability analysis and Design of Experiment (DOE) in the DMAIC. Also, a RO unit simulator (TORAY DS2) is used to validate the process recommended specs resulting from Six sigma. This Study shows novel integrations of methodology/software/technology to face the challenges of green technologies and water sustainability supported by a tested and solid performance data visualization analysis and continuous improvement strategies.
