Abstract:This paper discusses the performance and characteristics of desalination membranes used in treatment of water for potable use. In this study, The Desalination Economic Evaluation Program (DEEP) is a spreadsheet tool originally developed for the IAEA by General Atomics and later expanded in scope by the IAEA, The DEEP-5.1 version program allows designers and decision makers to compare performance and cost estimates of various desalination and power configurations. Desalination options modeled include MSF, MED, VC,RO and hybrid systems. This paper presents the results of the operational performance of RO units in experimental scale. The rate of decline of productivity for a period 38 Days is examined and described by simple power law function. The evaluation of the solvent and salt permeability coefficients with the time of operation is quantified. The results show the recovery, pressure and conductivity across the membrane for 38 days test run. Also, the results show the effect of chemical additives and operational parameters on the performance of the membrane during the cleaning. Based on such individual RO module data (one year) the product flow rate and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) performance is calculated and RO module replacement ratio can be estimated. These developments can be utilized to improve the quality of surface seawater feed to the level comparable to, or better than the water quality from the well water sources. These new developments enable a more advanced RO system design which should result in increased reliability and lower water cost. And compare the result of reverse osmosis desalination conventional system with a mathematical model is built and solved with ROSA computer programs to get results for the design calculations of the reverse osmosis mode used to remove salt from the feed water. The principles of the reverse osmosis mode, the conditions and factors affecting their operation, are discussed. The number of stages with their arrangements in the reverse osmosis mode is calculated using the ROSA Program. A mathematical model and computer programs including all the mentioned cases are built and applied on the reverse osmosis mode of water stations. The results of these calculations are compared with the practical results and showed a fair good agreement.

Abstract:Batch RO is designed to achieve high energy efficiency and high recovery in desalination. However, so far relatively few experiments on batch RO have been reported. Here we present an extensive experimental study of a single-acting, free-piston batch RO system using an 8-inch spiral wound membrane. The system was tested in the laboratory with brackish feed water containing up to 5 g/L NaCl. The objective was to quantify system performance in terms of Specific Energy Consumption (SEC), recovery, rejection, and output. Sensitivity to permeate flux and recirculation flow rate was also investigated. Performance was compared against the predictions of a theoretical model that accounts for salt retention, concentration polarization, and longitudinal concentration gradient in the RO module. For the first time, osmotic backflow was measured and incorporated into the model. For feed concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 g/L and recovery of 0.8, hydraulic SEC was measured in the range 0.22–0.48 kWh/m3 and electrical SEC in the range 0.48–0.83 kWh/m3. With improvements to the membrane permeability from 4.4 to 8 LMH/bar, selection of more efficient pumps, and reduction of valve friction losses, the model predicts that hydraulic SEC will be lowered to 0.14–0.39 kWh/m3.

Abstract:In this work, the performance of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) process using different types of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes is evaluated for brackish water desalination for producing irrigation-grade water. The proposed desalination system is a single-stage system, where three types of RO and two NF membranes were examined. The different desalination systems were simulated using ROSA72 software. In order to validate the theoretical model, the results obtained from the simulation were compared to those obtained from the experiment conducted in this work. The El-Moghra aquifer of Egypt is considered the test bed due to a considerable amount of data being available for this aquifer. The El-Moghra aquifer has 79 wells, and the available water data, when checked against several quality parameters, show that none of the investigated wells are suitable for direct irrigation without treatment due to problems of salinity, the sodium adsorption ratio, and low water quality according to the irrigation water quality index values. The obtained results show that nanofiltration membranes exhibited superior energy efficiency compared to reverse osmosis membranes. However, what sets the nanofiltration membranes apart is their ability to elevate water quality in 89.9% of the total investigated wells to an acceptable level for agricultural purposes. This underscores the nanofiltration membranes as a highly effective alternative to reverse osmosis membranes, demonstrating the capability to produce water suitable for irrigation while concurrently reducing operational costs due to the lower energy consumption in nanofiltration-based systems.

Abstract:Batch RO is a concept for achieving the minimum possible energy consumption in desalination, even at high recoveries. We present a batch RO design that operates cyclically in two alternating phases. The system uses a free piston, housed in a pressure vessel, to transfer pressure from the feed fluid to the recirculating fluid. No complete design procedure for this configuration currently exists. To fill this gap, we present a systematic model based on justified assumptions. The specific energy consumption (SEC) is broken down into contributions from the feed pump, recirculating pump, and auxiliary loads. The calculation of feed pump SEC includes three non-ideal correction factors: concentration polarisation, longitudinal concentration gradient, and salt retention. The model requires only the solution of explicit algebraic equations, without need of specialised numerical techniques, and is implemented in a simple 3-step procedure. The model is applied to an example involving desalination of brackish water using an 8-inch spiral-wound RO module. The design parameters are explored and optimised in a sensitivity analysis. The results show that the optimised batch RO at 80% recovery can produce fresh water with low-energy consumption, achieving 2nd law efficiency of 33.2% compared to 10–15% for conventional brackish water RO.

Abstract:The desalination of seawater and brackish water has becomes an increasingly important as well as effective process against the shortage of freshwater resources in the whole world, especially in the Saharan and the MENA regions, this shortage of freshwater resources is the result of increasing global warming and climate change that are constantly rising the salinity level of the seawaters along with reducing the availability of existing freshwater. The membrane desalination process has a high technological development, including reverse osmosis membranes (RO), which represents a new sustainable water resource implementation. Indeed, studying the performance of the reverse osmosis membrane, which is the objective of this work, is very important, based on a small capacity membrane desalination pilot, to discover the effects of physicochemical properties on the productive mode of reverse osmosis, as well as the mode of energy consumption of the system, which is still intensive energy.

Abstract:Efforts to improve the performance of RO desalination include new membranes and new system configurations. Batch RO is an innovative configuration which helps to minimize Specific Energy Consumption ( SEC ) at high recovery. However, there is a lack of experimental studies regarding the performance of different membranes in batch RO. In this study, we tested four 8-in. RO membranes of different permeabilities in a free-piston batch RO system to assess how membrane properties affect performance. Tests were conducted with brackish feed water containing 1000–5000 mg/L of NaCl, at recovery of 0.8. Performance in terms of SEC , permeate quality and salt rejection was quantified. SEC and salt rejection varied considerably from low-permeability to high-permeability membranes. For the lowest permeability membrane rejection was >95 %, whereas for the higher permeability membranes it was only 82–96 %. SEC with high-permeability membranes was approximately 25–29 % lower than with the lowest permeability membrane. Using a verified model, we predict that on increasing the permeability from 5 to 20 L/m 2 /h/bar, hydraulic SEC would go down further by 17–28 % using ultra high-permeability membranes. Though this study shows the potential for SEC reduction, it also underlines the limitations of current commercial membranes and therefore the need for membranes with even higher permeability.

Abstract:The reverse osmosis method has developed extremely rapidly in recent years and has become the most competitive seawater desalination technology in the world, and it has been widely used in all aspects. Large-scale reverse osmosis desalination plants cannot provide fresh water resources in areas with insufficient water resources and limited space. Therefore, this paper proposes a research plan for a small seawater desalination device based on reverse osmosis, which is mainly suitable for handling emergencies, disaster relief, desert areas and outdoor activities and other needs for timely freshwater resources. It mainly includes pretreatment modules, a reaction infiltration module, a post-processing module and an energy supply module. Detailed design calculations are carried out for the small-scale reverse osmosis membrane system, including the selection and quantity and arrangement of membranes. Subsequently, the one-stage two-stage small-scale reverse osmosis membrane system was modeled, and its energy consumption was analyzed theoretically from the perspectives of specific energy consumption and energy utilization efficiency; the main influencing factors were clarified, and the optimal recovery rate for system operation was determined to be 20%–30%. Finally, an experimental prototype was built to conduct relevant experiments to determine the influence trend of pressure, temperature, concentration, and flow rate on the operating performance of the reverse osmosis system.

Abstract:The success of a desalination brine valorisation process heavily depends on the effectiveness of the pre-treatment stage, which purifies the brine by reducing the concentration of ions that could form insoluble compounds and hinder system performance. This study focused on testing an innovative nanofiltration (NF) pilot plant operating with 144 m 3 /d of actual brine from an upstream seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) pilot plant located in the Canary Islands (North Atlantic Ocean). The NF membranes tested (NE8040-40) played a critical role, demonstrating exceptional rejection rates for divalent ions, therefore also increasing their concentration in the divalent-rich stream, setting the stage for future valorisation of the related by-products. Simultaneously, these NF membranes allowed the achievement of a high-purity monovalent-rich stream with Na + and Cl – concentrations reaching approximately 98 %, potentially enabling the generation of valuable commercial products in subsequent stages. The NF system was thoroughly assessed under different conditions of flow, pressure, and recovery rates, incorporating extensive process monitoring with comprehensive sensor data.

Abstract:Practical modeling for assessing the efficiency of a full-scale reverse osmosis (RO) system may be a challenging task. This is because the operating conditions of RO systems can change significantly in actual practice owing to high seasonal variations and different progress of membrane fouling during long-term filtration. Accordingly, it is difficult to reliably model the RO performance if such conditions are excluded. In this study, we model a full-scale installation of a RO membrane system, considering actual operations of the industrial water treatment plant. A numerical model is built to describe spatiotemporal behavior of (water, salt, and foulant) mass transport inside a full-dimension pressure vessel. By performing a global sensitivity analysis, we evaluate the relative importance of key influential factors on model accuracy and specific energy consumption (SEC). The model and its parameters are optimized based on the sensitivity result and validated using best-fitted time-series measurement data of 3875 h. The results demonstrate the practical behaviors of fouling development and separation performance of the primary RO process. A regression tree analysis of SEC for 27 different operational scenarios in simulations may benefit decision making for energy efficient RO. Results reveal the high dependence of SEC on cleaning frequency in the feed temperature range.

Abstract:Abstract Today, the world is facing difficult challenges related to water scarcity and freshwater resources. Water desalination has become necessary to meet this great demand. The reverse osmosis desalination system is considered the dominant type of desalination, although the high amount of energy consumed is considered the main barrier to expanding seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO). The need for producing an environmentally friendly energy source is also one of the most important challenges in preserving the environment and reducing global warming. The coexistence of power plants that release waste heat energy through the condenser and reverse osmosis plant represents an opportunity for a synergy system. Therefore, research has shown that the low/ultralow grade heat from natural sources or industrial processes can assist the process of desalination. This paper reviews available process configurations, system design, and operating parameters, and discusses the performance of the RO process at high temperatures.

Abstract:Free-piston batch RO achieves excellent energy efficiency at high recovery, but current systems have outputs <25 m 3 /day. Designing larger systems poses challenges like designing an appropriate work exchanger and optimizing membrane arrangements in series and/or parallel. This study calibrates a batch RO model against brackish and seawater experiments up to 112 bar and uses the model to predict performance on scale-up. Modelling up to 6 membranes in series predicts SEC of 1.11–1.5 kWh/m 3 at recirculation flow Q r / Q f = 4 with brackish water, with SEC becoming more sensitive to Q r / Q f as the number of membranes increases. Using a 500-L work exchanger, a batch RO system with twelve 8-in. membranes is designed. For brackish water (3000 mg/L) this system gives outputs of 165 and 128 m 3 /day with SEC of 0.69 and 1.19 kWh/m 3 at recoveries of 0.93–0.97 with low- and high-pressure RO membranes, respectively - representing SEC reductions of 33 and 45 % compared to semi-batch RO. For seawater, it gives 105 m 3 /day with SEC of 2.37 kWh/m 3 at recovery of 0.66. High-permeability membranes would significantly enhance batch RO performance; for example, increasing permeability from 0.8 to 2 L/m 2 /h/bar would boost output to 320 and 207 m 3 /day in brackish and seawater desalination respectively.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis membrane technology has developed over the past 40 years to a 44% share in world desalting production capacity, and an 80% share in the total number of desalination plants installed worldwide. The use of membrane desalination has increased as materials have improved and costs have decreased. Today, reverse osmosis membranes are the leading technology for new desalination installations, and they are applied to a variety of salt water resources using tailored pretreatment and membrane system design. Two distinct branches of reverse osmosis desalination have emerged: seawater reverse osmosis and brackish water reverse osmosis. Differences between the two water sources, including foulants, salinity, waste brine (concentrate) disposal options, and plant location, have created significant differences in process development, implementation, and key technical problems. Pretreatment options are similar for both types of reverse osmosis and depend on the specific components of the water source. Both brackish water and seawater reverse osmosis (RO) will continue to be used worldwide; new technology in energy recovery and renewable energy, as well as innovative plant design, will allow greater use of desalination for inland and rural communities, while providing more affordable water for large coastal cities. A wide variety of research and general information on RO desalination is available; however, a direct comparison of seawater and brackish water RO systems is necessary to highlight similarities and differences in process development. This article brings to light key parameters of an RO process and process modifications due to feed water characteristics.

Abstract:In the present work, a type of marine reverse osmosis desalination plant with 20t/d product operated at different condition (temperature, operation pressure, TDS) was studied. Within the different operation conditions, the TDS and flow rate of permeate change in relation to the operation pressure, temperature and TDS of seawater. The study shows that when the TDS of seawater is higher than 40000ppm or when the temperature of seawater is higher than 35°C, the TDS of permeate is higher than 500ppm and as such the permeate is not suitable for drinking. To satisfy the drinking water supply, two-level reverse osmosis or refrigerator for cooling the inlet water were suggested.

Abstract:The reverse osmosis membrane module is an integral element of a desalination system as it determines the overall performance of the desalination plant. The fraction of clean water that can be recovered via this process is often limited by salt precipitation which plays a critical role in its sustainability. In this work, we present a model to study the complex interplay between flow, transport and precipitation processes in reverse osmosis membranes, which together influence recovery and in turn process sustainability. A reactive porous interface model describes the membrane with a dynamic evolving porosity and permeability to capture the scaling and clogging of the membrane. An open-source finite-volume numerical solver is implemented within the OpenFOAM library and numerical tests are presented here showing the effect of the various parameters of the model and the robustness of the model to describe a wide range of operating conditions.

Abstract:The increasing drinking water demand in many countries leads to an increase in the use of desalination plants, which are considered a great solution for water treatment processes. Reverse osmosis (RO) and electro-dialysis (ED) systems are the most popular membrane processes used to desalinate water at high salinity. Both systems work by separating the ionic contaminates and disposing of them as a brine solution, but ED uses electrical current as a driving force while RO uses osmotic pressure. A direct comparison of reverse osmosis and electro-dialysis systems is needed to highlight process development similarities and variances. This work aims to provide an overview of previous studies on reverse osmosis and electro-dialysis systems related to membrane module and design processes; energy consumption; cost analysis; operational problems; efficiency of saline removal; and environmental impacts of brine disposal. RO system uses osmotic pressure as a driving force to force water through the membrane with less energy than other desalination systems. The enhancements in membrane materials and power recovery of the unit have massively decreased the price of RO units. ED system uses an electrical current to push dissolved ions across ion exchange membranes. The results of this review showed that desalination plants must be integrated with renewable energy to reduce power consumption and costs related to energy. Various technologies, including treatment processes and disposal methods, must be used to control concentrated solutions resulting from desalination processes because 5 to 33% of the total cost of the desalination process is associated with brine disposal.

Abstract:A process simulation for high‐pressure reverse osmosis (HPRO) is presented. The effect of different operating parameters on the brine treatment is examined. The HPRO process can treat hyper‐saline solutions of up to 120 000 mg/L TDS. The energy consumption varies from 3.65 to 5.11 kWh/m3. HPRO is more energy‐efficient compared to other brine treatment technologies. Summary Reverse osmosis (RO) is nowadays considered to be the most dominant desalination technology. Nonetheless, due to osmotic pressure constraints, conventional RO cannot desalinate brine effluents (>70 g/L of total dissolved solids [TDS]). Thus, high‐pressure RO (HPRO), that is, RO operating at a pressure of more than 82 bar, has recently attracted the interest of the water and wastewater industry. To this aim, a process simulation for the HPRO process was implemented and several sensitivity analyses were conducted for the first time. The results showed that by increasing the recovery rate by 0.05, energy consumption decreased by 3.5%. An increase in the feed brine temperature from 5°C to 30°C increases the permeate flow rate (up to 0.929 m3/h), the permeate concentration (up to 468 mg/L TDS), and the recovery rate (up to 0.435). A 10‐bar pressure increases the permeate flow by approximately 9.8% and decreases the permeate concentration by approximately 6 mg/L TDS. Moreover, the use of an energy recovery device significantly reduces energy consumption by 26% (from 4.93‐5.10 to 3.65‐3.78 kWh/m3). Overall, HPRO is a promising technology for brine treatment and valorization in zero liquid discharge and minimal liquid discharge systems.

Abstract:In recent years, reverse osmosis water desalination has developed rapidly and has become the most competitive and widely used technology in the world. The number of desalination plants is increasing rapidly as freshwater needs increase. Various membrane technologies have been developed and improved, including nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), whose desalination costs have been relatively reduced. Therefore, this work proposes an experimental study for a small desalination unit based on RO generated by renewable energy, which is mainly suitable for arid regions or desert areas that do not have electricity and water and can be applied for emergency treatment to meet strong freshwater resource needs. In this study, to meet the drinking water demand, a reverse osmosis desalination system is designed and evaluated in order to improve and optimize its operation. This system has a daily capacity of 2 m3. We used brackish groundwater, which has been characterized as reference water, to produce synthetic water for different salinities until seawater. The analysis is based on data obtained from experiments carried out in the standalone RO pilot designed for the production of fresh water. For this purpose, we conducted relevant experiments to examine the influence of applied pressure, salt concentration and temperature on the RO membrane performance. The effects of different factors that affect the energy consumption in the RO desalination process were analyzed, and those with significant influence were explored. The effectiveness of RO desalination coupled with a photovoltaic (PV) energy system is shown. We found the recovery rate for system operation to be 32%. An optimization study is presented for the operation of an autonomous RO desalination system powered by photovoltaic panels. The energy produced by the PV system was used to feed two pumps forthe production of drinking waterwithanRO membrane, under the conditions of the town of Bou-Ismail. As results, a 3 kWp PV system was installed based on the energy demand. The design data have shown that a 3 kWp PV system can power a 1.8 W RO load given the Bou-Ismail climate. Energy consumption in the case study under Bou-Ismail weather conditions were analyzed. The desalination of brackish water at a TDS value of 5 g/L requires an energy of about 1.5 kWh/m3. Using seawater at a TDS value of 35 g/L, this value increases to 5.6 kWh/m3. The results showed that the optimal recovery rate for system operation was determined to be 32% for a feedwater salinity of 35 g/L, and 80% for a feedwater salinity of 1 g/L.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) technology requires high energy input in order to extract freshwater from seawater. Improvements in RO technology have led to seawater RO (SWRO) becoming the dominant form of large scale desalination around the world. However, the specific energy consumption (SEC) of SWRO remains substantially higher than that for surface water treatment and indirect potable recycling, making SWRO less cost effective than other alternatives for producing potable water. Furthermore, where non-renewable energy sources are used to supply SWRO energy demand, higher levels of greenhouse gas are emitted compared with lower energy alternatives. The purpose of this paper is to review the RO process configurations currently available and their impact on reducing SWRO energy consumption. This paper highlights the main factors contributing to SWRO energy consumption and presents some of the commonly adopted approaches to reducing SEC in SWRO plants. The use of energy recovery devices (ERDs) in SWRO is explored and the relative effectiveness of the various types of ERDs in reducing SEC presented.

Abstract:This study focuses on improving the operation of reverse osmosis (RO) with Pelton turbine in different circumstances. In the integrated RO system, the Pelton Turbine is used instead of a PX due to its significantly lower cost. The RO system is studied at different pressures ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 bar. Additionally, the influence of feed water TDS and temperature on the RO permeate and retentate was also studied. The experimental results showed that increasing the RO pressure led to an increase in the permeate flow rate. The permeate was heightened by approximately 72% once the pressure was increased from 6.5 to 8.5 bar. However, it was observed that increasing the pressure by 30% resulted in a significant decline in turbine power, which decreased by approximately 71.8%. Furthermore, the study found that raising the salinity led to an increase in RO permeate TDS, while increasing the feed water temperature resulted in a decline in productivity TDS. To control the high-pressure pump and supply emergency loads, an Arduino program circuit was used, providing a convenient and flexible way to manage the system. The theoretical modeling developed in the study was found to be in better agreement with the real findings, with a deviance of 3.51%. This indicates the accuracy and reliability of the model in predicting the operation of the integrated RO unit. Finally, the cost of the produced water was 0.26 $/m 3 .

Abstract:Rapid field evaluation of RO feed filtration requirements, selection of effective antiscalant type and dose, and estimation of suitable scale-free RO recovery level were demonstrated using a novel approach based on direct observation of mineral scaling and flux decline measurements, utilizing an automated Membrane Monitor (MeMo). The MeMo, operated in a stand-alone single-pass desalting mode, enabled rapid assessment of the adequacy of feed filtration by enabling direct observation of particulate deposition on the membrane surface. The diagnostic field study with RO feed water of high mineral scaling propensity revealed (via direct MeMo observation) that suspended particulates (even for feed water of turbidity <1 NTU) could serve as seeds for promoting surface crystal nucleation. With feed filtration optimized, a suitable maximum RO water recovery, with complete mineral scale suppression facilitated by an effective antiscalant dose, can be systematically and directly identified (via MeMo) in the field for a given feed water quality. Scale-free operating conditions, determined via standalone MeMo rapid diagnostic tests, were shown to be applicable to spiral-would RO system as validated via both flux decline measurements and ex-situ RO plant membrane scale monitoring. It was shown that the present approach is suitable for rapid field assessment of RO operability and it is particularly advantageous when evaluating water sources of composition that may vary both temporally and across the regions of interest.
