Abstract:The design and development of a wing for a completely brand-new aircraft represents, in aeronautics, one of the highest challenges from an engineering point of view. The present work describes a novel methodology devoted to execute numeric simulation in a non-linear post-buckling regime to verify the composite wing compliance under the design load conditions. The procedure was developed as part of a wing design and research activity and was motivated by the need to have more realistic results, without standard conservatisms like the no-buckling up to ultimate load, to be of use for achieving further weight savings. To carry this out, it was obviously necessary to ensure that the structural integrity was also guaranteed in the post-buckling regime, above the limit load, and therefore in a highly non-linear regime. The present work illustrates a numerical approach based on non-linear finite element analysis which uses the inertia relief option in order to have a more realistic representation of the structural response of the wing in its real context. All that represents a novelty since, at present, the commercial FE codes allow us to use the inertia relief option exclusively for linear analysis. Obviously, the approach can be applied to any other structural component with similar needs. The obtained results show that the differences between linear and non-linear regime are not negligible and, above all, that it is possible to design a wing (or other structural components) considering, at the same time, the large deformation due to the post-buckling regime, the material non-linearities due to the failures and any other non-linearities in order to achieve the challenging weight requirement of the new aircraft generation.

Abstract:A novel frequency-domain analytical-numerical model for the aerodynamic solution of camber morphing wings is developed. The model combines an unsteady lifting-line formulation with Küssner–Schwarz aerodynamic theory to provide the pressure distribution and thus the transcendental aerodynamic matrix that relates the generalized aerodynamic forces to the Lagrangian coordinates of a given wing structural dynamics model. The state-space form of the aerodynamic loads is obtained from the rational matrix approximation of the aerodynamic matrix. This, combined with the wing structural dynamics operator, can readily provide the state-space form of the aeroelastic problem. To assess the accuracy of the proposed aerodynamic solution method, numerical investigations are performed. These consist of its application to several conventional wing configurations and wings with camber morphing, followed by the comparisons of the corresponding solutions with the predictions given by a well-validated panel-method solver for potential flows. These results are shown to be in very good agreement, thus demonstrating that the proposed approach can capture the effects due to wing tapering, sweep angle, and camber morphing, while requiring a remarkably lower computational effort. The excellent accuracy of a few-pole finite-state approximation of the aerodynamic matrix is finally proven for a swept wing with camber morphing.

Abstract:This article proposes a camber morphing wing model that can continuously change its camber. A mathematical model is proposed and a kinematic simulation is performed to verify the wing’s ability to change camber. An aerodynamic model is used to test its aerodynamic characteristics. Some important aerodynamic analyses are performed. A comparative analysis is conducted to explore the relationships between aerodynamic parameters, the rotation angle of the trailing edge, and the angle of attack. An improved artificial fish swarm optimization algorithm is proposed, referred to as the weighted adaptive artificial fish-swarm with embedded Hooke–Jeeves search method. Some comparison tests are used to test the performance of the improved optimization algorithm. Finally, the proposed optimization algorithm is used to optimize the proposed camber morphing wing model.

Abstract:<p>Morphing aircraft structures usually introduce greater compliance into aerodynamic sections, and therefore will affect the aeroelasticity with the potential risk of increased flutter. A low-fidelity model of an active camber morphing wing and its aeroelastic model are developed in order to investigate the potential critical speed by exploiting its chord-wise dimension and flexibility. Such a model may be used for conceptual design, where low fidelity models are used to explore and optimise a wide range of configurations. The morphing camber concept is implemented using a continuous representation of a two-segment structure with a rigid segment and a deformable part. The aeroelastic model is developed based on both steady and unsteady aerodynamic models, so that different parameters can be easily modified to examine changes in the flutter solutions. Of particular interest are the ratio of the morphing segment length to the chord, and its relative stiffness, as such morphing camber is potential operated using the deformable part as a flap. By comparing the results of the quasi-steady and unsteady aerodynamic models, it is shown that the quasi-steady aerodynamic model gives a more conservative prediction of the flutter speed. In addition, responses in phase space are simulated to show the fundamental aeroelastic behaviour of the morphing camber wing. It is also shown that the active compliant segment can be used to stabilise the morphing aircraft by using feedback control. This paper provides a system-level insight through mathematical modelling, parameter analysis and feedback control into dynamics applications of morphing camber.</p>

Abstract:The pursuit of more efficient transport has led engineers to develop a wide variety of aircraft configurations with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and emissions. However, these innovative designs introduce significant aeroelastic couplings that can potentially lead to structural failure. Consequently, aeroelastic analysis and optimization have become an integral part of modern aircraft design. In addition, aeroelastic testing of scaled models is a critical phase in aircraft development, requiring the accurate prediction of aeroelastic behavior during scaled model construction to reduce costs and mitigate the risks associated with full-scale flight testing. Achieving a high degree of similarity between the stiffness, mass distribution and flow field characteristics of scaled models and their full-scale counterparts is of paramount importance. However, achieving similarity is not always straightforward due to the variety of configurations of modern lightweight aircraft, as identical geometry cannot always be directly scaled down. This configuration diversity has a direct impact on the aeroelastic response, necessitating the use of computational aeroelasticity tools and optimization algorithms. This paper presents the development of an aeroelastic scaling framework using multidisciplinary optimization. Specifically, a parametric Finite Element Model (FEM) of the wing is created, incorporating the parameterization of both thickness and geometry, primarily using shell elements. Aerodynamic loads are calculated using the Doublet Lattice Method (DLM) employing twist and camber correction factors, and aeroelastic coupling is established using infinite plate splines. The aeroelastic model is then integrated within an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm to achieve static and dynamic similarity between the scaled model and the reference wing. A notable contribution of this work is the incorporation of internal geometry parameterization into the framework, increasing its versatility and effectiveness.

Abstract:The chord-wise bending airfoil wing could be achieved by employing a kind of active morphing skin which was embedded with pneumatic muscle fibers. This camber morphing structure involves the discipline of structural mechanics which is analysed in this paper. Carbon fiber composite plate is utilized for the upper surface skin of the chord-wise bending airfoil structure, so the approach described in this paper starts from deformation analysis of the upper surface skin based on the classical laminate theory. Energy method was also used for solving the shape function of the upper surface skin which was under the condition of pure bending. While the active morphing skin was actuated at a series of discrete actuation pressures, the fixed geometrical shapes of the chord-wise bending airfoil structure could be obtained. Meanwhile the fmite element method (FEM) was used for analyzing this chord-wise bending airfoil structure and the deformed shapes of the upper surface skins would be obtained. Deformed shapes of the upper surface skins between numerical analysis result and FEM analysis result were compared in this paper. This structural analysis work provides useful design and camber morphing characteristics for chord-wise bending airfoil structure. Developers of future shape-adaptive air vehicles have been provided with structural design tools.

Abstract:Aeronautics research has continually sought to achieve the adaptability and morphing performance of avian wings, but in practice, wings of all scales continue to use the same hinged control-surface embodiment. Recent research into compliant and bio-inspired mechanisms for morphing wings and control surfaces has indicated promising results, though often these are mechanically complex, or limited in the number of degrees-of-freedom (DOF) they can control. Seeking to improve on these limitations, we apply a new paradigm denoted Autonomous Material Composites to the design of avian-scale morphing wings. With this methodology, we reduce the need for complex actuation and mechanisms, and allow for three-dimensional placement of stretchable fiber optic strain gauges (Optical Lace) throughout the metamaterial structure. This structure centers around elastomeric conformal lattices, and by applying functionally-graded warping and thickening to this lattice, we allow for local tailoring of the compliance properties to fit the desired morphing. As a result, the wing achieves high-deformation morphing in three DOF: twist, camber, and extension/compression, with these morphed shapes effectively modifying the aerodynamic performance of the wing, as demonstrated in low-Reynolds wind tunnel testing. Our sensors also successfully demonstrate differentiable trends across all degrees of morphing, enabling the future state estimation and control of this wing.

Abstract:The intelligent morphing airfoil can adaptively change the shape of the airfoil according to different flight conditions to improve aerodynamic efficiency and aircraft performance. Thus, an intelligent airfoil structure is designed to achieve continuous and smooth deformation of the trailing edge of the airfoil, where a macro fiber composite is considered as an actuator, and a carbon fiber reinforced composite material is chosen as a load-bearing part. An experimental model is made based on the three-dimensional designed model, and the trailing edge deformability of the airfoil under direct current drive is analyzed through the static experiments. Then, a shear stress transfer turbulence model is used to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of the designed airfoil by the computational fluid dynamics module in COMSOL Multiphysics. The effects of the trailing edge deflection angle, the attack angle of the airfoil, and the incoming velocity on the aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing airfoil are also studied. Finally, the dynamical characteristics of the variable camber airfoil are discussed experimentally, including the natural frequencies and the effect of the high-low coupling excitations on the vibration of the airfoil.
Data-driven nonlinear aeroelastic models of morphing wings for control

Abstract:Accurate and efficient aeroelastic models are critically important for enabling the optimization and control of highly flexible aerospace structures, which are expected to become pervasive in future transportation and energy systems. Advanced materials and morphing wing technologies are resulting in next-generation aeroelastic systems that are characterized by highly-coupled and nonlinear interactions between the aerodynamic and structural dynamics. In this work, we leverage emerging data-driven modeling techniques to develop highly accurate and tractable reduced-order aeroelastic models that are valid over a wide range of operating conditions and are suitable for control. In particular, we develop two extensions to the recent dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc) algorithm to make it suitable for flexible aeroelastic systems: 1) we introduce a formulation to handle algebraic equations, and 2) we develop an interpolation scheme to smoothly connect several linear DMDc models developed in different operating regimes. Thus, the innovation lies in accurately modeling the nonlinearities of the coupled aerostructural dynamics over multiple operating regimes, not restricting the validity of the model to a narrow region around a linearization point. We demonstrate this approach on a high-fidelity, three-dimensional numerical model of an airborne wind energy (AWE) system, although the methods are generally applicable to any highly coupled aeroelastic system or dynamical system operating over multiple operating regimes. Our proposed modeling framework results in real-time prediction of nonlinear unsteady aeroelastic responses of flexible aerospace structures, and we demonstrate the enhanced model performance for model predictive control. Thus, the proposed architecture may help enable the widespread adoption of next-generation morphing wing technologies.

Abstract:This study addresses the crucial role of post-buckling behavior analysis in the structural design of composite aeronautical structures. Traditional engineering practices tend to result in oversized composite components, increasing structural weight. EASA AMC 20-29's Building Block Approach suggests phased testing, but its time and cost challenges necessitate a shift to high-fidelity post-buckling analyses, exemplified by MSC NASTRAN SOL 400. This approach, showcased in the analysis of the Next Generation Civil Tilt Rotor Technology Demonstrator's wing (NGTCTR-TD), effectively de-risks static tests, contributing to a more efficient certification process. The study demonstrates how advanced simulations provide detailed insights into local buckling phenomena, allowing precise stress distribution analysis. These analyses eliminate the risk of structural failure, paving the way for safer, more efficient, and cost-effective airframe structures. Future developments aim to validate numerical analyses with experimental data, further emphasizing the reliability and benefits of high-fidelity simulations.

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing wings are part of a novel research direction offering greatly increased adaptability for use in unmanned aerial vehicles. Recent models published in the literature often rely on simplifications of the bird wing apparatus and fail to preserve many of the macroscopic morphological features. Therefore, a more holistic design approach could uncover further benefits of truly bioinspired bird wing models. With this issue in mind, a prototype inspired by crow wings (Corvus genus) is developed, which is capable of planform wing morphing. The prototype imitates the feather structure of real birds and replicates the folding motion with a carbon fiber reinforced polymer skeleton with one controllable degree of freedom. The mechanism supplies a smooth airfoil lifting surface through a continuous morphing motion between a fully extended and a folded state. When extended, it has an elliptic planform and emarginated slots between primary remiges. In the folded state, the wingspan is reduced by 50% with a 40% reduction in surface area and the aspect ratio decreases from 2.9 to 1.2. Experimental data from a subsonic wind tunnel investigation is presented for flow velocities ranging from 5 to 20 m s(-1), corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 0.7 x 10(5)-2.8 x 10(5). The wing is analyzed in the three static states (folded, intermediate, and extended) through aerodynamic coefficients and flow visualizations along the surface. The bioinspired design enables the wing to capture several phenomena found on real bird wings. Through its morphing capabilities and intrinsic softness, the wing can sustain large angles of attack with greatly delayed stall and maintain optimal performance at different velocities.

Abstract:Contemporary computational analysis of modern aircraft structures demands rapid and efficient, yet accurate enough tools for the conceptual and preliminary design stages. On that front, a novel optimisation framework, utilising low-cost numerical tools for sizing composite materials aircraft wings subject to stiffness, strength and dynamic aeroelastic constraints is proposed herein. The structural representation of the numerical model is based on the well-established equivalent-plate methodology, capable of reducing the size and computational cost of the associated problem. An equivalent-plate model of a modern transport aircraft wing is developed and compared to its equivalent 3D Finite Element Method model. Results by means of natural frequencies and modes, indicate excellent accordance between the numerical models. An optimisation framework is then presented, with the ply thicknesses of a baseline lay-up being assigned as design variables. The developed framework succeeds to guide the mass of the wing to a minimum while satisfying the constraints under a critical loading scenario. Optimal lay-ups for the skins, spar webs and ribs as well as spar and rib caps dimensions are obtained. The presented optimisation framework, exhibiting high accuracy and efficiency, constitutes a robust numerical tool for the early design stages of composite aircraft wings.

Abstract:Morphing wings have a large potential to improve the overall aircraft performances, in a way like natural flyers do. By adapting or optimising dynamically the shape to various flight conditions, there are yet many unexplored opportunities beyond current proof-of-concept demonstrations. This review discusses the most prominent examples of morphing concepts with applications to two and three-dimensional wing models. Methods and tools commonly deployed for the design and analysis of these concepts are discussed, ranging from structural to aerodynamic analyses, and from control to optimisation aspects. Throughout the review process, it became apparent that the adoption of morphing concepts for routine use on aerial vehicles is still scarce, and some reasons holding back their integration for industrial use are given. Finally, promising concepts for future use are identified.
Multiobjective optimization of the LASER aircraft wing’s composite structural design

Abstract:Purpose Aircraft wings, one of the most important parts of an aircraft, have seen changes in its topological and design arrangement of both the internal structures and external shape during the past decades. This study, a numerical, aims to minimize the weight of multilaminate composite aerospace structures using multiobjective optimization. Design/methodology/approach The methodology started with the determination of the requirements, both imposed by the certifying authority and those inherent to the light, aerobatic, simple, economic and robust (LASER) project. After defining the requirements, the loads that the aircraft would be subjected to during its operation were defined from the flight envelope considering finite element analysis. The design vector consists of material choice for each laminate of the structure (20 in total), ply number and lay-up sequence (respecting the manufacturing rules) and main spar position to obtain a lightweight and cheap structure, respecting the restrictions of stress, margins of safety, displacements and buckling. Findings The results obtained indicated a predominance of the use of carbon fiber. The predominant orientation found on the main spar flange was 0° with its location at 28% of the local chord, in the secondary and main web were ±45°, the skins also had the main orientation at ±45°. Originality/value The key innovations in this paper include the evaluation, development and optimization of a laminated composite structure applied to a LASER aircraft wings considering both structural performance and manufacturing costs in multiobjetive optimization. This paper is one of the most advanced investigations performed to composite LASER aircraft.

Abstract:This work presents studies on static aeroelastic shape optimization of aircraft wings subject to large deformations. The physics are captured using a coupled 3D panel method and a nonlinear co-rotating beam finite element model. The wing is defined by a series of airfoils that are parameterized based on the definition of NACA 4-digit airfoils. The method assumes a solid cross section of isotropic material which is representative of foam core wings. Analytic expressions are derived for most of the cross-sectional stiffness properties, while approximations are introduced for the location of the shear center and the torsional stiffness. Optimized designs achieved using linear and nonlinear deformation models are compared and features are discussed. The objective is to minimize drag subject to constraints on geometry, tip displacement, and root bending moment. Results highlight the importance of using nonlinear models to accurately capture changes in wingspan due to large deformations, as even small differences in the wingspan can have a large effect on the induced drag. Non-planar wings with raised and drooped wingtips are also optimized, where drooped wings are found to achieve larger lift-to-drag ratios due to the increase in effective wingspan in the deformed configuration.

Exploring Multi-Fidelity Aeroelastic Tailoring: Prospect and Model Assessment

Abstract:The design and optimisation of aircraft wings are critical tasks in aerospace engineering, requiring a balance between structural integrity, aerostructural performance, and manufacturability. This multifaceted challenge involves the interplay of various disciplines, each with distinct parameters and constraints. Traditional design approaches often fall short, necessitating advanced methodologies like Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO). MDO integrates aerodynamic, structural, and manufacturability analyses to explore a vast design space and identify optimal solutions that meet performance, safety, and cost criteria. The work highlights the challenge of optimising aircraft designs using multiple models of varying fidelity. Traditional sequential optimisation approaches, which progressively integrate disciplines, may miss potential superior designs due to limited initial information. Instead, concurrent optimisation schemes are explored, utilising both low-fidelity (beam-based) and high-fidelity (shell-based) models. This approach promises structural feasibility, reduces computational costs, and incorporates high-fidelity information early in the design process. The envisioned methodology bridges different design stages, enabling better overall aircraft performance. By aligning and comparing a beam-based and shell-based model, the study explores their use in multi-fidelity optimisation. The results demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of this approach, offering a robust framework for future aircraft design projects.

Abstract:Morphing wings allow aircrafts to exhibit good aerodynamic performance at multiple points within a flight envelope. However, forthcoming aircraft designed for cross-speed domain operations impose fresh demands, particularly in the realm of wing shape adjustments, such as transient morphing. Inspired by the diving process of the northern gannet, this study proposes a morphing-wing eight-bar mechanism for transient variable sweeping under high-speed conditions. A comprehensive analysis of the rigid-flexible coupling dynamic models of the mechanism is developed by employing the finite-element floating frame of reference formulation. To numerically solve the dynamic equations, a concise reduced-order algorithm that included static equilibrium compensation is introduced. The maximum dynamic stress encountered during the morphing process at various speeds and time ratio at which each link is subjected to the maximum stress, referred to as the maximum stress-time ratio of each link, are evaluated. The results show that the maximum dynamic stress and maximum stress–time ratio serve as effective measures of the performance of the mechanism under high-speed working conditions. Although the proposed eight-bar variable-sweepback-wing mechanism requires further structural optimization to achieve superior high-speed performance, it demonstrates potential for high-speed applications.

Abstract:Morphing wingtips have the potential to improve aircraft performance. By connecting the wingtips and the wings with a compliant structure, a continuous aerodynamic surface can be achieved for a better aerodynamic performance. However, how to maintain the shape-changing capability while keeping a high stiffness to carry aerodynamic loads is a key problem. In this paper, based on asymmetric stiffness, a type of single-row corrugated panel is designed to satisfy the limited space around the wingtip. A finite element model of the single-row corrugated panels is established, and parameter analysis is performed to investigate the impact of the thickness characteristics of the corrugated panel on the folding angle. The corrugated panel is then optimised to find the maximum folding angle. Based on the optimisation results, corrugated panels with asymmetric and symmetric stiffness are fabricated and tested. The results demonstrate that the asymmetric stiffness corrugated panels have the capability to increase the wingtip folding angle.

Abstract:This study explores the use of origami composite structures as active aerodynamic control surfaces. Towards this goal, two origami concepts were designed leveraging a combination of analytical and finite element modeling, and computational fluid dynamics simulations. Wind tunnel tests were performed at different dynamic pressures in conjunction with two different active control laws to test the capability of obtaining desired drag values. The experiments revealed excellent structural rigidity and folding characteristics under aerodynamic loading. Future work will focus on developing advanced origami designs that allow for more deterministic folding as well as improved weight, stiffness, and fatigue characteristics in the use of materials. Upon completion of these improvements, it is anticipated that full-scale testing on a vehicle could be meaningfully conducted.
Numerical Investigation and Optimization of a Morphing Airfoil Designed for Lower Reynolds Number

Abstract:A novel concept of morphing airfoils, capable of changing camber and thickness, is proposed. A variable airfoil shape, defined by six input parameters, is achieved by allowing the three spinal points (at fixed axial positions) to slide vertically, while the upper and lower surfaces are determined by the lengths of the three corresponding ribs that are perpendicular to the spine. Thus, it is possible to find the most appropriate geometric configuration for a wide range of possible operating conditions often present with contemporary unmanned aerial vehicles. Shape optimizations for different Reynolds numbers and different cost functions are performed by coupling a genetic algorithm with simple panel method flow calculations. The obtained airfoils are presented and compared, whereas the proposed concept is validated by more advanced flow simulations. It appears that improvements in aerodynamic performance of nearly 20% can be expected at Re ranging from 0.05 × 106 to 0.1 × 106. The proposed methodology shows promise and can be applied to different types of lifting surfaces, including wing, tail or propeller blade segments. To check the viability of this method for producing airfoils that can be used in a practical sense, structural analysis of one of the obtained geometries using a simplified 1D finite element method as well as a more detailed 3D analysis are performed. The model is then 3D-printed on a fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer with a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) filament, and the capability of the airfoil to adequately morph between the two desired geometries is experimentally shown.
