Abstract:Spring phenology of temperate ecosystems is highly sensitive to climate change, generating various impacts on many important terrestrial surface biophysical processes. Although various prognostic models relying on environmental variables of temperature and photoperiod have been developed for spring phenology, comprehensive ecosystem-scale evaluations over large landscapes and long-time periods remain lacking. Further, environmental variables other than temperature and photoperiod might also importantly constrain spring phenology modelling but remain under-investigation. To address these issues, we leveraged around 20-years datasets of environmental variables (from Daymet and GLDAS products) and the spring phenology metric (i.e., the greenup date) respectively derived from MODIS and PhenoCams across 108 sites in the Northern and Eastern United States. We firstly cross-compared MODIS-derived greenup date with official PhenoCams product with high accuracy ( R 2 = 0.70). Then, we evaluated the three prognostic models (i.e., Growing Degree Date (GDD), Sequential (SEQ) and optimality-based (OPT)) with MODIS-derived spring phenology, assessed the model residuals and their associations with soil moisture, rainfall, and solar radiation, and revised the two photoperiod-relevant models (SEQ, OPT) by replacing the daylength variable with solar radiation, which was found to contribute the most to model residuals. We found that 1) all models demonstrated good capability in characterizing spring phenology, with OPT performing the best (RMSE = 8.04 ± 5.05 days), followed by SEQ (RMSE = 10.57 ± 7.77 days) and GDD (RMSE = 10.84 ± 8.42 days), 2) all models displayed high model residuals showing tight correlation with solar radiation ( r = 0.45–0.75), and 3) the revised models that included solar radiation significantly performed better with an RMSE reduction by 22.08%. Such results are likely because solar radiation better constrains early growing season plant photosynthesis than photoperiod, supporting the hypothesis of spring phenology as an adaptive strategy to maximize photosynthetic carbon gain (approximated by solar radiation) while minimizing frost damage risk (captured by temperature). Collectively, our study reveals the underappreciated importance of solar radiation in constraining spring phenology of temperate ecosystems, and suggests ways to improve spring phenology modelling and other phenology-related ecological processes.

Abstract:Phenology, by controlling the seasonal activity of vegetation on the land surface, plays a fundamental role in regulating photosynthesis and other ecosystem processes, as well as competitive interactions and feedbacks to the climate system. We conducted an analysis to evaluate the representation of phenology, and the associated seasonality of ecosystem‐scale CO2 exchange, in 14 models participating in the North American Carbon Program Site Synthesis. Model predictions were evaluated using long‐term measurements (emphasizing the period 2000–2006) from 10 forested sites within the AmeriFlux and Fluxnet‐Canada networks. In deciduous forests, almost all models consistently predicted that the growing season started earlier, and ended later, than was actually observed; biases of 2 weeks or more were typical. For these sites, most models were also unable to explain more than a small fraction of the observed interannual variability in phenological transition dates. Finally, for deciduous forests, misrepresentation of the seasonal cycle resulted in over‐prediction of gross ecosystem photosynthesis by +160 ± 145 g C m−2 yr−1 during the spring transition period and +75 ± 130 g C m−2 yr−1 during the autumn transition period (13% and 8% annual productivity, respectively) compensating for the tendency of most models to under‐predict the magnitude of peak summertime photosynthetic rates. Models did a better job of predicting the seasonality of CO2 exchange for evergreen forests. These results highlight the need for improved understanding of the environmental controls on vegetation phenology and incorporation of this knowledge into better phenological models. Existing models are unlikely to predict future responses of phenology to climate change accurately and therefore will misrepresent the seasonality and interannual variability of key biosphere–atmosphere feedbacks and interactions in coupled global climate models.

Abstract:Aims Revealing occurrence mechanisms of autumn phenology in temperate deciduous trees is of vital importance for improving estimation accuracies of ecosystem carbon sequestration and vegetation productivity.This study aimed to uncover the mechanisms of leaf senescence in response to environmental changes and simulation accuracies of autumn phenology through process-based models, and further investigate impacts of water conditions on leaf senescence mechanisms and simulation accuracy of autumn phenology.Methods We used the low temperature and photoperiod multiplicative model (TPM) to fit the first leaf coloration dates and leaf fall end dates of six tree species at more than 90 stations across the temperate zone of northern China from 1981 to 2014.The TPM contains two sub-models, i.e., photoperiod-initiated leaf senescence model (TPM p ) and temperature-initiated leaf senescence model.We evaluated simulation accuracies and their spatiotemporal variations of station-species specific optimum models, and analyzed regional differentiation of proportions of two sub-models among optimum models and its spatial dependence on arid-humid gradient.Important findings (1) Photoperiod shortening plays more important roles in initiating leaf senescence than temperature decrease.The simulated average root mean square errors of optimum models for first leaf coloration and leaf fall end dates are 6.9 d and 6.0 d, respectively.Proportions of significantly positive correlations between simulated and observed time series are 71.4% (first leaf coloration) and 83.6% (leaf fall end), respectively.(2) Simulated regional mean absolute errors and multi-year mean absolute errors of optimum models for first leaf coloration date and leaf fall end date are less than 2.4 d.However, amplitudes of temporal and spatial variations in

Abstract:Vegetation phenology strongly controls photosynthetic activity and ecosystem function and is essential for monitoring the response of vegetation to climate change and variability. Terrestrial ecosystem models require robust phenology models to understand and simulate the relationship between ecosystems and a changing climate. While current phenology models are able to capture inter-annual variation in the timing of vegetation spring onset, their spatiotemporal performances are not well understood. Using green-up dates derived from MODIS, we test 9 phenological models that predict the timing of grassland spring onset via commonly available climatological variables. Model evaluation using satellite observations suggests that Modified Growing-Degree Day (MGDD) models and Accumulated Growing Season Index (AGSI) models achieve reasonable accuracy (RMSE<20days) after model calibration. Inclusion of a photoperiod trigger and varied critical forcing thresholds in the temperature-based phenology model improves model applicability at a regional scale. In addition, we observe that AGSI models outperform MGDD models by capturing inter-annual phenology variation in large semi-arid areas, likely due to the explicit consideration of water availability. Further validation based on flux tower sites shows good agreement between the modeled timing of spring onset and references derived from satellite observations and in-situ measurements. Our results confirm recent studies and indicate that there is a need to calibrate current phenology models to predict grassland spring onsets accurately across space and time. We demonstrate the feasibility of combining satellite observations and climatic datasets to develop and refine phenology models for characterizing the spatiotemporal patterns of grassland green-up variations.

Abstract:Phenological events, such as bud burst, are strongly linked to ecosystem processes in temperate deciduous forests. However, the exact nature and magnitude of how seasonal and interannual variation in air temperatures influence phenology is poorly understood, and model-based phenology representations fail to capture local- to regional-scale variability arising from differences in species composition. In this paper, we use a combination of surface meteorological data, species composition maps, remote sensing, and ground-based observations to estimate models that better represent how community-level species composition affects the phenological response of deciduous broadleaf forests to climate forcing at spatial scales that are typically used in ecosystem models. Using time series of canopy greenness from repeat digital photography, citizen science data from the USA National Phenology Network, and satellite remote sensing-based observations of phenology, we estimated and tested models that predict the timing of spring leaf emergence across five different deciduous broadleaf forest types in the eastern United States. Specifically, we evaluated two different approaches: (i) using species-specific models in combination with species composition information to 'upscale' model predictions and (ii) using repeat digital photography of forest canopies that observe and integrate the phenological behavior of multiple representative species at each camera site to calibrate a single model for all deciduous broadleaf forests. Our results demonstrate variability in cumulative forcing requirements and photoperiod cues across species and forest types, and show how community composition influences phenological dynamics over large areas. At the same time, the response of different species to spatial and interannual variation in weather is, under the current climate regime, sufficiently similar that the generic deciduous forest model based on repeat digital photography performed comparably to the upscaled species-specific models. More generally, results from this analysis demonstrate how in situ observation networks and remote sensing data can be used to synergistically calibrate and assess regional parameterizations of phenology in models.

Abstract:Current process-based models of autumn phenophases are generally based on autumn temperature and/or photoperiod cues. The dependence of autumn phenology on environmental conditions occurring throughout the leafy season has been overlooked. In this study, we incorporated the effect of leafy season temperature and precipitation in process-based models with the aim to improve the modelling of autumn phenology. We tested the ability of three existing and three new autumn phenology models in predicting the occurrence of leaf coloration of four deciduous tree species during 1981-2012 across temperate China. The results show that the models taking the effects of both the leafy season temperature and low precipitation into account performed best over both calibration and validation data. Compared with existing autumn phenological models, the best models predict that the potential delay of autumn phenology in a warmer world is modulated by the impact of leafy season climate on leaf senescence in a complex way: increased leafy season temperature tends to hasten the occurrence of leaf coloration while low leafy season precipitation tends to delay it. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis of a local adaptation of tree phenology through the evaluation of site-specific model parameterizations. Local fittings of the critical temperature sums in all models did not improve the model ability to simulate the occurrence of leaf coloration, which suggests either that local adaptation of leaf senescence process is virtually non-existent across the populations considered or that the genetic variation of leaf coloration traits among populations cannot be detected by our models. Our findings highlighted the importance of leafy season climate in autumn phenology modelling and its possible offset effect in the response of autumn senescence to future warming.
Daily minimum temperature and precipitation control on spring phenology in arid‐mountain ecosystems in China

Abstract:Climate anomaly has caused substantial shifts in phenology of mountain ecosystems, but the underlying mechanism of phenological responses to climate change is still not well understood. In essence, the abundance of vegetation communities increases the complexity of phenology‐climate relationships, leading to a certain limitation in predictions of future dynamics among different vegetation types using a unified model. In this study, we focused on the climatic constraints on spring phenology in arid mountains (AMs) of China, and emphasis was laid on accurate representation of mechanisms that control phenology across different vegetation types. We Firstly explored spatiotemporal variations in satellite‐derived estimates of starting date of vegetation growing season (SOS) over the period 2000–2015 using Moderate‐resolution Imaging Spectro‐radiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Phenological models in response to climate variability were then established by using mixed‐effect models based on satellite observations and an extensive dataset of climatic measurements. Our results showed that the climatic regulation on SOS varied greatly over vegetation types. More climatic factors that regulate phenological development were found in grassland than forest and shrubland. At ecosystem level, two critical climate factors, daily minimum temperature (Tmin) and precipitation, explained 74 to 95% of total variability in predicted SOS. The observed sensitivity to Tmin is expected to be closely linked with the risk of frost damage, while preseason precipitation determines water availability in spring. The varying ecosystem sensitivity revealed the different resilience and adaptability to changing climate among vegetation types, which have been linked to their eco‐physiological characteristics (e.g., water use efficiency; Reed et al., 2018) and environmental conditions (e.g., elevation). Overall, our results indicate a strong dependence of spring phenology on Tmin and precipitation, and create an opportunity for a more realistic representation of vegetation phenology and growth of AM plants in China in land surface models.This article is protected by copyright. Simulating the Onset of Spring Vegetation Growth Across the Northern Hemisphere

Abstract:Changes in the spring onset of vegetation growth in response to climate change can profoundly impact climate-biosphere interactions. Thus, robust simulation of spring onset is essential to accurately predict ecosystem responses and feedback to ongoing climate change. To date, the ability of vegetation phenology models to reproduce spatiotemporal patterns of spring onset at larger scales has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we took advantage of phenology observations via remote sensing to calibrate and evaluated six models, including both one-phase (considering only forcing temperatures) and two-phase (involving forcing, chilling, and photoperiod) models across the Northern Hemisphere between 1982 and 2012. Overall, we found that the model that integrated the photoperiod effect performed best at capturing spatiotemporal patterns of spring phenology in boreal and temperate forests. By contrast, all of the models performed poorly in simulating the onset of growth in grasslands. These results suggest that the photoperiod plays a role in controlling the onset of growth in most Northern Hemisphere forests, whereas other environmental factors (e.g., precipitation) should be considered when simulating the onset of growth in grasslands. We also found that the one-phase model performed as well as the two-phase models in boreal forests, which implies that the chilling requirement is probably fulfilled across most of the boreal zone. Conversely, two-phase models performed better in temperate forests than the one-phase model, suggesting that photoperiod and chilling play important roles in these temperate forests. Our results highlight the significance of including chilling and photoperiod effects in models of the spring onset of forest growth at large scales, and indicate that the consideration of additional drivers may be required for grasslands.
Emerging opportunities and challenges in phenology: a review

Abstract:Plant phenology research has gained increasing attention because of the sensitivity of phenology to climate change and its consequences for ecosystem function. Recent technological development has made it possible to gather invaluable data at a variety of spatial and ecological scales. Despite our ability to observe phenological change at multiple scales, the mechanistic basis of phenology is still not well understood. Integration of multiple disciplines, including ecology, evolutionary biology, climate science, and remote sensing, with long-term monitoring data across multiple spatial scales is needed to advance understanding of phenology. We review the mechanisms and major drivers of plant phenology, including temperature, photoperiod, and winter chilling, as well as other factors such as competition, resource limitation, and genetics. Shifts in plant phenology have significant consequences on ecosystem productivity, carbon cycling, competition, food webs, and other ecosystem functions and services. We summarize recent advances in observation techniques across multiple spatial scales, including digital repeat photography, other complementary optical measurements, and solar-induced fluorescence, to assess our capability to address the importance of these scale-dependent drivers. Then, we review phenology models as an important component of earth system modeling. We find that the lack of species-level knowledge and observation data leads to difficulties in the development of vegetation phenology models at ecosystem or community scales. Finally, we recommend further research to advance understanding of the mechanisms governing phenology and the standardization of phenology observation methods across networks. With the opportunity for "big data" collection for plant phenology, we envision a breakthrough in process-based phenology modeling.
Evaluation of key parameters controlling phenology-induced variability of surface fluxes in land surface models

Abstract:Over the past decades, land surface models have evolved into advanced tools which comprise detailed process descriptions and interactions at a broad range of scales. One of the challenges in these models is the accurate simulation of plant phenology. It is a key element at the nexus of the simulated hydrological and carbon cycle, where the leaf area index (LAI) plays a major role in flux partitioning, water balance and gross primary production.In this study, three well-established models are used to simulate the intrinsically coupled fluxes of water, energy and carbon from terrestrial vegetation. ORCHIDEE, ISBA-CC and the LSA-SAF algorithm each have a different approach to represent plant phenology. Whereas ISBA-CC has a fairly simple biomass allocation scheme to represent the phenological cycle, ORCHIDEE relies on a dedicated phenology module, and LSA-SAF is driven by remote-sensed forcing variables, such as LAI. Simulations were performed for a wide range of hydro-climatic biomes and plant functional types at field scale. The simulated fluxes were validated using eddy-covariance measurements, and the simulated phenology was compared to remote-sensed observations.These models are tools to extrapolate leaf-level processes to global scale climate predictions. The origin of the parameters controlling phenology-induced variability in these models ranges from plant-scale lab experiments to global-scale calibration. The aim of this study is to investigate the key parameters controlling phenology-induced variability in these models.
An observation-based progression modeling approach to spring and autumn deciduous tree phenology

Abstract:It is important to accurately determine the response of spring and autumn phenology to climate change in forest ecosystems, as phenological variations affect carbon balance, forest productivity, and biodiversity. We observed phenology intensively throughout spring and autumn in a temperate deciduous woodlot at Milwaukee, WI, USA, during 2007-2012. Twenty-four phenophase levels in spring and eight in autumn were recorded for 106 trees, including white ash, basswood, white oak, boxelder, red oak, and hophornbeam. Our phenological progression models revealed that accumulated degree-days and day length explained 87.9-93.4 % of the variation in spring canopy development and 75.8-89.1 % of the variation in autumn senescence. In addition, the timing of community-level spring and autumn phenophases and the length of the growing season from 1871 to 2012 were reconstructed with the models developed. All simulated spring phenophases significantly advanced at a rate from 0.24 to 0.48 days/decade (p ≤ 0.001) during the 1871-2012 period and from 1.58 to 2.00 days/decade (p < 0.02) during the 1970-2012 period; two simulated autumn phenophases were significantly delayed at a rate of 0.37 (mid-leaf coloration) and 0.50 (full-leaf coloration) days/decade (p < 0.01) during the 1970-2012 period. Consequently, the simulated growing season lengthened at a rate of 0.45 and 2.50 days/decade (p < =0.001), respectively, during the two periods. Our results further showed the variability of responses to climate between early and late spring phenophases, as well as between leaf coloration and leaf fall, and suggested accelerating simulated ecosystem responses to climate warming over the last four decades in comparison to the past 142 years.
Diverging models introduce large uncertainty in future climate warming impact on spring phenology of temperate deciduous trees

Abstract:<p>Spring phenology influences terrestrial ecosystem carbon, water and energy exchanges between the biosphere and atmosphere. Accurate prediction of spring phenology is therefore a prerequisite to foresee the impacts of climate warming on terrestrial ecosystems. In the present study, we studied the model performance of four widely used process-based models of spring leaf unfolding, including both a one-phase model (not considering a chilling phase: the Thermal Time model) and three two-phase models (all accounting for a required chilling period: the Parallel model, the Sequential model, the Unified model). Models were tested on five deciduous tree species occurring across Europe. We specifically investigated the divergence of their phenology predictions under future climate warming scenarios and studied the differences in the chilling periods. We found that, in general, the two-phase models performed slightly better than the one-phase model when fitting to the observed data, with all two-phase models performing similarly. However, leaf unfolding projections diverged substantially among the two-phase models over the period 2070-2100. Furthermore, we found that the modeled end dates of the chilling periods in these models also diverged, with advances for both the Sequential and Parallel models during the period 2070-2100 (compared to the period 1980-2010), and delays in the Unified model. These findings thus highlight large uncertainty in the two-phase phenology models and confirm that the mechanism underlying the leaf unfolding process is not yet understood. We therefore urgently need an improved understanding of the leaf unfolding process in order to improve the representation of phenology in terrestrial ecosystem models.</p>

Statistical Simulation Of Plant Phenology Temporal Variation

Abstract:To simulate temporal variation of plant phenology, daily mean air temperature-based temporal phenology models were constructed using Taraxacum mongolicum first leaf unfolding and common leaf coloration data at 52 stations within eastern China's temperate zone from 1990 to 2009, and Ulmus pumila first leaf unfolding and leaf fall end data at 46 stations across China's temperate zone from 1986 to 2005. Results show that the new model is more precise and rational in detecting responses of plant phenology to temperature than conventional monthly mean air temperature- based phenology models. Both T. mongolicum and U. pumila phenology shows a consistent response to temperatures at local and regional scales. Namely, first leaf unfolding date has a significantly negative response to spring temperature, while common leaf coloration and leaf fall end dates have a significantly positive response to autumn temperature. Moreover, a 1 degrees C increase in spring temperature may cause a larger advancement of first leaf unfolding date at warmer locations than at colder locations for both T. mongolicum and U. pumila, whereas a 1 degrees C increase in autumn temperature may induce a larger delay of leaf fall end date at warmer locations than at colder locations for U. pumila. Therefore, future regional climate warming may enhance sensitivity of plant phenological response to temperature, especially in the colder regions where the greatest climate warming is expected.
Weakened connection between spring leaf-out and autumn senescence in the Northern Hemisphere

Abstract:Vegetation autumn phenology is critical in regulating the ecosystem carbon cycle and regional climate. However, the dominant drivers of autumn senescence and their temporal shifts under climate change remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a multi-factor analysis considering both direct climatic controls and biological carryover effects from start-of-season (SOS) and seasonal peak vegetation activities on the end-of-season (EOS) to fill these knowledge gaps. Combining satellite and ground observations across the northern hemisphere, we found that carryover effects from early-to-peak vegetation activities exerted greater influence on EOS than the direct climatic controls on nearly half of the vegetated land. Unexpectedly, the carryover effects from SOS on EOS have significantly weakened over recent decades, accompanied by strengthened climatic controls. Such results indicate the weakened constraint of leaf longevity on senescence due to prolonged growing season in response to climate change. These findings underscore the important role of biological carryover effects in regulating vegetation autumn senescence under climate change, which should be incorporated into the formulation and enhancement of phenology modules utilized in land surface models.
Temperature-precipitation Background Affects Spatial Heterogeneity of Spring Phenology Responses to Climate Change in Northern Grasslands (30°N-55°N)

Abstract:Understanding spatial heterogeneity of grassland phenology responses to climate change is of crucial importance for revealing regional and species differences in ecosystem processes. In this study, three spring phenology models, namely, growing-degree-day model (GDD), temperature-precipitation parallel model (TPP) and temperature-precipitation sequential model (TPS) were employed to simulate the growing season start (GSS) retrieved from remote sensing data during 1981-2014 in mid-latitude (30 degrees N-55 degrees N) grasslands of the Northern Hemisphere. Results show that the average accuracies of predicted GSS based on TPP (root mean square errors (RMSE) = 9.9 days) and TPS (RMSE = 9.7 days) models are slightly higher than that based on GDD model (RMSE = 10.1 days) overall. Meanwhile, TPP/TPS model also exhibits a stronger capacity to simulate interannual variation of GSS (correlation coefficient (R) = 0.38/0.41 on average) than the GDD model (R = 0.3 on average). A revised Akaike information criterion (AICc_R) by including correlation coefficient between predicted and retrieved GSS was designed for the optimal model selection. The optimal models based on AICc_R present a stronger power in capturing the temporal pattern of spring phenology. GDD, TPP, and TPS model account for 32.7%, 20.7%, and 46.6% of the whole study region, respectively. Sub-regionally, TPS model dominates the temperate grasslands (66.1%), whereas GDD model dominates the cool semidesert grasslands (58.1%). Regions occupied by GDD model as the optimal model are generally cooler and wetter during February to May than those taken up by TPP and TPS model. Further analysis indicates higher heat and water requirements are needed in the most of warmer places. Overall, this study emphasizes the important role of thermal-moisture background in controlling the spatial pattern of spring phenology of northern grasslands in response to climate change. Precipitation is very important for triggering spring phenology in the temperate grasslands but not in the cool semidesert grasslands.

Abstract:Vegetation phenological models play a major role in terrestrial ecosystem modeling. However, substantial uncertainties still occur in phenology models because the mechanisms underlying spring phenological events are unclear. Taking into account the asymmetric effects of daytime and nighttime temperature on spring phenology, we analyzed the performance of 17 spring phenological models by combining the effects of photoperiod and precipitation. The global inventory modeling and mapping study third-generation normalized difference vegetation index data (1982–2014) were used to extract the start of the growing season (SOS) in the North–South Transect of Northeast Asia. The satellite-derived SOS of deciduous needleleaf forest (DNF), mixed forest (MF), open shrublands (OSL), and woody savannas (WS) showed high correlation coefficients (r) with the model-predicted SOS, with most exceeding 0.7. For all vegetation types studied, the models that considered the effect of photoperiod and precipitation did not significantly improve the model performance. For temperature-based models, the model using the growing-degree-day temperature response had a lower root mean square error compared with the models using the sigmoid temperature response Importantly, we found that daily maximum temperature was most suitable for the spring phenology prediction of DNF, OSL, and WS; daily mean temperature for MF; and daily minimum temperature for grasslands. These findings indicate that future spring phenological models should consider the asymmetric effect between daytime and nighttime temperature across different vegetation types.
Process-Based Simulation And Prediction Of Plant Phenology Spatiotemporal Variations

Abstract:Using tree first leaf unfolding and grass green-up data, and daily air temperature and precipitation data, local and regional unified phenology models were fitted and validated in northern China and the Inner Mongolian Grassland, respectively. Based on the regional phenology models, spatiotemporal patterns of first leaf unfolding dates and green-up dates were reconstructed over the continuous geographic coverage. Within the 250 optimum local first leaf unfolding models for the four tree species at 136 stations, the unified forcing and chilling models account for 83 and 17 %, respectively. Thus, forcing temperature predominantly influence first leaf unfolding dates in most parts of northern China, while the affect of chilling temperature was stronger for earlier than later first leaf unfolding species. Spatial and temporal validation confirmed the capability and reliability of the 16 regional unified species-specific models in predicting leaf unfolding dates in the four climate regions. The reconstructed leaf unfolding dates show a significant advancement in most parts of northern China over 1960-2009, which is stronger for earlier than later first leaf unfolding species. For grass green-up modeling, previous temperature accumulation controls green-up dates of the three grass species at three stations, while both previous temperature and precipitation accumulations control green-up dates of these grass species at another three stations. The accumulated precipitation plays a more important role as the precondition of forcing temperature than as the supplementary condition of forcing temperature in triggering green-up of grasses. The accuracy of the regional unified models in simulating and predicting green-up dates of grasses at internal and external stations is at acceptable levels overall. The reconstructed mean green-up dates for the three grass species represented a similar spatial pattern across the Inner Mongolian Grassland, which is aligned approximately along the thermal and moisture gradient. Spatial patterns of green-up date linear trends indicate a significant advancement at 40.3-71.4 % of all grids over the Inner Mongolian Grassland during 1983-2009.
A New Process-Based Model for Predicting Autumn Phenology: How is Leaf Senescence Controlled by Photoperiod and Temperature Coupling?

Abstract:Autumn phenological variation of temperate and northern ecosystems plays a major but poorly defined role in the global carbon cycle. Constructing robust process-based autumn phenology models is key for improving current ecosystem models to accurately simulate ecosystem productivity and carbon sequestration. In this study, we developed a new process-based autumn phenology model. The model was fitted and validated using 67 leaf coloration and brown-down time series collected for 27 woody and herbaceous species at 18 stations on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from 1981 to 2012. Then, we used the model to analyze the spatial and interspecific differentiation of driving factors of leaf senescence. Moreover, we compared fitting and validation precisions of the new model and previously published models. Results show that leaf senescence processes were triggered by photoperiod shortening in 61.2% of time series but by daily minimum temperature decrease in 38.8% of time series. Photoperiod control of the leaf senescence start occurs predominantly at stations with shorter annual maximum daylength (88.9%), while daily minimum temperature control of the leaf senescence start appears mainly at stations with longer annual maximum daylength (71.0%), especially for the native species. The new model reveals coupling effects of shortened photoperiod and decreased daily minimum temperature on leaf senescence processes. Comparing with the representative existing process-based autumn phenology models, the new model is a more general model and more robust in fitting and predicting leaf coloration and brown-down dates. Our study has provided a new insight on the understanding of leaf senescence mechanisms in winter deciduous trees and herbaceous plants, and significantly improved the ability to predict climate change impacts on vegetation growth and carbon balance in the sensitive biogeographical region of global climate change.
Incorporating Water Availability into Autumn Phenological Model Improved China's Terrestrial Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) Simulation

Abstract:Ecosystem models provide an effective approach to quantify the terrestrial carbon cycle, but the lack of accurate phenological information prevents them from better simulations of the physical processes. Compared with spring phenology (i.e. the start of the growing season, SOS), the vegetation phenology in autumn (the end of the growing season, EOS) is not well-simulated and it is challenging to incorporate vegetation phenology into ecosystem models. The simulation of EOS based on temperature and photoperiod was widely accepted, such as Delpierre et al (2009 Agric. For. Meteorol. 149 938–48)’s model (DM), yet its accuracy has not been fully discussed at a regional scale. Here, we developed a regional autumn phenological model (DMS) with inputs of temperature, photoperiod, and water availability for China’s terrestrial ecosystems. The new DMS model significantly improved the representation of EOS in terms of the lower root mean square error (RMSE), higher model efficiency, and a higher percentage of significant correlation with the referenced EOS. We observed widespread delaying trends of EOS with an average rate of 0.1 d yr−1 for vegetated areas over 2001–2018. We further incorporated the improved EOS into the boreal ecosystem productivity simulator (BEPS) and found that the phenology-modified BEPS model had better performances in predicting annual gross primary productivity (GPP) with ∼28% lower RMSE than the original model when testing against GPP measurements from flux tower sites. From 2001 to 2017, the interannual GPP simulated by the modified BEPS model showed an increasing trend with a rate of 6.0 g C m−2 yr−2. In conclusion, our study proves that water availability is of great significance for modeling autumn phenology, and the incorporation of phenological dates into an ecosystem model is helpful for productivity simulation.
Understanding the Continuous Phenological Development at Daily Time Step with a Bayesian Hierarchical Space-Time Model: Impacts of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events

Abstract:The impacts of climate change and extreme weather events (e.g. frost-, heat-, drought-, and heavy rainfall events) on the continuous phenological development over the entire seasonal cycle remained poorly understood. Previous studies mainly focused on modeling key phenological transition dates (e.g. discrete timing of spring bud-break and fall senescence) based on aggregated climate variables (e.g. mean temperature, growing-degree days). We developed and evaluated a Bayesian Hierarchical Space-Time model for Land Surface Phenology (BHST-LSP) to synthesize remotely sensed vegetation greenness with climate covariates at a daily temporal scale from 1981 to 2014 across the entire conterminous United States. The BHST-LSP model incorporated both temporal and spatial information and exhibited high predictive power in simulating daily phenological development with an overall out-of-sample R-2 of 0.80 +/- 0.17 and 0.72 +/- 0.20 for spring and fall phenology, respectively. The overall out-of-sample normalized root mean square errors were 9.3% +/- 6.1% and 9.9% +/- 5.2% between the observed and predicted vegetation greenness for spring and fall phenology, respectively. We found that a fast increase of temperature can accelerate the speed of spring green-up while a slow decrease of temperature can lead to a decelerated fall brown-down. Increasing accumulated precipitation can benefit daily phenological development over an entire growing season, while extreme rainfall events can have the opposite effects. More frequent frost events could slow spring leaf expansion and accelerate fall leaf senescence. Impacts of extreme heat events were complex and depended on water availability. Cropland in the Midwest as well as evergreen needleleaf forest along the coastal regions showed relatively strong resistance to drought events compared to other land cover types. The BHST-LSP model can be used to forecast vegetation phenology given future climate projection, thus providing valuable information for adopting climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.
