Abstract:Liquid metal coolants have a significant role in the design of advanced fusion reactors. There is a need for an investigation of the thermal behavior of the liquid metal in working reactor environment, such as when fluid flow at low Prandtl number (Pr) with a buoyancy effect, is subjected to a magnetic field. In the present study, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) for a low Pr number fluid flow resulting in turbulent heat transfer with buoyancy effect under a magnetic field has been carried out between two vertical plates kept at different temperatures. In this simulation, the values of the Hartmann number (Ha) were 0 and 6, Pr number was 0.06 and Grashof numbers were 6.4 x 10(5), 9.6 x 10(5), and 1.6 x 10(6). The turbulent quantities of the parameters such as the mean temperature, turbulent heat flux, and temperature variance were obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS). The Reynolds number (Re) for channel flow based on friction velocity averaged by both walls, viscosity, and channel half-width was set to be constant as Re-tau* = 150. A uniform magnetic field was applied in a direction perpendicular to the walls of the channel. The profiles of mean velocity and velocity fluctuations became asymmetric, and the tendency was enhanced with the increasing buoyancy effect. However, by the application of a magnetic field the tendency decreased. In other words, thermal transport between the walls became weak due to the magnetic effect. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Liquid-metals as coolant material in a fusion reactor have a significant role in the design of advanced reactors. To understand it better, investigation of thermal behavior under a magnetic field is needed, such as in the case of low Prandtl (Pr) number fluid flow with buoyancy effect. In the present study, direct numerical simulations (DNS) for low Pr number fluid flow of turbulent heat transfer with buoyancy effect has been carried out under a magnetic field. In this simulation the values of Hartmann number Ha were kept as 0 and 6, and Prandtl number was 0.06. Grashof numbers were 1.3 x 10(6) and 4.8 x 10(6). The Reynolds number for channel flow based on friction velocity, viscosity, and channel half-width was set to be constant as Re(tau) = 150. Using the simulation we could see that with an increase in heat transfer, thermal plume by the effect of buoyancy filled the entire region of the channel. In case of an applied magnetic field, it was seen that the turbulence became weak with the magnetic field, although the thermal transport was also increased by the buoyancy effect of the thermal plume. The Transition from Wall Modes to Multimodality in Liquid Gallium Magnetoconvection

Abstract:Coupled laboratory-numerical experiments of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in liquid gallium subject to a vertical magnetic field are presented. The experiments are carried out in two cylindrical containers with diameter-to-height aspect ratio $\Gamma = 1.0$ and $2.0$ at varying thermal forcing (Rayleigh numbers $10^5 \lesssim Ra \lesssim 10^8$) and magnetic field strength (Chandrasekhar numbers $0\lesssim Ch \lesssim 3\times 10^5$). Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations confirm that magnetoconvection in our finite cylindrical tanks onsets via non-drifting wall-attached modes, in good agreement with asymptotic predictions for a semi-infinite domain. With increasing supercriticality, the experimental and numerical thermal measurements and the numerical velocity data reveal transitions between wall mode states with different azimuthal mode numbers and between wall-dominated convection to wall and interior multimodality. These transitions are also reflected in the heat transfer data, which combined with previous studies, connect onset to supercritical turbulent behaviors in liquid metal magnetoconvection over a large parameter space. The gross heat transfer behaviors between magnetoconvection and rotating convection in liquid metals are compared and discussed.

Abstract:An investigation of MHD effects on Flibe simulant fluid (aqueous potassium hydroxide solution) flows has been conducted under the U.S.-Japan JUPITER-II collaboration program using "FLIHY" pipe flow facility at UCLA. Mean and fluctuating temperature profiles in a conducting wall pipe were measured for low Reynolds number turbulent flows using a thermocouples probe at constant heat flux condition. It is suggested that the temperature profiles are characterized by interaction between turbulence production, turbulence suppression due to magnetic field and thermal stratification occurred even under the situation where quite small temperature difference exists in the pipe cross-section.

Abstract:Liquid metal buoyant flow around two differentially heated horizontal cylinders in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated experimentally. While magneto-convection in pipes or ducts has been studied theoretically and experimentally in recent years, data for heat transfer at immersed obstacles are rare and, to our knowledge, detailed experimental investigations on this fundamental magnetohydrodynamic problem do not exist. In the present work, two horizontal cylinders inserted into an adiabatic rectangular cavity filled with gallium–indium–tin are kept at constant temperatures to establish a driving temperature gradient in the surrounding liquid metal. The buoyancy-driven flow, quantified by the Grashof number , is varied in the range . With increasing magnetic field, expressed via the Hartmann number , different flow regimes are identified from measurements for . The effect of the electromagnetic force primarily consists in suppressing turbulence and damping the convective flow. The heat transfer is quantified in terms of the non-dimensional Nusselt number , and its dependence on , which is identified as the important group governing the flow, is discussed.

It is established that in a liquid, which is placed in a magnetic field, the temperature gradient can cause a convective mass flow, which leads to the appearance of an electric field in the surrounding space. The distribution of electric potential for various geometric implementations is calculated. A comparison of the obtained effect for normal and superfluid 4He is performed.

Abstract:The scaling theory of Grossmann and Lohse (J. Fluid Mech. 407, 27 (2000)) for the turbulent heat and momentum transfer is extended to the magnetoconvection case in the presence of a (strong) vertical magnetic field. The comparison with existing laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the quasistatic limit allows to restrict the parameter space to very low Prandtl and magnetic Prandtl numbers and thus to reduce the number of unknown parameters in the model. Also included is the Chandrasekhar limit for which the outer magnetic induction field B is large enough such that convective motion is suppressed and heat is transported by diffusion. Our theory identifies four distinct regimes of magnetoconvection which are distinguished by the strength of the outer magnetic field and the level of turbulence in the flow, respectively.

Abstract:The interplay between convective, rotational and magnetic forces defines the dynamics within the electrically conducting regions of planets and stars. Yet their triadic effects are separated from one another in most studies, arguably due to the richness of each subset. In a single laboratory experiment, we apply a fixed heat flux, two different magnetic field strengths and one rotation rate, allowing us to chart a continuous path through Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC), two regimes of magnetoconvection, rotating convection and two regimes of rotating magnetoconvection, before finishing back at RBC. Dynamically rapid transitions are determined to exist between jump rope vortex states, thermoelectrically driven magnetoprecessional modes, mixed wall- and oscillatory-mode rotating convection and a novel magnetostrophic wall mode. Thus, our laboratory ‘pub crawl’ provides a coherent intercomparison of the broadly varying responses arising as a function of the magnetorotational forces imposed on a liquid-metal convection system.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the impact of variable permeability as well as chemical reactions on the oscillatory free convective flow that passes parallel porous flat plates with fluctuating temperature and concentration in the presence of a magnetic field. A vertical channel is assumed to be rotating at an angular velocity [math]. Periodic free stream velocity causes oscillations in one plate, while periodic suction velocity causes oscillations in the other plate. Complex variable notations are used to solve the governing equations. The perturbation technique is used to derive analytical expressions for the temperature, concentration, and velocity fields. In this study, various parameters were investigated in relation to mean velocity, mean temperature, mean concentration, amplitude, and phase difference. The study also examines the impact on secondary velocity, primary velocity, temperature, concentration, and heat transfer rate during transients. The outcomes are presented graphically for the physical parameters of the problem. The findings contribute to optimizing systems and improving efficiency in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Heat and momentum transfer of low-Prandtl-number fluid ($Pr=0.029$) in a closed rectangular cavity ($100\times60\times10$ mm$^3$) heated at one side and cooled at the opposite side are analyzed. The electromagnetic forces into the liquid metal are generated by the travelling magnetic field inductor and directed towards buoyancy forces. Large eddy simulations are performed with the Grashof number $Gr$ from $1.9\cdot 10^5$ to $7.6\cdot 10^7$ and the electromagnetic forcing parameter $F$ from $2.6\cdot 10^4$ to $2.6\cdot10^6$. An experimental validation of the simulation results of vertical convection and electromagnetically driven flow using GaInSn alloy has been performed. Three types of flow patterns are obtained for different interaction parameters $ N = F / Gr $: counterclockwise flow, clockwise flow, and coexistence of two vortices. Analysis of the Reynolds number shows that the transition zone from natural convection to electromagnetic stirring lies in the range $0.02<F/Gr<0.07$ and two braking modes are found. The transition point between the convective heat transfer regimes is found for $ F / Gr $ around 1. The analysis of isotherms deformation showed that in such convective systems it is possible to achieve minimum deviation of the isotherm shape from a straight line in the range of $ 0.05 <F/Gr <0.2 $.

Abstract:Free convection in magnet field caused by inhomogeneous temperature is called Magne-tothermal convection; it is droved by magnetic force familiar with natural convection droved by gravity. But magnets can be well designed to control the intensities and direction of this kind of convection. A horizontal tube in magnet field heated slightly off the field center was studied in this article. The temperature distributions on axes and wall were presented, according to which the flux and velocity of the Magnetothermal convection was calculated. The result shows that an obvious Magnetothermal convection in the horizontal tube was induced by the electromagnet.

Abstract:Convective instability in a horizontal ferromagnetic liquid layer with rigid boundaries is investigated in the presence of both an uniform magnetic field and a vertical quasi-periodic forcing having two incommensurate frequencies ω 1 and ω 2 . A linearized convective instability analysis predicting the onset of convection is performed and by means of a Galerkin projection truncated to the first order, the linear dynamic of the system is reduced to a damped quasi-periodic Mathieu oscillator. Using a balance harmonic analysis, it turns out that at sufficiently low vibration frequencies, we recover the critical instability parameters related to the unmodulated case where the convection is mainly due to the magnetic mechanism. This feature means that the buoyancy mechanism does not contribute into the convective cells formation and consequently heating from below or from above does not alter the onset of convection. However, at sufficiently high vibration frequencies, both the magnetic and buoyancy mechanisms are operative and here we are dealing with a magneto-gravitational parametric resonance convection. The transition between these convective modes is occurred via bicritical states giving rise to cusp points in the magnetic Rayleigh number besides discontinuities in its corresponding critical wave number. In addition, it is shown that a proper tuning of the irrational frequency ratio ω = ω 2 / ω 1 provides a control of the convection onset as well as the nature of its mechanism. Moreover, special attention is devoted to highlight the effect of the Prandtl number on the dynamic of the system at different values of the frequency ratio ω .

Magnetoconvection in a Long Vertical Enclosure With Walls of Finite Electrical Conductivity

Abstract:Magnetoconvection in a tall vertical box with vertical hot and cold walls, and an imposed steady uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the temperature gradient, is analyzed numerically. The geometry and the values of the non-dimensional parameters - the Prandtl number of 0.025, the Rayleigh number of $7.5 \times 10^5$, and the Hartmann number between 0 and 798 - match those of an earlier experiment. A parametric study of the effect of wall electric conductivity, across a wide range of conductance ratio values, on flow properties is performed. Two configurations of electric boundary conditions are explored. In one configuration, all walls have finite electric conductivity, while in the other, only the walls with constant temperature are electrically conducting. The flows are analyzed using their integral properties and distributions of velocity, temperature, and electric currents. It is found that, in general, the convection flow is suppressed by the magnetic field. However, this effect is strongly modified by the wall's electric conductivity and is markedly different for the two wall configurations. The associated changes in flow structure, rate of heat transfer, and flow's kinetic energy are revealed. It is also shown that the assumption of quasi-two-dimensionality may not be valid under some conditions, even at high Hartmann numbers.

Abstract:In this study, a mathematical analysis is presented for the hydromagnetic convective flow of an incompressible, chemically reacting, and electrically and thermally conducting viscoelastic fluid through a vertical channel bounded by the porous regime under the action of an applied magnetic field with Hall current and induced magnetic field effects. The left wall of the channel is considered to be nonmagnetic, whereas the right wall of the channel is periodically magnetized. The flow within the channel is induced due to the nonuniform wall temperature and concentration, periodic pressure gradient, and periodic movement of the right wall. The method of separation of variable is used to convert the flow governing coupled partial differential equations into the ordinary differential equations that are solved analytically, and the solution for fluid velocity, induced magnetic field, temperature, and concentration is presented in a closed form. Numerical computation has been performed to demonstrate the impact of various system parameters on the fluid flow behavior. It is observed that oscillations increase the primary flow and primary induced magnetic field. Buoyancy forces have a tendency to lessen the secondary induced magnetic field. Furthermore, it is examined that magnetic diffusivity increases the primary flow, whereas it decreases the secondary flow and primary induced magnetic field.

Abstract:The effects of a vertical static magnetic field on the flow structure and global transport properties of momentum and heat in liquid metal Rayleigh–Bénard convection are investigated. Experiments are conducted in a cylindrical convection cell of unity aspect ratio, filled with the alloy GaInSn at a low Prandtl number of $Pr=0.029$ . Changes of the large-scale velocity structure with increasing magnetic field strength are probed systematically using multiple ultrasound Doppler velocimetry sensors and thermocouples for a parameter range that is spanned by Rayleigh numbers of $10^{6}\leqslant Ra\leqslant 6\times 10^{7}$ and Hartmann numbers of $Ha\leqslant 1000$ . Our simultaneous multi-probe temperature and velocity measurements demonstrate how the large-scale circulation is affected by an increasing magnetic field strength (or Hartmann number). Lorentz forces induced in the liquid metal first suppress the oscillations of the large-scale circulation at low $Ha$ , then transform the one-roll structure into a cellular large-scale pattern consisting of multiple up- and downwellings for intermediate $Ha$ , before finally expelling any fluid motion out of the bulk at the highest accessible $Ha$ leaving only a near-wall convective flow that persists even below Chandrasekhar’s linear instability threshold. Our study thus proves experimentally the existence of wall modes in confined magnetoconvection. The magnitude of the transferred heat remains nearly unaffected by the steady decrease of the fluid momentum over a large range of Hartmann numbers. We extend the experimental global transport analysis to momentum transfer and include the dependence of the Reynolds number on the Hartmann number.

Convection and Stratification of Temperature and Concentration

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of natural convection and the formation of delamination in an incompressible liquid due to convective laminar flows in a closed region heated from the side. Weak, medium and intensive modes of stationary laminar thermal, concentration and hemoconcentration (thermohaline) convection are considered, in which nonlinear flow features are manifested that can radically change the flow structure and characteristics of heat and mass transfer. Nonmonotonic dependences of temperature and concentration segregation in the center of the square region on the Grashof number (an intensity of flow) were found. The features of the formation of a nonstationary periodic structure of thermal convection in boundary layers and in the core of a convective flow in a closed region are shown. Details of the formation of countercurrents inside the region with the direction opposite to the main convective flow are given. The influence of vertical and horizontal vibrations on oscillatory convection is shown.

Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a strong vertical magnetic field

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations are carried out to study flow structure and transport properties in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical cell of aspect ratio one with an imposed axial magnetic field. Flows at the Prandtl number 0.025 and the Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers up to $10^9$ and 1400 are considered. The results are consistent with those of earlier experimental and numerical data. As anticipated, the heat transfer rate and kinetic energy are suppressed by strong magnetic field. At the same time, their growth with the Rayleigh number is found to be faster in flows at high Hartmann numbers. This behaviour is attributed to the newly discovered flow regime characterized by prominent quasi two-dimensional structures reminiscent of vortex sheets observed earlier in simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Rotating wall modes similar to those in the Rayleigh-Bénard convection with rotation are found in flows near the Chandrasekhar linear stability limit. Detailed analysis of the spatial structure of the flows and its effect of global transport properties is reported.

Abstract:In this article, natural convections of a magnetic fluid in a cubic cavity under a uniform magnetic field are investigated experimentally and numerically. Results obtained from experiments and numerical simulations reveal that the magnetic field and magnetization are influenced by temperature. There exist relative larger magnetization and magnetic forces in the regions near the upper wall and center inside the cavity than in the region near the bottom and side walls. A weak flow roll occurs inside cavity under the magnetic force, and it brings the low temperature fluid downward in the center region, and streams the high temperature fluid upward along the regions near the sidewalls. With the magnetic field imposed, the heat transfer inside the cavity is enhanced significantly compared to that without the magnetic field, and increasing the strength of the magnetic field the heat transfer is increased further.

With the increase of the Hartmann number, the Taylor-vortex-like structures shrink, move closer to the inner cylinder, and turn into unsteady but perfect tori at sufficiently high Hartmann numbers.
Scrutiny of convective MHD second‐grade fluid flow within two alternatively conducting vertical surfaces with Hall current and induced magnetic field

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to examine the heat and mass transport behavior of transient magnetohydrodynamics second‐grade fluid (elastico‐viscous fluid) flow within a vertical channel bounding the porous regime with the Hall phenomenon and induced magnetic field (IMF). The flow system consists of a strong transverse magnetic field that gives rise to the Hall phenomenon and IMF. The right vertical surface of the channel is conducting and oscillations in its plane in the vertical direction while the left vertical surface of the channel is nonconducting and stationary. The suitable dimensionless setup transforms the flow model into a simplified comparable model which is solved analytically with the assistance of the method of separation of variables. Numerical computation is performed with the aid of MATHEMATICA software to explore the results from the analytical solutions. The results of the investigation are helpful in analyzing the nature of the elastic‐viscous fluids. A noteworthy result noted from the investigation is that there appears a reverse flow in the direction of normal flow when the magnetic interaction parameter is large. For the small magnetic interaction parameter, such a flow is not seen. Hall current reduces the strength of the principal IMF and induces the strength of the secondary generated magnetic field.
