Abstract:Social media has become prominent in recent years, especially among the young population, and they also substantially impact young people's eating habits. Furthermore, social media posts and visual interactions may trigger hedonic hunger, an increased desire for highly palatable food. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social media use and the concept of hedonic hunger in a sample of college students. 860 participants between 18 and 39 were recruited for the study. Data including demographic variables, weight, height, the Scale of Effects of Social Media on Eating Behavior (SESMEB), and the Turkish version of the Power of Food Scale (PFS) were gathered based on students' self-reports via face-to-face interviews. The most used social media outlet among all students was Instagram (60.1%), the average time spent on social media was 3.56 ± 1.91 h, and females spent significantly more time on social media than males ( p < 0.001). The mean PFS score was 3.52 ± 0.77, and the subscale scores for food availability, food present, and food tasted were 3.26 ± 0.99, 3.49 ± 0.89, and 3.76 ± 0.87, respectively. Female students who spent more than 2 h on social media had higher scores on SESMEB than those who spent 2 h or less a day ( p = 0.015). A significantly positive correlation was found between SESMEB scores and PFS aggregated scores ( r = 0.381) and subscale scores (for food availability, present, and tasted, r = 0.369; r = 0.354; and r = 0.282, respectively). Each 1-unit increase in the SESMEB score leads to an 8% increase in the risk of hedonic hunger. Considering the impact of social media on young people's eating habits and developing strategies may be crucial in shaping their eating patterns.

Abstract:American Journal of Health Promotion, Ahead of Print. PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and internet addiction in first-year university students (aged 18-25 years).DesignThe study was designed using a cross-sectional analytic model.SettingData collection took place at Dokuz Eylul University, involving a diverse group of first-year students from different faculties.SubjectsThe study population comprised 12,365 students, with 2890 individuals selected using cluster sampling.MeasuresInternet addiction was evaluated using the Online Cognition Scale (OCS). Data on obesity-related variables and demographic details were collected through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, t test, and ANOVA were applied for statistical evaluation.ResultsThe study included 2105 participants, with 43.8% males and 56.2% females. A significant positive correlation was found between body mass index (BMI) and OCS scores (P = .000), indicating a higher prevalence of internet addiction among individuals with higher BMI. Males had higher mean OCS scores (91.19 ± 35.14) than females (80.21 ± 30.51) (P = .00). Overweight and obese individuals exhibited higher scores on OCS sub-dimensions (P < .005). Notably, individuals with a BMI over 25 were categorized as overweight, and those with a BMI over 30 were classified as obese.ConclusionsThe findings demonstrate a noteworthy relationship between internet addiction and obesity among university students. The study emphasizes the necessity of increased attention to this issue in Turkey for the implementation of effective interventions and preventive measures.

Abstract:Those aged <45 years and those who perceived themselves as overweight had higher hedonic hunger. As the hedonic hunger score increases, the self‐esteem score decreases and the weight self‐stigmatisation score increases. Considering the hedonic hunger status in the prepared nutrition programmes may contribute to more successful results in having a healthy weight. Introduction This study aimed to determine the factors influencing the hedonic hunger status of overweight adults and to examine the relationship between hedonic hunger, self‐stigmatisation and self‐esteem in terms of weight. Methods This cross‐sectional study was conducted with 353 people living with obesity who applied to the Endocrine and Internal Medicine Clinic in Samsun, Turkey, between June and October 2022. Abstract:Emotional eating is independent of the individual’s hunger; It is an eating disorder that occurs as a result of mood changes such as anxiety, stress and sadness. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical and social growth and development, and the right or wrong habits gained during this period affect the individual's quality of life in the long run. This study was carried out on 204 individuals to examine the emotional eating status of university students. Harran University was chosen as the sample. In addition to the Turkish Emotional Meal scale, a personal information form was used as a data collection tool. SPSS 22 package program was used for statistical analysis. The sub-dimensions of the scale were evaluated according to the parameters of the participant’s body mass index, gender, disease status, dieting status of the person, and the number of meals they ate. The results were successful in giving the expected hypotheses. It has been concluded that emotional eating scores are high in female students, individuals on a diet, people with any disease, people who eat more meals during the day, and individuals with a BMI (Body Mass Index) value above normal. As a result of this research, it was thought that university students should be regularly trained by dietitians and psychologists. It was thought that giving training would increase awareness of healthy nutrition and this would increase the quality of life of young people.

Abstract:Purpose University students are one of the vulnerable groups in terms of having nutritional problems due to their lifestyle and social environment. This study aims to determine the consumption of fast food among university students and evaluate factors that may impact it, such as sociodemographic factors, body mass index (BMI) or nutritional habits. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted among a random sample of 184 university students (47.8% men and 52.2% women) with a mean age of 21.1 ± 2.0 years. The survey included students’ sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits and fast-food consumption. Chi-square test, t -test and binary logistic regression analysis were used depending on the characteristics of the data. Findings Results indicated that 39.7% of the students consumed fast food at least once in 15 days and preferred these foods for taste, workload and social activity. Consumption of fast food occurred at an earlier age in men (%13.6) and the portions were higher than portions of vegetables ( p = 0.001). By using regression analysis, a statistically significant relationship was found between the frequency of fast-food consumption and age, gender, economic status, BMI, the amount of vegetables consumed daily and the habit of eating breakfast ( p < 0.05). Research limitations/implications It is planned to reach more students in the study. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation to students became difficult or could not be reached. Originality/value This study is one of the rare studies examining students’ orientation to fast food. The number of studies in this field in Turkey is limited.
Sugar sweetened beverages consumption among female university students

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the consumption frequency of sugar sweetened beverages, physical activity, BMI values and their relationships among university students. Material/Methods The data collection has been carried out with the help of questionnaires. The target population were students between the ages of 18 and 30, who study at the Faculty of Health Sciences (67 students) or at the Faculty of Humanities (64 students). The frequency of beverage consumption was assessed with a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) designed for sugar sweetened beverages and physical activity with the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results The most frequently consumed sugar sweetened beverage was freshly squeezed or 100% fruit juice in both faculties. The difference between the average BMI of the two groups was statistically significant ( P = 0.035). A non-significant relationship was found between BMI and sugar sweetened beverages consumption. Conclusions The most consumed sugar sweetened beverage was freshly squeezed or 100% fruit juice, but it contains a lot of added sugar that contributes to developing overweight. Health education programmes are needed to teach the students of every faculty about healthy drink consumption.

Abstract:Background: Young females are at a higher risk of developing unhealthy eating behaviors. This study investigated the relationship between appetitive traits and eating behaviors among female university students. Methods: The study participants were 520 female university students from a public university in Eastern China. Appetitive traits were assessed using the Chinese version of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire (C-AEBQ). Data on eating behaviors, including food intake frequency, meal regularity, and dieting behavior, were collected using self-administered questionnaires. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated using self-reported data. Pearson's and Spearman's correlations were used to correlate appetitive traits with BMI and eating behaviors. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify different appetitive patterns, and logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between different appetitive patterns and eating behaviors. Results: Two food-approach traits (food enjoyment and emotional over-eating) were positively correlated with BMI, while two food-avoidance traits (slowness in eating and satiety responsiveness) showed negative correlations. Food responsiveness was linked to a higher intake of delivered food, spicy food, and sugar-sweetened beverages, whereas satiety responsiveness was correlated with more frequent meal skipping. The LPA identified four appetitive patterns: food approachers, food approachers with emotional under-eating, food avoiders, and food avoiders with emotional over-eating. Food avoiders had significantly lower BMI than the other groups. Compared to food approachers, food avoiders skipped breakfast more frequently, and food avoiders with emotional over-eating skipped both breakfast and lunch more often. After adjusting for BMI, appetitive patterns showed no significant relationship with dieting behavior. Conclusion: Among female university students, appetitive patterns correlated with eating behaviors, and students with food-avoidance patterns had a higher risk of meal irregularity. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing trait- and pattern-specific approaches to promote healthy eating behaviors among female university students.

Abstract:Background: People living with obesity receive treatment services from health professionals for their weight or other health needs. In order for the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who will be a member of the health team in the future, to raise awareness of the society, it is necessary to first determine their obesity prejudices and eating habits. Methods: The study is a cross-sectional and descriptive research. The study data were collected from 406 students studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences by online questionnaire method using a personal characteristics identification form, GAMS 27-Obesity Bias Scale and University Students Eating Behavior Scale (USEBS). The data were analyzed with SPSS 26 statistical software. Results: In this study, all students were found to be prone to prejudice according to the mean total score of the Obesity Bias Scale and Obesity Bias Scale was higher in female students studying in perfusion department. In the sub-dimensions of the University Students Eating Behavior Scale, the enjoyment of food score was found to have the highest mean score. Conclusion: According to the results of the study, there is a need to develop educational planning that will both increase the awareness of university students about the relationship between eating behaviors and obesity and eliminate obesity prejudice tendencies due to the fact that they are educated to provide services in the field of health.
Association between hedonic hunger and body mass index in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Hedonic hunger has been proposed as one of the important causes of obesity in recent years. In the present study, we systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the relationship between hedonic hunger and body mass index (BMI) in healthy adults. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched until January 19, 2023. All English-language original observational studies conducted on healthy adult subjects, which used the Power of Food Scale (PFS) to evaluate hedonic hunger were included. Quality assessment was done using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist, and StataMP-17 software was used for the meta-analysis. After screening, 25 observational studies with a total of 14457 participants were included. Twenty-four studies were cross-sectional, and one was a cohort study. Twenty-two studies examined both sexes, two studies were conducted only on women, and one study conducted analysis separately on men and women. The results of the meta-analysis showed a positive and significant association between hedonic hunger and BMI with a small effect size (r = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.18). In addition, a positive significant association was observed between subscales of PFS ("food available", "food present", and "food tasted") and BMI. The association between hedonic hunger and BMI was not affected by the results of meta-regression analysis of %female, mean age & BMI, and sample size. In conclusion, there was a positive significant association between hedonic hunger and BMI, but the effect size was weak. Considering the low quality of included studies, we need longitudinal design studies considering the association between these two variables as a primary outcome for a more accurate conclusion.
A Study of the Relationship between University Students’ Food Neophobia and Their Tendencies towards Orthorexia Nervosa

Abstract:Food neophobia, known as an avoidance of the consumption of unknown foods, can negatively impact nutritional quality. In orthorexia nervosa, there is an excessive mental effort to consume healthy food. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of food neophobia and orthorexia nervosa may experience food restrictions. This study aimed to assess food neophobia levels and orthorexia nervosa tendencies among university students, investigate the potential association between the two constructs, and explore the effect of the demographic characteristics of the participants on the variables. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 609 students enrolled at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. The data were collected through Google Forms using a sociodemographic information form, the Food Neophobia Scale, and the ORTO-11 scale. Ethics committee approval and institutional permission were obtained for the study. Of the students participating in the survey, 71.9% were female, 14.6% were classified as neophobic, and 47.1% had orthorexia nervosa symptoms. The mean scores from the Food Neophobia Scale (39.41 ± 9.23) and the ORTO-11 scale (27.43 ± 5.35) were in the normal range. Food neophobia was significantly higher among those who did not consume alcohol. Orthorexia nervosa symptoms were significantly more common among married people. In the correlation analysis, no significant relationship was found between age, food neophobia, and orthorexia nervosa. It can be said that food neophobia in this study is similar to in other studies conducted on university students. In addition, about half of the participants had symptoms of orthorexia nervosa. This result is higher compared to other studies conducted with university students. The findings of this study indicate that the participants care about the healthfulness of food.
Relationship between hedonic hunger and subjectively assessed sleep quality and perceived stress among university students: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined the relationship between hedonic hunger (HH), sleep quality, and stress levels among university students in the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design with participants (N = 565) recruited via convenience sampling. Data were collected with a self-administered, standardized, and validated online questionnaire. HH was assessed with the Palatable Eating Motives Scale (PEMS) and Power of Food Scale (PFS), sleep quality and sleep components were assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), stress was evaluated with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and physical activity was examined with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used to assess the relationship between HH and sleep quality and perceived stress. Results: There were positive associations between total PSQI scores and total PEMS (β = 0.14, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06-0.25, P = 0.001) and PFS (β = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.45-1.04, P < 0.001). The likelihood of poor sleep quality increased by 8% (odds ratio [OR] = 1.08, P = 0.020) and 43% (OR = 1.43, P < 0.001) for each one-unit increase in PEMS and PFS scores, respectively. We also found positive associations between PSS scores and total PEMS (β = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.26-0.63, P < 0.001) and PFS (β = 0.23, 95% CI: 1.04-2.22, P < 0.001) scores. Conclusion: Reducing HH and stress levels may help to enhance sleep quality among university students. Conversely, improving sleep quality and reducing stress levels could improve HH in this population.
Contextual Influences Affecting Patterns of Overweight and Obesity among University Students: a 50 Universities Population-Based Study in China

Abstract:Background: Many studies have examined childhood and adolescent obesity, but few have examined young adults and the effect of their home and current living environments on prevalence rates. The present study explores contextual factors affecting overweight and obesity among university students in China and, in particular, focuses on how the SES-obesity relationship varies across different geographical contexts.Methods: Participants were 11,673 students, who were identified through a multistage survey sampling process conducted in 50 universities. Individual data was obtained through a self-administered questionnaire, and contextual variables were retrieved from a national database. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to examine urban and regional variations in overweight and obesity.Results: Overall the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the study sample was 9.5% (95% CI 7.7, 11.3%). After controlling for individual factors, both attributes of the home location (regional GDP per capita and rurality) and the current university location (city population) were found to be important, thus suggesting that the different origins of students affect current levels of obesity. At the individual level, while students with more financial resources were more likely to be obese, the extent of this relationship was highly dependent upon area income and city size.Conclusion: The results of this study add important insights about the role of contextual factors affecting overweight and obesity among young adults and indicate a need to take into account both past as well as present environmental influences when considering the role of contextual factors in models of the nutrition transition.

Abstract:Objective: In this study, we assessed college students’ eating behaviors and determined the association between their eating behaviors and body image perception (feelings about body, shape, and weight). Methods: We surveyed college students (N = 184) enrolled at least parttime and actively living on campus during the 2019-2020 academic year. We used 4 validated surveys (EDE-Q, NEMS-P, SATAQ-3 and SATAQ-4) to collect all data. Two trained facilitators aided students in completing the surveys in the campus’s nutrition lab. We used weighted linear regression to assess the association between eating behaviors (frequency of fruit, vegetables, candy, and chips consumption available in dorm rooms, and meal consumption frequency at restaurants) (independent variables) and body image perception (dependent variable). We also calculated odds ratios. Results: We found statistically significant associations between students reducing their consumption of available fruit, vegetables, candy, soda, and chips in their dorm rooms to control weight and shape, choosing meals more frequently at fast-food versus sit-down restaurants, and unhappiness with weight and shape. Conclusion: Our results may assist college campus personnel in providing students with the necessary skills to develop better eating habits and improved body image. Students with a positive body image and a healthy relationship with food are more likely to have better mental and physical health.
The Effects of Smartphone and Internet Gaming Addiction on Eating Attitudes Among University Students

Abstract:Objective Smartphone addiction is a public health problem increasing with the technologic developments. It particularly affects the university students negatively in terms of psychological, physical, academic achievement and social relations. This study aims to investigate the relation of eating attitudes between smartphone addiction and internet gaming disorder, also the relation of smartphone addiction with obesity.Methods This cross-sectional and prospective study is consisted of 358 volunteer university students. Socio-demographic data form, Short Form of Smartphone Addiction Scale (SF-SAS), Eating Attitude Test (EAT), and internet gaming disorder scale were administered to the participants.Results Mean age of the participants was 22.27±3.10 years and 59.8% (n=214) were female. In terms of the variables “body mass index, body weight, faculty of the student, economic status of the family, and the people they live with together” were significantly different from controls. Also “monthly mobile phone invoice, EAT score, SF-SAS scores” were statistically different. A significant difference was found among “body weight groups” in terms of both EAT score and SF-SAS. According to the linear regression model variables of “gender, smartphone addiction, and school year” were determined as the predictors for EAT.Conclusion Our current study has revealed the relation between smartphone addiction and eating attitudes, and obesity. Smartphone addiction may lead to an increase in body weight, by affecting eating attitudes. Therefore, the effect of eating behavior disorders in the emergence of the smartphone addiction should be considered. Multi-disciplinary solutions are required to prevent this addiction that may increase over time.

Relationship between emotional eating and coping with stress of nursing students

Abstract:Purpose: This research aims to determine the relationship between the coping skills and emotional eating habits of young adults. Design and methods: The population consisted of 473 nursing students whom registered in the Faculty of Health Sciences at a state university in Turkey during 2018 and 2019 education terms. Data were collected through the Demographic Form, Turkish Emotional Eating Scale (TEES), and Coping Style Scale (CSS). Findings: "Eating in anxiety" (r = -.174; P = .000) and "eating in the negative mood" (r = -.123; P = .007) subscale scores of TEES showed a statistically significant, negative correlation with the "self-confident approach" subscale score of CSS. Practice implications: In light of the data, it is suggested to increase the frequency of psychological counseling offered for these students and setup behavior change training either an individual or group settings. Besides, the conjoint effort of health professionals and psychiatric nurses would be highly beneficial for the development of effective assessment tools to determine students at risk and engage in appropriate prevention strategies such as training programs that would have a direct impact on the students' habitual diet. Subsequent research is recommended incorporating additional variables such as body perception, ideal female image, expectations of perfection toward the body, and self-worth defined thru the body.

Abstract::Background: The frequency of take-out food consumption has increased rapidly among Chinese college students, which has contributed to high obesity prevalence. However, the relationships between take-out food consumption, body mass index (BMI), and other individual factors influencing eating behavior among college students are still unclear. This study explored the association of take-out food consumption with gender, BMI, physical activity, preference for high-fat and high-sugar (HFHS) food, major category, and degree level among Chinese college students. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 1220 college students in Beijing, China, regarding information about take-out food consumption, physical activity, and preference for HFHS food using a self-reported questionnaire. The logistic linear regression model was used to analyze the association between take-out food consumption and personal and lifestyle characteristics. Results: Out of 1220 college students, 11.6% of college students were overweight or obese. Among the personal and lifestyle characteristics, high frequency of take-out food consumption was significantly associated with a non-medical major, high preference for HFHS food, degree level, and higher BMI, but not physical activity. Conclusion: Among Chinese college students, consumption of take-out food may be affected by major category, preference for HFHS food, degree level, and BMI. This could provide guidance on restrictions of high take-out food consumption, which contributes to high obesity prevalence and high risk for metabolic diseases.

Abstract:Objective In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between university students' attitudes toward healthy nutrition with mindful eating, motivation to participate in physical activity, and academic success. Methods A total of 497 healthy students aged between 21 and 38, were randomly selected among senior students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, and non-health-related faculties, were included. In the study, a questionnaire form consisting of questions about the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants were used, along with the Attitude Scale for Healthy Nutrition (ASHN), Mindful Eating Questionnaire, and the Motivation Scale for Participation in Physical Activity. Results The total scores of ASHN and MEQ were found to be significantly higher in those studying in health-related departments and in those with high academic success. In addition, a significant inverse relationship was found between the total score of MEQ and BMI and waist circumference. A statistically significant and positive correlation was found between the total mean score of ASHN and the total mean score of MEQ and MSPPA. Conclusion It has been concluded that the development of healthy eating and lifestyle habits in university students positively affects their academic success as well as their general health.
